Fans of the cult musician/composer (and former child actor--see "The Swan" with Grace Kelly) Van Dyke Parks will take special pleasure in his whimsical score; Van Dyke even acts in this one. Director Jeff Stein ("The Kids Are Alright") has his 80s MTV video skills down (fans of the fish-eye lens will have a ball), but the story meanders to a pleasant conclusion, and if it's not your cup of tea, you can at least enjoy "spot the cameo" (look! It's Dweezil Zappa!).
The music is infectious and sticks in the brain and the costumes and sets are adorably quirky.
I recommend this movie highly, whether you're 4 or 104+ or anywhere in between

Jack: I need to stop falling down this hill and breaking my crown. This is the thirtieth something time I've done this!
Jill: Oh yeah? Well I am constantly the one who if forced to tumble down the hill following after you! Why can't it be Jill's turn to break her crown, and you come tumbling after for a change, huh?
