A fun piece of trivia: one of J.J. Abrams' first professional gigs was writing the music for Don Dohler's 1982 horror cheapie "Nightbeast." Dohler, as B-movie fans might know, is the creative mind behind "The Alien Factor" and "Galaxy Invader," movies that were filmed mostly in the woods. Abrams has since become one of the preeminent makers of big-budget mainstream blockbusters, so it's fun to picture him as a teen handing over tapes to a hard-working schlockmeister like Dohler.
Abrams stuck with it, though, and eventually sold a film treatment to screenwriter Paul Mazursky when he was still in college. That treatment became Arthur Hiller's 1990 comedy "Taking Care of Business" with Jim Belushi. Abrams continued to rise through the ranks of Tinseltown from there, penning the scripts for films like "Regarding Henry," "Forever Young," and, uh, "Gone Fishin'." Bubba Ho-Tep offers a unique take on Elvis Presley's life, with a twist that sets it apart from other biopics. Bruce Campbell pays tribute to the anniversary of Presley's death by reflecting on the surreal nature of portraying the late singer at the same age as when he died. Despite lacking Presley's iconic music due to budget constraints, Bubba Ho-Tep remains a cult classic in the horror genre.
As the late singer enjoys a surge in popularity amid multiple recent biopics, Bruce Campbell reflects on playing Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep. The Evil Dead star led the cast of the 2002 horror-comedy as Presley, who actually swapped places with an impersonator after becoming disillusioned with stardom, and now lives in a Texas retirement home, where no one believes he's the real Elvis. When the residents of the retirement home become the target of a revived mummy, Elvis and a...

"He's ready to rock!" Giant Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an absolutely terrible, worse-then-The-Asylum movie called Elvis From Outer Space, from directors M. Z. Silverman & Tracy Wuischpard. Everyone likes to laugh at this kind of junk, so why not post it anyway. The King of Rock n' Roll space clone has blasted into Vegas from the far side of the universe to compete in an Elvis impersonation contest against the best in town. But just as he is on the verge of Taking Care of Business, he mysteriously vanishes. Who's behind the disappearance? Any guesses? Maybe it was... aliens?! Who knows. Starring George Thomas, David Heavener, Barry Ratcliffe, Diane Yang, Robert Miano, Frank Cavestani, Lauren Elaine, and Sonny West. I'm ashamed to even promote this film, but I hope no one wastes any actual money on it. Here's the first official trailer for Silverman & Wuischpard's Elvis From Outer Space,...

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 31 Episode 5
The Simpsons, season 31, episode 5, "Gorillas on the Mast," pits the joys of altruism against the pleasures of self-interest and, oddly for the series, beneficence wins. The sad news is it is at the cost of the humor.
Latter day Simpsons episodes are increasingly front-heavy. They chum the water with dollops of brilliance, like asking Groundskeeper Willie to help free a whale, which is a pointed but subtle reference to the 1993 screen classic Free Willy, or watching him play air bagpipes, but haven't been landing the big catch. Too many of the last few seasons' entries peak during the first segments. "Gorillas on the Mast" ships two subplots, Homer buying a boat and Bart and Lisa freeing vicious animals.

Arthur Hiller was never the coolest filmmaker in the room. He leaves behind a list of films that were genuinely loved by audiences and an ocean of collaborators and friends who speak of him in glowing terms, and honestly, as a storyteller, what more could anyone ask? There’s certainly some cachet in the idea that you’re breaking new ground stylistically or you’re doing things that other people are ripping off or you’re part of some formal movement of deconstructionists. I like plenty of filmmakers who chase cool like it is oxygen, necessary for their entire existence. Arthur Hiller, though, was a meat and potatoes kind of guy, and he made movies that spoke to his optimistic view of who we could be as people, shot through with just a hint of cynicism at times. My personal favorite of his movies is The In-Laws, which I just rewatched a few weeks ago.

