More than 200 years after “Frankenstein” was published, Mary Shelley has never been hotter. The hulking character that the Gothic novelist conjured up — half man, half beast, all monster — will feature prominently in two upcoming movies from A-list directors that debut mere months apart.
The first, “Frankenstein,” is courtesy of Guillermo del Toro, a master of the macabre whose credits include “The Shape of Water” and “Crimson Peak.” It launches on Netflix in November and stars Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. The second, “The Bride,” will be directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is following up her acclaimed feature directing debut, “The Lost Daughter,” with a $90 million creature feature inspired by “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Warner Bros. will open this one in theaters on March 6, 2026 with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale playing the undead couple. Roger Pratt, the British cinematographer best known for his work on Tim Burton‘s Batman (1989) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), has died. He was 77.
Pratt’s death was confirmed Friday in a statement by the British Society of Cinematographers, which did not specify a date or location but said he died last month.
An Oscar nominee for The End of the Affair (1999), Pratt was born in 1947 and grew up in the U.K. midlands.
He studied at the prestigious London Film School and went on to collaborate with filmmaker Terry Gilliam across his career after the pair met on the set of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) while Pratt worked as a clapper loader. Gilliam recalled about meeting Pratt: “We were filming the Bridge of Death sequence and needed a dramatic shot looking up at the bridge with the mountains in the distance. I stuck the...

With Nosferatu a critical, audience, and box office hit, viewers can't seem to get enough of vampire movies as Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula has become a streaming hit on Tubi, hitting number six on the charts. The film stars Gary Oldman as a scenery-chewing Dracula along with Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as Van Helsing. It received positive reviews at the time of its release and did well at the global box office, earning nearly $216 million globally on a $40 million budget.
Coppola's adaptation is a gothic and atmospheric take on the original book by Stoker. But don't expect anything in the realm of Universal Studio's classic monster movies as this film was produced and released by TriStar Pictures (Sony). Oldman's initial appearance as Dracula is different, to say the least. He appears as an old man with an interesting hair-do, robe, and long nails.

American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?
It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow."
When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

The story behind the novel is almost as famous as the novel itself: in the summer of 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband Percy Shelley traveled to Lake Geneva on a trip with her stepsister Claire Claremont and Claire’s lover, poet Lord Byron. Because of the abnormally cold weather, the foursome were forced to stay indoors for nearly the entire trip, and to pass the time, Byron proposed a challenge to see who could write the scariest ghost story. Mary, a woman with a taste for the macabre, was inspired by a discussion of galvanism, a scientific theory that electricity could stimulate or create life, to write what she first thought would be a short story: the tale of a young, ambitious student playing God and creating an abomination in the process.
From that idea came quite possibly the most influential and iconic horror novel in history. Published two years later in 1818, “Frankenstein; or,...

The director of The Favourite teams up again with the fearless Hollywood star in a funny, filthy and explosively inventive spin on Frankenstein
It may only be the third week of January, but it’s hard to imagine that there will be a funnier, filthier or more extravagantly peculiar film this year than Yorgos Lanthimos’s latest picture, his second feature film collaboration with star Emma Stone. To describe Poor Things, which is adapted by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) from the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray, as creatively uninhibited hardly does justice to the wild, wild ride that this explosively inventive picture takes us on. Driven by a courageous and physically committed performance from Stone, the film follows her journey as Bella Baxter, at the start of the picture a barely verbal blank slate, who embarks on an autodidact voyage of discovery to become the ultimate self-made woman.

Warner Bros.' Bride of Frankenstein remake has added Oscar nominee Annette Bening to its cast and is expected to start filming in the first quarter of 2024. The remake will be a standalone period piece set in 1930s New York, with a focus on the chaos the Bride will cause, setting it apart from the original movie. With a long-delayed production and an all-star cast, Bride of Frankenstein could become a highly anticipated horror feature that offers a fresh new take on Mary Shelley's premise.

