One of the most panned horror movies based on the works of seminal author Stephen King has found surprise success on free streaming. Despite the quality of the source material, the films based on the works of horror author Stephen King are not always great. The big screen has hosted plenty of masterpieces like The Shining, Stand by Me, and The Shawshank Redemption, but his name is not exactly equivalent to guaranteed success. Cell, The Dark Tower and Riding the Bullet are a few which failed to earn acclaim. And, in the middle ground, where the most divisive movies remain, you will find Thinner.
Thinner, the body horror film based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, has suddenly become a hit on the streaming platform Tubi, a.k.a. one of the few streamers that doesn't require you to pay a single penny or even register.

What happens when we die? This age-old question has confounded philosophers and religious experts alike while occupying our thoughts to an unhealthy degree. The irony is that each of us will one day have the answer, but will not be able to pass on what we find. As an author of horror fiction, Stephen King has been exploring this concept for the past 50 years with novels that run the gamut from thrilling and tense to downright nihilistic and cruel. For example, this month’s The Monkey is a blood-soaked romp through the reality of death brought to life with the icy humor of director Oz Perkins. On the opposite end of the spectrum is King’s 2018 novel Elevation. At just shy of 150 pages, this slim story explores the beautiful possibilities of leaving this world and what we can accomplish before saying goodbye.

The release of The Monkey marks a continuation of Stephen King's long and weird film career. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film reaches far back into King's past for material, now joining the ranks of other King adaptations like Carrie, The Running Man, and The Shining. However, as it turns out, Perkins isn't the first to bring this supposedly untouched short story to life. Kudos to you X-File fanatics who recall the episode “Chinga” in 1998, which used this same plot.
As part of a special series in Season 5, creator Chris Carter recruited some ringers to guest write. The result was an unofficial adaptation of King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey,” swapping out the cymbal-clutching monkey for a creepy, haunted, Victorian Doll. Perhaps for legal reasons, the story was modified, concealing the origins. But enough of the core elements remain to trace the provenance of "Chinga." That short story is...

Star gazing is unavoidable whenever watching Tales from the Crypt. In this beloved anthology series, you typically find actors who were in the early days of their career, but there were also occasions where even more established celebs were dying to work with the Cryptkeeper. One notable instance of the latter was in Season Two’s opener “Dead Right” — this macabre delivery of just deserts featured Demi Moore after she starred in Ghost, the top-grossing film of 1990, and it was shortly before she would go on to become the highest-paid actress of the decade.
Unlike other actors who sought out their spots in Tales from the Crypt, Moore was directly asked to star in an episode. “We were looking for the perfect person, and it occurred to us that the role [of Cathy Marno] was tailor-made for Demi Moore,” recalled Crypt producer William Teitler. And as luck would have it, Moore was a friend of co-producer Joel Silver.

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, Lawrence has confirmed to the folks at Collider that post-production work on the film is almost complete, and he’s “super happy” with it.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to...

The Western genre has been defined by a long list of iconic movies, from Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo to Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. One of the most enduring and popular movies of the genre, Tombstone, assembled one of the best '90s casts for a great project, one made memorable by its quotable script. Bringing action and revenge to the Old West like few movies before, it's practically synonymous with blockbuster Westerns.
Tombstone tells the story of the Earp brothers, a group of lawmen who take on the roles of US Marshals in Tombstone, Arizona. There, they cross paths with the violent Cochise County Cowboys, whose tactics of fear and intimidation make them almost untouchable. While the movie has an iconic and recognizable line-up of leading actors, from Kurt Russell to Sam Elliott, other stars haven't been as closely associated with the movie in the years since.

Big screen adaptations of Stephen King novels have been a high point for the careers of a plethora of actors, including Jack Nicholson, Kathy Bates, Bill Skarsgård, Tom Hanks, and Sissy Spacek. However, one intriguing “what if” scenario nearly had actor and comedian John Candy cast in the lead role in the 1996 film Thinner, by Fright Night and Child's Play director Tom Holland. Thankfully for him, it seems it was a wise choice to turn the role down.

