The Mulholland Drive star had lunch with the director weeks before he died, and says: ‘He was not, in any way, done’
Mulholland Drive star Naomi Watts says that David Lynch “wanted to go back to work” before his death in January.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Watts revealed that she had spent an afternoon with Lynch in November, along with Laura Dern, who acted in Lynch’s Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. “We had a beautiful lunch at his house. I knew he’d been unwell but he was in great spirits. He wanted to go back to work – Laura and I were like, ‘You can do it! You could work from the trailer.’ He was not, in any way, done. I could see the creative spirit alive in him.”...

2025 has been a tough year already for deaths in cinema. Most recently we lost the likes of Gene Hackman and Michelle Trachtenberg, covering a wide fanbase. But one that still stings is that of David Lynch, who died on January 15th. And while this year’s In Memoriam segment of the Oscars did include Lynch, he also got another wonderful nod courtesy of Isabella Rossellini, who wore blue velvet in honor of the late director.
Isabella Rossellini — who was earned her first ever Oscar nomination for Conclave — paid tribute to David Lynch in a subtle but not unnoticeable way, turning up at the Dolby Theatre in a Dolce & Gabbana dress made of blue velvet, a lovely nod to the film of the same name that she starred in for Lynch. (Rossellini absolutely deserved an Oscar nomination for that performance but that’s nothing to get hung up on now...

Nicolas Cage is continuing to expand his wild filmography by dipping his toes into the western genre. But, it wouldn't be a Nic Cage movie without the actor either delivering one of the most groundbreaking, emotional performances of his life, or one of the most bonkers caricatures you've ever seen. For his new, wild western, Gunslingers, Cage has characteristically chosen the latter.
The first trailer for Gunslingers has now been unleashed, and it's safe to say that Cage is a certified scene-stealer once again. The film is written and directed by Brian Skiba (Guns of Redemption) and is set to be released on April 11. Alongside Cage, Gunslingers also stars Heather Graham, Stephen Dorff, and Scarlet Rose Stallone. Cage plays mad genius Ben, who is guided to a town named Redemption to confront their violent histories. The official synopsis reads:

“This whole world’s wild at heart and weird on top.”
Can true love really conquer all? When two people become lost in each other’s eyes, can they actually transcend the rest of the world? David Lynch puts this theory to the test in his 1990 film Wild at Heart by surrounding a swoon worthy couple with the elements of hell. Despite being mired in a dangerous world of murderous mothers, hired assassins, and petty criminals holding a grudge, these two wild lovebirds manage to hold onto each other and defend their connection against all odds.
Lula (Laura Dern) and Sailor (Nicolas Cage) are meant to be. Though separated for the last 22 months, they reunite in a stylish convertible and set out to explore the sun-bleached back roads of middle America. But the dreamy young couple encounters nothing but obstacles along the way.

When David Lynch passed away last month, a stream of tributes from those he worked closely with came in. We can now add Wild at Heart star Nicolas Cage to the list, who says that David Lynch was unlike any other director he has ever worked with.
Speaking with Empire for their April 2025 issue as which contains tribute to the director, Nicolas Cage said, “I never had more fun working with anybody than I did with David Lynch. And I think Wild At Heart is one of the best movies I’ve ever made. I’ll never be able to do another movie like that. [Lynch] cannot be replaced.” Lynch and Cage seem like a match made in heaven (where everything is fine) but they sadly only ever worked together on Wild at Heart — although it’s just the sort of film you’d expect them to collaborate on. Nicolas Cage is an enigma of a performer and has been for quite a few generations now. Next to Willem Dafoe, Danny Trejo, and Hollywood extra legend Eric Roberts, he is one of the most employed men in the business. The result of being extremely employed and constantly working is a filmography that can only be described as a mixed bag. Cage has appeared in some of the most critically panned films of all time, from 2014's Left Behind to 2006's meme-worthy The Wicker Man, all the way to the much-maligned but surprisingly fun Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Critics have had the upper hand for much of his late career, but there was a time when a Nicolas Cage film meant a surefire opportunity for awards season gold.

On January 15, 2025, the world learned that the groundbreaking and iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch passed away at the age of 78 — and despite Lynch's public struggles with his health in recent years, it was still shocking that a man whose last name literally became an adjective for "weird, bonkers stuff in film and TV" had left this world. Unsurprisingly, the entertainment industry and the entire world banded together to mourn the loss and celebrate Lynch's incredible body of work ... and in a recent panel, ScreenRant heard director Denis Villeneuve weigh in on Lynch's passing at the Saturn Awards.
"Cinema is probably the closest artform, closest to dreams, awakened dreams," Villeneuve began. "And David Lynch was definitely the master, the one who brought us closest to this dream state." He expressed his sincere wish of wanting to have had the chance to meet him, but production on the "Dune" movies kept the meet-up from happening.

