Image Source: Amazon Back in 1991, Bette Midler and the late James Caan teamed up for a film called For The Boys. While it had a modestly promising start with a limited release in just two theaters the weekend before Thanksgiving, things took a sharp downturn when it opened nationwide the following week. Despite its heartfelt performances and ambition, the film struggled to connect with a wider audience. It pulled in only $4.5 million during its first weekend in wide release and disappeared from most theaters by Christmas, managing to earn just $17.8 million overall—a far cry from its hefty $40 million budget. The film follows the extraordinary journey of Dixie Leonard, a gifted Uso performer, and Eddie Sparks, a charismatic comedian, as their bond evolves over the course of five decades. From entertaining troops during World War II to navigating the tumult of the Vietnam War era and ultimately facing the challenges...

Bleecker Street’s new comedy “The Fabulous Four” finds Bette Midler doing what she does best: broad comedy with a touch of poignancy peeking out from just beneath the surface.
It’s a quality that characterizes many of Midler’s most memorable performances in films like “The First Wives Club,” “Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” and “That Old Feeling,” and according to Midler, it’s been part of her approach since the beginning.
“When I worked live, starting from the time I was 19, I was very much aware of the melancholy underneath certain kinds of scenes,” Midler told IndieWire in a recent interview. “There’s a musical term for it: contrapuntal. ‘Miss M’ is loud and boisterous on the outside, but there’s an undercurrent of despair because it’s very hard to be a human being.”

There are only 19 Egot winners in history, but many people are only one award away from achieving an Egot. Actors like Jeremy Irons, Al Pacino, and Jessica Lange have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting, missing only a Grammy in their Egot lineup. Musically talented performers Cynthia Erivo and Ben Platt both won their first Tony, Grammy, and Emmy in less than a year, leaving only an Oscar win to reach Egot status.
An Egot is no easy feat, but many actors and other creatives in show business are only missing one of the four types of awards needed to achieve the prestigious award status. Coined by Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas in 1984 (via Vanity Fair), Egot is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, the four major performing arts awards in the American entertainment industry. If you're not well-versed in the extended Barbie universe of animated films and TV shows, you're in luck, because the new Netflix series "Barbie: A Touch of Magic" is the perfect streaming chaser for those still riding the high of Greta Gerwig's live-action "Barbie" movie. While the Barbie brand has been equal parts loved and at the center of controversy for over half a century, Mattel has been seriously putting in the work to make sure that every child feels seen, loved, and affirmed by Barbie.
So while it may have been groundbreaking for some to hear America Ferrera's monologue about womanhood in "Barbie," these sorts of lessons have been at the core of animated Barbie (especially the Barbie Vlog series on YouTube) for quite some time. In the lead-up to Gerwig's "Barbie," the 2012 animated series "Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse" routinely hit the top 10 on Netflix, and...

Only seven films have won both Best Actor and Best Actress. Jack Sheldon, the stand-out jazz trumpeter and affable Merv Griffin sidekick whose gave voice to the Schoolhouse Rock classics I’m Just a Bill and Conjunction Junction, has died. He was 88.
Sheldon’s face and name were most recognizable to fans of The Merv Griffin Show thanks to his 16-year sidekick stint but his trumpeting reached its greatest acclaim via the big screen with the forlorn Oscar- and Grammy-winning song The Shadow of Your Smile from The Sandpiper (1965).
Sheldon’s voice, however, became a signature part of Saturday morning cartoons for years thanks to two beloved installments of the oft-repeated Schoolhouse Rock educational series of animated shorts. The ABC series was ramping up its second season when it brought Sheldon in and the charismatic jazzman delivered winning performances both as the dedicated train conductor from Conjunction Junction (1974) and lonely piece of proposed legislation in the civics-minded I’m Just a Bill.

The Boys are back to work – and business is booming. Filming is now underway in Toronto for Season 2 of the Amazon Original series The Boys, the ultra-violent and proudly pervy superhero drama that premiered on Amazon Prime on July 26 and already ranks as the digital platform’s fastest breakout ever and its best-reviewed original series to date.
The show’s fan following has already put The Boys at No 39 on IMDb’s list of television’s all-time best series.
The series adapts the comics series (2006-2012) by writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson and it’s part of a wave of subversive superhero screen projects that flip the script on conventional superhero fare by making the costumed crusaders intriguingly dysfunctional.

