Sydney Sweeney is adding another new movie to her growing plate!
The 27-year-old actress will be starring in and producing a new film based on a four-year-old short story on Reddit, shared by a high school English teacher, THR reports.
Keep reading to find out more…
Oscar-winning Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth is set to write the script for the movie, based on Joe Cote‘s Reddit story, titled, “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family.”
The movie “centers on a young woman who shows up at a family’s doorsteps ten years after their 18-year-old daughter went missing. Her plan is to convince the family she is their missing child, and stay just for one night — long enough to steal some valuables and get away.”
Sydney is actually the one who brought the writer on board, and Warner Bros has won the rights to distribute the film.

Sydney Sweeney is turning a chilling Reddit story into a film. I Pretended to Be a Missing Girlis in the works at Warner Bros. after the company won the rights to the package, beating out its competition. Not only is Sweeney set to star in the film, but she's also adding the project to her list of productions she will produce via her Fifty-Fifty Films. Along with her, Oscar-winning Forrest Gump American screenwriter Eric Roth is expected to write the script.
Written by Joe Cote, a high school Massachusetts English educator, "I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl So I Could Rob Her Family" is about the consequences of greed with intense twists and turns. Ten years after a family's daughter disappeared, a young woman shows up at the house of her family with the intention of pocketing valuable items. Sydney Sweeney is getting further into the thriller genre.
The actress/producer is set to lead the adaptation of a short story that first originated on Reddit, “I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl,” which was written in 2021 by high school English teacher Joe Cote. The viral short story is now getting a big screen adaptation by way of Oscar-winning “Forrest Gump,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” scribe Eric Roth, with Sweeney starring and producing, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

Here’s a cool one in the works at Warner Bros: Sydney Sweeney is attached to star in and produce I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl, via her Fifty-Fifty Films.
The movie project is based on a Reddit short story by Joe Cote. Fifty-Fifty notched Oscar-winning Forrest Gump and Dune scribe Eric Roth to adapt it.
In the short story, a drifter impersonates a missing girl to rob the girl’s family — only to realize she’s made a terrible mistake.
Vertigo’s Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe at Underground are attached to produce.
Sweeney, the White Lotus and Euphoria star, is taking a bigger hand in producing the projects she stars in. She was an executive producer on Sony’s 2023 romantic comedy hit Anyone But You ($220.3 million global box office gross and $103M net profit after ancillaries), and she shepherded the nun horror...

Four years ago, a high school English teacher posted a short story to Reddit, a tale with Gone Girl-worthy twists and turns. Now, Joe Cote is in the midst of his own real-life plot twist.
The Massachusetts-based educator’s project is in development as a feature, with Sydney Sweeney attached to star and produce, and Oscar-winning Forrest Gump scribe Eric Roth penning the script.
Warner Bros. has won the rights to the package in a competitive situation that now puts the teacher on Hollywood’s radar. He first landed representation after manager Aaron Folbe of Underground Entertainment stumbled upon the story and sought Cote out for a meeting.
Sweeney’s involvement on the project then pushed it into overdrive, with her bringing Roth aboard.

Taylor Sheridan's array of TV shows like "Yellowstone" and "Landman" and movies like the Denis Villeneuve-directed "Sicario" have made him one of the hottest creators in Hollywood, which means the wildly successful actor-writer-director-producer can afford to speak his mind on many things. As it turns out, some of his stances are so bold that they're bordering on controversial -- at least, when it comes to one particular (and particularly beloved) Tom Hanks movie.
The film in question is "Forrest Gump," the warm-hearted 1994 comedy-drama that gave Hanks his second Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar and truly cemented his status as one of America's all-time acting greats. During a 2024 appearance on "The Joe Rogan Experience" (via Dexerto), Sheridan revealed that he deeply despises the movie due to the way its portrayal of the titular character differs from his own storytelling sensibilities:

Joe Russo, one-half of the sibling powerhouse producing/directing team known as the Russo Brothers, posited that today’s blockbuster versus indie discourse is in large part to Harvey Weinstein’s Oscars campaign playbook.
In a new interview with the U.K.’s The Sunday Times, Russo lamented that popular films’ success at the box office and disproportional losses at the Academy Awards is due to a trend started by the disgraced mogul.
“This trend was started by Harvey Weinstein,” he said. “He vilified mainstream movies to champion the art films he pushed for Oscar campaigns. Popular films were winning Oscars before the mid-Nineties, then Weinstein started mudslinging campaigns … It affected how audiences view the Oscars, because they’ve not seen most of the movies. Science fiction movies built the foundation of the feature film medium at the turn of the century, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon being one of the first movies that could be considered to be a blockbuster. The best science fiction films have always been the ones that were capable of merging the pure entertainment of seeing fantastical universes and space-faring adventures with themes that reveal something about the human condition.
As one of the most important and influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert championed science fiction filmmaking that pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought to be possible in the medium, bringing new thrills and ideas to the big screen. According to him, the best science fiction movies tell stories that are both larger-than-life and relatable to a wide audience of viewers.

As a Brit, I may be a little biased when I say this: The opening ceremony for the London 2012 Summer Olympics was the best ever. Directed by Danny Boyle, the usual hour of dancers and acrobats twirling around was spectacular and silly, complete with skits celebrating the Industrial Revolution, the NHS, and the nation's rich cultural scene. Movie buffs also got two special treats: Rowan Atkinson as Mr. Bean daydreaming about beating the boys from "Chariots of Fire" in their famous beach race, and Queen Elizabeth II making her screen debut opposite Daniel Craig's James Bond before her stunt double sky-dived into the stadium. It was surely the best trailer "Skyfall," which hit theaters a few months later, could have hoped for.
The music of the Fab Four featured heavily during the ceremony, complete with Sir Paul McCartney wrapping things up by leading a sing-a-long to "Hey Jude." As such,...

These days, it's not easy to keep track of all the different streaming services you may be subscribed to. It can take hours to sift through the libraries on Netflix, Prime Video, or Hulu in search of the best movies you can watch for free. Take, for instance, Paramount+. Since it was launched in its current form in 2021, Paramount+ has been a home for original programming like "Halo" and "Knuckles," as well as content from CBS, Nickelodeon, and Showtime.
When opening up the platform's Movies section, it's overwhelming to see the spectrum of films and genres to search through. You could watch classics like "The Godfather" or "Forrest Gump," both of which are currently on Paramount+, but what about films you might not easily find on the front page? Best Actor Oscar Winners List (Photo Credit – Instagram/Wikipedia)
The Academy Awards have long vaunted acting titans, and a rare few male actors have commandeered the Best Actor statuette more than once, with Daniel Day-Lewis scaling the peak thrice. From living legends like Tom Hanks to recent winners such as Adrien Brody, 10 men are trailing Day-Lewis’ record. Here is every name with two or more wins in this hallowed category.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis
Sir Daniel Day-Lewis stands alone with three Best Actor Oscars, a feat no other man has matched. His wins were facilitated thanks to dramatic transformations for My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln—roles that exhibit him as an unforgettable chameleon. The Irish actor has retired since 2017’s Phantom Thread, but his five nominations out of fewer than a couple dozen movies certainly make us wonder whether Day-Lewis could come back for that gold once again...

Here’s Why Tom Hanks Returned His Oscar Awards To The Academy (Photo Credit – Instagram)
One of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, Tom Hanks, made a surprising move with his two Academy Awards. Years after winning them, he sent them back to the Academy. But the reason wasn’t what most people would expect.
The Forrest Gump star didn’t return them out of protest or regret. Instead, his Oscars were falling apart. The golden statues he won for Philadelphia (1994) and Forrest Gump (1995) had started to corrode due to years of handling. The Academy had a solution, but it wasn’t one Hanks had anticipated.

Earning his second Best Actor Oscar 22 years after his first, Adrien Brody entered the history books as the first leading actor to win two statuettes on his first two attempts on Sunday.
He won for his role as an ingenious, haunted architect in Brady Corbet’s epic, following his win in 2003 for Roman Polanski’s biographical World War II drama “The Pianist.”
And by wining Best Actor on Sunday, Brody not only made history but also preserved his place among Oscar milestones. Had 29-year-old Timothée Chalamet won in the category for “A Complete Unknown,” he would have become the youngest Best Actor victor ever, beating Brody’s own record from 2003.

