Amelia and Laura are supposed to be the same age, but Catherine Keener is a full decade older than Anne Heche.
Holofcener explained in an interview with Indiwire that she felt there wasn't enough space for Miramax to focus on more than one female driven movie: "Unfortunately, Miramax opened the film at the same time the company was releasing "Emma." Let's just put it this way: There was not a lot of focus on "Walking and Talking." We didn't even have a premiere or a party. I was invited to the "Emma" premiere. I think that was my consolation prize."
Nicole Holofcener saw Catherine Keener in Johnny Suede and liked her work and her look. Their first meeting was at a gym in NYC. She subsequently cast Keener in Walking and Talking (1996), Lovely and Amazing (2001), Friends with Money (2006), Please Give (2010) and Enough Said (2013).
This is the only film edited by Alisa Lepselter which was directed by someone other than Woody Allen.
In a 2023 interview with Variety, Nicole Holofcener spoke about some of the initial feedback she got after the film came out: "It was playing at Lincoln Center Plaza in New York, and I went to the first showing. It was at noon, and there were about ten people in the theater. Afterwards I was in the bathroom and I heard two older women discussing it. "It's very amateurish," one said... There was also a review from that movie which could apply to all of my films, though I was never given it again, which said, 'It looks like she just took notes from her diary and filmed them.'"
