Peter Dinklage is co-stars with the legendary, Shirley MacLaine in American Dreamer, a dark comedy from Plaion Pictures which will be available for digital download on March 17th. Will this St. Patrick’s Day be a lucky one for film lovers lovers worldwide? Let’s explore. I was first introduced to the on screen work of Peter Dinklage in 2003 when a friend in Los Angeles who was trying to break into the business, invited me to see what he called a groundbreaking feat of acting in the indie film, The Station Agent. I was deeply affected by this drama that found Dinklage playing a reclusive, antisocial man who ends up living in an abandoned train depot, who comes in and out of his shell thanks to unexpected relationships with his neighbors turned friends. Peter Dinklage’s Unmatched Screen Presence In the two decades since, I’ve seen Dinklage pop up...

Wow, Shirley MacLaine is spilling the beans about some of her famous leading men, and she’s sure as hell not holding anything back. In her latest revelation, the iconic actress tells us all about the good, the bad and the ugly of Hollywood’s leading men at the height of her fame – and guess what? She had an affair with most of them.
Shirley MacLaine Opens Up About Her Long and Successful Acting Career
Shirley MacLaine is one of the last greats still alive that acted all the way from black and white to color television, and through the years, she’s remained as open as an open book.
She’s fashionable, she’s iconic, and she’s, best of all, a nontraditional woman at a time when the word “woke” hasn’t even started stirring from slumber.
While celebrity memoirs are now becoming a trend rather than a...

It was July 1994. The summer was sizzling. And so were cinemas. That’s truly no lie.
James Cameron’s action comedy flick “True Lies” opened in theaters on the 15th of the month, knocking “Forrest Gump” from the top of the box office chart in its second week. “True Lies” starred a pre-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a U.S. government spy whose occupation is unbeknownst to his own family. (They think that he’s a salesman.) Schwarzenegger was one of the biggest movie stars on the planet at the time, thanks to a string of recent successes including 1988’s “Twins,” 1990’s “Total Recall” and 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” While “True Lies” was judged favorably by most critics, it was the bodybuilder-turned-actor’s onscreen wife Jamie Lee Curtis who received the bulk of the praise. Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.
Series-wise, a highlight of 1999 goes beyond the well-established canon with films like Trick and Bye Bye Africa, while of course including Sofia Coppola, Michael Mann, Scorsese, and Claire Denis. Who would have thought that one of the more enduring family movies in the last 20 years would come from Brett Ratner and star Nicolas Cage? Indeed, The Family Man was only a modest success when it came out over the holiday season in 2000, but it has since inspired rip-offs and remakes and is a beloved classic for many of us.
In it, Nicolas Cage plays a high-flying businessman named Jack Campbell, who doesn’t appreciate the little things in life, such as Christmas. It’s lonely at the top, but he consoles himself with his Ferrari, penthouse apartment in New York, and hook-ups with women such as supermodel Amber Valletta, who has a small role as his bedmate early in the film. Yet, being alone on Christmas Eve, he does a good deed when he intervenes in a convenience store standoff by showing empathy towards a wired, gun-toting customer, played by Don Cheadle,...

In “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” Nicolas Cage stars as himself. Or at least, a version of himself.
The film finds Cage at a rough spot in his acting career, where he can’t seem to book any big roles. It is after Cage has lunch with a potential boss — and forcefully tries to give the guy a sample read of a script — that his publicist (played by Neil Patrick Harris) offers Cage a gig to appear at a superfan’s birthday party.
When he meets Javi (Pedro Pascal), Cage expects to get in, say his piece and get out, but Javi reveals that he wrote a screenplay in which he wants Cage to star, and the two become fast friends, awkwardly bonding over Cage’s past performances, many of which are alluded to in some way. Two CIA agents (Tiffany Haddish and Ike Barinholtz) enter the mix and twist the plot,...

