In one scene, Happy Gilmore actor Christopher McDonald briefly appears as an angry golfer. The role is very similar to Shooter McGavin, the antagonist McDonald played in Happy Gilmore. He's only credited as "golfer," and he's not identified by name, but the nod to Happy Gilmore will still be obvious for fans of the Adam Sandler comedy. Netflix and Will Ferrell are partnering up for a new comedy series for the streaming platform. It's also setting a first for the accomplished actor, as this will be his first starring role in a scripted comedy series.

Per Netflix, the streamer has officially put in a 10-episode series order for the Ferrell-led series Golf. The series will see Ferrell in the lead role as a fictional golf legend. Ferrell co-created the series with Ramy Youssef and Josh Rabinowitz, and Youssef is also set to be featured with a role in the show. Rabinowitz and Youssef will serve as showrunners, and they are executive producing alongside Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor for Gloria Sanchez Productions; Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue for T-Street; and Andy Campagna for Cairo Cowboy.

McDonald broke the news during an interview with Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan on Friday. “I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this.’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How ’bout that,’ [and] he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.'”

Numero Group is finally giving Majesty Crush their flowers with Butterflies Don’t Go Away, an upcoming double-lp collection commemorating the oft-overlooked shoegazers’ beloved discography.

Majesty Crush formed in Detroit in 1990 and were opening for bands like Mazzy Star and Royal Trux shortly thereafter. After a few smaller releases, including 1992’s Fan EP, the quartet signed with Elektra subsidiary Dali Records. But when Dali folded less than a month after putting out Majesty Crush’s sole LP Love 15, their bright future burned out fast.

Lots of people dream of making a studio movie, but in the midst of their reverie, they don't always take into account just what a grueling process it can be. People work long hours and are expected to be at their sharpest every day so that the project doesn't fall behind schedule or go over budget. From the director on down, the pressure to deliver is immense. So every now and then, a little levity is in order. This occasionally results in on-set pranks, which sometimes get a tad out of control.

Consider the case of 1996's "The Fan." Tony Scott's thriller about a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan (Robert De Niro) who begins stalking his favorite baseball player (Wesley Snipes) was a high-profile production for Sony. The studio poured $55 million into the movie, and hoped it would be a late-summer, adult-skewing smash à la "The Fugitive" or "Unforgiven.

The long, fruitful collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro has produced many great films. However, a deeper look into their work together reveals an interesting point about both men. Seemingly, whenever Marty needs someone to turn your skin inside out, he turns to De Niro. Vice versa, De Niro seemingly only goes for these roles when he works with Marty, save for a few exceptions. The result is a cinematic legacy of stone-cold killers, vengeful convicts, and deranged cab drivers.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.

Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).

The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. ESPN is looking into alleged comments byt college basketball analyst Dan Dakich last week during an argument about monetary compensation — or lack thereof — to collegiate athletes. During the back-and-forth, Dakich went after several academics who disagreed with him, using Twitter and his Indianapolis radio show to do so.

Asked whether Dakich would take part in the network’s broadcasts this week, an ESPN spokesperson told USA Today: “We are taking this matter very seriously and are in the process of looking into it.”

November 19th is shaping up to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t a lot to get excited about. Synapse Films is giving Dario Argento’s Suspiria the 4K treatment this Tuesday, and it looks to be a must-own release for any genre fan. Scream Factory is resurrecting The Fan (1981) on Blu, and for those of you who are into cautionary horror, you’ll definitely want to pick up Arrow Video’s release of Hitch Hike To Hell.

When German filmmaker Eckhart Schmidt’s 1982 romantic shock thriller “The Fan” plays the prestigious Thessaloniki Festival this year, it’s a culmination of the film’s long multi-decade road back from critical disdain and commercial obscurity as well as a sweet vindication for the obstreperous octogenarian film artist and critic.

The Munich-based Schmidt’s iconoclastic career has taken him down a long and winding road from his first feature films in the ’60s, through a long stint as an outspoken film critic and successful television producer, entertainment arts documentarian, Bavarian film funds executive and back again to his first love as narrative filmmaker. In the past few years, he has directed nearly a dozen feature films. He was first noted in Variety in 1967 when his feature film directing debut, “Jet Generation,” was about to premiere in Germany.

