Don Johnson is the latest addition to the cast of Ryan Murphy’s upcoming ABC series “Dr. Odyssey.”

Variety has confirmed that Johnson will star in the series alongside previously announced lead Joshua Jackson. Plot and character details for the show are being kept under wraps, but sources say the series is believed to be a medical procedural. It is slated to premiere during the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

Kevin Costner and wife Christine Baumgartner's divorce was an "unpleasant surprise" for the actor that allegedly came as a result of his busy filming schedule, according to a new report from People. Baumgartner filed for divorce last week, People initially reported.

Costner's representative said in a May 2 statement to the outlet, "It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action." The rep added, "We ask that his, Christine's, and their children's privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time." Champions is based on the Goya Award winning Spanish film Campeones, which Universal Pictures International released in 2018. It centers on a stubborn and hotheaded minor league basketball coach who is forced to coach a Special Olympics team when he is sentenced to community service. Actors with intellectual disabilities rounding out the cast to ensure authenticity in the storytelling include Madison Tevlin, Joshua Felder, Kevin Iannucci, Ashton Gunning, Matthew Von Der Ahe, Tom Sinclair, James Day Keith, Alex Hintz, Casey Metcalfe, Bradley Edens and Champ Pederson.

HBO Max is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in October and everything leaving at the end of the month.

The list includes HBO Originals like the limited series “The Undoing” starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant, out Oct. 25, and David Byrne’s “American Utopia” special event about Byrne’s Broadway show that electrified audiences, out Oct. 17.

There is also Nathan Fielder’s comedic docuseries “How To With John Wilson,” out Oct. 23, and the first season finale of “Lovecraft Country” on Oct. 18.

Among the things leaving at the end of the month are “Amelie,” “Ocean’s 11,” “V For Vendetta,” “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.”

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.

Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.

In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

Epix has put in development two more series, Wicked, Kansas and Rocket Men. Epix is expected to make the announcement during its TCA session.

Veteran script supervisor Karen Golden, best known for her work on “Transformers,” died Tuesday after a seven year battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 78.

Golden spent her career working alongside a long list of major film directors, including Michael Bay, John Huston and Ron Shelton. She collaborated with Bay on scripts for “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Bad Boys II,” “The Rock” and “The Island” in addition to three of the installments of the “Transformers” series: “Transformers,” “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” and “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon.” Her body of work also encompasses six films with Shelton, including “Bull Durham,” “Hollywood Homicide,” “Tin Cup,””Blaze,” “Cobb” and the 1992 film starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson “White Men Can’t Jump.”

Additionally, Golden worked on four films with director David O. Russel: “Silver Linings Playbook,” “I Heart Huckabees,” “The Fighter” and her last credit “Accidental Love.”

Kevin Costner has returned to the western genre which has so often brought him success. It’s not feature films this time but with the new television series “Yellowstone,” currently bringing excellent ratings to the Paramount Network. Westerns have been good to Costner at the movies, with his most successful winning him two Oscars as producer and director of “Dances with Wolves” in 1990.

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Coco dominated the Thanksgiving holiday and then again last weekend. There are no signs that it will slow down as there is only one major release scheduled for this week, the Morgan Freeman-led comedy Just Getting Started. Disney has been enjoying a good last couple of months as they released Thor: Ragnarok, Coco, and has Star Wars: The Last Jedi coming out next week. Until then, let’s see if Just Getting Started is worth your time.

What we are excited about: The cast is about the only thing we’re excited about with this movie. Morgan Freeman, Tommy Lee Jones, and Rene Russo together in a comedy sounds promising. Add in the director of Tin Cup (1996) and Bull Durham (1988), Ron Shelton, and you should at least get a solidly entertaining movie.

It’s a ringing endorsement for the Gen-x/Millennial generation that Rene Russo has faith in us. In the ‘90s, Russo was one of the women who paved the way for female icons with roles in Lethal Weapon 3, In the Line of Fire, Outbreak and Ransom. Fans like me grew up watching Rene Russo, Linda Hamilton, Geena Davis and Sarah Michelle Gellar do the same things Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and other men did, so we don’t even question it today. Ron Shelton, the filmmaker behind sports comedies such as Tin Cup, White Men Can’t Jump and Bull Durham, is set to write and direct Escape Artist.

Announced on Friday by Gold Star Films and Signature Films and based on script written by Shelton and Al Reinert, Escape Artist will depict the true-life events that led Ed “Hacksaw” Jones to break out of 14 prisons and become the first person to ever be put on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted list without ever committing a violent crime.

I loved Brawl In Cell Block 99, the second feature film from novelist and filmmaker S. Craig Zahler. His first? Bone Tomahawk. I love that too, for the record. Zahler already feels like a very different voice in American film, a man content for his budgets to be low and control over his material to be high.