In 2020, Laura Dern celebrated with her very first Oscar win for “Marriage Story”! It was a fitting gift to the veteran actress, who has starred in dozens of quality films throughout her lengthy career. Let’s take a look back at her career by ranking her 16 greatest film performances.
Dern began her career as a teenager close to four decades ago. She seemed to initially aspire to a more normal life but her attempts to finish her college degree at the University of Southern California were continually interrupted by obtaining plum film roles. That she’d eventually settle into an acting career isn’t surprising since her father Bruce Dern is a two time Oscar nominee and her mother Diane Ladd a three time contender
Dern would go on to earn two Oscar nominations of her own for “Rambling Rose” (1991) and “Wild” (2014), plus work steadily in both film and television...

The entertainment industry suffered an enormous loss on January 15 following the tragic passing of famed director, David Lynch. The filmmaker, known for projects like Twin Peaks and The Elephant Man, worked with several top stars of the industry, but there was one star that slipped through his fingers. There was arguably no bigger pop culture phenomenon in the '80s and '90s than Madonna, and despite several efforts to do so, the late Lynch never got the opportunity for the singer turned actress to star in one of his creations.
Throughout that time, Madonna starred in iconic films such as A League Of Their Own, cementing herself as a singer with at least some semblance of acting prowess (for the most part). However, for whatever reason, it was not meant to be, and regardless of any plans Lynch may have had, it never went beyond the planning phase.

Throughout his career, David Lynch often crossed paths with Barry Gifford. It was from Gifford’s novel of the same name that Lynch adapted Wild At Heart. Later, they collaborated on two episodes of Lynch’s HBO anthology Hotel Room; then they co-wrote Lost Highway together. But not all of Gifford and Lynch’s work together made it into production. In the new issue of Empire, our feature celebrating the late, great Lynch includes a tribute from Gifford, looking back on his time working with the legendary filmmaker – in which he opens up on a film project they were cooking up for Madonna.

David Lynch will go down as one of the most uncompromising artists in cinema history. And when you combine that boundless originality with the freewheeling performance style of Nicolas Cage, another artist who’s not one to curb his impulses, you get something as unique as 1990’s Wild At Heart. Equal parts romantic and nightmarish, it’s a road trip movie like no other. In Empire’s issue paying tribute to David Lynch in the wake of his passing, Cage looks back on his experience working with the great director, a journey in its own right.
As he tells Empire, Cage found real freedom in collaborating with Lynch on Wild At Heart. “I never had more fun working with anybody than I did with David Lynch,” he explains. “And I think Wild At Heart is one of the best movies I’ve ever made. I’ll never be able to do another movie like that.

On 15 January, the cinematic world shifted off its axis. At the age of 78, David Lynch passed away – a true pioneer, a complete one-off, whose big-screen (and small-screen) masterpieces never failed to transport us somewhere else; often directly into Lynch’s own singular brain. His work was surreal, uncompromising, challenging, engrossing, and always, always visionary, translating dreamlike ideas into pure celluloid. When news of his passing arrived, Team Empire wanted to do something special to celebrate his life and legacy – not only delivering the ultimate tribute to Lynch inside the new issue of Empire magazine, but putting him on the subscriber cover of our April 2025 issue.
The cover, illustrated exclusively for Empire by Edward Tuckwell, pictures Lynch in Twin Peaks’ iconic Red Room, walking on that black-and-white zigzag floor towards those mysterious crimson curtains. That Lynch has left us is hard to comprehend; that he leaves behind such an astonishing body of work is a joy.

Denis Villeneuve, the sci-fi visionary behind films like Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and, of course, the modern adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune, has paid tribute to David Lynch, his filmmaking colleague and partner in the rocky territory of Dune adaptations.
Lynch, who passed away recently, is credited with the first-ever adaptation of the literary sci-fi classic from 1965. In 1984, the surrealist master brought Duneto the big screen with mixed results. Starring Sting, Kyle MacLachlan, Brad Dourif, Max von Sydow, and Virginia Madsen, among others, the film was a box-office flop. Lynch was famously not happy with the studio's interference and spent decades distancing himself from the film. A few alternate cuts emerged over the years, but none of them matched Lynch's vision enough to make him stand behind the film.

It hurts to acknowledge the world has lost David Lynch. An unabashed auteur, Lynch was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. He challenged the confines of cinema as a medium and embraced surrealism over escapist entertainment. To this very day, fans continue to develop new theories surrounding his undeniably idiosyncratic work. After all, bold genre experiments like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive are open to countless interpretations. Furthermore, Lynch'sTwin Peaks pushed the bounds of television into exciting, uncharted territory and left a seismic impact on pop culture as a whole. His dreamlike style is unmistakable, yet few acknowledge one of the director's most provocative projects.

