LeBron James is hoping that his experience with racism will be a lesson to others.
An official with the Lapd confirms to Et that the N-word was spray-painted across the gate of James' private home on Wednesday morning. During a press conference ahead of the NBA Finals in Oakland, California, on Wednesday, the basketball player opened up about the incident, revealing that he hopes it "sheds a light" on the ongoing existence of racism in America.

After a successful first weekend at the box office, The Boss Baby, an animated comedy from DreamWorks Animation, had no trouble repeating at the box office. The hit movie went up against Warner Bros.' comedy remake Going in Style, Sony's animated adventure Smurfs: The Lost Village and PureFlix's faith-based drama The Case For Christ. None of these new releases stood a chance, with The Boss Baby repeating atop the box office with $26.3 million, followed closely by Disney's blockbuster Beauty and the Beast with $25 million.
Box Office Mojo reports that Smurfs: The Lost Village, Sony's new fully animated movie in the beloved franchise, opened in 3,610 theaters, debuting in third place with $14 million for a meager $3,882 per-screen average. Going in Style debuted in 3,061 theaters in fourth place with $12.5 million with a $4,084 per-screen average, while The Case for Christ opened in 10th place with $3.9 million. Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark
After a couple impressive March weekends with one new box office record, and a couple impressive openings, we’re now into April, and of the new movies, there just doesn’t seem like anything can defeat last week’s powerful duo of DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby--which exceeded all predictions with $49 million, taking the top spot from Beauty and the Beast. Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

“The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) and “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) should take the top slots this early spring weekend, but the DreamWorks Animation comedy isn’t guaranteed to hold on to number one.
We’re in the middle of staggered school spring vacation season, so family-oriented films abound. That explains Sony’s release of “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” which looks to do best among the three new wide releases. However, “Going in Style” (Warner Bros.) and “The Case for Christ” (PureFlix) are less predictable with their respective older and faith-based core audiences.

This looks like another weekend that will outpace last year’s, when the top 10 grossed $91 million; expect this one to reach at least $100 million.

Traditionally, April has never been one of the biggest months to open a movie, but that all changed a few years ago when the Fast & Furious franchise started finding success in the spring months. The next installment in that high-octane franchise, The Fate of the Furious, doesn't hit theaters until April 14, but this weekend, moviegoers will have three new films arriving in wide release, Sony's animated adventure Smurfs: The Lost Village, Warner Bros.' comedy remake Going In Style and PureFlix's The Case For Christ. None of these will (probably) be able to stop last weekend's winner, The Boss Baby, which will likely repeat atop the box office with $25.2 million.
Box Office Mojo reports that Smurfs: The Lost Village, which marks the franchise's return to fully animated movies, instead of live-action/CGI hybrids, is expected to open in roughly 3,400 theaters, with Going in Style estimated to open in 3,000 theaters, while...

It's almost impossible to perfectly predict the weekend box office grosses, and more often than not, some movies manage to come in either far above, or far below expectations. A few days ago, we predicted that the animated comedy The Boss Baby would have a solid weekend with just over $20 million, but this animated comedy managed to far exceed expectations, dethroning two-time winner Beauty and the Beast and taking the box office crown with $49 million. This came in just above Beauty and the Beast's third weekend tally of $47.5 million, bringing its domestic take to $395.4 million, with $876.2 million worldwide, inching closer and closer to the $1 billion mark.
Box Office Mojo reports that The Boss Baby earned an impressive $12,987 per-screen average from 3,773 theaters while the Ghost in the Shell adaptation debuted in 3,440 theaters, taking third place with $19 million with a decent $5,523 per-screen average. While predicting box office grosses week in and week out is certainly not an exact science, some movies' blockbuster potential is much easier to identify than others. Hardly anyone was surprised that Beauty and the Beast debuted far above industry expectations, earning a record-breaking $174.7 million in its opening weekend, while dropping just 48.3% last weekend, to again easily win with $90.4 million. This weekend, the live-action fairy tale adaptation faces its biggest challenge yet, going up against DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby and Paramount's live-action manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell. Unless either of these two new releases overperforms in a big way, they shouldn't stop Beauty and the Beast from winning for a third weekend in a row, with a predicted $43.1 million.
Box Office Mojo reports that The Boss Baby is expected to debut in roughly 3,700 theaters, while the Ghost in the Shell adaptation is slated to debut in roughly 3,200 theaters.

Screen Media Films has released the first trailer for The Void, which is slated to hit theaters in limited released and arrive on VOD platforms April 7. This terrifying thriller has been winning rave reviews from hitting the festival circuit, after making its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas back in September. If this new footage is any indication, which features some of the critical praise from the festivals, fans of 80s horror films will be in for one hell of a ride.

