Elsewhere on August 1st, some of the more notable new titles include Before Sunrise and its sequel,...

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. For August 2020 that will almost certainly be Southern Gothic horror series Lovecraft Country. The J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele-produced thriller arrives on August 14 on HBO and HBO Max.
Other strong HBO Max originals arriving in August include the documentary Class Action Park (release date Tbd), Seth Rogen-starring comedy An American Pickle (Aug. 6), and finales for I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Doom Patrol, and Perry Mason.
Of course, HBO Max is designed to house much of WarnerMedia’s content across many mediums. That means some recent movies on note like Jojo Rabbit (Aug. 1), Richard Jewell (Aug. 8), and Birds of Prey (Aug.

Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

Denise Nickerson, best known for playing the snobby, gum-chomping Violet Beauregarde in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, has died following a series of medical issues. The actress’ family confirmed her death in a Facebook post, writing, “She’s gone.” Nickerson was 62.
Nickerson suffered a “major medical emergency” at home on Monday, followed by seizures and both pulmonary and respiratory distress. She was admitted to the intensive unit of a Colorado hospital, where doctors also discovered that she had aspirated and developed pneumonia. She previously endured a severe...

Denise Nickerson, who played the bratty, bloated Violet Beauregarde in 1971’s Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and a sweet-natured orphan bedeviled by ghosts and werewolves on the classic ’60s supernatural soap Dark Shadows, died Wednesday night at a hospital near her home in Colorado. In declining health since suffering a stroke last year, Nickerson was removed from life support by her family earlier that day. She was 62.
Nickerson’s son Josh Nickerson posted news of his mother’s death on Facebook after keeping friends and fans apprised of her health issues. Denise Nickerson was a longtime attendee at fan conventions for both Wonka and Dark Shadows.
“She’s gone,” Nickerson’s family posted on Facebook.
Born in New York City in 1957, Nickerson began acting on shows including The Doctors and Flipper before landing her breakthrough role in 1968 as little Amy Jennings on Dan Curtis’ gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. Teamed with young David Henesy,...

Is Elijah Wood Engaged — and About to Be a Dad? Actor Photographed with Partner Mette-Marie Kongsved
Is Elijah Wood preparing for fatherhood?
The actor, 38, was photographed alongside his partner Mette-Marie Kongsved in Los Angeles on Monday shopping for furniture before visiting a Best Buy store.
Wood kept things casual in jeans, brown shoes and a button-down over a patterned white shirt.
Meanwhile Kongsved — a Danish movie producer — sported a noticeable baby bump under a burnt-orange-colored midi dress, as well as a ring on her left hand.
Usually private when it comes to his personal life, Wood — a former child actor who, aside from his role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, is known for films like North,...

Three decades into her Hollywood career, Heather Graham is making some changes. The long-time actress has always mixed things up in her work. Even as a teenager, she always seemed interested in working with a wide array of directors on some very different projects, playing the object of Corey Haim’s affection in the teen comedy “License to Drive” and turning in an Indie Spirit-nominated supporting turn in Gus Van Sant’s “Drugstore Cowboy” in the space of a year. Her best-known roles also reflect that same spirit, and Graham is just as recognizable for her work in the first “Austin Powers” film as she is for her heartbreaking spin in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”

With It remake director Andy Muschietti coming aboard Sony's long-gestating Robotech adaptation in July, the project has added another key creative addition with Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman) signing on to write the script. This adaptation has been in development for several years, but now it seems it may finally have a shot of making it through production. Still, the studio hasn't set a production start date or even a release date yet, but still it's good news for fans of the franchise who have been waiting years to see this story on the big screen.
Deadline reports that Jason Fuchs will be working with Andy Muschietti to craft a brand new story from scratch, meaning they will discard the drafts written by several different writers over the years. We first reported on this adaptation back in 2008, when Star Wars writer Lawrence Kasdan signed on to write the script. Since then,...

Jimmy Fallon couldn't believe Nick Viall and Elijah Wood are friends, and frankly, neither could we! Really, what are the odds?! The Flipper actor stopped by The Tonight Show Thursday and opened up about his friendship with The Bachelor star. "I've known Nick since before he became the Bachelor but did not know him from The Bachelorette," Wood explained. Their friendship began after Wood and a friend attended Lollapalooza and met up with Nick, who already knew Wood's friend. Nick ultimately moved to Los Angeles, giving the Lord of the Rings actor more face time. "He was just around," Wood said. "I would hang out with him and I kind of knew about his Bachelorette...

