This year’s Guest Director, the Grammy-nominated and genre-defying musician, composer and activist Anoushka Shankar, has worked with Brighton Festival to shape an inspiring, culture-crossing contemporary music programme which centres collaboration and celebrates boldness, diversity and connection. The programme offers opportunities for people to come together and imagine new possibilities, in line with the Brighton Festival 2025 theme New Dawn.
Anoushka Shankar says: “By bringing together artists and modalities from all over the world, with their rich and varied heritages, we can reimagine what’s possible, through music. There are so many artists that I’m excited about, who will bring their unique perspectives, creativity and passion to the Festival. It’s a music programme we want everyone to connect with and feel part of and feel inspired by.”
Anoushka Shankar will perform her brand-new album Chapter III: We Return to Light for the first time in the UK in Brighton Dome Concert Hall.

Exclusive: Watermelon Pictures has announced the completion of documentary The Encampments, chronicling the Columbia University Gaza Solidarity Encampment and the international wave of student activism it ignited.

The documentary is produced by Grammy Award-winning rap artist Macklemore and directed by Kei Pritsker, a journalist and producer at BreakThrough News, and award-winning filmmaker Michael T Workman (Meantime).
It will world premiere at the Cph:dox documentary festival in Copenhagen on March 25, ahead of a U.S. nationwide theatrical release later this year.

War films have been an integral part of cinema for over a century. Each war film offers an immersive view for the audience to experience the hardships faced by soldiers. The moral dilemmas illustrate how complex humans are and how complicated every war can be. Additionally, every war film teaches some history related to the battle it portrays.
Many war films tackle bleak topics and showcase the harsh conditions faced by soldiers on both sides of the conflict. Among the numerous war films produced, some are extremely visceral, evoking intense emotions from the audience. With such a rich genre of war films, these films stand out as some of the saddest ever made.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and TCM will team up this fall to present a gala evening of excerpts from the scores to “iconic” Jewish-themed films, the organizations announced Wednesday.
The Oct. 20 concert was announced during the closing night of the 2025 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, via the showing of a video heralding the event featuring TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz, who will host the program this fall. The evening will take place as part of the 25th anniversary season for the film festival; a previous concert of Jewish film music took place 15 years ago during a 10th anniversary celebration.
“I’ve been coming to the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival for years, and I couldn’t be more excited for this extraordinary celebration of film and music,” Mankiewicz said in a statement. “Iconic scores from classic Jewish cinema performed live? That’s a night you don’t want to miss.

Brazil's I'm Still Here captured Best International Feature at the 2025 Oscars on Sunday, becoming the country's first winner in this category after four previous nominations.
I'm Still Here, which led the Gold Derby odds, defeated Emilia Pérez (France), Flow (Latvia), The Girl with the Needle (Denmark), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Germany).
Directed by Walter Salles, I'm Still Here stars Fernanda Torres as a mother forced to reinvent herself when her family's life is shattered by an act of arbitrary violence during the tightening grip of a military dictatorship in Brazil, 1971. The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress (Torres). This was the second Salles film nominated in this category after Central Station (1998), which lost to Life Is Beautiful (Italy). Other previous nominees from Brazil were Four Days in September (1997), O Quatrilho (1995), and Keeper of Promises (The Given Word) (1962).

Walter Salles’ deeply moving drama “I’m Still Here” has won the Academy Award for best international feature, marking a historic first for Brazil.
The film, which tells the real-life story of Eunice Paiva’s decades-long search for justice after her husband’s disappearance during Brazil’s military dictatorship, has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Its surprise nomination for best picture — alongside expected nods for international feature and best actress for star Fernanda Torres — solidified its status as a major contender.
The film beat out France’s “Emilia Perez,” Germany’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Denmark’s “The Girl With the Needle” and Latvia’s “Flow.”
“I’m so honored to receive this, and in such an extraordinary group of filmmakers,” Salles said during his acceptance speech. “This goes to a woman who, after a loss suffered during an authoritarian regime, decided not to bend. And to resist.

