If Gold Derby's Emmy odds are correct, then Kathy Bates is on the verge of making history.
The veteran star is currently favored to win Best Drama Actress for the reimagined Matlock. She would be 77 years old when the trophies are handed out Sept. 14, which would make her the oldest woman ever in the category by 15 years.
Glenn Close (Damages) has held the Emmy record since 2009, and before that 2008, when she won back-to-back Best Drama Actress trophies at ages 62 and 61. Prior to Close, the category's oldest winners were 60-year-old Sally Field (Brothers & Sisters in 2007), 58-year-old Barbara Stanwyck (The Big Valley in 1966), 57-year-old Barbara Bel Geddes (Dallas in 1980), 50-year-old Sada Thompson (Family in 1978), and 50-year-old Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder in 2015).
After winning the Critics Choice Award for Matlock, a shocked Bates thanked showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman "for creating such an amazing role for an old lady like me.

Netflix's new series based on Harlan Coben's novels about the character Myron Bolitar got a major name as producer. Mega TV producer David E. Kelley (Lincoln Lawyer) will be collaborating with Coben as co-writers and co-executive producers, per Deadline.
Coben signed a deal with Netflix several years ago which has seen several of his books adapted as shows and upon renewing in 2022, Netflix got access to the 11 Bolitar novels and a novella called Win. Having Kelley team up with the author is perfect, as he already has Lincoln Lawyer streaming on Netflix, which is also based on the series of novels by Michael Connelly.
Kelley is a prolific television producer and writer, having created some of the biggest shows of the last few decades, including L.A. Law, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Presumed Innocent, and several others. And not all of them are legal shows; the author famously wrote...

Can Apple TV+'s Severance or HBO's The Last of Us win Best Drama Series? For most of Emmy history, the answer to that question would be no. That's because they're science-fiction shows, which have historically been under-appreciated by voters and thus underrepresented at the Emmys. Only one sci-fi show has ever won Best Drama Series: Lost in 2005. That was 20 years ago, but the TV Academy has changed drastically in the intervening years.
Some of the most beloved shows in TV history are sci-fi or fantasy, including Star Trek and Doctor Who that have been around for almost as long as TV has existed. But Emmy winners for drama series usually follow real-world professionals like doctors, lawyers, and police officers. Even as those procedural genres started falling out of fashion in the 21st century, the subjects that replaced them were still couched in reality: politics (The West Wing), organized crime,...

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek became a pop cultural phenomenon upon release back in the ‘60s. Despite only lasting three seasons, the story of space exploration in the future and diplomatic missions became extremely engaging to fans and the core cast like William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy became legends.
The original series had always been a story of three: Shatner’s Kirk, Nimoy’s Spock, and DeForest Kelley’s McCoy. The latter reportedly faced the brunt of the stardom as he only got typecast in McCoy-esque roles after his tenure in Star Trek. The actor mentioned that he was taken by surprise as he felt he had the most human character in the series.

Before landing that role, however, she captivated audiences, and has since gained a cult following, with her performance in the underrated crime proceduralLie to Me. Williams played Dr. Gillian Foster, a brilliant psychologist and a key member of the Lightman Group, a team of experts at detecting deception, led by Tim Roth as the brilliant but often unpredictable Dr. Cal Lightman. The Fox series was partially inspired by the groundbreaking work of psychologist Paul Ekman, who specializedin the study of microexpressions and body language.

Long before the Roys of New York or the Sopranos of New Jersey, one family dominated television: the Ewings of "Dallas." The genre-shaking soap opera aired for 14 seasons from 1978 to 1991, chronicling the dramatic, twist-filled epic saga of the Ewing Oil dynasty.
On a picturesque ranch in Dallas, Texas, the family used their money, connections, and cunning to bat away threats from outside and within. Whatever threats that rival oilman, spurned lovers, or wannabe politicians think they can pose, "Dallas" always reminds us that there's nothing stronger -- or more dangerous -- than family.
Over 30 years have passed since the final episode of the original series, and there's been well over 10 years of silence from this world following a brief revival on TNT. As such, many are curious about what happened to the cast of "Dallas," so we tracked down as much information about its massive ensemble cast as we could.