Back in March 2023, the news broke that filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was in the midst of casting a new film version of "Frankenstein" that he was slated to write and direct. At the time, it was said that Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth were set to star and that Andrew Garfield was to play the Monster. According to actor Doug Jones (who has worked with del Toro on several feature films), the director had long been at work on a "Frankenstein" movie that was meant to visually resemble Bernie Wrightson's "Frankenstein," a heavily illustrated printing of Mary Shelley's 1818 novel made by Marvel Comics back in 1983. At the time of Jones' comments, however, he was slated to play the Monster himself, as the actor commented on what "my look" would have been. That Wrightson-inspired version eventually evolved into the version mentioned above, which is being produced for Netflix.

The listing confirms previous reports that The Bride will star Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard as a detective.
It doesn’t include plot details, however, beyond “a horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein.” So, it remains unclear whether The Bride will be a more faithful period horror remake or a give a contemporary spin on the classic horror movie.

When a reporter in the press room asked what Stone thought about longtime friend Taylor Swift cheering so loudly for her in the audience, Stone strolled up to the mic and deadpanned, “What an a–hole, am I right?”

Jacob Elordi has been drafted in to take the role as Frankenstein’s Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s soon-to-shoot production.
Thankfully, it looks like Guillermo del Toro's planned take on the Frankenstein story has survived the chaos caused by last year’s strikes and is set to shoot next month.
However, the promising ensemble cast for the project isn’t quite intact: Andrew Garfield has vacated the role of the monster, and Deadline reports that Saltburn star Jacob Elordi to step into what could be another high-profile part.
As we’re seeing pretty frequently at the moment, rescheduling issues following months of inaction are forcing some actors to choose between projects that, pre-strike, wouldn’t have been clashing. This appears to be the case for Garfield, who’s had to exit del Toro’s Netflix project.
The promising film certainly represents another potential opportunity for Elordi to add to his growing star power.

Emma Stone knows exactly the genre Poor Things belongs in. The film from director Yorgos Lanthimos spans genres such as sci-fi, fantasy and dark comedy — and turned heads with its racy sex scenes. But Stone has declared it a rom-com, and explained why in her 2024 Golden Globes speech Sunday.
“I see this as a rom-com, in the sense that Bella falls in life itself, rather than a person. She accepts the good and the bad in equal measure — all of it is important,” said Stone of her character, Bella Baxter, a woman who is brought back to life ala the monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Guillermo del Toro is working on his own adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, and Deadline reports today that Jacob Elordi will take over the role of Frankenstein’s iconic monster for actor Andrew Garfield.
Elordi joins previously announced cast members Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Oscar Isaac, who will play Victor Frankenstein.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows brilliant scientist Victor Frankenstein, who brings his monster to life in an experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation. It feels safe to assume that del Toro will bring heightened emotions and sympathy for Frankenstein’s creation.
The acclaimed filmmaker previously said of his Frankenstein at the 10th-anniversary screening of Pacific Rim, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein.

It’s alive! Alive!
Indeed, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein film is officially a go at Netflix, with Deadline reporting that the director has signed rising star Jacob Elordi to play Frankenstein’s monster. He replaces Andrew Garfield, who had to bail on the part due to scheduling conflicts arising from the SAG/AFTRA strikes. While some may be disappointed that Garfield won’t be playing the role, Elordi’s a rising star, with him a breakout lead on Euphoria and recently earning raves for his co-starring role in Saltburn. He also plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla.
Elordi, who stands a mighty 6’5, seems a clever choice to play the sympathetic monster. Given that it’s a Guillermo del Toro movie, I expect something radically different from a straight-ahead adaptation of Mary Shelley’s work.
Universal Monsters films are classic cultural landmarks that are still considered some of the best in their genre, mixing gothic horror with campy fun. Many of the sequels and crossovers in the Universal Monsters franchise are not as strong or original as the original films, and some are considered the worst in the series. The Abbott and Costello crossovers inject comedic elements into the monster franchise, offering a fun and entertaining twist on the iconic characters.
With several monster films in development, it's a fantastic time to revisit the classic Universal Monsters films, though they drastically range in quality. From the 1930s to the 1950s, Universal Pictures developed thirty monster films, starting with Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Invisible Man. These classic movies became cultural landmarks that are still considered some of the best in their genre, mixing gothic horror with campy fun. By no means are they scary by modern standards,...
