In a decade that saw some of the most unforgettable biopics of all time, Frank Marshall’s filmAlive often finds itself slipping through the cracks of recognition. While its competitors like Schindler’s List and Braveheart were basking in widespread acclaim and box office glory, Alive quietly earned its place as one of the most realistic and emotionally devastating portrayals of survival in cinema.
Yet, despite its quiet presence, it remains an underappreciated masterpiece, often overshadowed by its bigger biographical peers. Unlike the biopics from the same era, Alive is a slow-burning exploration of survival, focused more on the drawn-out reality than on heroic dramatics. But what it may lack in grandness, it more than makes up for in its intimate depiction of one of the most extraordinary survival stories in modern history.

Quick LinksHere's Where And When To Watch SeveranceWhat To Expect From Severance Season 2, Episode 10, "Cold Harbor""Cold Harbor" Offers One Last Chance To Catch Up With the Severed In Season 2
The time is finally upon the TV-viewing world. Severance is set to deliver its final episode of Season 2, and a lot of stakes ride on this finale. Both in terms of the storytelling at hand, but also regarding general fan satisfaction. While the show is still a great time for much of the audience, it'd be tough to deny the slower pace and lack of direct answers in the back half of Season 2 has left a few fans less-than-pleased. For most, however, it seems that Severance's sophomore outing has proven to be every bit the story viewers had waited 3 years between seasons for.

Invincible Season 3 saw an explosive finale when Conquest arrived on Earth to punish Mark and a battle ensued between them. Robert Kirkman’s series didn’t fail to impress us with this third season as well. There was one element that perfectly accompanied all the fantastic characters and jaw-dropping scenes.

As usual, the series nailed the music, using the right track for the right moment. This season featured less musical scores than the first two seasons. Nikki Glaser will return to host the Golden Globe Awards in January 2026, marking her second consecutive time leading the ceremony. The announcement confirms that the comedian, who made history as the first woman to host the event solo in 2025, has signed a multi-year deal with the awards show.
Glaser’s performance at the 82nd Golden Globes was widely praised for its mix of humor and pointed observations. During the event, she joked about the power and influence of the Hollywood elite while ensuring that her comedic approach remained engaging rather than confrontational. Her monologue touched on a variety of cultural and industry topics, including the 2024 presidential election, the #MeToo movement, and viral moments involving actors Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo.

Nikki Glaser, the Golden Globe-, Grammy- and Emmy-nominated comedian who hosted the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year, will return as the emcee of that ceremony — the highest-profile awards show that celebrates the best of both film and TV, and the first major telecast of the awards season — in January 2026, CBS and the Golden Globes announced Thursday.
On Jan. 5, at the 82nd Golden Globes Awards, Glaser became the first female solo host of a Globes telecast, and received rave reviews.
“Hosting the Golden Globes this year was without a doubt the most fun I have ever had in my career,” Glaser said in a statement. “I can’t wait to do it again, and this time in front of the team from The White Lotus, who will finally recognize my talent and cast me in season four as a Scandinavian Pilates instructor with a shadowy past.”

It’s official: Nikki Glaser will be back to host the Golden Globes next year.
The comedian will front the 83rd iteration of the TV and film awards, which will take place in January 2026 and air on CBS.
Glaser was the first woman to ever host the Globes solo and went down a treat with viewers. She scored the gig after her star turn on Netflix’s The Roast of Tom Brady, telling Deadline before the awards ceremony that the roast slot got her on “some important people’s radar”.
During January’s ceremony, she walked the line between gentle roast and tribute.
“Some of you may know me as a stand up comedian and from my appearances on roasts but I am not here to roast you tonight. I want you to know that. And how could I really? You’re all so famous, so talented, so powerful, you could really do anything.

Following two album releases in 2024, indie rocker Ty Segall shows no signs of slowing down, as he’s just announced his 16th studio album. Titled Possession, it’s out May 30th via Drag City. Along with the announcement, he’s shared the lead single, “Fantastic Tomb,” and a new string of fall tour dates.
Possession was co-written with filmmaker Matt Yoka, with whom Segall has collaborated in the past on music videos (like the 14-minute short film for 2016’s Emotional Mugger) and film scores (like Yoka’s 2020 documentary Whirlybird).

As a non-musician, Yoka brings a different perspective than the one Segall has amassed throughout his career, but the sense of trust they’ve developed over the years allows them to “throw the conceptual ball back and forth, each acting as writer and editor in the process,” as described in a press release.