The Originals delivers another fascinating flashback episode this week, one that provides an insight into Klaus' psychology...
This review contains spoilers.
2.3 Every Mother's Son
Flashback episodes of The Originals are always a heck of a lot more interesting than flashback episodes of any other show. There are various reasons for this, but chief among them is the fact that the flashbacks always have the same thematic throughline as the modern-day action, without it ever being forced – this show is about a supremely, mythically dysfunctional family, and the flashbacks are there to demonstrate that it's always been that way, vampirism and magic aside.
Every Mother's Son was one such episode and, after focusing on Kol (strangely absent here) and his role in the Mikaelson clan last week, it's now the turn of Esther and Finn. That 'always and forever' mantra crops up again, this time from the family matriarch (played by original actress,...

The Originals stirs more vampires into the mix this week, and is all the better for it. Here's Caroline's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.2 Alive And Kicking
I always hated Kol. On a show (The Vampire Diaries that is) full of characters I either absolutely adore or violently dislike, Kol was definitely in the latter category. But that was then. Now? Call me fickle but Kol might be one of favourite characters on The Originals.
That’s good, too, since the littlest Original looks set to play a huge part in season two. This episode was basically all about re-introducing him to new viewers and, despite some little anomalies I’m sure existing Kol fans will be able to point out, it did a good job of pitching him to sceptical people like me.
Of course, I was already much more on board with the character after discovering he’s...

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 2, “Alive and Kicking”
Written by Michelle Paradise and Michael Narducci
Directed by Jeffrey Hunt
Airs Mondays at 8pm on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Marcel and Elijah search for the white oak stake, Klaus helps Hayley combat her savage side, Kaleb treats Davina to a violent dinner, and Mikael attempts to escape.
The Originals is so much more fun with the whole family around. Despite being named after the first vampire family, The Originals began with only half of it’s namesake present; of course, the majority of them were dead. But, it’s a good thing the show found a way around this minor problem, because no other family on earth is capable of creating the same level of drama as the titular Mikaelson’s.
Unfortunately, The Originals chose to bring Mikaelson mama Esther back in the form of a small and thoroughly non-threatening teenage woman.

I remember not long after it was released, one of my friends bought me Dark Souls for my birthday. It wasn’t a game I’d heard very much about, and so was intrigued as to how good a game I’d been given. No more than an hour into the game I was starting to think I was the victim of some cruel joke my friend had played, and yet, something about Dark Souls kept me going back to it. From Software had created a game so unforgiving it was infuriating, and yet it was never unfair, and it is for that reason, when I was given the opportunity to review Dark Souls II I jumped at the chance.
I always like to keep an open mind when I play a game, since no game is the same as its predecessors. Sequels I find tend to be a bit...

The big story
Richard Curtis – the hugely successful writer and director behind Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and Love Actually is considering retirement.
"This probably will be the last film I will direct," he told Empire magazine in an interview discussing his latest release, About Time. The film features Domhnall Gleeson travelling through time in a bid to change his past and have a better future – and its plot lead our writer to question why it's almost always men who get to be cinematic time travellers, and so rarely women.
Curtis wasn't the only big name hinting at retirement this week – Johnny Depp is considering quitting acting in the near future, he told the BBC – although, if this poll of Guardian readers is anything to go by, film fans would be sorry to see him go.

Just a few months ago Dread Central was invited on a visit to the set of James Wan's highly anticipated sequel Insidious Chapter 2, which was using the super creepy (and most likely haunted) Linda Vista Hospital in Los Angeles as its primary shooting location.
During our set visit we had the opportunity to tour Linda Vista, which is not only being used for a hospital setting but is also being utilized as a soundstage of sorts, with sets being constructed inside the hospital that incorporate locations we first saw in Insidious (more on that soon). As someone who has been lucky enough to tour Linda Vista for several other productions, it seemed like an unusual choice to build an entire living room or bedroom inside the hospital, but in reality it was a decision that was demonstrative of the production's indie roots, which chose to go the creative route for their flashback scenes.

Gerard Alessandrini's, Forbidden Broadway Alive And Kicking, which received unanimous raves from critics and audiences alike, broke all box-office records at the 47th Street Theatre, and won spots on the Top Ten Lists of Time Magazine and the Associated Press, will wind up its current edition at the 47th Street Theatre on Sunday, April 28, in order to make room for The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre's own season, as required by the show's lease agreement with the theatre. In a statement, Mr. Alessandrini said, We knew from the start that the theatre could only be ours until the end of April. Although we hate to leave town when we're a hit, I actually think this is a perfect time for us to wind up Alive and Kicking, which has been a thrilling return to New York for us, to take a brief break and to begin plans to return with another edition later this year.