At the annual fundraising centerpiece for the Montclair Film Festival — which kicks off at the end of April — Abrams joined Stephen Colbert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s main hall Saturday night for an extensive celebrity nerd-off in front of an audience of nearly 2,800. The 90-plus-minute discussion summarized the Bad Robot honcho’s rise from script doctor to sci-fi hotshot, included loads of Abrams-Colbert trivia (the latter auditioned for the former’s first script, which became Taking Care of Business), and somehow managed to provide even more fuel for the Star Wars hype machine. Read on for the highlights (and one unrelated gem):1. The Force Awakens is basically done.On Saturday morning, “at 2:30 in the morning, we finished the mix of the movie,...

The Equalizer – a movie that desperately tries to spin Denzel Washington’s role as something wholly new and inventive, yet anyone familiar with one of Hollywood’s most established talents will know exactly the kind of performance Washington brings to Robert McCall. In what could essentially be a prequel to Man On Fire, director Antoine Fuqua creates a “different kind of superhero” by remaking a 1980s television series that originally starred Edward Woodward, finding a hero who lets his actions speak louder than words ever could. Denzel is a tight-lipped badass who knows his way around a home improvement store, but The Equalizer sets out to be something more than another action-centric thriller – an achievement that borders success long enough to hold our attention.

After seven seasons replete with bloodshed, tears and enough drama to fuel a telenovela, Sons Of Anarchy’s reign has finally come to an end. Attempting to sum up whether or not creator Kurt Sutter did the show justice isn’t the biggest query at stake here. The more important question to be answered is: did he see off the boys of Samcro with the showy farewell they all deserved? Whatever that may be.
Whether or not you have become repulsed by Jax’s behaviour in the last… well, since the show began, his devil-may-care attitude has wooed half the ladies of Charming and a flock of dedicated Soa fans. With that in mind, it stands to reason that his inevitable romanticized downfall would be squeezed for every inch of drama. The decision to over-extend this season to practically 90-minute episodes has been lambasted, but for the finale – all is forgiven,...

In March a friend of mine got married in Puerto Rico, I had been working out regularly leading up to the trip, but after I got home I haven't been to the gym anywhere near as regularly. In fact, over the last three months I haven't exercised much outside of walking the dog. All my life I have worked out and lifted weights for bulk rather than... restrict paid="true" ...lean muscle, which makes it hard to get back into lifting, especially when years of basketball have essentially destroyed my ankles and weakened my knees. So, I found a workout worth trying, it targeted everything I was looking to focus on and wouldn't put an extreme amount of stress on my knees and what exercises do put stress on my knees,...

Jj Abrams now runs the world's two biggest sci-fi franchises. So what's he doing venturing into literature? Stuart Kelly goes looking for clues
The Übergeek. The Boy With All the Toys. The Lord of the Nerds. It might seem as if the most significant achievement of Jeffrey Jacob "Jj" Abrams, screenwriter, actor, producer, director, composer and author, is to have made fanboy culture part of the mainstream. But the publication of "his" first novel – more on those inverted commas anon – also shows that the avant garde and the experimental are in the ascendant. The fusion of popular culture and continental philosophy – works which are as au fait with Foucault as with the Flash, Boba Fett and Baudrillard, Kierkegaard and Kirk – are everywhere, from the novels of China Miéville, Michael Chabon and Scarlett Thomas, to the comics work of Grant Morrison and Mike Carey, to TV shows such as Agents of Shield.

Generally, screenwriting is reserved for a thankless group of nerds who spend most of their waking hours making "Star Wars" references and lamenting their low position on the Hollywood totem pole.
But once in a while, the ladies and gentlemen behind the scripts end up becoming household name ... or move on from other successful careers to take a stab at screenwriting. And whether it's to make a buck, help out a buddy or take on a new challenge, these scribes sometimes end up scoring some pretty unexpected gigs.
So, upon the revelation that titan of twist M. Night Shyamalan was allegedly though perhaps wasn't after all involved in writing "She's All That" (1999), a movie about how beautiful women become even more beautiful when they take off their glasses and wear their hair down, we've assembled a list of some other well-known writers whose names are attached to some surprising projects.

Hollywood loves to categorise people. As every actor and director knows, it is all too easy to get pigeonholed on the back of a single successful film or an early role taken purely to pay the bills. Inside many daytime soap stars are Shakespeareans longing to play Hamlet. Perhaps some of the best action film directors, in their dark moments of the soul, will be kept awake at night by a gnawing urge to direct a low-budget independent film of deep artistic worth.
