Cinderella’s stepsisters mutilating their feet so they can fit into slippers, a heartbroken mermaid taking her own life, Red Riding Hood unknowingly cannibalizing her grandmother — these and other upsetting details tend to be omitted from modernizations of classic fairy tales. This kind of watering-down, often called “Disneyfication” for obvious reasons, may be seen as a problematic practice, but as it happens, the commercial and sterile variants only make their darker counterparts more effective.
One such case is 1997’s Snow White: A Tale of Terror, a most aberrant fairy tale adaptation.
Fairy tales and suchlike are eternal in show business, yet in and after the 1990s they were especially prolific, due in large part to Disney’s enviable success with the model. And it wasn’t just animated adaptations getting the greenlight either; live-action takes were also popular. However, Michael Cohn’s flesh-and-blood treatment of the always-fashionable “Snow White” story...

Plot: An enchanted kingdom is ruined by its evil Queen (Gal Gadot). Their only hope is a kind-hearted princess named Snow White (Rachel Zegler), whose youth and beauty are coveted by the Queen.
Review: Snow White has to be one of the most ridiculously controversial movies in recent memory. It’s become something of a political hot potato, with its detractors claiming it would be overly “woke” based on some clumsy quotes attributed to the movie’s star. Whatever those quotes might have promised, there’s nothing particularly incendiary about this retelling of the Disney classic, and there’s certainly nothing particularly woke about it, with it hitting most of the same beats as the original. However, that doesn’t mean it’s good either.
Truth be told, none of Disney’s live-action adaptations of their animated classics have been winners, outside of maybe The Jungle Book, with them typically...

Review: The Ugly Stepsister is the gruesome, body horror Cinderella reimagining you never knew you wanted. Given the many variations on the classic tale, it’s incredible to think that we’ve never gotten a hard-r-rated flick in the vein of The Brothers Grimm’s version of the story. Let’s not forget that the take on Cinderella ends with the evil stepsisters mutilating their feet to fit into Cinderella’s slipper. Director Emilie Blichfeldt conjures up a version that...

Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror and drama. Let’s take a look back at 16 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Weaver made her film debut with a walk-on role as Woody Allen‘s girlfriend in “Annie Hall” (1977). Her breakthrough came just two years later for Ridley Scott‘s landmark sci-fi thriller “Alien” (1979). As Ripley, the lone survivor aboard a spacecraft besieged by a snarling, ferocious extra-terrestrial, Weaver broke down barriers for female action stars and helped launch a franchise that led to three sequels: James Cameron‘s “Aliens” (1986), David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Alien: Resurrection” (1997).
“Aliens” brought Weaver her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress, a rarity for the genre. Not to be typecast, she found further success in a variety of roles that didn’t require donning a space helmet.

Known for iconic roles, Sam Neill's horror career is largely overlooked, but his chilling performance in "Omen III" is unforgettable. Neill's ability to bring subtle terror to psychotronic horror films sets him apart from other actors in the genre. Despite underrated performances in cult classics like "Event Horizon," Neill's horror legacy is often overshadowed by his mainstream success.
Although he's one of the most distinctive and respected actors of the past few decades, Sam Neill's horror movie career largely flies under the radar. Like many movie fans, I became familiar with Neill following his starring turn in Steven Spielberg's 1993 blockbuster, Jurassic Park. However, while his performance as paedophobic paleontologist Alan Grant remains a career highlight, it's become increasingly clear that there's more to Neill's resume than running away from dinosaurs.

Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.
It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

One of this week’s most notable new releases is Lionsgate’s big screen horror movie Cobweb, a horror fairy tale of sorts from first time feature film director Samuel Bodin. Bodin’s no stranger to the realm of violent fairy tales for adults; the filmmaker’s direction on Netflix’s Marianne unleashed no shortage of visceral scares unleashed from a fairy tale realm.

