Love it or hate it, nobody who wants to participate in pop culture can ignore the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the internet and the streaming boom continue to divide the entertainment industry into smaller niche fragments, superhero tentpole movies are the closest thing we still have to a monoculture. That cultural dominance has allowed Marvel Studios to rope an increasingly large percentage of Hollywood’s A-list actors (and quite a few of its best directors) into its ever-expanding universe.
Years of billion dollar box office receipts and endless discourse about its stranglehold on the film industry make it easy to forget what a risky proposition the MCU was when it launched with “Iron Man” in 2008. Superhero movies without Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man were considered box office gambles at the time, and many entertainment industry observers doubted that audiences would continue to show up for so...

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) director Doug Liman will be collaborating with Tom Cruise once again on the new supernatural thriller called Deeper. Per Showbiz 411, Liman confirmed the plans at a screening of the Gregory Kershaw, Michael Dweck documentary Gaucho Gaucho.
Liman said he and the Mission: Impossible star, with whom he also worked together on 2017’s American Made, are planning to work on the movie soon. “I have never done one, and neither has Tom Cruise,” Liman said of working on the "scary" movie.
I have never done one, and neither has Tom Cruise.
In addition to Edge of Tomorrow, which Liman produced, he also produced 2010’s Fair Game, which starred Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, and was an executive producer on the popular TV series, Suits. He also directed 1996’s Swingers, starring Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, as well as 2024’s Road House, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal. No production date for Deeper has been announced.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of cameos; heck, the whole thing is practically built on them. For that matter, it's gotten to the point where we both expect the McU's movies to feature surprising cameos (and we complain when they don't) yet also deeply dislike the endless parade of cameos in new Marvel projects.
And yet, these types of cameos are essentially as old as TV itself, particularly when it comes to the sitcom (a staple of American television and the foundation upon which so much of the medium is built). These long-lasting shows, most of which only focus on a few main characters, offer endless opportunities for a string of characters to make one-off appearances. Really, the sitcom is built for cameos; it's a way for big celebrities to promote themselves, earn a quick paycheck, or even just get a start on the industry before becoming huge. It's...

Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn became household names when they joined forces for the celebrated 1996 comedy hit Swingers, in which the dynamic duo star as two Los Angeles pals who are struggling to make it in the entertainment industry and chase their Hollywood dreams while also navigating the world of romance and women. Vaughn knocked it out of the park as the womanizing Trent Walker, with the decorated actor serving up a heaping dose of charm, wit, and humor in the unforgettable role.
Swingers went on to become a massive critical and financial triumph, emerging as one of the decade's most profitable independent flicks while also putting its talented cast and crew on the map. Nearly thirty years later, fans of the beloved movie still hold the sidesplitting comedy in high regard, with many hoping that a long-desired sequel would get made as a result of its dazzling success. Heather Graham is getting back to the director's chair with Chosen Family. In front of the camera, Graham's career has seen her star in everything from Jon Favreau's buddy comedy Swingers to David Lynch and Mark Frost's beloved mystery show Twin Peaks, The Hangover trilogy and, more recently, in the latest adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand and H.P. Lovecraft-based Suitable Flesh. Behind the camera, Graham made her directorial debut with the 2018 comedy Half Magic, which garnered generally positive reviews from critics.
With Chosen Family, Graham not only is back in the director's chair and writing the script for the romantic comedy, but also stars as Ann, a yoga instructor looking to break free from her string of bad relationships. This leads to her dating Steve, a single father working as a contractor for her restauranteur friend. Their relationship gets off to a strong start, but...