Despite the diversity and bold genres being selected, this year’s nominations have not outrun controversies. The Apprentice’s lead actor Sebastian Stan received a nomination for Best Actor for a Leading Role, while actors like Daniel Craig did not get listed despite his solid performance in a critically acclaimed film like Queer. Another film dominating conversations is Emilia Pérez.
The Jacques Audiard-directed film has taken center stage with its record-breaking thirteen nominations.

As a director, Ben Stiller is a wily one. After skimming the surface of Gen-x disillusionment with his debut feature "Reality Bites," the son of comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara made his name helming silly-smart films whose zany exteriors belie their depth. Take his 1996 comedy "The Cable Guy." Though it initially proved to be something of a divisively dark curiosity (Roger Ebert actually listed it among his picks for the worst movies of its year), it's since undergone a reevaluation and is now regarded as being prescient in its satirization of the public's true crime obsession. Stiller's 2001 fashion industry burlesque "Zoolander" has likewise become a full-fledged cult classic, while his edgy takedown of Hollywood ego and excess, "Tropic Thunder," is just as audacious now as it was when it first arrived in 2008.
In contrast to their barbed social commentary, these films are pretty broad when it comes to their humor and characterization.

Never in recent memory has a movie bungled its Best Picture chances quite like Emilia Pérez. Some have lost their steam through the months-long awards season, but only Emilia Pérez’s slip has fallen on one person: its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, whose resurfaced tweets that were rightly deemed full of bigotry and hate came back to haunt not only her, but the film itself. Now, Netflix is finally commenting on the backlash and where the movie stands ahead of next month’s Oscars.
Appearing on The Town podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter), Netflix’s Cco Bela Bejaria said, “I think it’s really a bummer for the 100 incredibly talented people who made an amazing movie. And if you look at the nominations, and all of this awards love that it’s received, I think it’s such a bummer that it distracted from that. It really has kind of...

Taylor Sheridan has brought to life some of the most popular shows on television in the past few years. His gritty writing and unflinching look at what life throws at you out of the blue has been hailed by millions of fans worldwide.

With neo-westerns and tense thrillers, he has built an impressive repertoire for himself with his movies. Interestingly, though, in recent years, there has been a faction of the fandom that has called him out for his writing as well.
According to them, his writing has grown lazy, and just downright bland, that just follows the same formula across genres. Another complaint they have against the Yellowstone creator is how preachy his shows have become. What makes this interesting is the fact that Taylor Sheridan had noted his dislike for the same thing before.

Tom Hanks is arguably one of the most beloved actors of all time and his 1994's Forrest Gump is one of his most popular films. The movie has continued its popularity long after its premiere but replicating the formula of the six-time Oscar-winning film didn't work.
In 2024, Hanks reunited with his Forrest Gump co-star Robin Wright, and director Robert Zemeckis for Here. The new drama Here had a series of Forrest Gump connections, but, unlike their first team-up, received mixed reviews after little promotion, failing to impress both critically and commercially. Luckily, the film has experienced new success on Netflix, as Reelgood singled out Here as the ninth most popular film between the week of Jan. 30 and Feb. 5 across all streaming platforms.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is best known for tackling films with unique characters and creatures. He has received critical acclaim for his work on the 2022 stop-motion animation adaptation of the classic children’s fantasy novel Pinocchio. However, the film wasn’t the only adaptation of the beloved source material to be released that year.

Director Robert Zemeckis brought to life a different take on Pinocchio, with actor Tom Hanks playing the wooden doll’s creator, Geppetto. However, the film was panned by critics and audiences alike. In an interview, del Toro revealed the exact feature that is essential to making a good adaptation of the source material, proving why the Hanks-led version was a failure.