When IndieWire first launched at Sundance in 1996, it probably didn’t seem like an industry newsletter strictly focused on non-studio films would have much reason to write about Nicolas Cage. Yes, the eccentric “Wild at Heart” star was just a few weeks away from winning an Oscar for his performance in “Leaving Las Vegas,” but his roles had otherwise been trending away from the experimentation that defined the early portion of his career, and towards more conventional multiplex fare like “Guarding Tess” and “It Could Happen to You.” By that point, anyone reading the Hollywood trades already knew that Cage’s next movie would be “The Rock” — if a time-traveler told them that Cage was going to wear John Travolta’s face in a John Woo pistol opera the following summer, odds are they’d say “yeah, that makes sense.”

As unhinged as its muse, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a curious bit of fan service and perhaps a welcome evolution in the career of Nicolas Cage, who has been one of the more active leading men of late—an output that in some years stretches to six feature titles, some of which he’s served as a producer for. This film posits the theory that our man is broke, down on his luck, and in need of a comeback. Guided (or haunted) by Nicky––the clean-shaven younger version of himself that serves as the beast within––he finds himself seeking one massive hit to survive. He’s in troubled waters, divorcing wife Sally (Sharon Horgan), unable to relate to daughter Addy (Lily Sheen), and deep in debt from a lavish lifestyle. After a potential dream project that he pitches in grand Cagian fashion passes, his agent Richard...

Nicolas Cage’s sometimes over-the-top performances, complete with meme-worthy lifted brows and bulging eyeballs, are getting their own showcase. “People think I’m not in on the joke,” the headline of his 2013 Guardian profile reads. Lest there be any doubt, he’s now acted in and produced a feature-length film to prove his point.
Channeling the meta-ness of “Adaptation,” Cage stars in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” as a debt-ridden, washed-up actor named Nick Cage and as Nicky, his alter ego and a bad angel of sorts who appears to be 1980s-vintage Cage, here to facilitate internal dialogue. Per the film’s concocted biographical details, he has an ex-wife named Olivia (Sharon Horgan), a makeup artist he met on the set of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” and a teenage daughter named Addy (Lily Mo Sheen), who thinks Humphrey Bogart was an adult film performer.

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

Peter Larkin, whose innovative set design graced Broadway productions and major films, died Monday at his home in Bridgehampton, New York after a brief illness. He was 93 years old and his death was confirmed by his stepson, screenwriter Wesley Strick.
Larkin won four Tony Awards and was behind the set design for such Broadway productions as Peter Pan, The Teahouse of the August Moon and No Time for Sergeants. His film resume was equally impressive, including Tootsie and Get Shorty.
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Boston by Pulitzer Prize winning historian Oliver Waterman Larkin, he attended Yale.
Larkin’s Broadway debut came with Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck in 1951. That led to his big break, the Broadway show of Peter Pan with actress Mary Martin. The show was so successful it immediately went to television within five months, setting a television record for the time with 65 million viewers.

When Police Academy arrived in 1984, it was a phenomenon. And it went onto spawn a huge comedy franchise. Sadly, the man behind making the original a true classic has passed away. Director Hugh Wilson died from unknown causes. He was 74 years old at the time of his death.
Not only is Hugh Wilson responsible for dropping Police Academy on the world, he also created the classic sitcom Wkrp in Cincinnati, which debuted in 1978. And he helmed the popular comedy movie The First Wives Club. The filmmaker and TV producer died this past weekend in Albemarle County.
Hugh Wilson got his comedy start writing for TV in the 1970s. He first worked on The Bob Newhart Show and the Tony Randall Show before creating Wkrp in Cincinnati. Well before he starred in a series of low-rent Dtv thrillers and memes, Nicolas Cage, now smugly considered an icon of unintentional comedy by so many, used to make mainstream studio comedies pretty regularly. The early ’90s in particular saw a spate of innocuous Cage yukfests (Honeymoon In Vegas, Guarding Tess, Trapped In Paradise), and Army Of One is arguably his first broad comedy since those days, considering the darkness and anguish that run through the likes of Adaptation or The Weather Man. Even this return to outright wackiness finds Cage pretty far afield from his ’90s rom-coms, as he plays real-life crackpot Gary Faulkner, a Colorado man who in the years following 9/11 set off for Pakistan intending to accomplish what the U.S. government couldn’t: capture Osama Bin Laden.