A Max original, The Pitt is a medical drama that chronicles one 15-hour shift in the emergency room of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Gritty and authentic, each episode in the show covers a single hour of the shift beginning at seven in the morning. With medical students and interns in tow on their very first day, Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle), the show’s senior attending, navigates the organized chaos that’s become synonymous with working in the ER.
A realistic representation of medical personnel on the frontlines, the series isn’t made for those with a queasy stomach. At any given moment, viewers could witness a simple flesh wound or the inside of someone’s chest cavity. It is an ER after all. Given the scope of the series, The Pitt has an extensive cast, which audiences might recognize from other television shows and movies. Below are the...

In her documentary “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” the star continues to explore the at times lonesome space she has occupied since bursting on the scene in 1986: that of being a representative for deaf people, and being herself. For more than three decades, Matlin was the only deaf performer to have won an Oscar, and among the few to have what could be considered a mainstream acting career. That changed when Troy Kotsur, her co-star in the 2021 Oscar-winning drama “Coda,” took home the prize for best supporting actor.
At 19, Matlin was cast opposite William Hurt in the adaptation of the play “Children of a Lesser God.” She portrayed Sarah Norman, a janitor in a school for the deaf. Hurt’s character is a speech teacher. She resists speaking. He says he won’t push her to speak but then does. After production, Hurt became Matlin’s romantic partner. So,...

Exclusive: David Lynch had a great knack for discovering leading-lady talent, actresses who would ascend to bigger heights. One of those is Lara Flynn Boyle, who played the role of Donna Hayward in Lynch’s early 1990s ABC series Twin Peaks.
“There goes the true Willy Wonka of filmmaking,” the actress said in a statement to Deadline on Thursday following Lynch’s death at age 78. “I feel like I got the golden ticket getting a chance to work with him. He will be greatly missed.”
The arrival of Boyle was declared in an October 1990 Rolling Stone cover she shared with fellow Twin Peaks actress Sherilynn Fenn and Mädchen Amick that heralded “The Women of Twin Peaks.”

Since its end in 1997, "Married... with Children" has maintained a legacy as one of the strangest and longest-running television shows of its kind. The Fox sitcom was, on its face, a standard multi-camera sitcom about a dysfunctional family and the colorfully zany characters that breezed in and out of their suburban enclosure. At the same time, it bucked contemporary genre conventions, daring to push the boundaries of acceptable behavior for sitcom protagonists while leaning into the surrealist subgenre -- which, relative to the tamer landscape of TV back in the late '80s and '90s, surely must've surprised some audiences.

During the early '90s, there were few TV actresses hotter in Hollywood than Lara Flynn Boyle. After a handful of supporting credits in the late '80s in movies like "Poltergeist III" and shows like "Amerika," Boyle landed a main cast role as Donna Hayward on David Lynch and Mark Frost's genre-bending supernatural mystery series "Twin Peaks." When the show quickly became a pop culture sensation, Boyle was launched to stardom, and she got plenty of opportunities to show off her talents in the show's first season, where Donna is particularly central to the plot.
In the wake of her "Twin Peaks" fame, Boyle appeared in a number of prominent movies through the early '90s, playing Stacy in "Wayne's World" and co-starring in the 1992 Matthew Modine film "Equinox," among others. Bradford English had a screen acting career that spanned from 1971 to 2010, and over those 39 years he racked up more than 70 credits – but for many of us, he’s best remembered for playing the drunk, abusive blowhard John Strode in the 1995 horror sequel Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Sadly, we lost English right before Halloween this year, as it has been reported that he passed away on October 25th in Pasadena, California at the age of 82.

Suits is one of the best legal shows out there, but there are more to enjoy for fans of the series!
Suits has been one of the bigger TV success stories of the last few years. The original series ran on USA Network from 2011 to 2019, a great run that made it a huge rating smash. In 2023, the series hit Netflix and soon rocketed to the top of the viewing charts. That’s led to plans for a new revival series on NBC.
The show rests on the fun of the legal antics combined with great character work, such as the romances and fun banter of the characters. It joins a long list of legal dramas, many of them classic stuff like Law & Order centering on major cases. Yet others are fun in how they have a mix of great characters, sometimes offbeat cases and even some humor. If you’re a fan of Suits,...

It was the “love of the book” that brought the powerhouse duo of producer J.J. Abrams and showrunner David E. Kelley together for Apple TV+’s reimagining of Scott Turow’s bestselling legal thriller “Presumed Innocent.”
They’d vowed to team up for years, but it took Covid for the stars — and their schedules — to finally align to allow them to put their shared creative talents together. Given health restrictions, studios were looking for projects that could be produced in contained circumstances, so courtroom dramas were a natural place to hunt for ideas. Abrams asked Kelley if there was any book that he’d be interested in adapting, “and the first one that came to mind was ‘Presumed Innocent’,” Kelley tells Gold Derby in our exclusive video interview. As luck would have it. Abrams’ production company had secured the rights years earlier. Watch the video interview above.