Long before Reese Witherspoon or Nicole Kidman produced their own material, Bette Midler was calling all the shots on her productions. In 1985, she signed a blockbuster multi-movie deal at Disney’s Touchstone Pictures, making her the highest-paid actress of her time. But in addition to a massive paycheck, she also wanted to be empowered to make decisions. Midler launched her company All Girl Prods. to steer her own soon-to-be hits, such as “Beaches,” “For the Boys” and “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.”
“I had always felt from the time I started in the business that there was a kind of bias against women in positions of power,” Midler tells Variety on a recent afternoon in Los Angeles. “If you went to a pitch meeting, you’d often be the only female in the room.”

Bette Midler has taken her talents to the Oscars stage.
The legend, 73, performed “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns at the 2019 Academy Awards on Sunday night.
After being introduced as the “Divine Miss M” (a nod to her 1972 studio album and stage persona) by Keegan Michael-Key — who descended from the ceiling, Mary Poppins-style! — Midler took the stage to deliver a dazzling rendition of the song.

Keegan-Michael Key took flight over Hollywood’s biggest stars at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday.
Before introducing Bette Midler‘s performance of the Oscar-nominated song “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns, Key, 47, flew from the orchestra pit to the ceiling of the Dolby Theater just like the magical nanny herself.
The actor spun a few times as he floated down and held a black umbrella. He landed in the middle of the aisle, where he fumbled with the umbrella for a bit before introducing Midler’s performance.

Did the Oscars finally get something right this year? After numerous hurtles, it has been announced that Bette Midler will be appearing on stage to sing the Oscar nominate song 'The Place Where Lost Things Go' during the live telecast. And when she's done, there shouldn't be a dry eye in the house.
Emily Blunt was not able to perform the Mary Poppins Returns song on the telecast, so last week, The Academy began teasing a very special surprise guest. Immediately fans began speculating that it would be Julie Andrews, the original Mary Poppins, who does not actually appear in the movie. But Andrews, who is 83, has had complications from vocal cord surgery, and she isn't doing much singing at the present time.

We were glad to hear that the Motion Picture Academy decided to showcase performances of all five best song nominees during its 91st ceremony that airs February 24 on ABC. That announcement came in response to a backlash took place when it was originally decided that only “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” and “All the Stars” from “Black Panther” would be peformed on air.
But there was one big question mark. It was revealed that Emily Blunt, who stars as the magical nanny in “Mary Poppins Returns,” didn’t want the pressure of performing “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, that she sings in the film. We had some fun guessing which Disney-adjacent vocalist would tackle the ballad, predicting everyone from Lin-Manuel Miranda, who plays Jack the lamplighter in the sequel, and Angela Lansbury, who has a cameo as a balloon lady,...

Bette Midler will perform “The Place Where Lost Things Go” at the Oscar ceremonies on Feb. 24, Variety has learned.
Midler, a longtime friend of composer-lyricist Marc Shaiman, will sing the song originally performed by Emily Blunt in “Mary Poppins Returns.” The song, by Shaiman and his lyricist partner Scott Wittman, is one of five nominees for best original song.
The Academy teased this on Jan. 31 by tweeting, “Spoiler Alert: It will be performed by a surprise special guest.”
This was in the aftermath of a Variety report about the original plan, which was to perform only two of the five nominated songs (“Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” and “All the Stars” from “Black Panther”). The backlash resulted in the Academy’s decision to perform all five nominated songs, including the one from “Mary Poppins Returns.”
Shaiman is expected to accompany Midler on piano.

Interviewing Charlie Saldana in the quiet of his North Hollywood home, the 79-year-old working key grip still exudes the cool confidence of someone who’s spent a lifetime in partnership with one of Hollywood’s great directors: Clint Eastwood.
Saldana still possesses an actor’s looks, with a salt-white mustache and a full silver mane. He began his career building scaffolding for Disney’s “Pollyanna” in 1960, following military service in the 101st Airborne Division. Joining the grip union, he was employed by Hollywood’s blossoming TV industry on “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Gomer Pyle, Usmc” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “The Mod Squad.” The neophyte grip learned his craft well.
Born in 1939 to Charles and Josephine Saldana, Charlie was raised with a strong work ethic that drove his rise in the industry. “Gaining grip skill was a layered, educative process,” he says.