[This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Bad Monkey.]
Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Fox (in his final role before disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis) as the astute deputy mayor of New York City.
Over the years, as their paths continued to cross at social events, Vaughn and Lawrence would keep tabs on each other’s progress. Vaughn became one of the most bankable stars of R-rated comedies in the late ’90s and 2000s, headlining box-office hits such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Dodgeball. Glen Powell has been making all the right movie moves lately, securing big box office wins with his turns in Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters. He's also been partially credited with reviving romcoms in theaters thanks to the success of Anyone But You, and he's continued to hone his chops alongside veteran filmmaker Richard Linklater in movies like Everybody Wants Some!! and Netflixs Hit Man. Add to all this an affinity for the audio drama, and you have a recipe for a true all-rounder.
His latest Audible Original is The Best Man's Ghostwriter, a comedic take on the real-life occupation once practiced by director Matthew Starr. Tom Cruise's innovative sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow perfectly captures what it feels like to respawn in a video game. Edge of Tomorrow is highly inventive, relying on a familiar movie premise seen in Groundhog Day in which the protagonist essentially wakes up on the same day over and over. In the case of Cruise's protagonist William Cage, he is forced to fight in a seemingly unwinnable war against an alien invasion, resulting in him starting each day from square one after dying, typically in combat.
Directed by Doug Liman and co-written by Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, Edge of Tomorrow combines action, sci-fi, and comedy to create a one-of-a-kind and highly entertaining viewing experience. Edge of Tomorrow has the highest critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes out of any Tom Cruise sci-fi movie. Critics praise Edge of Tomorrow for being highly original, concept-driven, and unexpectedly smart.

Who’s to blame for the death of the R-rated movie comedy?
Vince Vaughn pointed a habañero-stained finger at scaredy-cat entertainment executives when he appeared on Hot Ones earlier this month. “They just overthink it,” he said between bites of earthy, peppery wings. “The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great. They want to follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone that don’t really translate. But as long as they follow them, they’re not going to lose their job because they can say, ‘Well look, I crunched the numbers.’”
Movie comedy wasn’t like that when Vaughn was a young’n. “I remember when we first shot (Wedding) Crashers, we were going super (R-rated), and we would do stuff and it was fun because we were almost making a movie for ourselves...

Vince Vaughn knows who he is by now. He excels at playing the motormouthed scamp, a role he’s perfected over the past three decades in big-screen comedies like Swingers and Wedding Crashers. He’s back in his wheelhouse here, and in fine form, as the star of the new Apple TV+ mystery comedy Bad Monkey, premiering this Wednesday. (I’ve seen the first three episodes.) As the star of everything from “Swingers” to “Brawl in Cell Block 99,” “Wedding Crashers” to “Freaky,” Vince Vaughn has made an impression on moviegoers that looms even larger than his 6’5” frame. Be it comedy or horror, on the big screen or small, his performances often feel oversized but always exude a lived-in authenticity, which is why so many of them have endured as stand-outs and staples of the genres he’s explored. And yet, when facing an honor commensurate with his impact on the entertainment industry, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Vaughn reacts a bit more like a shrinking violet than you might expect.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. That was certainly the case for director Doug Liman, who needed to film a quick scene for a movie and accidentally created an entirely new trend of movie aesthetics. The "shaky cam" technique is used in a number of films today, particularly "found footage" films, but its use was popularized by Matt Damon's Jason Bourne films and from one scene in particular from the first film.
In an interview with IGN, while discussing his favorite scenes from his biggest movies, Liman points to a brief scene in his 2002 film The Bourne Identity for pioneering the "shaky cam" aesthetic. The movie is considered a classic modern action film because of its unique style, typified by one scene in particular. The scene, which occurs about 49 minutes into the movie, is brief and involves Matt Damon's Bourne entering the Gare du Nord train station...

The Bourne trilogy popularized the shaky cam aesthetic that has since been expediently used to film action scenes. Director Doug Liman said he used the technique out of necessity to covertly film a quick scene in The Bourne Identity.
Director Doug Liman recalled stealing shots to complete a short sequence with Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity. Liman told IGN that his background in independent cinema nurtured his knack for avant-garde filmmaking, something he used to great effect even in blockbuster projects like Mr. & Mrs Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, and American Made. He also resorted to a practical filming technique in his first (and only) entry to the Bourne film franchise; The Bourne Identity featured a relatively nondescript scene covertly shot with a handheld camera, resulting in a shaky aesthetic that director Paul Greengrass popularized in subsequent Bourne films.