Elijah Wood earned his place in movie history as Frodo Baggins, the reluctant hobbit hero of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. But before he vanquished the dark lord Sauron, Wood was the face of a much simpler, yet no less timeless, battle: that between kids and their veggies. Though the blockbuster trilogy catapulted him to international stardom, Wood had already achieved success as a child star in both family films (like 1996’s “Flipper”) and critically acclaimed dramas (Ang Lee’s “The Ice Storm.”) No doubt his star quality was evident from day one, but his frequent presence in commercials also likely helped the young actor catch the industry's eye. In this 1990 commercial, the fittingly baby-faced Wood's earnest enthusiasm and boyish charm are on full display as he helps America’s Dairy Farmers convince kids that broccoli isn’t so bad: all it needs is a bit of cheese.

Long before Warner Bros. set up their DC Comics Extended Universe, which will start to fully take shape with next week's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the studio was developing Lobo, which had many filmmakers come and go but never seemed to get off the ground. Today we have word from The Wrap that the project is back in the works again, with the studio hiring Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs to write the script. This report claims that the writer will start over completely from scratch on the project.
We first reported on Lobo back in 2009, when Guy Ritchie signed on to direct. He ended up leaving the project in 2010, to make Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. After the failures of comic book adaptations such as The Losers and especially Jonah Hex, Lobo was considered a dead project, but in 2012, Brad Peyton came aboard to direct, working...

In 1975, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws made theatergoers scared to swim in the ocean. Two years later, another movie made viewers wary of the sea: the Nazi zombies in Ken Wiederhorn’s Shock Waves. It’s been playing at select theaters ahead of its Blu-ray release and we have details on a special screening of Shock Waves taking place next Monday night at Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Cinema:
“Shock Waves (1977, Ken Wiederhorn, 90 mins)
Monday, November 24, 9:30pm
Price: $16
Nitehawk plunges into the deep end of horror with a screening of a new restoration of the water-logged zombie flick Shock Waves. Director Ken Wiederhorn will be here for a Q&A after the film moderated by Fangoria’s Sam Zimmerman.
Remember that episode of Gilligan’s Island where the crew of the Minnow met up with an old SS scientist who was once in charge of a squad of unstoppable, underwater Nazi zombies?...

It has been such a long time since I sat down to watch Shock Waves that I can barely recall a single image from the film. Thankfully, Blue Underground has my back, as they will be releasing the film to Blu-ray & DVD on November 25th this year. If you aren’t familiar with Blue Underground, or what they do, they are one of the premiere boutique labels that have been a prolific distributor in cult and genre home video releases. I have a pretty large collection of Blue Underground Blu-rays. I think I’m only missing two of their releases, actually. I have the Hell of the Living Dead/Rats double feature sitting on my desk, and I will be tearing through that one tonight. Look for a review of that this week, and be sure and pre-order a copy of Shock Waves for yourself. Check out the press release below for detailed release info.

"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes," it's claimed Andy Warhol once said. Some stars shine much brighter than others, though, and in the case of Hollywood we often see actors hit big early before disappearing without trace.
Brandon Routh, who delivered a sensitive and assured turn as the Man of Steel in 2006's Superman Returns, is one such example. Routh never quite got the breaks he deserved after landing that life-changing role, so it's nice to see him back in the superhero game with an upcoming role as Atom in Arrow.
Digital Spy takes a look back at a handful of stars who couldn't escape their one big role.
Brandon Routh
Plucked from relative obscurity to lead Bryan Singer's lavish Superman sequel, Routh impressively channelled Christopher Reeve on his big screen debut but found leading man roles difficult to come by in the aftermath.

Hugh Jackman is in talks to play the villainous Blackbeard in Warner Bros.' Peter Pan origin story Pan. The studio offered the role to Javier Bardem last month, although he passed on the project.
The story follows young orphan Peter Pan, who is taken to Neverland for the first time, where he becomes a hero to the locals while leading a rebellion against the pirates. Captain Hook will also be featured, although he starts off as an ally to Peter before turning bad. The studio had been looking at Ryan Gosling for the Hook role, although he is not involved in the project. Warner Bros. plans on holding a nationwide casting search for the title character, while also seeking an actress in her mid-20s to play Tiger Lily.
Joe Wright (Anna Karenina) is directing from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (Flipper), with Greg Berlanti producing. No production schedule was given.