On December 1, 2018, Bette Midler will celebrate her 73rd birthday. Midler has had one of the most varied and successful careers in show business encompassing success on stage, screen and in the recording industry. She shows no signs of slowing down either since she has just completed one of her most successful ventures ever, starring for a year on Broadway in the revival of the musical “Hello Dolly!” That performance earned her a Tony Award as Best Actress in Musical. She has also won three Emmys, three Grammys, and three Golden Globes over the course of her career. One of the Emmys came for her much loved classic television moment when she sang on the second to last episode of Johnny Carson’s tenure as host of “The Tonight Show.”

Bette Midler is in negotiations to portray Bella Abzug opposite Julianne Moore in the Gloria Steinem biopic “The Glorias: A Life on the Road.”
Alicia Vikander is in talks to play Steinem in her 20s and 30s. Julie Taymor is directing the movie for June Pictures, and Sarah Ruhl is adapting Steinem’s memoir for the screen.
June Pictures’ Andrew Duncan and Alex Saks are producing with Taymor and Lynn Hendee. Steinem and Amy Richards will be executive producers.
Steinem became a leading spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the 1960s and ’70s. She and Abzug, Shirley Chisholm, and Betty Friedan founded the National Women’s Political Caucus.
Abzug was a New York-based attorney with the nickname “Battling Bella.” She was an early participant in the antiwar group Women Strike for Peace and went on to become a U.S. representative for three terms between 1971 and 1977 after campaigning on the slogan,...

Lady Gaga has leaped into the lead in our combined Gold Derby odds for Best Actress at the Oscars. Her first on-screen feature film role in “A Star Is Born” has 19/5 top odds over more traditional actresses Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) and Viola Davis (“Widows”). But a win by a music star in an acting category wouldn’t be a first at the Academy Awards.
Two of the all-time greats took home Oscar gold decades ago. Frank Sinatra managed to parlay his huge success as a singer to a pretty solid film career. Another classic movie gets an anniversary that makes me feel older than I want to be. The first Blu-ray set is a regular standard edition that you can buy on Amazon and several other retailers. We don't know if there will be any new special features available on the Blu-ray release, but I'm sure it will include some stuff that fans have never seen before.
The second is a Target exclusive version of the Hocus Pocus which comes with a 40-age gallery book giving fans a behind the scenes look at the film.

90s Disney fans rejoice: We're getting a 25th anniversary steelbook edition of Hocus Pocus. The steelbook will be available exclusively at Best Buy next month. The design borrows from the spell book featured in the movie and looks pretty fantastic. If you're a fan of the movie, it's hard to imagine having a better looking version of the flick to put on your shelf. The retailer hasn't released full details on what will be included with the release, but it looks like this will be a single-disc edition. It's unclear at the present time if the steelbook will come with a digital copy of the movie as well, though, that's become common practice these days.
The Hocus Pocus steelbook retails for $29.99. It's not clear as of right now what, if any, new special features will be included with the release. It looks like Best Buy has the biggest draw with its fancy packaging,...

Ellen Burstyn and James Caan are starring in the romantic comedy “Welcome to Pine Grove!” with shooting expected to begin later this summer.
Astute Films is the production company. Producers are Harrison Powell, Dominique Telson, and Fred Bernstein. Executive producers are Rick Jackson and Claudine Marrotte.
Burstyn will play a widow who moves into the Pine Grove Senior Community and discovers it’s just like high school, full of cliques and flirtatious suitors. Caan plays the hot new guy at Pine Grove and Burstyn’s love interest.
Donald Martin wrote the screenplay based on a story by Powell, which was inspired by his grandmother’s own experience of moving into a retirement community.
“’Welcome to Pine Grove!’ is ‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘Golden Girls’ in a senior community,” said Powell. “We wanted to make a film that inspires others because it is never too late to make friends, to laugh, to dance,...

The idea behind 1978's Scared Straight was to take teenage delinquents to New Jersey's Rahway State Prison, where they'd be terrified into choosing the path of righteousness after hearing hardcore inmates scream at them about the horrors of incarceration. The convicts would get in a teen's face with neck-bulging intensity and harangue him with details of penitentiary life — where, in one convict's words, "the big eat the little."