T’is the season — for male strippers? Yes, actually. Yes indeed.
Netflix’s new Christmas movie “The Merry Gentlemen” is now streaming, telling story of a young dancer who comes home to find that her parents’ business — and thus, her whole childhood, essentially — may be going under. So, to help save it, she organizes a Christmas-themed male revue to pull in ticket sales.
The movie features a lot of familiar faces, but perhaps some new ones for you too. So, we’ve got you covered.
Here are all the major players in “The Merry Gentlemen.”
Netflix Ashley (Britt Robertson)
Ashley is a professional dancer, who is unceremoniously fired for being too old (in her 30s). She’s played by “Tomorrowland” and “The Longest Ride” star Britt Robertson. She also starred in “The Space Between Us” and more recently, “The Rookie: Feds,” as well as a few episodes of “The Rookie.

There are few character types on television whom it would seem quite as exhausting to be as the only guy who knows how to get things done on a Taylor Sheridan show. From Kevin Costner on Yellowstone to Jeremy Renner on Mayor of Kingstown — and now Billy Bob Thornton on Sheridan’s new drama Landman — these men are perpetually running from one crisis to the next, all of them someone else’s fault, no one else seemingly having the first clue how to solve them.

James Spader's filmography proves that the actor is one of the most versatile performers in Hollywood. He is also someone who reinvented himself halfway through his astonishing career. For the first 25 years, Spader was a solid performer in movies, taking on several high-profile supporting roles in movies like Pretty in Pink. He also proved he could pique the interest of critically acclaimed directors like Steven Soderbergh, Oliver Stone, Mike Nichols, and David Cronenberg while appearing in blockbusters like Stargate.
However, Spader made a change in 2003 when he took on a role in the TV series The Practice. Since then, his movie roles remain minimal, with only a few major releases. Instead, Spader focuses on TV now. He followed up The Practice with the leading the main cast in its spin-off Boston Legal, took a shot at starring in The Office, and enjoyed the greatest success of his career with...

It’s ironic that a show about a woman trying to get revenge for her daughter’s opioid overdose death is so addicting, but here we are.
Kathy Bates’ Matlock is one of the 2024 season’s most popular new shows, and with good reason. People love her undercover mission, raw talent, and the twists in every episode.
If you love this show, there are a number of other legal series you have to check out, going all the way back to the late 1980s.
The Original Matlock (1986 – 1995) (NBC/Screenshot)
The original Matlock is very different from Kathy Bates’ version, but if you haven’t seen the ’80s version in a while, you’ll probably enjoy it more now that you can compare it with our Matlock.
Andy Griffith’s Matlock could arguably be seen as a reboot of Perry Mason, or at least based on it. Like the legendary Raymond Burr character,...

The second season of “Elsbeth” is airing now on CBS, with Carrie Preston continuing in her Emmy-winning role of Elsbeth Tascioni that began on “The Good Wife” in 2010. “I just couldn’t even wait to get going again, because every day I look at it as a bit of a miracle,” she tells us. “I started playing this character 14 years ago, and never would have dreamt that it would have led to a show called ‘Elsbeth.’ So every day is definitely a gift.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The Elsbeth character started out as a lawyer on “The Good Wife” and “The Good Fight,” but now she’s a de facto detective helping to solve murders alongside Carra Patterson‘s Officer Kaya Blanke and Wendell Pierce‘s Captain Charles Wallace. All three series are created and executive produced by Robert King and Michelle King, with Jonathan Tolins serving as...

While she is most known for her fan-favorite Orange is the New Black character, the best Taryn Manning TV shows and movies reveal she has a much wider range than she revealed during her tenure as Litchfield inmate Pennsatucky. Born in Virginia in 1978, Taryn Manning has been a professional performer since 1994, though it took several decades for her career as an actor to fully gain momentum. Her upbringing may have been tragic, having grown up in a trailer park and losing her father to suicide at a young age, but this didn't stop Manning from pursuing her dreams.
She got her first roles in the late 1990s with bit-parts in shows like NYPD Blue and The Practice, with her first notable appearance agrubably being in Boston Public since the one-off role was written specifically with her in mind. From here she began getting more and more prominent roles, eventually landing...