Sigourney Weaver's matriarch protects family secrets in the first trailer for The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart. The three-time Academy Award-nominated actor is best known for her roles in blockbuster film franchises like Alien and Avatar. However, Weaver has had equal success on the small screen over the years, with much of it flying under the radar. She has received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations for her performances in the miniseries Snow White: A Tale of Terror, Prayers for Bobby, and Political Animals.
Now, Weaver is returning to the small screen for another miniseries, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, which Prime Video just released the first trailer for. Check it out below:

The idea of retelling placid and gentle children's fairy tales in a bloody, horror milieu is hardly new. Think of a fairy tale or beloved children's classic, and odds are good that someone has already transformed it into a horror movie. Off the top of my head: Neil Jordan made a horror movie out of Little Red Riding Hood with "The Company of Wolves" in 1984. Later, in 1996, filmmaker Matthew Bright brought the same story into a scuzzy modern setting with "Freeway." 1997 saw the release of "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" with Sigourney Weaver as the evil queen.
"The Little Mermaid" was transformed into an awesome 2015 horror musical called "The Lure." Pinocchio starred in "Pinocchio's Revenge." The Gingerbread Man was transformed into "The Gingerdead Man". A quick stroll through the spider-webbed hallways of Tubi might reveal titles like "The Curse of Sleeping Beauty," 1995's "Rumplestiltskin," and multiple films called "The Tooth Fairy.

Rhys Frake-Waterfield's new horror film "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey" takes the toddler-like characters from A.A. Milne's beloved 1926 children's novel, and transforms them into lumbering, human-hating, bloodthirsty serial killers. If you ever wanted to see Christopher Robin's little yellow Pooh bear as Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," then "Blood and Honey" is for you.
The central gag of Frake-Waterfield's film is, of course, the juxtaposition of Milne's childlike innocence with the violent crassness of your average slasher movie. One might ostensibly get a certain lascivious thrill from seeing well-known childhood imagery blended with adult material. A similar approach was used in Danishka Esterhazy's 2019 film "The Banana Splits Movie" which saw the stars of the 1968 children's TV show turned into murderous robots, as well as any number of horror fairy tales.

By now I’m sure you know the formula for this column. I introduce one of our beloved horror icons as a means to steer you toward one of their lesser-known works. Nothing too complicated, but I’ve found it works. This time around, however, I worry that my usual spiel will bury the lede, as I’ve made a profound discovery in the made-for-tv horror fairy tale Snow White: A Tale of Terror, featuring Sigourney Weaver. This movie, ladies and gentlemen, is the silliest horror movie ever made.
I know what you’re thinking: But Bryan, how could you make such a claim in a world where movies like Sleepaway Camp II, Blood Diner, or any variety of wacky ’80s slasher movies exist? Mykie is a self-taught professional beauty and special effects makeup artist based in Los Angeles that is making insane Disney princess horror makeup tutorials on the Glam and Gore YouTube channel. She currently has over 1 million followers via social media that love to see what kind of horrific tutorial pops up next. Mykie is definitely not a one trick pony when it comes to her makeup talents; the gore is often juxtaposed against beauty at which Mykie is equally skilled. Suddenly the name of her YouTube channel, Glam and Gore makes a lot more sense.
For the Disney princess videos, Mykie likes to imagine that something terrifying happened to them as a result of their fairy-tale lives. Her tutorial videos all start with a bit of dramatic music and film work before the unveiling begins. After the initial viewing, a detailed tutorial on how to apply the makeup is shown.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the latest addition to Disney's parade of animated movies heading to the big screen as live-action spectacles. Erin Cressida Wilson (The Girl on the Train) is in negotiations to write the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Released in 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated feature produced by Walt Disney and was a huge success, both critically and financially. Inspired by the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, the film follows Snow White as she hides out from a jealous queen with a small group of Dwarfs in their forest home. The original featured eight songs, including "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh Ho" and "Someday My Prince Will Come." The new version will include new...

Disney is continuing their growing tradition of turning some of their animated classics into live-action movies, by putting a new Snow White project into development. Screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson is in talks to write the screenplay for, which is said to expand both the story and the music from the original Disney cartoon. No director is attached as of yet, but the project already has songwriters lined up for the new music.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have been attached to write the new music. They most recently wrote the songs for director Damien Chazelle's upcoming musical La La Land, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. No details have been given as to how this production will update this story from the original animated fairy tale.