Nicolas Cage has a formidable reputation, which is unsurprising given that he has been performing onscreen since 1981, but that was long before the internet got hold of him and his work. Now, in the fourth decade of a distinguished career, the Academy Award winner and his back catalogue are the inspiration for a range of ‘memes’ based on everything from his hair, to his tendency to deliver performances that seem to be somewhat off-the-wall.
He may not have enjoyed much box office success in recent years, but Nicolas Cage has a very devoted fan base that have a particular appreciation for projects and scenes in which he has a chance to go ‘Full Cage.’ This usually involves making some scary faces – often with wide eyes and a ghoulish grin – shouting very loudly, and gesticulating wildly. There may be screaming involved, and another person is very often the focus of his menace.

The 1990s: a time when Sleepwalkers, Burt Reynolds, No Escape, Chevy Chase and F/X/2 could top the Us box office...
By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.
In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.

Happy 80th birthday, Shirley MacLaine!
The legendary, award-winning actress, who was born April 24, 1934 in Richmond, Va, started out as a dancer and got her big break on Broadway. She made her first film with Alfred Hitchcock, became a Rat Pack regular, flirted briefly with politics but has never stopped acting as she enters her 7th decade in Hollywood.
She started off as a lovably kooky ingenue, but is known today for her cantankerous matriarch roles in "Downton Abbey," "Bernie," "Steel Magnolias," "Guarding Tess," and, of course, her Oscar-winning role as Aurora Greenway in "Terms of Endearment."
Her next gig is a singing and dancing role on "Glee," of course. Happy Birthday to one of the most talented, most colorful character actresses of all time.
1. She was named after Shirley Temple.
2. She's been performing since age 3, when she began doing ballet.

Lately, Rebhorn had been seen most prominently on the small screen as Claire Danes' father on the Showtime drama series "Homeland," not to mention a recurring role on the USA series "White Collar." But Rebhorn also appeared on the big screen, and was easily one of the better known "Hey, it's that guy!" actors. Rebhorn has appeared in over 100 projects, including various episodes of television and feature films. The actor's more prominent roles on the big screen included Desperate Hours, Regarding Henry, Basic Instinct, Lorenzo's Oil, The Scent of a Woman, Guarding Tess, Independence Day, The Game, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Meet the Parents,...

While modern audiences will remember Richard Griffiths as Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter franchise, the 65 year-old actor was also one the most highly respected stage actors of his generation. He passed away on March 28th following complications from heart surgery.
While stage work was where he learned his craft, he made the successful transition in the early 1970s into television. In the early 80’s he began a string of supporting roles in films like Gorky Park, but it was his role in the 1987 cult film Withnail and I, where he played lecherous Uncle Monty that, that would bring him more recognition to a wider audience. He parlayed that into other supporting roles in Hollywood like King Ralph, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, Guarding Tess and Sleepy Hollow.

Richard Griffiths, who starred as Harry Potter's foster father Vernon Dunsley, passed away at the age of 65 yesterday. The actor passed due to complications that arose after heart surgery, his agent confirmed earlier today. Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe released a brief statement regarding his time spent with Richard Griffiths.
"Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career ... any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him."
The actor was born in Thornaby-on-Tees in Yorkshire, England in 1947, the son of a steelworker. He learned sign language at a very early age, because both of his parents were deaf. He studied drama in Manchester and went on to star in several radio and theater productions. He won a Tony and several other awards for the role of...