Bob Gale says "f*** you" to people still asking for 'Back To The Future 4'.The veteran filmmaker - who wrote and produced all three movies in the iconic time travel trilogy with collaborator Robert Zemeckis - has made it clear there are still no plans for a fourth instalment 35 years after the third movie hit the big screen.Speaking to reporters backstage at the Saturn Awards, Gale - who received the George Pal Memorial Award - said: "People always say, ‘When are you going to do ‘Back to the Future 4’ and we say, ‘F*** you.' "The franchise followed the adventures of Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Emmett 'Doc' Brown (Christopher Lloyd) as they travelled through time. The franchise is still a huge part of Gale's life, with a Broadway musical adaptation of the original 1985 classic set to tour the world, as well as plans for a stage production on Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Here, an ambitious and centuries-spanning film, reunited Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright and director Robert Zemeckis. While that certainly sounds promising given the trio's previous Academy Award-winning film, and the drama's interesting premise (more on that later), Here tanked at the box office and failed to impress critics. The movie, however, has found new life on Netflix, sitting in the streamer's U.S. Top 10 charts since its debut. Here landed in theaters on Nov. 1 before making its way to the streaming platform on January 30, where it now holds the number nine spot. It debuted at the number 2 spot, which is its streaming peak.
The drama's sudden popularity is vastly different from its theatrical run: it grossed just $15.7 million worldwide against a $50 million production budget. Critically speaking, Here also didn't garner much acclaim, as the film currently holds a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The writer, director, and stars of "Forrest Gump" regroup after 30 years for a new high-concept drama. You can imagine this premise being easily sold to salivating studio execs. And yet, Robert Zemeckis' "Here" was an abject critical and commercial dud when it debuted in November 2024. What happened? Well, according to critics, the movie is just bad. More specifically it is, according to The Times' Kevin Maher, "like watching the Sims get dementia." What does that mean? You'll have to watch the movie to find out, which you can now readily do over on Netflix.
If, out of pure curiosity, you do decide to stream Zemeckis' misfire, you won't be the only one. Netflixers are currently giving the ill-fated drama a modest reprieve over on the streamer, with "Here" working its way up the most-watched charts. The movie Here, despite reuniting the powerhouse trio of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and director Robert Zemeckis—best known for their iconic collaboration on Forrest Gump—struggled to make an impact at the box office. The film offers a unique narrative, capturing the passage of time through the lens of a single plot of land and its many inhabitants. Spanning from the distant past to the 21st century, Here explores connection, history, and the meaning of place. While audiences may have overlooked the movie during its initial release, it holds a special meaning for Robin Wright. The cultural standing of horror movies has changed over the years, though it remains one of the most controversial genres. During the 1970s, when gory slashers first burst on the scene, many saw the genre as pure schlock, or even worse, something sinister and immoral. In the 2010s, the perception of horror changed with the advent of the "elevated horror" genre and the success of A24's slate of sleek, supposedly more intellectual horror movies.
And yet, horror still isn't widely recognized as a prestigious or award-worthy genre. Horror actors rarely get nominated for big awards in these films, with Demi Moore's surprising Golden Globe win for the nauseating body horror movie "The Substance" proving an exception to that rule. That's probably why, when you think of beloved or respected Hollywood actors, horror usually isn't the first genre that comes to mind, but maybe it should be.

If you’re looking for award-contender movies to watch on streaming or on-demand video this weekend, we have some suggestions. Our list includes an Oscar-nominated top pick that recently became available for home viewing, three other new releases on streaming or VOD (one of which is an Academy Award nominee), and a recommendation of a past Oscar nominee that would make for a nice double feature with the top pick.

Paramount+ didn’t exactly shine in terms of its ad experience during my test of the streamer.
Paramount+ isn’t exactly in the bargain basement of streaming any longer. At $8 per month for ad-supported streaming, it’s firmly in the neighborhood of larger streamers like Netflix and Disney+ as far as monthly price goes. It already seems like a long time since you could get an ad-supported Paramount+ account for closer to $5 monthly.
The price of Paramount+ has gone up, but how is the ad experience for those trying to save money by streaming with commercials? I signed up for an ad-supported Paramount+ account to try it out and I was not all that thrilled with my experience.