With her Oscar win for the Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez,” Zoe Saldaña joins a short list of performers who have won for non-English language roles. She’s just the third ever to do so for Best Supporting Actress, after Penélope Cruz for “Vicky Christina Barcelona” and Yuh-jung Youn in “Minari.”
But there is further significance in Saldaña’s victory. While several actors have won for non-English roles in American movies, such as Cruz and Youn, Saldaña is the first acting winner from a Best International Feature Oscar nominee in 25 years – since Roberto Benigni exuberantly won Best Actor for 1998’s “Life is Beautiful.” Both that film and “Emilia Pérez” were also Best Picture nominees.
In Oscar history, in fact, Saldaña and Benigni are the only two actors to win for movies also nominated in the international cateorgy, which was referred to as Best Foreign-Language Film in the era when “Life is Beautiful” won the award.

The Oscars are coming up on March 3, and while Hollywood is buzzing with predictions, let’s take a moment to address the elephant in the Dolby Theatre, the Academy doesn’t always get it right. In fact, sometimes they get it so spectacularly wrong that fans are left questioning reality.
Remember when Austin Butler lost Best Actor to Brendan Fraser? Nothing against Fraser, but Butler became Elvis, and yet, the Academy said, “Nope, let’s give it to the guy in a fat suit.”
And don’t even get us started on Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain, a decision so controversial that even Academy voters have admitted they messed up.
Roberto Benigni in Life Is Beautiful and Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain (Credits- Miramax and Paramount)
It’s not just about bad choices; it’s about the politics, the campaigning, and sometimes, just plain old favoritism.

Italian director, actor, and screenwriter Roberto Benigni returned to the scene after his timeless masterpiece “Life Is Beautiful” (1997) to present, in 2005, a work that is no less beautiful and splendid—even though it did not achieve the same level of fame and popularity. In fact, it is striking that the opinions about “The Tiger and the Snow” (2005) were so divided and varied.
In my view, there are many similarities between the two films. First, of course, is that Roberto Benigni wrote, directed, and starred in both films and in both, his real-life wife, Nicoletta Braschi, plays the female lead. The chemistry and complete harmony between the two are nothing short of astonishing. The second—and, in my opinion, most important—similarity is that in both films, Benigni searches for beauty amidst ugliness. We live in an age of biopics, and musicians are an unusually common theme that dominates that genre. In recent years, we've seen biographical dramatizations of Elton John ("Rocket Man"), Elvis Presley ("Elvis"), and Amy Winehouse ("Back to Black"). As of this writing, the most recent entry to the musical biopic genre is "A Complete Unknown," where Timothée Chalamet channels what can only be described as a "pretty good" iteration of Bob Dylan. The cascade of musically-infused biographies won't slow down any time soon, either. We've got projects on Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and The Beatles (among many others) on tap for the next few years.
The barrage of pop chart biopics begs the question, which one is the best? Is there a biopic of a musician that is considered better than all the rest? The answer, according to IMDb, is yes. In fact, there is one film...

War and conflict have affected every corner of the globe in one way or another, so it’s only natural that filmmakers worldwide have made incredible movies depicting warfare from their perspective. While big-budget American war movies often dominate the conversation when it comes to this genre, it’s important not to forget all the astounding non-English-language war movies that have left their mark on cinema. From global conflicts to lesser-known national crises, war movies have the power to educate and inform viewers about historical conflicts.
Many of the best war movies ever made were foreign films that shone a light on different countries' experiences of war. Some of these were all-time classics like Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winning triumph Life is Beautiful, while others were not as well known but are equally deserving of attention and praise. Marisa Paredes, the admired Spanish actress who collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar in such films as The Flower of My Secret, All About My Mother and The Skin I Live In, has died. She was 78.
Her death was announced Tuesday by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Spain, which called her one of the country’s “most iconic actors … her body of work was defined by women who were strong, ambivalent, broken, passionate, enigmatic, but who were, above all, very human.”
Almodóvar told Spanish public broadcaster Rtve that “it is as if I woke up from a bad dream … I am struggling to come to terms with Marisa’s death.” In their country, she was known as “an Almodóvar girl.”
Paredes also portrayed Roberto Benigni’s socialite mother-in-law in Life Is Beautiful (1997) and the head of the orphanage in Guillermo del Toro’s horror film The Devil’s Backbone (2001), set during the Spanish Civil War.