"They just don't make 'em like they used to," said every movie fan ever. But Vince Vaughn knows why. Nostalgia for older movies has always been a powerful force affecting cinephiles, but the growth of social media has seen that effect increase tenfold. Sites like Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube are filled with disgruntled moviegoers complaining about the lack of original storytelling in Hollywood. While audiences usually attribute this effect to Hollywood's status as a money-making machine, according to Vaughn, that isn't the whole truth.

Vince Vaughn believes Hollywood execs are too cautious nowadays when it comes to financing the type of R-rated comedies that launched his career.

Vince Vaughn is convinced studios want to “overthink” comedies nowadays, especially ones without an IP to fall back on.
The actor — who has appeared in iconic original films such as “Wedding Crashers,” “Old School,” and “Swingers” — explained why there is a lack of modern R-rated comedies in theaters.
“[Studios] just overthink it,” Vaughn said during First We Feast’s “Hot Ones” series. “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.'”
He continued, “The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone,...

Vince Vaughn was once one of Hollywood's go-to actors for the R-rated comedy genre, appearing in classics like Wedding Crashers, Old School, and Swingers. Speaking with Sean Evans on Hot Ones, the actor offered his thoughts on why Hollywood has shifted away from making R-rated comedies.
Appearing on Hot Ones (via Deadline) to promote his Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey, Vaughn explained that Hollywood is an industry that favors IPs over original ideas. "They just overthink it," he said. "And its like, its crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, 'You have to have an IP.'"

Vince Vaughn made his Hollywood bones in R-rated comedies like Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers.
He had a hot take on why they’re no longer making them like that on the Hot Ones podcast.
“They just overthink it,” Vaughn told host Sean Evans “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. Vaughn used the board game Battleship as a meaningless IP example, saying it became a “vehicle for storytelling” just because it had a recognizable name.
However, when he got his start in Hollywood, real life experiences were the stock.

Vince Vaughn feels Hollywood executives “overthink it” when it comes to developing the types of R-rated comedies the actor is famously known for.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm actor, who rose to fame in the late ’90s and early 2000s with his hard R-rated movies such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers, recently shared on Hot Ones his thoughts on those films not being made in this day and age.

The Instigators is a new film from Doug Liman, a director who burst onto the scene with the Sundance-rejected indie hit Swingers and the criminally underseen but ultra-cool Go. Yet, somehow, Liman transitioned from cult comedies to big-action Hollywood blockbusters with the first two films in The Bourne franchise and the film that made Jennifer Aniston a divorcee, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
In addition to critically approved films like American Made and Fair Game, Liman has a filmography stacked with critical and box office disappointments. Real stinkers include the stagnant Chaos Walking, the forgettably campy Road House, the underwhelming Jumper, the obligatory Three Musketeers, and the streaming film Locked Down, which had many rooting for a Covid-19 victory.
Unfortunately, things will not improve with The Instigators, mainly because of a thoughtless and inattentive script that never bothers to sweat the details.