Stranding a group of young people in an inhospitable wilderness isn't exactly a new concept, but Yellowjackets makes sure to set itself apart from others of its kind. Unlike Lord of the Flies or Alive, the Showtime series shows what happens when a group of teenage girls have to scrap to survive with no help of rescue. Yellowjackets follows two timelines, one in the '90s when the girls initially crashland in a charter plane and one in the present day that follows the same characters almost 30 years later.
The characters of Yellowjackets pop onscreen because they are vibrant. Although complicated, nuanced, and selfish at times, the soccer team feels like real, lived-in people—at least for the most part. The main clique of friends can always be depended on to give the series life, but some characters aren't nearly as timeless.

Firstly, a pedantic note: while that phrase makes for a nice bit of cinematic wordplay, this film really should be called ‘Fight On Flight’. Because this is a plot with a joyfully silly high-concept premise, which essentially allows for 90 minutes of brawling at 30,000 feet. The film begins, as if to emphasise this point, with a frantic montage of airborne violence: a meal trolley shoved into someone’s crotch, an Uzi disarmed by a dropkick, and a chainsaw merrily thrown into Economy class. And that’s in the first two minutes.
Then we flash back to 12 hours earlier. Some sort of shady quasi-governmental organisation is tracking a “blackhat terrorist” known only as The Ghost. He is, we’re told in mile-a-minute exposition, an über-hacker, who has crashed the Gdp of multiple countries and “destroyed Yemen’s oil reserves”. This mysterious organisation tracking The Ghost — whose true nature is only revealed late...

When Halle Berry made her big-screen debut as the crack-addicted Vivian in the most harrowing section of Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever," she put the entire world on notice that she was going to be an actor first and a movie star second. Obviously, she would quickly learn early in her career to play the Hollywood game and accept thinly-written roles that asked her to do little more than look like one of the most breathtakingly beautiful people on the planet, but she never went more than a year or two without challenging herself. This was particularly difficult to do, given the dearth of complex roles being written for Black women at the time.
Berry was 10 years into her film acting career when she landed the role that would change everything for her. As Leticia Musgrove in Marc Forster's bleak 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," she summoned up a fierce symphony of heartbreak,...

The Showtime drama Yellowjackets tells the story of a high-school women's soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness by a plane crash. The show splits its attention between two timelines, one following the teenage girls' efforts to survive directly after the crash and another set twenty-five years later which finds a handful of the survivors haunted by an unspoken trauma from their time in Canada.
A mix between a psychological thriller and a survivalist drama, the series expertly plays with the audiences' emotions. The show establishes a sharp contrast between the characters' personalities in the modern day and the 90s, creating an immediate sense of intrigue. Likewise, by using the present as a lens to reveal hints about the past, the show crafts a sense of dread and suspense that hangs around both storylines.

We all have a movie we watched way too young. Maybe it was a risqué romantic drama with superfluous nudity or a grisly horror film we barely understood. Whatever the title or how we managed to watch, exposure to the film’s adult themes at a delicate age likely led to broad misconceptions or emotional scars we carry into adulthood.
For many Millennials, that movie was Alive. Frank Marshall’s fictionalized retelling of the Miracle in the Andes introduced a generation of kids to the concept of eating human flesh and terrified us with one of the most horrific plane crash sequences ever committed to film.
In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction podcast, Jenn and Joe continue their exploration of survival cannibalism with Marshall’s inspiration yet infamous film.

Cannibalism is generally considered one of the last taboos. Along with necrophilia or incest, the consumption of human flesh is known even in the horror community as an act that goes beyond the pale, something civilized people just don’t do. But could cannibalism ever be considered a noble act? In certain survival situations, could anthropophagy be forgiven when it’s the only thing standing between you and the prolonged and painful horror of starvation?
This was the case for survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571. Stranded on a glacier high in the Andes mountains, those left alive and hoping for rescue had no choice but to eat the flesh of their fallen teammates to keep themselves from wasting away.

Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, the wife-and-husband producers who have 13 Oscar nominations and an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award between them, will be honored at the Oscar Wilde Awards next month.
The 19th annual event is scheduled for Feb. 27, three days before the Academy Awards, at the historic Ebell theater in Los Angeles. Actors John C. Reilly and Éanna Hardwicke will be saluted as well.
Also new to the lineup is Will Ferrell, who will introduce Reilly and hand him his trophy. The pair, of course, have co-starred in such films as Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006), Step Brothers (2008) and Holmes & Watson (2018).
Created by the US-Ireland Alliance, the Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate the work of those from Ireland — and some who are not — who contribute to film, television and music. (Kennedy, with eight Oscar noms, and Marshall, with five, are Californians born in Berkeley and Glendale, respectively.

