As long as they keep making money, Disney is going to continue cranking out live-action remakes of its animated classics, even if it means sacrificing its magic in the process. All art is subjective, which means there's no universal truth to declaring what determines the "best" or "worst" of these reimaginings, but I can say with confidence that Rachel Zegler is, hands down, the best live-action Disney Princess we've ever seen. Mind you, I have a deep affinity for Lily James' absolutely perfect portrayal of Cinderella, but I also lamented that she didn't get to sing "A dream is a wish your heart makes." Meanwhile, I'm far less critical of Emma Watson's Belle than most critics, mostly because the "Beauty and the Beast" retelling isn't great, but I can still admit something was lacking to transcend the character into the kind of unignorable magnetism inherent in all Disney Princesses.

As most schoolchildren know, the novels of Roald Dahl are whimsical, delightful, and full of spite. Dahl's stories were rarely sentimental screeds about the magic of childhood, angling instead to describe how horrible kids have it. In most of Dahl's novels, adults are depicted as horrid and abusive, screaming at children and often physically harming them, all while the children live in poverty and destitution. Kids are only free once they stand up to the evil adults in their lives and find a way out of their miserable, Dickensian surroundings.
The films based on the works of Roald Dahl rarely capture the author's impeccable sense of childhood misery. The films, often made by American studios, tend to skew more traditionally "Hollywood," giving them happier endings, more action-packed scenes, and fewer moments of gentle, unusual whimsy. Naturally, Dahl disliked the films based on his books, mostly stemming from his overwhelming...

“The Wretched” sequel is happening.
Five years after the film’s original release, Brett and Drew Pierce (“Deadheads”) and their Little Runway Productions will begin production on “The Wretched 2” this September in Oregon, with casting underway.
The Pierce brothers — who are returning as writers, directors and producers — said in a statement to Variety, “Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like ‘Terrifier 3’ and ‘Late Night With the Devil,’ and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting. I have become so accustomed to defining children’s or family films in this era as animated that when you come upon one that doesn’t fall into that easy definition it is a welcome shock to the system. The Legend of Ochi, premiering today in the Family Matinee section of the Sundance Film Festival, is a throwback, one of those films clearly inspired by more adventurous PG entertainments of the past and never talking down to its intended audience. As a result, the A24 release is a breath of fresh air and a stunning visual treat that will appeal well beyond the youngest members in the household.

Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!
Plot details for Eggers’s Labyrinth sequel remain more mysterious than Jareth’s magnificent package, though sources say the film is a sequel, not a remake, to Henson’s timeless, puppet-populated masterpiece. Eggers will write the script with Sjón, his writing partner for 2022’s The Northman. The duo is...

Clint Eastwood started his acting career in the mid-1950s with various smaller and uncredited parts in both film and TV before landing his first major TV role as Rowdy Yates in Rawhide. This part and his co-starring role for 217 episodes helped transition his career from TV actor to internationally known film superstar, with his breakout roles in the Dollars Trilogy as 'The Man with No Name'. The 1960s were a decade that transformed Eastwood's career and turned him into one of the most important figures in the cinematic landscape.
Eastwood's starring roles in iconic Westerns A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly launched him into the mainstream and showed his undeniable star power. They showed his ability to portray an intense, quiet, yet charismatic lead that helped change not only his career but the genre as a whole, focusing on a...

Clint Eastwood has been a Hollywood icon since he soared to stardom thanks to playing the Man With No Name in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy. Having become one of the film industry's best stars and directors in the years since, the A-lister has taken on dozens of projects, racking up one of the most impressive careers in cinema. However, like most actors, he has his fair share of critical flops and box office failures too.
Best known for his work in the Western and thriller genres, Eastwood has endeared himself to generations of movie fans as a symbol of masculinity and the rugged American spirit. Typically playing the role of macho and abrasive antiheroes, the actor is far from perfect, and some movies show this. While he rarely makes a bad movie, particularly since becoming an icon, he still has his share of stories that, uncredited roles aside, simply...

There is something about the dark fantasy movie genre that just isn't easily replicated. While many a fantasy movie has transported audiences to new and expansive worlds with epic stories of big adventures, historically the genre has also been limited by both technology and budgets that restrain movies from achieving the potential of the stories being told.
The dark fantasy genre, however, often tells smaller scale stories inspired by fairy tales, focusing on eerie atmosphere, stellar creature and set design rather than VFX spectacle. Still, many dark fantasy movies have fantastic special effects that feel as grand and epic as big budget blockbusters. Even in animation, the dark fantasy genre has delivered some of the best and scariest works in the medium.
From the apogee of the genre in the 80s, to modern examples, this list pins down the 10 best dark fantasy movies out there.