Like Doug Liman’s recent Amazon remake of Road House, his latest streaming effort The Instigators quite frankly misses its calling. Both films should have had wide theatrical runs before hitting the services. They are the kinds of films that are fun to watch with a crowd.
Nevertheless, other than a nominal week in limited release, The Instigators will hit Apple TV+’s home audience on August 9. Still, I have to say Apple has turned out a number of streaming attractions that are a cut above, and this is yet another example. With a grade-a cast led by Matt Damon (who is also a producer with partner Ben Affleck) and Casey Affleck (who co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean), this is pure, often riotously funny summer entertainment, a perfect blend of genres from action to comedy to crime, not a minute of it to be taken seriously.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House 2 receives a cautious update from director Doug Liman, with mixed feelings about sequels. The remake, starring Gyllenhaal as Elwood Dalton, garnered mixed reviews but attracted millions of viewers worldwide. Liman remains undecided about directing Road House 2, despite Gyllenhaal's enthusiasm for reprising his role.
Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House 2 receives a cautious update from director Doug Liman, though he would "hate to leave him hanging." A remake of 1989's Road House, the new film follows an ex-UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse and discovers the apparent paradise is not at all what it seems. Other than Gyllenhaal in the lead role as Elwood Dalton, the Road House remake's cast includes Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, J.D. Pardo, Post Malone, and Conor McGregor.

There are a lot of ways one can look at Apple TV+’s upcoming Matt Damon and Casey Affleck two-hander “The Instigators.” From one angle, it’s a heist film, another, a buddy comedy. As it picks up, it becomes both an ensemble crime piece and a political satire before ultimately descending into an action caper replete with car chases, shootouts, and multiple buildings being blown up. There’s even a touch of human tragedy as Damon and Affleck’s characters Rory and Cobby carry with them ineptitude, but also a desperate desire to move forward. For many directors, this would seem like a lot to take on, but for Doug Liman, it was just another day at the office.

Director Matthew Mishory and producer-financier Bradford L. Schlei have acquired rights to the L.A.-set punk novel “What We Do Is Secret” by Thorn Kief Hillsberry.
Mishory, director of “Mosolov’s Suitcase” and “Fioretta,” will direct the film adaptation, which will enter development immediately, and produce with Schlei through their Rubber Ring Films. Schlei’s credits include “Swingers,” “Spun” and “Some Folks Call It a Slingblade.” Author and screenwriter Tony O’Neill will adapt the book.
The film adaptation will have a different title than the book, since there was already a 2007 film named “What We Do Is Secret,” which starred Shane West as Darby Crash of the Germs.

Edge of Tomorrow premiered in 2014, and a talk about a sequel has been going on ever since. As Edge of Tomorrow 2 continues to gain momentum, director Doug Liman has just shared a hopeful update.
Speaking to Empire to promote his latest film, The Instigators, Liman also addressed Edge of Tomorrow's future. The sci-fi film followed Tom Cruise's Major William Cage, a soldier who finds himself in a time loop, relieving the day of an alien attack until he finds a way to beat the forces that threatened the planet. The film had an underwhelming response at the box office, but found new life after its premiere, quickly becoming one of Tom Cruise's best movies.

Tom Cruise is an extraordinarily busy man. When he’s not defying death on the set of a Mission: Impossible movie, lighting up the red carpet, or making deals to help reinvigorate the theater-going experience, you can find him watching movies with Doug Liman. I’m not kidding. According to Liman, he and Cruise watched their collaborative film Edge of Tomorrow together and are still discussing making a sequel.
Speaking with Empire magazine, Liman told the outlet, “No, we keep talking about it,” when asked if an Edge of Tomorrow sequel is in the cards. “We love that world,” Liman added, “Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn’t seen it in 10 years,” Liman said. “I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.'”

After 10 years of waiting, “Edge of Tomorrow 2” may finally be closer to a greenlight.
Director Doug Liman confirmed to Empire magazine that Tom Cruise is still determined to get an “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel made. The film starred Cruise as an army general who, paired with Emily Blunt’s captain, battles an alien invasion. The duo continuously travel 24 hours back in time until they can defeat the extraterrestrials. The Liman-directed 2014 feature was written by Christopher McQuarrie, who went on to direct Cruise in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
An “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel was formally announced in 2016 with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse cowriting. The project resurfaced in 2019 with “The Invention of Lying” co-writer Matthew Robinson handling the script, titled “Live Die Repeat and Repeat,” and Liman directing; however, it, too, was never made.
Liman assured fans that despite the stops and starts, “Edge of Tomorrow 2” will hopefully still happen.