Beloved British actor Richard Griffiths, perhaps best known to American audiences as Uncle Dursley in the "Harry Potter" films, has passed away at the age of 65 due to complications following heart surgery. A star of stage and screen, he will be greatly missed, but leaves behind a hugely impressive body of work that will be studied and enjoyed for generations. While the "Harry Potter" role might be his most famous (especially internationally), Griffith's list of credits is staggering, appearing in every conceivable genre and in every type of role. He had roles in "Superman II," "Ragtime," "Chariots of Fire," "Gandhi," "Gorky Park," "Guarding Tess," "Sleepy Hollow," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Venus," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (playing King George II, powdered wig and all), and "Hugo." Besides "Harry Potter," his most beloved role might be that of another uncle -- Uncle Monty in cult British comedy "Withnail and I.

From attempted assassinations, to an overrun White House, it’s safe to say that cinematic Presidents don’t exactly have it easy, especially when their lives are quite literally in the hands of their friend-or-foe secret service agents. In Olympus Has Fallen Gerard Butler plays Mike Banning, a disgraced former Presidential guard trapped in the White House when it falls under terrorist attack. It is then up to him to retake Olympus (secret service lingo for the White House), and save the President from his captors. With all the action and saving of a distressed President, Butler’s Mike Banning easily joins our list of actors who have stepped into the line of fire to valiantly protect the President. On a scale of success rates from Nicholas Cage in Guarding Tess to Dennis Quaid in Vantage Point, we’d say Olympus Has Fallen belongs somewhere near the top. Some secret...

It’s not just a single life that gets toted up when Shirley MacLaine receives a career award. It’s all her lives — past, present, and future.
MacLaine earned the American Film Institute’s life-achievement award Thursday night with friends and colleagues praising her accomplishments in this life — and cracking jokes about the reincarnation believer’s other lives.

Two years ago, there was some frothy chatter about a comedy action script called El Presidente that Tom Cruise was considering, with Jack Nicholson sounded out as a possible co-star. Warner Bros. denied that anyone was seriously involved and not much has been heard since. But now the rumour has once more broken the surface of the development seas, with Cruise’s name once more mentioned, Robert Downey Jr a mooted co-star and Jay Roach in talks to direct. The story, written by former Daily Show producer and current Parks And Recreation staff member Dan Goor, follows a gung-ho, by-the-book Secret Service agent assigned to guard a bumbling, sleazy former president. Though he’s resigned to a life of fixing small messes and dealing with his annoying new boss, the agent gets a taste of real problems when a threat is made on the man’s life. So a bit Guarding Tess then?...

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. About two years ago, reports went around that Warner Bros. were hoping to re-team "A Few Good Men" duo Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson for "El Presidente." It was denied a couple days later, with reps saying that Cruise wasn't officially attached, but clearly the studio were interested...and they still are, as the project is now surfacing again.
Vulture has the latest word that the studio is now toying with the idea of pairing up Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for the flick, that has "comedy no-brainer" written all over it. Penned by Dan Goor ("Last Call With Carson Daly," "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," "Parks & Recreation") the story follows a Secret Service agent who is assigned to cover the worst former President, and the two are forced to go on the run when the ex-president's life is put in danger.

Richard Linklater‘s latest film, Bernie, features Jack Black as a mustachioed mortician who all the townsfolk admire. His character is a people person, which is probably why he tries to make nice with the snarly widow played by Shirley MacLaine. A romance blossoms, but there’s still plenty of dirt in the woman’s heart, and from the looks of the new trailer, she doesn’t get to see the end credits. And apparently Matthew McConaughey plays a lawyer convinced dear old Bernie is a killer. Jack Black ratcheting it down a notch? Maybe without even scatting? MacLaine essentially reprising her Guarding Tess role? McConaughey with a shirt on? Looks great: The generic, buzz-worded voice over does not at all match the tone of the movie, but that’s the marketing game. The “True Story” angle here is interesting because they’re being bold about it even though it’s pretty obviously fictional. Still...