That's me telling Sigourney Weaver some story (presumably about how awesome she is). It's all a blur...
You have to act quickly in these situations as you only get a minute. The event was a party for A Monster Calls in which Sigourney plays the emotionally distant British (!) grandmother of a young boy (Lewis MacDougall) whose mother (Felicity Jones) has cancer. As escape from his life or possibly as solution to it the boy meets regularly with a giant tree monster (voiced by Liam Neeson) who tells him morally ambiguous stories about witches, princes, and apothecaries.
I didn't once mention Ripley because I'm sure Sigourney hears this daily (on the red carpet outside there were people with Aliens posters wanting her to sign them) but took the opportunity to tell her how much I loved her on Broadway in Vanya & Sonya & Masha & Spike.

In the same year as Marvel Studios released their first major crossover, The Avengers, Warner Bros released The Dark Knight Rises, the final chapter in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Batman trilogy, which was firmly grounded in the notion that Bruce Wayne is the world's only superhero.
Nolan's disinterest in the larger DC toybox left Warners a few steps behind Disney and Marvel, especially after the failure of 2010's Jonah Hex and 2011's Green Lantern, the latter of which was intended as the first step into a wider universe.

Who's the fairest of them all? Over the April 22-24 weekend, Universal's live-action fairy tale The Huntsman: Winter's War opened to an abysmal $19.4 million at the U.S. box office, down more than 65 percent from first film in the would-be franchise, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman. The results were more grim than Grimm as elsewhere at the multiplex, Disney's The Jungle Book roared to $60.1 million in its second weekend. Disney's live-action studio celebrated the weekend's victory by staking out five more release dates for its fairy tales and other classic stories like Jungle

Last week, I rewatched Snow White And The Huntsman, and then went back to read my review of the film. I think I liked it more the first time. I found myself impatient with it on a second viewing, and while I still think there is some terrific world-building in it, I just don’t care about the story the film tells. The one thing that it most certainly did not do was make me want to see a second part of that story. None of the characters grabbed me as a viewer, and the story wasn’t left in a place that asked any questions that felt like they needed to be answered. But this is the age of the franchise, and so any story worth telling is obviously worth telling at least twice and hopefully as a trilogy with potential ancillary spin-offs, right? Sure, the original Grimm stories...

Fairytale revisions are still all the rage in Hollywood. Yet another live-action take on Snow White's classic tale has just been picked up by Disney, according to THR. The script — written by Justin Merz — was originally focused on Rose Red, another protagonist from Grimm's Fairytale with no relation to Snow White. Until writer Evan Daugherty got an idea. I know, I know. You're rolling your eyes at the thought. But Daugherty has already tweaked the Snow White story before with Snow White and the Huntsman (which I really liked) and the upcoming The Huntsman: Winter's War (which I'm dying to see). He was also one of the writers on Divergent (another fave) and he's prepping the new Tomb Raider. All of that tells me that he's committed to giving ladies some kickass stories and this new Rose Red adaptation sounds like that's exactly what we're looking at. This time around,...

Disney is adding a live action Snow White tale to its roster - albeit with a bit of a twist...
The week before Snow White And The Huntsman follow-up The Huntsman lands in cinemas from Universal, and we’ve got the news that Disney is going back into the Snow White business.
It’s got a film in the stove called Rose Red, the idea for which originally came from Evan Daugherty, who penned the two Huntsman movies. Justin Merz has taken over scripting duties, and the film will focus on the Grimm fairy tale character of Rose Red. The twist, though, is she’s now Snow White’s estranged sister.
Thus, the Snow White story is set to be retold, with Rose Red coming into the tale as the person who tries to break Snow White’s curse when she eats the poison apple.

After a string of successful live-action fairy tale adaptations such as Maleficent and last year's Cinderella, Disney is exploring yet another iconic character, with a revisionist twist. The Hollywood Reporter reveals the studio has picked up a project entitled Rose Red, which follows the story of Snow White's sister. While fairy tale fans may recognize the Rose Red name, the project will present an entirely new story.
Rose Red is a character who did appear in the original Grimm Brothers' fairy tale, but she was featured in a different adventure separate from the story which the iconic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was inspired by. This new project started as an original script by Justin Merz (The Boxcar Children), which was envisioned as a stand alone movie. Screenwriter Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) came up with a different take described as a "companion piece" that sticks...

Fans of Snow White are not going to pleased. Following on from The Huntsman: Winter’s War’s decision to do away with Kristen Stewart’s Snow White entirely in favor that film's supporting players, we’ve now learned that Disney’s own live-action adaptation will instead primarily revolve around Snow White’s sister, Rose Red, instead of the traditional heroine. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has decided to pick up this project after being hugely impressed by a pitch by Evan Daugherty based on Justin Merz’s script. Usually overshadowed by her more famous sister, the character of Rose Red actually appeared in a number of The Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales. None of these were related to Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs, which Disney iconically brought to life back in 1937. However, while Justin Merz originally wrote a ...

