Weed

This film is a great record of what occurs and what type of people you will encounter during a trip to Amsterdam during High Times' Annual Cannabis Cup. For the first time on film we get a glimpse of just how large of an industry marijuana is in Amsterdam and how thousands of tourists are drawn to the hundreds of coffee shops to sample their own variations and strains which are always getting bigger and better.

The Cannabis Cup is a competition sponsored by High Times solely to find the best strain of marijuana for that year. Attendees have the option to be judges. There are hundreds of coffee shops in Amsterdam but not all of them have entered their marijuana into the competition. There are shows and events throughout the competition. A lot of the shows are spectacles to honor marijuana. There are tours available for those who want to go only to the shops that have official entries. The shops are all appealing in one way or another, being either very traditional or very new age. The coffee shop scene seems to be what we Americans know as the "bar scene" but is way more mellow and comfortable.

The people being interviewed in the film are all there for one reason, to smoke good marijuana legally. A lot of them hide behind the mask of being a Cannabis Cup "judge" and need to sample as many of the shops entries as they can in their weekend. The shopkeepers all give interesting insight into the commercialization of the event. This film did a great job of showing us an industry that is pretty much only legal in that country and how successful it can be. The film is tastefully done and covers a wide array of topics surrounding marijuana from legalization and industrialization to socialism and acceptance. Smoker and non-smoker alike, after seeing this film, you will want to visit Amsterdam just to see it for yourself.

Weed is an in depth look into the pot-smokers world, those who will venture all the way to Amsterdam in Holland in order to get the buzz, away from life and all. It is at the Cannibus Cup sponsored by High Times I believe, as many many people, largely Americans, gather in a cultivation to judge a variety of different products (ala Marijuana) in one of the only countries that is legal to hold it.

The movie depicts a world of obsession, intrigue and odd people, and no I'm not talking about Coppola's The Conversation. It is an occasionaly funny, spellbinding and weird look into people who dedicate they're lives to pot and it is also note worthy to point out that if weed didn't exist, many of these people would have nothing to do at all. It is an awesome feat of a documentary just by showing the reality of the pot-smoker once again, and yet like Cheech and Chong (damn near exactly like them) is exaggerated if only for a while.

Definately a watchable, if short, movie that should appeal on a level for non-smokers and smokers. A-

It was OK, but it did show why pot will never gain acceptance in the USA with people like this leading the charge. I would consider myself republican on a lot of subjects but this is where I differ from the party. Like a lot of those in the film I believe the war on drugs is a crock and not at all effective. But when all that is shown at the forefront is people like these nut jobs then how do they ever think they will gain the support they need? They need to keep these people off the podium and get people that can make more rational arguments for legalization for weed or at least hemp. Anyone that looks like they would have been at home at a dead concert should be instantly kicked off the speaking list.

I understand their statements its just that they will never be taken seriously as long as they act like everyone should just loosen up and quit taking life so seriously. There are a lot of people that work 9 to 5 jobs that just want to smoke a bowl when they get off work like having a drink. There is nothing wrong with that but you get the impression from some of these people that anyone that has a job is a sell-out to the man.

Until they accept that they need to embrace these people they will forever remain on the outside looking in.

I came across this little bud of excellence while flipping through the Comcast Ondemand library. The title caught my eye and a friend of mine told me to check it out. Keeping within the documentary boundaries this is the second best weedumentary that I have seen (only second to GRASS). Giving us a tremendous grasp on Amsterdam culture in the cannabis sense, this movie documents several coffee shops, the cannabis cup and a number of bystandars to fill us in on past events, experiences and you cant leave out all the legalization propaganda scattered throughout. I recommend "WEED" for anybody that enjoys a toke here and then. I give WEED 7 out of 10 buds.