HollywoodNews.com: In kinda shocking news, the patently mediocre Gnomeo and Juliet is still benefiting from the utter lack of real kid-flick competition for one more weekend and actually reached number one in its third weekend. Dropping just 26% in weekend three, the third-rate toon has still grossed $75 million and has a shot at $100 million. I’m sure Disney is just as flabbergasted by the stunning success of this one as I am. This was basically considered a dump until just a month or so ago. Expect much personal embarrassment if the more costly and high-profile Mars Needs Moms fails to outgross this ‘offbrand’ cartoon after it opens on March 11th. We need Rango now more than ever…
Personal anecdote: I actually took my three-year old to this during the week during a day off from preschool. She has been going to the movies with me periodically since...

Could you handle a reunion between Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson on the big screen? Okay, now that the obligatory reference to the iconic line from 'A Few Good Men' is over with, here's the truth: the two actors will potentially co-star in Warner Bros.'s action comedy 'El Presidente,' about a former commander-in-chief and his Secret Service agent on the run from some sort of threat. Nicholson has so far been offered the role of the "bumbling and degenerate" ex-president, while Cruise is attached to the part of his idealistic protector, according to 24 Frames.
Nothing else is revealed about the film (why the Spanish title?) except that it was written by TV scribe Dan Goor, who has worked for Conan O'Brien, Carson Daly, 'The Daily Show' and currently 'Parks and Recreation.' But it does evoke a lot of memories of other films,...

The combination of two iconic personalities in one film is enough for most audiences time and money; at least that's what Warner Bros. hopes to be true for their upcoming film El Presidente. The La Times [1] reports that Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise may team up for the film, described as an "action-comedy about a dedicated Secret Service agent assigned to protect a bumbling and degenerate ex-president." Nicholson has been made an offer for the role of the president who receives a threat on his life, while Cruise would play the overly-committed secret service agent who must go on the run with the former Commander-in-Chief. Of course, the two actors memorably squared off in A Few Good Men, creating iconic courtroom drama and countless parodies in the process. There's no word on who would direct, but we do know the script comes courtesy of late-night writer Dan Goor. Is it...

When I interviewed Bill Nighy last year, three things seemed to stand out about the man. One, he shakes hands with only the front part of three fingers like I have to imagine witches do. Two, he had a greater sense of humor about himself than anyone else I've ever met. Three, he was insanely, effortlessly cool. He continues to exude both coolness and the self-effacing grace that makes him such a charismatic personality (aside from the willingness to star in serious work and movies about werewolves fighting vampires) by claiming that he can't stand the experience of watching movies that he's in. He, like most actors who have thrown out that claim in the past, seems completely put off by seeing himself on screen. Hardly an original claim, but one that rings true for anyone who has ever seen a bad photo of themselves (be they regional theater actors or international film stars). So I decided...

I'm not impressed with a lot of Nic Cage's movies of late. It's so frustrating when you know he could have done better movies. The Nic Cage of today seems like a totally different actor from the Nic cage of yesteryears. I first saw him in Birdy, as Sergeant Al Columbato, an injured Vietnam vet who has a peculiar friend - Birdy, played by Matthew Modine. I love his performances in Guarding Tess, Moonstruck, Matchstick Men and Leaving Las Vegas.

Perhaps his collaboration with Werner Herzog's in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans would mark the return of the real Nic Cage.
Remarked Michael Bialas @the HuffPost: Cage has made quite a career for himself in playing erratic characters (Matchstick Men, Vampire's Kiss) living on the edge. While his notorious movie meltdown scenes are legendary, he may even "over-the-top" himself in Bad Lieutenant.

Laura Dern, Recount -- "The acting part of it was just delicious. Inappropriately fun. You couldn't believe you were having so much fun. But the research part I found terribly painful. Every day you felt like your mouth was wide open, just agape at all that was gotten away with." Laura Dern is describing playing Florida secretary of state Katherine Harris in the HBO TV movie Recount to New York magazine.