Did The Lion King (1994) Hint At Mufasa & Scar Not Being Related? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Disney’s The Lion King remains one of the most beloved animated films of all time. The relationship between King Mufasa and his cunning brother Scar is the base of the classic tale of betrayal, jealousy, and family conflict. For decades, fans believed Scar and Mufasa were blood brothers, making Scar’s treachery even more devastating. However, many fans were a bit disappointed when they learned that the two brothers were not blood-related. Therefore, fans began hating the upcoming film Mufasa: The Lion King for this revelation.
Some fans have criticized the filmmakers for not portraying Scar and Mufasa as brothers in the prequel, arguing that it changes the emotional weight of their relationship. However, the truth might surprise audiences. The original 1994 Lion King movie had already hinted that Scar and Mufasa were not real brothers after all.

Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.
Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

A little bit ago, I discussed Hardware from 1990 and how it became a little lost to time. Today’s movie is no different as it’s pretty hard to come by and actually has three different versions to look out for. To that end, Richard Stanley can definitely be considered the best horror director you never saw. While he had a resurgence with the Nic Cage cosmic Lovecraft horror Color Out of Space, the rest of his catalogue is either a wonderful hot mess like his incomplete version of The Island of Dr. Moreau where he was fired or his first two movies that just don’t get talked about enough. While Hardware is loosely based on a comic, Dust Devil is what I would call a wholly original South African supernatural slasher flick. It has lore based in both legend and the creative mind of its writer/director Richard...

Stephen King is not just a prolific writer, he's a ravenous reader. Those two qualities mean that he has a strong sense for, among other storytelling talents, what makes a great antagonist. (King's favorite villains include Count Dracula and Anton Chigurh.)
King's own books have plenty of memorable bad guys: Pennywise, Randall Flagg, Greg Stillson, Cujo, etc. One of his more obscure villains resides not in the "Kingverse," though, but the Marvel Comics universe.
Stephen King doesn't watch or like Marvel Studios movies, but he's been a comic book fan for a long time. Some of King's earliest stories, he's said, were ones he copied out of the comics he was reading as a kid. The love has endured since he became a professional writer. King's novel "Firestarter" feels like the superhero and horror genres converging, while "The Dark Tower" series features werewolves dressed like Doctor Doom ("the Wolves of...

The Mist is not only one of the best Stephen King adaptations, but has one of the most shocking endings in movie history. For those looking to relive the horror, or experience it for the first time, the 2007 movie is streaming on Tubi - or will be on October 1st in some regions. The 2007 Frank Darabont film is a classic chiller to get everyone in the mood for the beginning of the spooky season. It works as a fine introduction to the horror marathons everyone will be indulging in throughout October.
Fans of the author will be able to stream The Mist for free on the streaming service, although they will have to suffer those sometimes dubiously placed ads. While Tubi offers every kind of genre there is, horror has become one of their specialties, and surely, their servers will be running hot during the Halloween season.

Stephen King has had a Midas Touch since he published his first novel, Carrie, in 1974. Most of his books have not only topped the New York Times bestseller list but have also been adapted into movies and TV shows. He is now second-highest among the authors with the most adaptations, ranking only behind the legendary William Shakespeare.
Throughout his career, King has left a trail of imaginary gore and chills in his wake, earning himself the title The King of Horror. Additionally, he has experimented with genres like fantasy, crime, science fiction, and mystery, resulting in equally gripping works like The Shawshank Redemption, 11/22/63, and The Green Mile.
Apart from being an author, King has proven to be a great consumer of film and television, and as such, has made cameos in several movies and TV shows, not all of which were adapted from his work. In fact, we're here to...

Stephen King's The Long Walk was initially written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman and is finally being adapted after numerous failed attempts. The plot revolves around a dystopian sci-fi premise where teenage boys compete in a deadly walk, differing from King's typical horror. Lionsgate has enlisted Francis Lawrence to direct the project, promising a faithful and intense adaptation of the original book.
Stephen King has been the world's most prolific and frequently adapted modern-day writer for over half a century. It all started in 1974 with the publication of Carrie. Two years later, King's first adaptation of that novel hit theaters in a film directed by Brian De Palma. The majority of Stephen King's novels (and many of his short stories) have been adapted into films or TV projects over the years, but there a few outliers that have yet to make the leap from page to screen. While it seems inevitable that sooner or later, every King work (with one notable exception) will be adapted, you have to wonder why some books have yet to materialize as movies. In 2016, King was asked by Deadline if there were any books he was surprised hadn't been adapted yet, and he had an answer: "The Regulators." If you came of age in the 1990s, as I did, and were a Stephen King nerd, as I was (and still am), you know all about "The Regulators," because it wasn't a normal Stephen King release. In fact, it technically wasn't even a Stephen King book — it was attributed to King's pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