Here is Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump reunion movie, but the film's release proves that it is good that a Forrest Gump sequel never happened. While Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have collaborated since Forrest Gump, with the duo working on Cast Away, The Polar Express, and 2022's Pinocchio remake, Here is the first time that Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Robert Zemeckis have all worked together since the 1994 classic. While Here may not be a proper Forrest Gump sequel, the movie's performance has proven that it may be a good think that Forrest Gump 2 never happened.
Ever since Forrest Gump was released in 1994, many fans of the Robert Zemeckis film have been clamoring for a sequel. However, one still hasn't happened. While a second film has been discussed in the past, with a story even being planned, Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis haven't made Forrest Gump 2. Hanks and Zemeckis both...

“Here” is here.
Robert Zemeckis’ latest, which serves as a reunion with his “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, along with that film’s writer Eric Roth, serves as an adaptation of Richard McGuire’s celebrated graphic novel. The movie takes place with a single, locked off location – a suburban living room. Through that living room, though, Zemeckis shows a truly incredible passage of time and zeroes in on the life of a couple (Hanks and Wright) as they maneuver through their own story.
It’s the kind of story that only Zemeckis could tell – epic and yet intimate, technologically advanced but also seamless, universal and specific, elaborate and plainspoken.
But how can you watch “Here” – will you have to leave your living room to watch the story of somebody else’s living room? Well, we’ve got you covered.
What is the release date?
“Here” hits theaters on November 1.

It’s shaping up to be a Huston family Christmas.
Siblings and Hollywood royalty Anjelica and Danny Huston are teaming on a new project, The Christmas Witch Trial of La Befana, a hybrid animated and live-action feature film that is currently shooting in Los Angeles and Ontario, Canada.
HighballTV confirmed the details of the film, which was written by David James Brock and HighballTV’s Melissa D’Agostino based on an idea they conceived with Matt Campagna who is also directing with D’Agostino, a frequent creative partner. Johnathan Sharp is producing.
The plot follows a peculiar court case that unspools after the children in a rural Italian village kidnap their legendary Christmas witch, played by Huston, and put her on trial in an attempt to stop her annual judgment from their lives. While casting a spell through witches, fantasy and Italian folklore, the project is said to touch on universal themes of grief,...

Robert Zemeckis reunites with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for an ugly de-aged nightmare that boringly follows the same house throughout time
A swirl of concern and outright fear has long been following Robert Zemeckis’s unusual big bet Here, a 30-year reunion for his Forrest Gump co-stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. The film, based on Richard McGuire’s comic strip turned graphic novel, was heralded as the most ambitious use of digital de-aging yet, following the pair through the decades, from teenage years to final days, as part of an ensemble of characters who have lived in the same space over time. Early stills, and a trailer, had clued us into the film being plainly terrifying but nothing had quite prepared us for just how unforgivably dull it would also be. Here lies the year’s most eerie and embarrassing misfire.

Robert Zemeckis has always been a filmmaker who doubles as a magician. His films are loaded with neat little tricks, and, as is the case with any good magician, you find yourself wondering how he pulled them off. His debut "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" used clever editing, archival footage, and stand-ins to recreate the Beatles' debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The "Back to the Future" trilogy is bursting with eye-popping special effects. "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" seamlessly blended live-action and animation. "Death Becomes Her" is overloaded with gross-out gags. "Forrest Gump" found fun little ways to insert Tom Hanks into moments of televised American history. The list goes on and on. But at some point, the trickery began to overwhelm the process. His "Beowulf," "The Polar Express," and "A Christmas Carol" embraced heavy motion-capture animation with ghastly, uncanny valley results ("The Polar Express" has somehow become a recurring...

Critics' reviews for Tom Hanks' new movie, Here, have arrived, but they are not so great. Based on the 2014 graphic novel by Richard McGuire, Here tells the story of multiple generations of couples and families who have lived in the same house spanning centuries. Killers of the Flower Moon screenwriter Eric Roth co-wrote the film with Oscar-winning filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis, who also produced and directed the film. From an evil queen pondering “Mirror, mirror on the wall: Who is the fairest of them all?” to Three Weird Sisters chanting “Double, double toil and trouble! Fire burn, and cauldron bubble,” witchcraft has been something of a skeleton key across centuries of storytelling on screen and in print. As old as ghost stories themselves, witches are fabled beings — typically more human than creature, but sometimes vice versa — known for using magic to abuse and manipulate us mere mortals.
Some witches feed on children; see Roald Dahl‘s “The Witches” and its two film adaptations starring Anjelica Huston and Anne Hathaway respectively. Some witches just want to be loved; consider the appropriately-named “The Love Witch” or the middle chunk of “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Others crave beauty, youth, power, or something altogether more sinister; think the unending greed examined in Luca Guadagnino’s astounding re-imagining of Dario Argento’s “Suspiria.