Drew Carey was able to collect his well-deserved attaboys Sunday at the Writers Guild Awards, where he told the crowd that he covered the bills at Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers for striking scribes last summer because “it’s the right thing to do.”
With a plate full of food in hand, the host of The Price is Right took the stage at the Hollywood Palladium to explain why he insisted on paying for so many meals — though he did acknowledge a brief period of shock and awe when the bills started arriving.

Road House is currently streaming on Prime Video, but the film’s director, Doug Liman, wishes audiences were watching it in theaters. According to the acclaimed filmmaker, Amazon is “giving audiences the shaft” by not hosting the film on the silver screen, and he feels as if he’s lost a public battle for the project’s worth. In a video posted by Casey Neistat, the notable YouTube sensation gets Liman’s uncensored version of the story and chronicles the director’s trip to the Road House premiere, which, adding insult to injury, takes place in a packed theater.
When Neistat and Liman meet in the room where the sound for Road House was mixed, it becomes apparent that Liman designed the film for theaters. Different studio spaces represent different mixing environments. If a movie will stream in living rooms, sound engineers mix the audio in a smaller space to replicate living room environments.

Billy Magnussen always understands the assignment. Whatever the medium or genre, the actor manages to stand out with an impressive range. He has literally played a Disney prince — twice! — in the film versions of “Into the Woods” and “Aladdin.” He earned a Tony nomination for his role as a dimwitted young lover in “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” and has stood out in ensemble films like “Game Night” and “The Big Short.”
But Magnussen also excels at playing the bad guy, such as the tech billionaire who installs a tracking device in his ex-wife in “Made for Love” to a Nazi officer in “The Survivor.” But never more deliciously than in “Road House,” a reimaging of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic. The new version, hitting Amazon Prime Video this week, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a roadhouse in the Florida Keys.

Jon Favreau has one of the most interesting career arcs of any filmmaker working today. Favreau began his career as a charismatic, snarky comedic actor, making appearances in shows like The Sopranos and Friends. While he was always an engaging presence in front of the camera, Favreau proved to be a very talented screenwriter after penning the hit comedy Swingers. In the years that followed, Favreau became a massively successful comedy filmmaker who transitioned into action filmmaking.

Early on in Doug Liman's Road House remake, our hero, Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), makes his way to Glass Key, Florida, where he's just been hired as a cooler to remove the bad element that's been harassing the staff and patrons of the Road House bar. Deboarding a bus, Dalton immediately encounters a young girl, who, upon hearing of Dalton's new gig, remarks, "That kind of sounds like the plot to a Western." Later, as more plot elements come into play, the same girl will refer to the plot as a "mystery noir." If you can't already tell, this isn't a film that will require any heavy lifting from its audience.
We first meet Dalton, hooded and shoegazing, like a penitent monk, as he enters an all-comers, bare-knuckle ring. A tatted fighter, played by Post Malone (credited as Austin Post), has just beaten a man twice his size to...

“Road House” is an infectiously stylish piece of slumming. It’s a remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze cheeseball action cult film, and it’s staged with a verve and wit and dynamic grittiness that make the original film look even more rickety than it once did. Doug Liman, the director of the new “Road House,” has always been a gifted maverick, but I still like his earliest films the best. For years now, he has worked hard to make interesting and responsible dramas, but watching “Road House” you can taste how good it must have felt for him to be irresponsible — to give in to his savage B-movie id.
The action in “Road House” is beyond brutal; at moments, it’s vicious. Yet if the movie is far more violent than your average action film, in its slightly crackpot bare-knuckle way it’s also more humane. Liman stages the pulp...