In the 1990s, Hollywood found both success and failure by digging deep into the back catalog of horror master Stephen King. The decade saw some of the best adaptations of his work and some of the worst (we don't need to talk about "The Lawnmower Man"), but its high and low points alike notably drew from lesser-known King works, as many of his major hits were already adapted in the decades prior. "Thinner" falls into this category: Released in 1984, the novel that inspired the movie was well-regarded upon release, but is mostly known now as the book that helped readers identify King as the writer behind pseudonym Richard Bachman.
Plenty of King fans love "Thinner," but the novel about an overweight man who is cursed to lose weight rapidly to the point of emaciation isn't exactly as high profile as the novelist's more zeitgeist-defining works. The Tom Holland-directed film...

Yesterday, we learned that production has begun on an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman), with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now Deadline has broken the news that the cast of the film includes Star Wars legend Mark Hamill, who just recently finished working on another King adaptation called The Life of Chuck, and Judy Greer of the Halloween and Ant-Man franchises. Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed. Having read the source material, The Major and the mom of the lead character are the first possibilities that come to my mind.

An adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Then the rights passed over to New Line Cinema, where Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal was hired to direct the film from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt, whose credits include the two most recent Scream movies. While doing the press rounds for his film The Last Voyage of the Demeter last year, Øvredal revealed that he was no longer involved with The Long Walk, and said not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life. Last November, Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger...

There have been Stephen King movies for almost as long as there have been Stephen King books. King's first novel "Carrie" arrived in 1974, and by 1976, a "Carrie" movie was burning up movie screens. King was still relatively obscure at the time, but as his publishing career continued, he became a household name. He also became a recognizable figure, thanks to public appearances on talk shows, TV commercials, and of course, cameos in movies. King's very first cameo appearance was in George A. Romero's "Knightriders," a movie about a ren faire where people joust on motorcycles instead of horses. In that film, King plays a character named Hoagie Man, who can be seen eating a hoagie in a rather disgusting fashion.
After that, King had a surprisingly large role in Romero's horror anthology film "Creepshow," which King wrote the screenplay for. There, he plays Jordy Verrill, a hick farmer who...

Stephen King's section of an X-Men comic features Kitty Pryde facing extreme hunger, mirroring the haunting tale of Thinner. King's rare superhero story was a contribution to Heroes for Hope, which raised awareness and money to fight hunger in Africa. The X-Men are subjected to terrifying scenarios in the comic, leaving fans wondering what fresh horrors King could bring if he decided to write another Marvel Comics story.
If youre going to have heroes like the X-Men face their greatest fears, who better to call than the King of Horror himself, Stephen King? While Kings prolific writing career has seen him dip his toes into the world of comics, most of that has been focused on horror and adaptations of his own work. But in a rare contribution to a superhero comic, King subjects a beloved X-Man to a terrifying scenario that reads like a condensed version of his classic novel,...

Stephen King can't stop. The best-selling horror novelist is nothing if not prolific, churning out books on a steady, unstoppable pace for decades now. For years, King said in interviews that the only days he didn't write were Christmas and on his birthday. Later, he admitted that was a lie — he wrote on those days, too. When you write that often, you produce a lot of work. But as King's career began in earnest following the publication of his debut novel "Carrie" in 1974, the publishing world had a curious rule: authors should only publish one book per year. That wasn't good enough for King — he wanted more.
"I've been asked several times if ... I thought I was overpublishing the market as Stephen King," King wrote later. "The answer is no. I didn't think I was overpublishing the market ... but my publishers did." King struck upon a solution to publish more...

It might be hard to believe, but it has been 30 years since the world lost one of the most beloved screen presences in modern times, John Candy. And while we can honor his too-short life and career by watching some of his greatest movies, we’ll never get to experience what his children did. But they are at least letting fans in on their personal feelings for their father, who died on March 4th, 1994.
Posting on her personal Instagram, John Candy’s eldest daughter Jennifer shared a photo of the two with the caption, “30 years ago today … feels like both a lifetime with and without you . Miss you and love you always”, along with a heart emoji. Jennifer had previously said, “He was your everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable…Very much similar to characters that he was on film.”