Serial Killers of Women
It’s been two months of covering films and miniseries adaptations of the crimes of Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway. Jenn and I have unpacked the crimes of both serial killers, as well as their victims, the survivors, and the legacy they’ve left behind in both true crime and media.
The diverse titles have made us question the best approach for adapting the stories of extremely prolific killers in a way that doesn’t diminish their victims to mere body counts or statistics. It has also made us question if there is a “better” way to tell these stories, as many of them tend to lean into dark comedy (such as 2002’s Ted Bundy) or sensationalism (see: Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman).
And then there’s the uncomfortable realization that the main reason people know Bundy and not Gary Ridgway, aka The Green River Killer, is...

Eighty minutes?? Landman Season 1 Episode 10 was a feature-length finale, and oh boy, did it deliver.
The near future of the show has changed significantly, giving us a better picture of what to expect from the second season.
The biggest stunner here is that despite the popularity of the show and its success for the streamer, Paramount+ hasn’t renewed it yet. While “The Crumbs of Hope” could serve as a series finale, the likeliness of this happening is very slim.
(Lauren ìLoî Smith/Paramount+)
As an aside, as of this writing, there aren’t any photos for the finale, but if they arrive on Sunday, I’ll switch them out so you don’t feel like you’re reading old news.
Speaking of news, beginning the hour with Paul Harvey made me smile. Many of you won’t know who he is, but he was one of the greatest orators of our time.

Editor’s Note: This article was originally published in 2016. It’s being re-shared today in light of David Bowie’s birthday.
Digging through a friend’s record collection can be an interesting way to get to know their tastes and personality. Looking through an artist genius’ vinyl stacks, however, can be downright enlightening. As Open Culture uncovered, David Bowie rummaged through his impressive collection of 2,500 LPs back in 2003 to pick out 25 records he said “could change your reputation.”
The list of favorites ranges from spoken word (The Last Poets’ 1970 self-titled album) to classical (Gundula Janowitz’s performance of Strauss’ Four Last Songs) to good ol’ underground rock (The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground & Nico). There’s everything from lesser-known psychedelic folk (The Incredible String Band’s The 5000 Spirits of the Layers of the Onion) to theatrical cast recordings (Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris), each...

Mmm, survival cannibalism. Nothing maintains the body’s metabolism and continuity like a little filet of Bob.
Well, believe it or not, Yellowjackets wasn’t the first in the entertainment industry to cover the savagery of the human survival instinct and what people will do to continue drawing breath for one more moment.
Yellowjackets draws us into the depths of human tragedy, desperation, and the primeval substructure of the human mind when the belly draws tight and hunger strikes like a ravenous demon within.
On Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 2, the survivors continue to feel the sting of the brutal winter of 1996, and in 2022, they still suffer the consequences. (Kailey Schwerman/Showtime)
Very little in the world is as distinctly frightening and protractedly painful as raw hunger, and Yellowjackets plays on these moments. A healthy human can live an entire month without food.

Before he became the head of DC Studios, James Gunn made low-budget horror comedies for Troma Entertainment, the company behind disreputable splatterfests like "The Toxic Avenger" and "Class of Nuke 'Em High." After that, he directed "Slither," a gross-out treat about alien slugs invading a small town and turning the residents into monsters. These days, Gunn is mostly known for superhero flicks, but his horror credentials are undeniable. Unfortunately, he never got the chance to put his own stamp on two bona fide genre classics, leaving us to wonder what could have been.
There are several unrealized Gunn projects out there, but his planned remakes of "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and "It's Alive" would have allowed him to lean into the macabre sensibilities that brought him to the dance in the first place. The former is a good, old-fashioned monster movie that paints humans as the real villains. "It's Alive,...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals a major plot point from tonight’s episode of FX’s What We Do In The Shadows.
FX’s What We Do In The Shadows featured Alexander Skarsgard in tonight’s episode “Come Out and Play.” He was dressed in all black and wore vampire fangs, much like his True Blood character Eric Northman did across the HBO show’s 7 seasons.
Of his appearance, Skarsgaard shared, “I’m afraid I have no recollection of shooting this episode as Dr. Laszlo Cravensworth [Matt Barry] apparently hypnotized me at the wrap party. But I did wake up with an intense physical attraction to Dr. Cravensworth and found his extraordinary wit, charm and intelligence absolutely disarming. I have since started a YouTube fan page for him. It’s called ‘Because you’re Cravens-worth it’ Please like, follow and subscribe.”