The IMDb top-250 is a curious portrait of populist taste. The list is, it's worth remembering, culled only from user ratings on the IMDb website, and, judging by the films on the list, the average IMDb user seems to be a college-age white male with a taste for crime, guns, fantasy, and the ultra-masculine. The top movies on the list all seem to be the types of movies that young men would own posters for, proudly displayed on their dorm room walls. There are many unassailable classics, to be sure, and young teens could easily look to the list as a rudimentary introduction to the world of cinema, but the list seems ... skewed. There's not a lot of variety. It's not curated by a single critic, nor even a panel of critics. It's just a general consensus of the taste of the types of people who like to rate movies on IMDb.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus began her career in comedy, as so many comedians do, with the Second City, the stalwart and long-lived comedy troupe based in Chicago. She was only 21, but Louis-Dreyfus gave such an impressive performance at a Second City event that she was immediately asked to join the cast of "Saturday Night Live." It seems that NBC talent scouts lurk at Second City performances all the time. She starred on "SNL" from 1982 until 1985, becoming friends with writer Larry David during her tenure. A few years later, David and comedian Jerry Seinfeld created the sitcom "Seinfeld," wherein Louis-Dreyfus starred as Jerry's friend Elaine.
"Seinfeld," once might recall, was something of a hit, lasting 180 episodes over nine seasons. Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for seven Emmys, winning one. She would go on to win another Emmy for her performance in "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and an additional nine Emmys for "Veep," eight of them for acting.

In a world dominated by Hollywood blockbusters, many films from beyond the English-speaking lands fly under the radar. From the most comforting and heartwarming films to awe-inspiring and thrilling movies are being made in different parts of the world. They fail to reach a widespread audience because of accessibility issues and because people are not welcoming to the idea of foreign-media consumption. With the boom of K-pop and Korean dramas, Korean media does not fall into the unwelcome category of things. However, many countries have made exceptional films.
Why Watch Non-English Movies?
When Hollywood as an entertainment industry churns out gems left, right, and center; American audiences are not very likely to tap into the international cinematic landscape. Frequently, foreign language cinema is passed up for pretentious people’s activity. This perception leads to many cinematic gems being undiscovered. As South Korean director Bong Joon Ho rightfully said in his...

However, some of his roles have required a more immersive style of method acting. While the actor has always gone all-out for his films, he revealed that drawing from his own life experience was not something he believed in.

Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best International Feature.)
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Their top 15 vote-getters will make it to the next round. That list of semi-finalists will be revealed on December 17, 2024.

Having already collected a screenwriting award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, “A Real Pain” scripter Jesse Eisenberg poses quite a serious threat in the upcoming Best Original Screenplay Oscar contest. Since he also stars in the dramedy from Searchlight due out November 1, he has the potential to become the 12th person to earn both acting and writing nominations at the Oscars. Scroll through our photo gallery to learn more about the nine single and two double entrants currently on that list.
All 11 stars wrote themselves leading roles. Although none of them won both of these Oscar races, five picked up prizes for their scripts while one – Roberto Benigni – won for his acting. Unlike Eisenberg, a vast majority of his possible predecessors shared their screenplay nominations with other writers.

The world has ended, or so says Momma, played by Halle Berry. She lives with her two sons Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV) and their dog in big wooden house the middle of the woods.
The details of this apocalyptic event are hazy, however Momma repetitively tells her boys that there is an evil out there that can posses you and make you kill your loved ones. This is what had happened to their grandparents and their father and now the trio live in constant fear of the outside world.
The only thing that keeps them safe is the house itself so the only way they can leave is while tied to its foundations on long pieces of rope. If bound to the building they are safe but should that rope break or they stray beyond it, who know what terrible things will happen. That’s...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2024 Toronto Film Festival has gone to The Life of Chuck, first runner-up is Emilia Pérez, and second runner-up is Anora. The Documentary Award goes to The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal, and the Midnight Madness winner is The Substance.
Both runners-up Emilia Pérez and Anora were big winners at Cannes in May (the latter taking the Palme d’Or), but Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck was a TIFF world premiere and a surprise winner of this award.
Tom Hiddleston stars in the film based on King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. Jim Carrey became a significant name in the industry for his slapstick roles. However, apart from his contributions to comedy, the Canadian actor also garnered widespread fame for dramatic roles in films like The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. Sadly, Carrey never got his deserved respect for his serious roles. His role in The Truman Show did not even get an Oscar nod.