Casting choices can have a big impact on the outcome of Stephen King's film adaptations. Actors like Melanie Griffith and Al Pacino could have played iconic roles in King's movies. The Dark Tower could have had a different creative team and Russell Crowe as the lead.
Adaptations of Stephen King's stories have varied in quality, but a small change in the casting could have had a big impact on some of his films. Whether the movies are a hit or miss, they usually undergo a thorough casting process which sees numerous people audition for key roles. With the notoriety around Stephen King's work, when a film adaptation is being made with his name attached, it often draws attention from well-known actors.
While some of these movies have gone on to earn critical acclaim and become hugely popular, there were interesting names tied to major characters that ultimately lost the roles to someone else.

One Stephen King adaptation from the 1990s would have been a very different film if it had starred John Candy, which was the original plan.
Per CinemaBlend, the Scream Factory Blu-ray release of the 1996 movie Thinner included a commentary track with producer Mitchell Galin sharing some new insight into the film. According to Galin, John Candy was the first choice to play the film's lead character. In fact, an offer was sent out to Candy prior to the beloved actor's death in 1994, but he was apparently not interested. Galin isn't exactly sure why Candy declined the film, noting how he didn't "care" too much and quickly moved forward with the production.

Thinner, a 1996 movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel, had John Candy as King's original choice for the lead role of Billy Halleck. Candy reportedly declined the role, possibly because he didn't spark to the material, and Robert John Burke ultimately played the character. Candy's inclusion in Thinner might have tarnished his career as a comedy icon.

We all remember John Candy as one of the most lovable comedians to have ever stepped in front of the screen. So rare were his dramatic performances that many might be hard-pressed to name any (he really only dipped his toe through JFK and Only the Lonely). But if Stephen King had gotten his way, Candy would have starred in Thinner, which is about a man who gets a curse placed upon him that causes him to lose weight at a deadly rate.

Horror author Stephen King originally wanted John Candy for the lead role in the adaptation of one of his novels. Candy's comedic talent and potential for a dramatic role made him an interesting choice for the film. Despite reaching out to Candy's representatives, the casting did not work out, and the movie ended up being a failure regardless.

Director Edgar Wright is remaking The Running Man because he believes the original film deviated too much from the book, which he likes more. The remake of The Running Man will be closer to Stephen King's original story, making it darker and more isolating compared to the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led movie. The new adaptation of The Running Man promises to offer a fresh and unfamiliar experience, different from the original movie, and may become as well-remembered as the 1987 version.
Director Edgar Wright has explained why he's remaking the classic Stephen King movie The Running Man, which he believes would be perfect if adapted from the book. Written by King under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, the dystopian thriller was adapted into a movie of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. While the film is a well-remembered sci-fi classic, its content is only loosely based on the author's original work.

Psycho II was initially intended to be a made-for-tv movie, but was eventually released theatrically and became a surprise hit. The script for Psycho II deviated from the original sequel written by Robert Bloch and was a completely new take on the character of Norman Bates. Despite facing competition from Return of the Jedi, Psycho II was the second biggest movie of the summer in 1983 and earned a significant amount of money at the box office.
Creating a sequel to Psycho takes a lot of guts, as the Alfred Hitchcock film is considered a masterpiece. Creating a sequel to Psycho takes a lot of guts, as the Alfred Hitchcock film is considered a masterpiece. When director Richard Franklin and screenwriter Tom Holland decided to make Psycho II, no one could have expected the runaway hit it would become in 1983, least of all Holland, who calls its success “a shock.”

Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man) was best known as an actor when he was hired to write the screenplay for a project that sounded like an insane idea: a 23-years-later sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. But somehow, Holland and director Richard Franklin managed to deliver a Psycho II (watch it Here) that is a worthy follow-up to the original. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Holland has published – through Holland House Entertainment – a 176 page book called Oh Mother, What Have You Done?, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Psycho II.
Authored by Tom Holland and containing unpublished memoirs by late Psycho II director Richard Franklin and conversations with the film’s editor Andrew London, Oh Mother, What Have You Done? offers fans a unique
glimpse into the continuation of the beloved Psycho film franchise, which created nightmares for millions of
people showering worldwide.