During the latest episode of Agatha All Along, "Through Many Miles of Tricks and Trials," we see Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven of witches, plus Teen (Joe Locke), go up against their first trial along The Witches Road. However, despite the dark stakes, poisoned wine, and vivid hallucinations, one moment in particular stood out as truly frightening. That is the moment when Sharon (Debra Jo Rupp) says to the rest of the witches Wanda? Wanda, Im begging you. Let him breathe, please. Its such a different look at Debra Jo Rupp in this role, and comes out of almost nowhere. We knew the wine was poisoned by this point, identified by Jen (Sasheer Zamata) as Alewifes Revenge. However, it's still shocking how the hallucinations are not abstract horror, but cause the victim to go through traumatic hallucinations which appear to be tied to their past.

The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 5, "Halls of Stone," now streaming on Prime Video.
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, fans are witnessing the full game that Sauron played in Middle-earth's past. It's rewriting J. R. R. Tolkien's lore, expanding the story of his shape-shifting to Annatar. This allows him to work in a different form at the Eregion Forge and make the mystical rings.
Ironically, Season 2 confirms the most irredeemable character in the show isn't Sauron, but the master Elven forger, Celebrimbor. There's also a huge reason why Celebrimbor is to blame for what transpired down the line with the One Ring, no matter how evil Sauron is.

“Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is a certified Criterion title, believe it or not.
The beloved franchise about a beloved occult teen, iconically played by Melissa Joan Hart, is officially amongst the new streaming selections for the Criterion Channel. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” centered on Sabrina (Hart), a high school student who lives with her two aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick) as she navigates coming into her powers. Her cat Salem (Frank Conniff) also provides snarky spiritual guidance.
The ABC-produced franchise was based on the comic book series that debuted in 1971. The “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” show is available to stream on Paramount+ as of 2023.
The 1996 TV movie was a spinoff of the TV series, and was followed by 1998’s “Sabrina Goes to Rome” and 1999’s “Sabrina Down Under.”
Now, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” joins Criterion’s “Witches” programming for October 2024, ushering in the 40-year anniversary of the Criterion platform.

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

Diana Bishop got her philosophy doctorate at the University of Oxford, she’s one of the youngest ever to be tenured at Yale, and she’s a published author. She’s also a witch — but she’d prefer to ignore that part of her identity. She’s not well-versed in magic, and she’d like to keep it that way. In fact, she can barely control her powers. I can't recommend Oddity enough to Daily Dead readers. From writer / director Damian Mc Carthy the film plays like an Amicus horror film segment, with excellent acting, and enough scares to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I had the chance to talk with Damian Mc Carthy, who spoke about his love of horror, and the making of the film:
I loved Oddity and it's very clear from watching the film how much you love the horror genre. Can you talk about your early experiences watching horror movies?
Damian Mc Carthy: My parents had a VHS store when I was growing up, so I was always in the horror section. My dad was a big horror fan, so he was always showing me '80s movies, like Poltergeist and Alien. So that's where the love of it began, and I just wanted to know more about it,...

Since we’re talking about the short films, I’ll accordingly keep this brief. Here are five reasons why “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” will win the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film.
1. It’s the clear standout in the category.
All five nominees are exceptional — the others being “The After,” “Red, White and Blue,” “Invincible” and “Knight of Fortune.” In a less competitive year, any one of them could easily walk away with the prize. But it’s simply too hard for anything to top “Henry Sugar.” Based on the short story of the same name by celebrated children’s author Roald Dahl, the film is seamlessly adapted to the screen with the same charm, wit and magic of the original tale. “Henry Sugar” features superb acting, exquisite costume and production design, beautiful cinematography and sharp editing. It holds an outstanding 95% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

Despite how prevalent they are in spooky media, you’d be surprised at how rare it used to be for traditionally recognizable witches to be the main antagonists in scary movies. Sure, we got the eerie crones of the pseudo-documentary Haxan and even a dancing coven in Suspiria, but for the longest time, witches were relegated to humorous stereotypes akin to the Sanderson Sisters rather than anything truly terrifying. It’s only recently that modern classics like The Witch and Gretel and Hansel have made potions and broomsticks scary again, revisiting the disturbing origins of these myths in ways that genre films of the 20th century simply couldn’t handle.
There are a few exceptions to this rule, however, and one of my favorites just so happens to be a bizarre trilogy that dared to ask what would happen if a potion-brewing maniac from the early days of America found himself transported to modern times.

Modern kids entertainment is often too concerned about upsetting children to give horror a chance, but kids can handle more than we give them credit for. Kids found horror through gaming, social media, and internet culture, leading to the popularity of games like Five Nights at Freddy's. Kids horror dominated culture in the '90s and 2000s, with films like The Witches and Goosebumps, but has since faded due to controversy and parental concerns.

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.