During his lifetime, David Lynch was nominated twice for the Writers Guild of America Awards but never won. Weeks before his death, however, he was able to accept a recognition that will be officially bestowed in February.
During its 2025 awards ceremony, the Writers Guild of America West will posthumously present the Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet writer-director with a lifetime achievement prize, the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, the union stated Wednesday. David Lynch, one of cinema's all-time great auteurs, passed away in January 2025 at the age of 78. Lynch began his movie career at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where, while studying painting, he made several short films. In 1970, Lynch transferred from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to the newly founded AFI Conservatory, where he started studying filmmaking. With the help of the American Film Institute, Lynch made his debut feature film, Eraserhead, in 1977.
Through the ten feature films he directed, Lynch established a body of work that combined surrealist, horror, and neo-noir aesthetics to examine the darkness that exists under the facade of the American Dream. Movies such as Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire best represent what has become known as the Lynchian aesthetic. In the wake of the recent passing of beloved director/part-time weatherman David Lynch, it's worth remembering that one of his best talents was his acting. He always nailed it in his live-action performances, be it as Gordon Cole in "Twin Peaks" or as John Ford in "The Fabelmans," but he brought his A-game to voice acting, too. Case in point: The 2016, season 15 episode of "Family Guy," "How the Griffins Stole Christmas." Lynch doesn't play a major role, but he does pop up in a cutaway that asks the question, "What if instead of Santa Clause coming down the chimney, it was David Lynch? The result is something that any "Twin Peaks" fan can surely appreciate:
What's nice about this cutaway is that the writers of it clearly seem to have actually watched Lynch's work and can make specific jokes about it. On social media, you'll often see people attempt...

Despite the avant-garde style David Lynch was known for, he had a love for plenty more traditional movies. So much so that one particular mainstream Hollywood classic frequently made its way into his films. The Wizard of Oz is cherished by generations, including the filmmaker/artist who created work that was not so mainstream. Lynch’s passing has left a hole in cinema and television, but his eccentric, nightmarish work lives on, as does his adoration for The Wizard of Oz. He referenced it repeatedly, not just in Wild at Heart (1990) where Laura Dern wears ruby slippers and Laura Palmer shows up as Glinda the Good. The 2022 documentary, Lynch/Oz, follows a weirder Yellow Brick Road to explore how influential the 1939 fantasy musical was to Lynch.

As the moviegoing world continues to reel over the monumental loss of David Lynch — the unique visionary behind classic cult cinema outings like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and many more — his filmmaking techniques continue to inspire and influence movies and television. Hailed for the dream sequences that blur the line between surreality and the unconscious, even HBO's landmark mob drama The Sopranos adopted Lynchian tropes and tenets.
Often imitated but never emulated, David Lynch leaves behind a trove of cinematic treasures that continue to challenge audiences. While there is unlikely to be as singular a filmmaker as Lynch in Hollywood's future, the legacy he leaves behind with Twin Peaks, The Elephant Man, Lost Highway, Wild at Heart, and others will neither be eclipsed nor tarnished by time. With the heaviest of hearts and reverential honor, here's how the late great David Lynch influenced The Sopranos.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree — especially at the Oscars.
I’m Still Here‘s Fernanda Torres and Conclave‘s Isabella Rossellini joined their mothers, Fernanda Montenegro and Ingrid Bergman, respectively, as Oscar nominees on Thursday, becoming the fifth and sixth pairs of mother-daughter duos to be nominated for acting Oscars.
Torres, who cracked the top five in the Best Actress odds after her Golden Globe victory, is up for the award alongside Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Mikey Madison (Anora), and Demi Moore (The Substance). The nomination comes 26 years after Montenegro was shortlisted in the same category for Central Station and lost to Shakespeare in Love‘s Gwyneth Paltrow.

After a four-decade career in films, Isabella Rossellini scored her first Oscar nomination on Thursday for her supporting role as a Vatican nun in “Conclave.”
The nomination places Rossellini in the Academy history books. She is the daughter of three-time Oscar-winning actress Ingrid Bergman. Her father, the Italian neorealist filmmaking legend Roberto Rossellini was also nominated once, in 1950 for his screenplay for “Paisan.”
Swedish acting legend Bergman is often cited as one of the greatest screen icons of all time, famed for her roles in “Casablanca,” “The Bells of St. Marys” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious.” She was a seven-time nominee who won three Oscars: two for Best Actress (“Gaslight” and “Anastasia”) and one for Best Supporting Actress (“Murder on the Orient Express”).
Rossellini’s nomination this year, in fact, comes on the 50th anniversary of her mother’s win for “Orient Express,” an all-star mystery film in which Bergman...