Ross Lincoln is a Deadline contributor. The recent war of words between the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the union representing caregivers employed at the fund’s various facilities has somewhat obscured what the Mptf actually does. In a slick PR move that also shines a light on the fund’s mission, the Mptf has launched a new documentary web series, Alive And Kicking, which follows Tony Lawrence and Larry Kelem, two residents living in the Mptf retirement facility in Woodland Hills, as they collaborate on an original musical. Lawrence is a writer whose credits include the original Hawaii Five-0 and The Twilight Zone. Kelem, who died December 18, 2012 at 91, was a music composer and arranger, agent, and manager. The eleven-episode series of shorts is available Wednesdays and Thursdays through March 21. The Motion Picture & Television Fund and members of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (Seiu-uhw) are currently embroiled...

Today, we're featuring Carl Reiner and his wife Estelle Reiner in 1984. Reiner performed in several Broadway musicals, including Inside U.S.A., and Alive and Kicking, and had the lead role in Call Me Mister. In 1950, he was cast by producer Max Leibman in Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows, appearing on air in skits while also working alongside writers such as Mel Brooks and Neil Simon. Reiner began his directing career on the Van Dyke show. After that show ended its run, Reiner's first film feature was an adaptation of Joseph Stein's play Enter Laughing 1967, which in turn was based on Reiner's semi-autobiographical 1958 novel of the same name. Probably the best-known films of his early directing career were the cult comedy Where's Poppa 1970, starring George Segal and Ruth Gordon, Oh, God 1977 with George Burns and The Jerk 1979 with Steve Martin.

Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking To the strains of "Brink of Doom" (à la Brigadoon), the parody institution Forbidden Broadway — skewering the Great White Way for 30 years now — reemerges after a three-year hiatus. And just in nick of time: Dear God, there are Singing Newsboys and faux-Czech pixie goddesses running amok (and unmocked) in the theater district! This must not go unanswered!Creator, co-director, and lyrical savant Gerard Alessandrini marshals a flawless quartet of singing, dancing impressionistas (Natalie Charlé Ellis, Scott Richard Foster, Jenny Lee Stern, and Marcus Stevens, with David Caldwell on piano) with another passionate attack on high-priced, low-inspiration commercial theater. He warms up a few leftovers (his old Disney-baiting "Circle of Mice," a slightly stale Jersey Boys sequence), but the fresh stuff is fresh indeed. "S'Wonder Bread! S'mayonnaise!" sings Nice Work's Matthew Broderick, "When I try to dance!" (A brilliantly leadfooted, fast-collapsing soft-shoe ensues.) "Take my cramping...

2009 saw the reformation of Mr Big and the hard rock world went crazy. A few shows around the world led up to the release of ‘Back to Budokan’ CD and DVD and many thought that was it…
Not so. As Eric Martin said to a buzzing crowd at Newcastle’s O2 Academy, “Mr Big is back baby!” And goodness me: back they most certainly are!
The band was formed in 1988 by former David Lee Roth bass player Billy Sheehan, who then subsequently recruited guitarist Paul Gilbert, singer Eric Martin and drummer Pat Torpay before unleashing their technical genius on an unsuspecting world. They forged their trademark sound through heavy hard-rocking riffs, soulfull power ballads and colourful vocal harmonies, all held together with unbelievable technical ability. Nobody in the universe plays bass like Billy Sheehan and as for Gilbert… well, is there anyone better? It’s certainly not as easy a...

How come the big Us animators don't see the need for heroines to lead their films, when Japan's Studio Ghibli has shown you don't need a male protagonist to make a film that's both commercially and artistically successful? That was the question posed last week by Steve Rose.
That Hollywood is aware of the issue was a point made by andyos: "I interviewed Pete Docter (director of Monsters Inc and Up) for a magazine article, and brought up the gender issue. Docter had no hesitation in agreeing it was an issue: 'We've tried at times to write more female characters, but it's very difficult. We're not as familiar with them, and you feel as though they're under intense scrutiny (from the audience). It's very easy for us to make male characters have foibles, but with females, it's sometimes more delicate.

The comic book legacy and following in the footsteps (sort of) of Sir Patrick Stewart
“I was really aware of the cartoon when I was growing up. When I was about 12 years old they started showing it on Alive and Kicking, I think, and I would do that thing of watching the first half of the cartoon and then they’d make you wait an hour and 15 minutes before they showed you the second half of the cartoon, which is really unfair.