When “Jet Generation” premiered, it was the height of the Swinging ‘60s in Europe.

New horror brand Alter, in association with Diga Studios and Pod 3, has teamed up to release a new anthology series called 50 States of Fright which explores the country's urban legends. It turns out that it’s not just fans who John Travolta has a problem with; critics have been pretty hard on him and his latest film “The Fanatic” too.

Travolta is getting panned once again for starring in a horror-thriller from Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst, which is an update on films like “The Fan” and “Misery.” Critics have called Durst’s character development “shallow” and Travolta’s performance as a man who may be borderline autistic everything from over-the-top to “cringe-worthy.”

“Fred Durst’s ‘The Fanatic’ hates fans. It hates actors. It hates tourists, shop owners, and servants. It really, really hates autistic people. And it hates you. It’s a movie that thinks you’re an idiot, someone who won’t see through its shallow provocations, illogical behavior, and vile misanthropy,” Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com wrote. “There’s nothing wrong with making a film about troubled people,...

Write what you know, they say. But because Fred Durst once had a bad experience with a stalker, we now get the rank human patty that is the Limp Bizkit frontman and sometime director’s latest indulgence “The Fanatic,” a celebrity-terrorizing scenario that wants to be “Misery” but only creates misery.

Durst didn’t necessarily embarrass himself 10 years ago when he released his directorial debut, the admirably sensitive college drama “The Education of Charlie Banks”; he didn’t write the film, nor did his effort suggest hidden reserves of cinematic promise. “The Fanatic,” however, which Durst did have a hand in writing, is a brainless, exploitative folly which gives John Travolta free rein to mine the history of cringe-worthy autism portrayals for an offensively garish Frankenstein pantomime of unhinged obsession. It ultimately suggests this side-career of Durst’s should be well and truly snuffed out.

Award-winning casting director Alixe Gordin died at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts on November 28. She was 96. Additional details about her death were not revealed.

Born Alixe Glas on April 10, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio, she took her stage name Gordin when she started performing as a musician and an actor. She got into casting in the ’60s with Studio One and The Defenders on CBS.

Gordin is known for her casting work on some of the most iconic films in history. She served as casting director for the Brian De Palma classic Scarface which earned Al Pacino and Steven Bauer a Golden Globe nomination in 1984. She worked on Alan J. Pakula’s Klute which won Jane Fonda an Academy Award in 1971. She reteamed with Pakula for his film Sophie’s Choice which went on to win an Academy Award for Meryl Streep in 1982. From a haunted house to a doomed romance, Scream Factory has been giving horror fans several reasons to mark their calendars for high-def home media releases this September, including new Blu-rays of The Evil, The Seventh Sign, and The Bride.

One of the leading ladies of Hollywood’s Golden Age died today after a stroke. The sultry, fiery Lauren Bacall was 89. MSNBC’s Thomas Robert broke the news in a tweet, and the Bogart estate has confirmed it. She was famous for starring — onscreeen and off — with Humphrey Bogart in such 1940s classics as The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage and Key Largo. In one of Hollywood’s great love stories, they married in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957. Four years later she married another acting legend, Jason Robards Jr.; they divorced in 1969.

Ellen Barkin has signed on to play the female lead in the boxing drama Hands of Stone.

&#201dgar Ram&#237rez is attached to star as boxing legend Roberto Dur&#225n in the biopic, which follows his rise from the slums of Panama to boxing greatness, and his intense rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard, portrayed by singer/actor Usher Raymond. Robert De Niro plays Roberto Dur&#225n's trainer Ray Arcel, with Ellen Barkin portraying his wife.

Jonathan Jakubowicz (Secuestro Express) is writing and directing the drama. The filmmaker is also producing alongside Jay Weisleder, Carlos Garcia de Paredes and Claudine Jakubowicz. It isn't known when production is slated to begin.

The film marks the third time that Ellen Barkin is starring with Robert De Niro, following This Boy's Life and The Fan. The actress most recently starred in Another Happy Day and the NBC series The New Normal.

This is one "movement" of our exquisite corpse-style critical project, Tony Scott: A Moving Target, which coincidentally begins with a look at Crimson Tide, the same movie that begins the other movement.