The polarizing albeit somehow industry favorite "Emilia Pérez" has nabbed 13 Oscar nominations, setting the record for most nominations by an international film. The Spanish-language French musical crime film, written and directed by Jacques Audiard, is also tied with "Gone With the Wind," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Forrest Gump," and "Oppenheimer" for the second-most Oscars nominations, ever. /Film's Jeremy Mathai called the film "a swing and a miss," and with a 32% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, he's certainly not alone in thinking the movie was a huge whiff.

The Academy Awards have an unfair reputation among the public for being out of touch with the public's interest in movies. When you look back at its nearly 100-year history, most of its winners for Best Picture were solid financial hits that connected with a mainstream audience. In some cases, like Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, Titanic, and recently Oppenheimer, Best Picture winners were already cultural sensations before earning the coveted award. If anything, Academy voters are perhaps too keen on the zeitgeist, as many of their winners in the last 30 years have aged as poorly as expired milk. Between Dances With Wolves and American Beauty, many Best Picture winners of the 1990s were profound at the moment but have quickly fallen out of fashion. With Forrest Gump, the crime is not just that this maudlin and simplistic 1994 drama won Best Picture, but it also defeated one of the...

For a race that seemed as unpredictable as any in recent history, the 2025 Oscar nominations came and went without many huge surprises. All the expected acting contenders — including frontrunners like Demi Moore, Adrien Brody, Timothée Chalamet, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin — were bestowed with nominations on Thursday, as were several films long predicted to score Best Picture recognition. But while the 97th Oscars were perhaps shorter than usual on snubs and surprises, the list of nominees did clarify which films Academy voters truly loved and what might ultimately win Best Picture in March. Ahead are the key takeaways from the 2025 Oscar nominations.
Emilia Pérez is the front-runner to beat
With 13 Oscar nominations on Thursday, including Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Director, and acting nominations for Karla Sofia Gascón and Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez is not just the year’s top Oscar contender but one of the most decorated nominees in history.

As we wrap an epic day of coverage of the Oscar nominations, here are some final observations:
—It’s ironic that there will be no Best Song performances at this year’s 97th Academy Awards, because music-driven movies have rarely, if ever, made such an impact. This is the first time that three music-oriented/musical films have been nominated for Best Picture in the same year: Emilia Pérez (with its chart-topping 13 nominations), Wicked (with its 10), and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown (with eight). The last times that even two musicals faced off for Oscar’s biggest prize was in 1964 with My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins and in 1968 with winner Oliver! and Funny Girl.

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards were announced today.
And as usual, the list contained some major surprises.
Some big names were snubbed, while other major talents received their very first nominations.
But the biggest shocker of all might have been the absolute dominance of Emilia Perez.

The French-produced Netflix film scored a whopping 13 nominations, making it tied for the second-most nods of all time.
(It’s a several-way tie that includes such cinematic heavy-hitters as Gone With the Wind, Forrest Gump, and Oppenheimer.)
The film also received more noms than any other 2024 film by a considerable margin.

That tally — encompassing noms for best picture, director, actress, supporting actress, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, sound and two for original song — smashed the record for a non-English-language film (previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which had 10 each) and is just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Is Jacques Audiard’s Netflix film unbeatable? Of course not. Plenty of people have issues with the film, including many members of the Mexican and trans communities, who find it offensive, and critics and general audiences,...

A drama about the United States' involvement in Afghanistan directed by Mike Nichols (winner for "The Graduate") and starring Tom Hanks (winner for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump"), Julia Roberts (winner for...

Even some of Hollywood’s biggest stars have some regrets about roles that they turned down over the years.
Stars have to make a tough choice every time a job offer comes in. They need to field a list of potential projects and decide which one seems the most promising and interesting to them. In the process, they might end up missing out on a chance to star in a project that becomes a serious blockbuster.
We previously rounded up 12 actors who nearly passed on what would become their most iconic roles. However, there are even more actors who did say “no thanks” to appearing in solid-gold hits.
For instance, someone turned down a role and wound up losing a $250 million payday! A pop icon had some regrets about passing on a chance to play Catwoman. One actress was even offered a chance to play Neo, a male role, in The Matrix!