This past week, Hanna director Joe Wright signed onto helm Pan, a Peter Pan origin story being set up at Warner Bros. Now comes news that Javier Bardem is in talks to play the lead villain.
The movie will be based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale, which has been retold numerous times on telelvision and at the movies. Flipper remake writer Jason Fuchs is currently drafting the screenplay.
Javier Bardem will not play the most iconic Pan villain Captain Hook, but instead will personify Blackbeard. The story revolves around orphan boy Peter, who is taken for the first time to the magical world of Neverland, where he joins the natives, leading them in a rebellion against a group of evil pirates.
Javier Bardem is no stranger to playing the bad guy, as he has created iconic villains for No Country for Old Men and James Bond's Skyfall. This will...

This week's gonzo teen nightmare Spring Breakers is trumpeting the fact that two of its leads - Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez - traditionally play "good girls". But the whole "teen idol gone bad" strategy is a longstanding Hollywood tradition aimed to help transition pigeonholed teen stars into "serious" actors.
Here are a few fellas who tried the tactic, to varying degrees of success.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas in Speedway Junky
The squeaky-clean kid from Home Improvement took a step toward tarnishing his image by playing an evil, bisexual hooker in this gritty drama, giving a whole new meaning to "Tool Time"!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Mysterious Skin
Jgl also went the hustler route for his breakout from small-screen teen stardom - only the 3rd Rock star went "the full gay" in this unsettling and excellent indie drama.
Lukas Haas in Johns
Yet another teen heartthrob caught a case of gay hustleritis...

Remakes seem to be the norm these days, and when you think about it, the early days of cinema had many different versions of the same thing. Take Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde for example, there are so many different film versions from the early days, with different studio’s and countries giving that adaptation a try. So why is it that remakes seems to annoy so many of us now? Mostly I think in the Hollywood system they just seem to be cash grabs, so many are just generic films and it feels like the idea’s have run out.
There are remakes out there however that do it right, take 80’s classics like The Thing and The Fly, those are fantastic remakes. They pay homage to the original, give it a fresh twist and are overall just great films. Now in the 00’s...

“Does anyone have any questions about Flipper?” Front and center, Mondo chief Justin Ishmael isn’t fooling anyone. Next to him is Elijah Wood, the star of the 1996 Alan Shapiro-directed Paul Hogan vehicle Flipper. But we know this can’t be Flipper. Not for the highly anticipated tenth Mondo Mystery Movie, a series that has spanned across shows in Austin and Los Angeles, each better than the last and each packaged with an amazing work of art that attendees have the exclusive opportunity to purchase. Even though Justin and Elijah insist that we’re all about to watch Flipper, this crowd of true believers — a crowd that, when asked who was in attendance for the last Mystery Movie, saw about 80% of hands raised — was having absolutely none of it. “So you guys are just going to shit on this event?” said Ishmael in a faux tiff. “Okay then, lets roll the movie.” And...

The last time we did the Mondo Mystery Movie dance, it was October of 2011. For that event, the good folks at Mondo/the Alamo Drafthouse arranged for a dozen charter busses’ worth of film geeks and poster fans to be ferried (via police escort) across Austin to a nearly-abandoned mall swarming with “zombies”, at which time we were all shown an extremely special screening of George Romero’s Dawn of The Dead. Nine months later, the Mondo Mystery Movie returned to Austin, and—as you might’ve already heard—the results were fantastic. Read on for my report from Mondo Mystery Movie 10, my fellow limited paper enthusiasts. Last night, if you’d wandered into theater two at the South Lamar Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, here’s what you would’ve seen: Elijah Wood, staring back at a sold-out crowd of films geeks and poster nerds (all of whom—it...

When you think back to Elijah Wood's part in Robert Rodriguez's Sin City it's a lot easier to imagine him as a psychotic, blood-thirsty, cannibalistic killer and not just that kid from Flipper and Frodo from The Lord of the Rings. He has played other unstable characters since, most notably in the FX series Wilfred, but now he's back to doing it on the big screen as the lead in Franck Khalfoun's remake of William Lustig's Maniac. The horror film will be playing at the Cannes Film Festival this week and Twitch has gotten their hands on what appears to be a sales trailer. I should mention that this video is not for work or for the kids as it is chock full of blood, nudity and violence. You've been warned! Written by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur, Maniac is about a young man named Frank...
