Upon the revival of Doctor Who in 2005, many longtime fans of the franchise were left scratching their heads as to why the series didnt follow the tradition of showing the regeneration from one Doctor to another. This includes Paul McGann, who portrayed the Eighth Doctor in the 1996 made-for-tv film Doctor Who: The Movie, and was unceremoniously left out of the mix when Christopher Ecclestons Ninth Doctor ushered in the modern era of the series.
In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine (via the official website), McGann revealed that when he first heard the rumblings that a new TV show was in the works that would once more bring the iconic franchise back to the small screen following its cancelation in 1989, he was ready and waiting for a phone call to at least make an appearance so that they could film the regeneration between him and Eccleston. Unfortunately, that call never came,...

“Creed III” has enjoyed exactly the kind of success that MGM and movie theaters were hoping for, blowing by studio expectations to deliver the largest opening weekend that MGM has seen in years outside of the hallowed James Bond series. It also showed that Amazon can do more with MGM than just exploit its library.
Heading into the weekend, pre-release projections had predicted that the third installment in the “Rocky” spinoff series would get an opening of around $40 million, not particularly exceptional but still respectable and higher than the $35.5 million three-day opening of “Creed II” on Thanksgiving weekend in 2018.
But as the weekend progressed, “Creed III” went farther than anyone could have expected. Weekend estimates rose from around $45 million on Friday afternoon to $51 million on Saturday morning, then up to what ended up being its final total of $58.3 million on Sunday morning, combining with a $43.1 million total from its overseas...

With this year’s domestic box office expected to rise to 9 billion, of course the major Hollywood studios are taking Super Bowl Lvii ad spots seriously.
The big game, which last year attracted 112 million viewers, remains an enormous bullhorn when it comes to drawing attention to your tentpole movies — and this year, starting with Disney/Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has a lot of them. So if you’re a studio looking to draw attention and separate your movie from the conveyor belt of events films that are occurring every weekend from late February through September, well then best to pony up a record 7 million for a 30-second spot on the February 12 Fox telecast of the Kansas City Chiefs-Philadelphia Eagles showdown.

As the box office labors through another dry spell, Sony/Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has retaken the No. 1 spot on the charts from Paramount/Spyglass’ “Scream,” earning $14.1 million in its sixth weekend.
Having passed the domestic run of “Black Panther” last weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” now joins the fellow MCU film among the shortlist of films since the turn of the century to earn at least five No. 1 weekends. Such an achievement has become increasingly rare as the rise of home entertainment has made the box office more frontloaded than in the ’80s and ’90s.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” currently ranks fourth on the all-time box office domestic charts with a North American total of $721 million. “Avatar” sits in third with $760.5 million. Globally, the film now stands sixth all-time with $1.69 billion, passing the global run of “Jurassic World” in 2015.

In “Sing 2,” the sequel to Illumination’s animated box office hit, “Sing,” Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and his troupe sneak into the Vegas-like tourist oasis and con their way into mounting “Out of This World,” a Cirque du Soleil-inspired musical space show, climaxing with a surprise appearance by reclusive lion rock star legend, Clay Calloway (Bono).
The third act musical extravaganza represents Illumination’s most ambitious work to date in terms of design, costumes, animation, choreography, playlist, and performance. The theme of breaking artistic barriers was also personal to director Garth Jennings, since the “Sing” sequel marked only his second animated feature.

Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home grossed $31.4 million on Tuesday, off 15% from Monday’s $37.1M at 4,336 locations. All in, Spider-Man: No Way Home counts $328.7 million at the domestic box office through five days, the second-best five-day gross of all time after Avengers: Endgame ($427M) and the highest December five-day gross of all time beating Star Wars: Force Awakens ($325.4M).

Taking an early look at 2022, Gower Street Analytics is projecting global box office to reach $33.2B next year. That would rep a 58% increase on 2021 if the current year stays on track for the London-based firm’s projected approximate $21B. Gower Street estimates 2021 worldwide box office stood at $19.2B as of December 11, repping a roughly 75% increase on 2020.
Gower suggests the industry will need to wait at least until 2023 to see a full return to pre-pandemic global box office levels of over $40B.
The domestic, Chinese and international markets are all poised for improvement in 2022. However, says Gower Street, the most notable gain is expected to be in North America. Currently projected to hit $9.2B in 2022, up from an estimated $4.4B in 2021, that would see it...