The Society of the Snow true story is just as harrowing as the tale told in the Netflix movie. Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible), Society of the Snow tells the story of a plane carrying the Uruguay rugby team to Chili for a match in 1972, only to slam into a mountain in the Andes and crash, the plane breaking into prices. In a miracle, some of the passengers survived, but they were stranded with no one knowing where they were, and they ended up relying on desperate means for survival.
If this all sounds familiar, it is because there was already a movie released about the incident with the theatrical release Alive in 1993. However, Alive received mostly average reviews as it created more of an action-survival film. Bayona preferred to make something a little more loyal to the true story and show how the faith and determination helped these...

Showtime has been sued over Yellowjackets, with the idea theft lawsuit claiming the TV show has a similar plot to a 2015 survival movie. The horror mystery series has become one of the biggest hits for the premium network, enthralling critics and audiences with the survival of a soccer team after a plane crash in Canada, as well as how their adult lives after escaping have been impacted. Yellowjackets season 3 is currently in production, with a story planned through season 5 as of writing.
However, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed a lawsuit has been filed against Showtime and Lionsgate by Eden Film Production, who claim Yellowjackets committed idea theft against the 2015 film Eden. Both media involve a soccer team crash-landing in the wilderness, resorting to cannibalism for survival. They both also involve a coach, the child of a head coach, and someone of the opposite gender getting stuck in the wilderness with the team.

For a guy who broke out playing a lovelorn, prank-playing paper salesman, John Krasinski has done all right for himself. Ok, a lot of people still crushed on his quirky looks and clever pranks, but to be named People’s Sexiest Man Alive is on another level entirely.
Cheekily speaking on his reaction to the title, John Krasinski said, “Just immediate blackout, actually. Zero thoughts. Other than maybe I’m being punked. That’s not how I wake up, thinking, ‘Is this the day that I’ll be asked to be Sexiest Man Alive?’ And yet it was the day you guys did it. You guys have really raised the bar for me.”
One might think that a middle-aged man being named People’s Sexiest Man Alive would be an anomaly, but it’s actually pretty common for someone in at least their mid-40s to get the title. In fact,...

After years of delays and a controversial development cycle, Blizzard replaced its competitive 6v6 hero-based shooter, Overwatch, with its sequel back in 2022. Despite the switch to a 5v5 formula, the developers promised that the sequel would be a significant upgrade over the original game and bring us all new PvE content, heroes, maps, and game types to dig into.

After two years, it’s clear that Overwatch 2 has failed to live up to expectations. Blizzard’s decision to axe certain parts of the sequel hasn’t gone down well among gamers, and when you add predatory monetization tactics to the mix, things get even worse. The company ruined many great things about the first Overwatch, including the animated shorts, which were essential to the Fps experience.

Dragon Ball Daima's first two episodes were some of the most amazing moments in anime history, as they totally redefined the Dragon Ball franchise by adding several new concepts, changing what fans knew about several popular characters, and taking the Dragon Ball franchise in a unique new direction. But one of the most fascinating parts of Dragon Ball Daima was how it reintroduced the idea of hunting for the Dragon Balls, giving them the magical aura they've lacked for many years.
The Dragon Balls were introduced in the first episode of the Dragon Ball anime and the first manga chapter. Bulma explains to Goku that whoever can gather all seven Dragon Balls can summon Shenron and make a wish for whatever their heart desires. Eventually, after much bickering,...

Robert Watts, the British producer and production manager who collaborated with George Lucas on the first three Star Wars films and the first three Indiana Jones movies, has died. He was 86.
Watts died Monday in his sleep at his home in East Sussex, England, his rep, Julian Owen at Alliance Agents, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We were with him for a decade taking him to conventions all over the world, where he could connect with fans and talk about his career,” Owen said.
Watts also worked alongside Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg on the Spielberg-produced Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and An American Tail: Fievel Goes West (1991).
For the extremely challenging first Star Wars film, Watts served as production supervisor under production designer John Barry, and the two traveled to Morocco and Tunisia to scout locations. He then did some third-unit directing.