Classic Hollywood stars, known for their work in other genres, also took on roles in horror movies, delivering iconic performances. Famous actresses like Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford showcased their talent in psychological horror films, proving their versatility. Notable actors such as Charlton Heston and Gregory Peck dipped their toes into the horror genre, adding depth to their filmography.
Many actors choose to stay away from horror movies for different reasons, so it might come as a surprise that some classic Hollywood actors, known for their works in other genres, appeared in at least one horror movie. The horror genre has seen a variety of actors, many of them known for their performances in other genres, while others dedicate most of their careers to appearing in scary movies. However, what might seem surprising to many, is to know that some classic Hollywood stars also gave the horror genre a chance at some point.

Netflix has successfully adapted Roald Dahl's works with respect and creativity, and there is potential for them to adapt other children's authors like Enid Blyton. The success of Wes Anderson's take on Dahl's short stories shows Netflix's commitment to honoring the original material and exploring new interpretations. There is a need for imaginative and intelligent adaptations of children's books, and Netflix has the opportunity to fill this gap by bringing classic literature, like Blyton's The Faraway Tree, to a new generation.
After Netflix bought the rights to Roald Dahl's entire catalog of works, audiences were intrigued by what they would do with the material. Dahl is a prolific British children's author who has created some of the most memorable stories within the medium. From the Bfg to Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Family, there have been many different attempts to take these narratives to the big screen.

Wes Anderson will adapt three additional Roald Dahl short stories, including "The Swan," "Poison," and "Ratcatcher," for "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar" anthology. Anderson describes the short films as "very, very strange" and reveals that "Ratcatcher" comes from an obscure Dahl book set in rural England. Anderson expresses his opposition to censorship and editing of Dahl's works, stating that once a piece of art is done, it should not be modified, and that only the author should have the authority to make changes.

Wes Anderson’s new short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marks the second time the director has made an adaptation of a work by the celebrated author Roald Dahl. So, it’s no surprise that when he held a press conference at the Venice Film Festival for the premiere on Friday, September 1st, he was asked about his thoughts on the edits publishers made to Dahl’s books for a recently released collection meant for kids, which included rewrites intended to remove “offensive” language.
“Certainly no one who is not an author should be modifying somebody’s book,” he said at the press conference. “I don’t even want the artist to modify their work… I understand the motivation for it, but I’m in the school where, when the piece of work is done, we participate in it. The audience participates in it. We know it. So,...

Released in 1991, Drop Dead Fred is an American comedy starring Phoebe Cates as a woman having just been left by her partner, and featured Rik Mayall as her repressed childhood imaginary friend/imp/demon. Most famed now for English comic actor Mayall's hurried and exhaustingly manic performance as the red-haired/green-suited Fred, the movie itself has found a second lease in life through its take on mental health in the most creative, appropriately imaginative, and colorful of ways.

The Sandman proved to be a critical success for Netflix after the cast managed to bring the iconic comic book characters to life. Based on the Neil Gaiman comic book series, which ran from 1989-1996, The Sandman mainly follows the life of Dream/Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), who is forced to track down totems of power after he is captured by a wizard and imprisoned in a glass bottle for 106 years later. However, complications soon arose when Dream/Morpheus discovers that many of these totems are in the hands of several powerful entities, and he must bargain with them if he wants to restore his kingdom, the Dreaming, back to its natural state.
While Sturridge perfectly embodies Morpheus/Dream's stubborn and complex personality, he isn't the only character to stand out in The Sandman. Also among the cast are several recognizable and high-profile stars, including Gwendoline Christie, David Thewlis, Joely Richardson,...

Netflix has landed the feature film rights to Kotaro Isaka’s novel, “Seesaw Monster.” The film version is set to star Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault as rivals forced to work together.
Isaka is best known for writing “Maria Beetle,” which was adapted into 2022’s comedic thriller “Bullet Train” starring Brad Pitt. “Seesaw Monster” is not related to the Japanese author’s “Hitman” trilogy, which includes “Maria Beetle” and “Three Assassins,” the inspiration behind the 2015 movie “Grasshopper.”
Plot details for “Seesaw Monster” haven’t been revealed, but Netflix describes the movie as “an action-comedy two-hander” between Hathaway and Hayek Pinault. Anne Hathaway comments on the popular The Devil Wears Prada theory that Nate is the true villain of the movie. The 2006 classic stars Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Adrien Grenier, and was major hit in the early 2000s. The Devil Wears Prada tells the story of aspiring journalist Andy (Hathaway), who lands what seems to be a dream job at a prestigious fashion magazine. However, when she gets there, the job is not all she thought it would be, as she suddenly finds herself as a personal assistant to cold and demanding editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, played brilliantly by Streep and inspired by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
In the movie, Miranda appears to be the obvious villain, making Andy's life a living hell. Instead of writing stories as she so desperately wanted, Hathaway's Andy finds herself doing absurd tasks and getting more and more isolated from friends and family, as...