Sunday Writethru final with chart: As is typical, the weekend following the Thanksgiving stretch is a downer. That second weekend is lower than the pre-pandemic second weekend takes of some of Disney’s lowest grossing Thanksgiving titles, i.e. The Good Dinosaur ($15.3M) and Tangled ($21.6M), however, it’s a tad higher than the second wide December weekend of The Princess and the Frog which in the lead-up to Christmas did $12.1M in its second frame over Dec. 18-20, 2009. Sunday Am Update: Without Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick in the marketplace, the Thanksgiving box office was much lighter than previous holidays, grossing an estimated $141.3M over 5-days, off 46% from 2019’s pre-pandemic holiday over the same period of time. Two family movies, Disney’s animated Encanto, which banked 52% of its $40.3M 5-day gross from Latino and Hispanic audiences, and Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife which delivered $35.3M in its second weekend over Wednesday-Sunday, were the top destinations for families. Worldwide, Encanto hit its global studio projection with a $70M start.

Feeling bullish about Sing 2, the animated sequel hitting theaters December 22, NBCUniversal and parent company Comcast are using it for their annual Thanksgiving promotion for Xfinity.
Much longer than the usual 30 seconds of most TV commercials, Comcast’s cinematic spots for its flagship broadband and TV brand have become an annual staple. They first appear during NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and get amplified by other synergistic platforms like Today.
Directed by Garth Jennings, the writer and director of the Sing films, the short that debuted during today’s parade coverage is titled “Come Home.” It introduces a new group of anthropomorphized animal characters who are not seen in the films. (Watch it above.)
The holiday season finds most of a dog family at home as a snowstorm hits. Angie, voiced by actress and TV personality Keke Palmer, is the pack’s mother. As a...

Universal Pictures has launched the final trailer for Illumination’s upcoming sequel ‘Sing 2.’
Buster (Oscar® winner Matthew McConaughey) has turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City.
But with no connections, Buster and his cast—including harried mother pig Rosita (Oscar® winner Reese Witherspoon), rocker porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson), earnest gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton), shy elephant Meena (Tori Kelly) and, of course, porcine provocateur Gunter (Nick Kroll)—have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by ruthless mogul wolf Jimmy Crystal (Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale).
In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star lion rock legend Clay Calloway (Bono). Problem is, Buster has never met Clay,...

No, it wasn’t a horrible shared dream that we all suffered through back in September: Chris Pratt is really going to do the voice of Mario Mario in Illumination’s Super Mario movie, even though Mario has had one voice actor for 25 years (Charles Martinet) and he’s very good at saying the three or four things that…...

Buster Moon has a dream: to be the most successful koala in showbiz. In “Sing,” he managed to salvage the run-down venue where his musical theater ambitions might thrive, much to the delight of family audiences. Now, in that toon’s jam-packed “let’s put on a show” sequel, Buster Moon and his menagerie of pigs, primates and other crooning critters head to Redshore City — the Las Vegas-like entertainment capital of their parallel universe, which is basically human in every way except for the fact that there are no humans to be found in it — to launch a massive song-and-dance extravaganza.
If “Sing 2” sounds like a shameless excuse for a bunch of celebrities to perform cover versions of Top 40 hits while animated animals lip-sync the lyrics for our amusement … well, that’s essentially what it is. Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) and friends set out to pitch an...

Comscore this morning reports that the October domestic box office clocked $638M, the highest month to date during the pandemic beating July’s $583.8M.
Seventy-five percent of October’s figure was driven by major studio event pics Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, MGM/United Artists Releasing’s No Time to Die, Universal/Blumhouse/Miramax’s Halloween Kills and Warner Bros./Legendary’s Dune. True, the latter two titles were made available in homes day-and-date which siphoned theatrical ticket sales, but there’s much to celebrate here as both movie studios and exhibition look forward to getting back on track.