Even though she’s widely considered to be the Queen of Dry Wit, sitting in the hotel room where we’re about to talk about her latest film Ingrid Goes West, there’s an unexpected innocence to Aubrey Plaza that makes her seem more like Sandy from Grease before the makeover. She’s wearing a dark baseball jacket over a lovely plaid dress in blush tones, and rather than welcoming me with a raised eyebrow, she smiles. I reach out my hand to her to say hello and apologize because it’s cold, she raises the eyebrow and explains, “I’m sorry too because my hand is warm.” And suddenly Sandy has given path to the sardonic Rizzo. Since her breakthrough in Parks & Recreation, Plaza has become one of the funniest people in the industry. Period. Few actors can accomplish so much using so little and making it seem so effortless,...

I’ve listened to many podcasts during the long upstate winter and one of my favorites has been Karina Longworth’s You Must Remember This. It’s billed as a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. I enjoy it because Longworth spins great yarns, with vivid insights, about Hollywood stars and their careers.
But I think there’s more to why it’s popular and why I enjoy it so much. I’m starting to realize that the inevitable ups and downs of yesteryear’s Hollywood Stars are analogous to the rollercoaster rides that categorize so many of today’s careers.
It’s astounding to hear about how a legendary star’s career might have floundered at one point, only to do a complete 360 as he or she gets cast in a successful blockbuster movie. Thundering successes and crushing failures become the...

While it shouldn’t be a surprise that women enjoy having sex and embracing their sexuality, the true nature of female arousal remains a fairly mysterious thing. There’s a long-held fallacy that women don’t like porn as a rule, for instance, wiping out one source of the excites that is incredibly easy access when the question of arousal comes up. We do, by the way, we just don’t feel the need to tell everyone about it.
But that doesn’t mean that women don’t get turned on by films. It’s just that it might well surprise you to hear which ones do it.
Now whilst men probably wouldn’t even consider suggesting these film titles to your love interest – because they’re either typically considered “Ones For The Boys” (seriously, that still happens) or are written off entirely as not for male viewers...

On Friday, my wife Rochelle and I were invited to see Take That on tour. You know what? You have to hand it to Gary, Mark and Howard, they really know how to put on a show - or should I say a spectacle. Also, you know you have had some serious hits when a show that is over two hours long just flies by. Big shout out to Gary for inviting us down, we absolutely loved it, top man!
Sunday it was of course all about the Vodafone Big Top 40. All eyes once again were on the number one spot.

"Show Me Love" never sounded so good.
When Samuel L. Jackson sings karaoke, he sings karaoke.
Watch: 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Cast Gets Wild at Comic-Con
The actor stole the spotlight on Thursday night at One For The Boys #SingOne4TheBoys charity event at Abbey Road Studios in London when he hit the stage with Robin S' 1993 hit "Show Me Love."
Watch and enjoy.
Watch: Samuel L. Jackson Recites 'Boy Meets World' Slam Poetry
But this isn't the first time Jackson has covered a hit song. Remember when he rocked Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap" (in a pink wig)? Or when he sorta-sang Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"? They were both amazing, and you can see them in the video above.
Jackson returns as Nick Fury when Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters in May. Now if only Joss Whedon would give Nick a microphone…

The Englishman’s long but sporadic career included an Oscar and BAFTA nomination for his art direction and set decoration on 1981’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Assheton Gorton’s daughter told local paper the Shropshire Star that he died in his sleep September 14 at his home near the England-Wales border. He was 84. Gorton also worked on such well-known films as Michelangelo Antonioni‘s Blow-Up (1966) — scoring his first BAFTA nom — Ridley Scott’s Tom Cruise starrer Legend (1985) and Disney’s live-action 101 Dalmatians (1996) and sequel 102 Dalmatians (2000), both starring Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil. Gorton worked on fewer than 20 films during his four-decade career, including The Magic Christian (1969), Get Carter (1971), For the Boys (1991), Rob Roy (1995) and Shadow of the Vampire (2000). He also worked on a handful of television programs including ITV’s Armchair Theatre and 1980 NBC miniseries The Martian Chronicles.

The “Pulp Fiction” actor will host a fundraiser for One For the Boys (a charity to educate men about male-targeting cancers) at the Victoria & Albert Museum during the first day of London Collections: Men.
And Jackson isn’t the only star on the docket for the shindig- Simon Pegg, Tom Hiddleston, Luke Evans and David Walliams will serve as models.
Samuel told press, “Men don’t tend to talk about their health issues, worrying about appearing vulnerable. The problem is that they do not have enough information on the subject. One For The Boys focuses on cutting through the noise to educate men, in the hope that we can have a similar reach to that of the pink campaigns.”...