Going into the documentary “From Darkness to Light,” most reasonably well-informed movie fans would know three things about “The Day the Clown Cried,” the Jerry Lewis Holocaust movie that is the subject of this doc: It was ahead of its time, it was never finished and it probably wasn’t any good.
Coming out of “From Darkness to Light,” which premiered on Sunday at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, you’d likely know the same three things, but at least you’d have more context and more evidence that Lewis’ legendary but unseen film is indeed a bad movie. There aren’t any real revelations in the doc, just the sad and tangled story of a questionable idea being undermined by creative choices, business conflicts and a comic icon’s determination to bury something that embarrassed him.

The star spoke at a master class at the 81st Venice Film Festival on Sunday on the art and craft of cinema through acting, screenwriting, lighting, scoring and dubbing.
To kick off the conversation, it was noted that Gere celebrated his 75th birthday on Saturday, so the capacity crowd erupted with cheers of “Happy Birthday,” after which he dutifully thanked everyone.
The personal touches continued throughout the master class as the actor was shown a clip from his first film role, Days of Heaven (1978), which he admitted made him “so emotional.” He swiftly pointed out his son, Homer, and asked him to stand up for the audience. “I think I’m only a little bit...

She’s survived xenomorphs, busted ghosts, lived among the gorillas, and co-starred in the top-grossing blockbuster of all time — and soon she’ll have a Golden Lion. Screen icon Sigourney Weaver, whose stately grace and steely will have captivated filmgoers for nearly 50 years, will be awarded the Venice Film Festival‘s top honor for lifetime achievement at the event’s glamorous 81st opening ceremony. But first, the three-time Oscar nominee met the international press in Venice on Wednesday afternoon for a wide-ranging conversation about her career and the art of cinema.
Within the first five minutes of the sit-down, Weaver was brought to tears by a female journalist’s personal thank you for her pioneering performances as strong women characters — most notably, as the heroine Ripley in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic Alien — which shifted perceptions in the industry about the kinds of parts women could play and empowered female viewers everywhere.

Buried and abandoned over 50 years ago, The Day the Clown Cried is a uniquely tragic story. After a series of rights and a media controversy, leading actor, director and re-writer of the film, Jerry Lewis, renounced the project completely and thus, it was never released.
Deadline announced that after being unreleased and unfinished, the infamous The Day the Clown Cried and its script have been rediscovered by the founder of K. Jam Media, Kia Jam. It took time for him to clean several issues up when securing the rights, and his journey that brought him to the original screenplay (penned by Joan OBrien and Charles Denton) was nothing short of interesting: I got approached 14 years ago by somebody I knew, who was a rabbi, Jam told Deadline. The ‘90s are back – also in Naima Mohamud’s upcoming “Halima,” produced by Finland’s It’s Alive Films, behind Oscar entry “Euthanizer,” and No-Office Films.
“It was a wild time. The hair! The clothes! I really wanted to go back to when boybands, Tamagotchis and popper pants were all the rage. And Aqua, the greatest ‘90s pop band in the world, [behind] ‘Barbie Girl’!” enthused the director, who used to be “obsessed” with its singer Lene Nystrøm.
“I tried cutting my own bangs and dyeing my hair with food coloring to rock her hairstyle. It didn’t work, of course, and the following months were agony. I got told off for wasting food coloring my mother needed to make Somali dessert halwa.”
In Mohamud’s partly autobiographical “down-to-earth dramedy about loneliness, childhood and conquering your fears” – currently in development and eyeing a 2025 shoot – it will be Halima’s turn to experience such “heartwarming and humorous” misadventures.