During its presentation at CineEurope in Barcelona, Universal celebrated the success of the past weekend’s James Bond pic, No Time To Die, which grossed $121.3M across 54 Uni and MGM markets, setting a new pandemic record as the first film to cross $100M overseas in its opening without China in the mix.
In keeping with the sentiment of gratitude here this week, Uni execs thanked exhibition for its part in helping make winners of such films as F9 and No Time To Die, and for weathering through the last 18 months. Said Niels Swinkels, EVP and MD for Universal Pictures International, “Thank you for standing by us as we had to shift and reshift. Together we are bringing audiences back to theaters.”
The company’s President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, commented that throughout the pandemic, Universal kept its eye on delivering “a diverse and broad lineup to cater to a variety of tastes.

The Emmy Awards are notorious for shocking wins that defy Gold derby odds and best guesswork from top pundits. But the 2021 Creative Arts ceremony instilled a false sense of security in awards-watcher’s forecasts after votes appeared to be united around a select few series. Emmy voters still had some shockers up their sleeves however. Even the clean sweep for Netflix’s “The Crown” didn’t play out as expected. Check out the top seven shocking moments of Emmys 2021, below.
Brett Goldstein fends off co-stars in Comedy Supporting Actor
Keenan Thompson had dominated our odds for the majority of the season, and Bowen Yang swooped in towards the end with a compelling narrative and viral “iceberg” sketch. So it seemed unlikely that Brett Goldstein could prevail, no matter how strong his series “Ted Lasso” looked. After all, he was nominated alongside three other co-stars in this category. How would voters choose their favorite supporting player?...

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.
It was a quiet ceremony for Marvel Studios, which was making its Primetime Emmy awards debut thanks to Disney+’s WandaVision. Though the series didn’t win any hardware Sunday night,...

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).

Let’s start with the comedy side of things: We’ve both had “The Flight Attendant” winning in the directing category. Heading into the opening remarks of CinemaCon on Tuesday morning, Illumination founder and CEO and Despicable Me franchise producer Chris Melendandri gave an impassioned speech about moviegoing and why the big screen is vital. Among his sentiments: Without the big screen, there would be no streaming. The two go hand in-hand, and it’s important for the small screen guys to know that.
Meledandri’s opening remarks (read them in full below) preceded MPAA boss Charles Rivkin’s at the Colosseum Theater here at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Over “The Crown’s” four seasons, the halls of Buckingham Palace have become familiar visual signifiers for both the grandeur and the pressure placed upon the royal family. But in the third episode of this most recent season, “Fairytale,” cinematographer Adriano Goldman and director Benjamin Caron stretched the limits of the show’s visual language to create — and then to destroy — Princess Diana’s (Emma Corrin) fairytale fantasies.
Much of the episode is given over to Diana slowly realizing that, like many princesses stuck in a castle before her, she has fallen into a trap. But Goldman and Caron opened up the ways they shoot their Buckingham Palace sets to show how the demands of the Crown consume everyone on the eve of the fateful marriage.
They force the jaws of the trap open wide with a pre-credits sequence of Diana’s night out with her friends after Charles (Josh O’Connor) proposes to her.

“The show is a character-driven dialogue-lead show and so it’s really important that the sound serves a story but doesn’t get in the way of the story,” explains Emmy-winning supervising sound editor and re-recording sound mixer Lee Walpole. He just earned his fourth career Emmy nomination, this time for his work on season 4 of “The Crown,” which he shares with collaborators Stuart Hilliker, Martin Jensen and Chris Ashworth. “It’s not flashy, it’s not ‘crash bang wallop,” he says. “The show is letting you into a world of opulence and decadence, so we’re trying to achieve that sound across every level,” he says. Watch our exclusive video interview with Walpole above.

In 2017, “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano ended a 22-year dry spell when she became the only the third woman to win the Best Drama Directing Emmy. A woman has not won since, but this year, three have a chance to become the fourth.
Liz Garbus (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Jessica Hobbs (“The Crown”) and Julie Anne Robinson (“Bridgerton”) are up for the honor alongside Steven Canals (“Pose”), Benjamin Caron (“The Crown”) and Jon Favreau (“The Mandalorian”). If Garbus, Hobbs or Robinson wins, they’ll join Morano, Karen Arthur (“Cagney & Lacey,” 1985) and Mimi Leder as the category’s only female champs.
This is the second straight year with three female drama directing nominees. Leder was nominated last year for “The Morning Show” alongside Hobbs for “The Crown” and Lesli Linka Glatter for “Homeland,” but they lost to Andrij Parekh for “Succession.”