South by Southwest is a festival like none other. Spread across the bustling streets of Downtown Austin, the convergence event truly has something for everyone.
South by Southwest, better known as SxSw, is a tech conference meets music festival meets film festival. With hundreds of films, bands, startups, and established brands all over the city, the energy is unrivaled.
This year is no different as thousands prepare to arrive at the Texas capitol this week.
I will be lucky enough to attend this year’s festival for a whole week and the film lineup is one of the strongest in years. SxSw is a great combination of established, anticipated films mixed with independent films with massive potential to be the next big thing.
In the past some of the competition films that have premiered at the festival have been Short Term 12, Peanut Butter Falcon, Tiny Furniture. Krisha, and more.

Cooper reflects on the significant impact working with Vaughn had on his own career, citing Vaughn's willingness to fail as an inspiration. Vince Vaughn has been offered Super Bowl commercials in the past, but he finally said yes when he got the chance to work alongside sports greats Tom Brady and Wayne Gretzky in an ad this year for gambling app BetMGM.
The spot features Vaughn explaining that anyone could use BetMGM except the retired NFL star because he’s already “won enough.” The “Wedding Crashers” star is also shown having dinner with ice hockey legend Gretzky.
Vaughn rarely does commercials. “I’ve been offered Super Bowl ads in the past…but this just really made sense,” Vaughn told me Tuesday at the final season premiere of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “I love Las Vegas, obviously, and MGM. That felt like a good fit. Tom and Wayne are great, so it just felt fun.”
Vaughn continued, “Tom is super easy and he’s funny, same with Wayne. They were easy to be around.

Just consider us Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) to Doug Liman’s John Dalton (Patrick Swayze). Get your popcorn ready.
All IndieWire needed was a two-minute, 48-second trailer to declare the director 100 percent right about his “Road House” remake being tailor-made for movie theaters. Liman’s larger point, presented in a first-person essay on Deadline touting the importance of theatrical, is also correct — but it seems to be especially accurate for this film, which he’s already touted as possibly his best effort to date.
The trailer, released on Thursday, opens with a many-on-1 (the one is protagonist Jake Gyllenhaal) parking lot brawl. It then takes it to the cage; some of the matches are sanctioned, others are definitely not. Later comes the many bar fights, some gunplay, an alligator attack, a high-speed Ferrari chase, arson, a head-on boat collision, and Conor McGregor going nutso with a golf club.

Jake Gyllenhaal suffers no fools in the first trailer for “Road House.”
The forthcoming remake of the 1989 cult classic finds Gyllenhaal starring as a former Mma fighter whose new life has him defending the honor of a Florida dive bar and its patrons from a wicked real estate baron.
Directed by Doug Liman, “Road House” will have its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival before hitting Amazon Prime Video on March 21. That the film will bypass movie theaters entirely before debuting on the streaming service has become a source of contention between Amazon and Liman. In a piece published Wednesday by Deadline, Liman wrote that he felt betrayed by Amazon, which acquired the rights to “Road House” after the company bought MGM. Liman wrote that he made “Road House” with an eye toward theatrical release, similar to how MGM films like “Creed III” first went to theaters before a streaming bow.

“Anyone who knows me and my long-term boyfriend know we meet a lot of our friends online these days,” Ashley Gill says in a Dec. 21 video, showing a photo of her and her friend and collaborator, Grant Gibbs, taking a sultry selfie with Pluto. She’s wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the image of Remy, the rodent culinary whiz from Ratatouille, while Gibbs is wearing mouse ears and a T-shirt with Cars protagonist Lightning McQueen.

Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" (both 2008) in many important ways weren't yet part of the then-nascent Marvel Cinematic Universe when they were first made. Favreau put in a post-credits stinger with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury more as a wink to fans than as an announcement that larger film projects were afoot. Additionally, Downey's cameo in "Incredible" was treated equally casually, with the actors reportedly improvising their dialogue. It would only be until after Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009 that plans for an MCU would be put into place in earnest. In many ways, then, it would be Favreau's "Iron Man 2" in 2010 that launched the MCU properly and put plans for an "Avengers" feature film into motion.