Snow White has a sister, and she's getting a movie.
It's news to us that the Disney Princess has a sister, appropriately named "Rose Red", but apparently she exists in the original Grimm's fairy tales, and she's going to be the main focus in a revisionist telling of the original Snow White story.
We all believed it was Prince Charming that saved Snow White from the Evil Queen's poisonous apple, but inFrozen-like fashion, this film has Snow White being saved by her sister. We're loving the promotion of sisterly bonds, strong women, and women who help another out being incorporated into Disney films lately. Rose Red looks like it'll follow in the steps of turning fairytale conventions on their heads, and giving strong messages to young girls.
We've seen a lot of different takes on the Snow White story, but this one looks to be incredibly promising and will hopefully...

Disney is developing a live-action film based on the story of Snow White’s sister, TheWrap has learned. Justin Merz has written the script based on a pitch by Evan Daughterty, and Tripp Vinson is producing through his Vinson Films banner. Rose Red appeared in the Brothers Grimm fairy tales that had no relation to the classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” which would later inspire the classic 1937 Disney film. Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is a true Hollywood classic. Released for the first time in December 1937. the first full-length Disney feature is a brilliant portrayal of the brothers Grimm’s chilling tale of an evil queen and the beautiful Snow White. The film reflects many of the social conditions of the time; the depression had just passed and songs such as “whistle while you work” were intended to promote a strong work ethic to the young children of America. The budget of the film was a staggering $500,000, around double the cost of an average film, yet the payoff was huge as this was the film that launched Disney’s decades-long domination of the animated features market.
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs arrives on Blu-ray February 2nd in a new two disc set packaged in a slipcover that replicates the artwork beneath. This is not the first release of the film.

As director duo Radhika Rao-Vinay Sapru’s Sanam Teri Kasam nears release, it has been revealed that their next is a musical, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Based on the Grimm Brothers’ classic fairy tale, their film will be set in the hinterlands of India, and against the backdrop of the brass band culture of the North.
As per reports, filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker too has been planning a modern-day take on the popular fairy-tale. But while Vinay and Radhika’s ‘Snow White’ will kick-start in March-April with a known star cast targeting a 2016 release, Gowariker’s film is expected to roll towards the end of the year.
Radhika and Vinay are known for lending a larger-than-life fairy-tale like charm to their works. Be it their music videos, their film Lucky: No Time For Love starring Salman Khan and Sneha Ullal or their superhit songs including Dabangg’s...

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 675 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2015 list, which includes classics such as Douglas Sirk‘s melodrama Imitation of Life, Hal Ashby‘s Being There, and John Frankenheimer‘s Seconds. Perhaps the most popular picks, The Shawshank Redemption, Ghostbusters, Top Gun, and L.A. Confidential were also added. Check out the full list below.

Deep Impact Vs Armageddon is not the only time similar movies have landed around the same time...
Usually, a competing project is poison for a studio. Especially in the era now where a blockbuster costs the national budget of a small country to get out into the world, you don't want to be up against a film with similar subject matter.
Yet this keeps happening, time and time again. Even now, there are two live action Jungle Book movies in various stages of production, for example. And let us not forget when K-9 and Turner And Hooch once did battle...
But how have the movie showdowns of old turned out? And are there any instances where everyone's a winner?
Er, not many as it happens...

I was rather hoping for a bit more from Cinderella, I admit. It was not to be. Kenneth Branagh's live-action staging of the Disney cartoon of the Grimm fairy tale is perfectly competent, and marvelously dull. For those following the flourishing "CGI-fortified fairy tale" sub-genre currently minting doubloons in Hollywood, the gargantuan mess of Maleficent, with its dreadfully on-point subtext, was a worse movie than Cinderella but a more interesting artifact. Snow White and the Huntsman was better overall effort, but with a few too many moving parts to be lastingly compelling. Kenneth Branagh has described the Cinderella story as "sleight of hand," and I'm inclined to agree with him; it's a conjurer's trick, this one, and just as insubstantial. Read our full review of...

"...Stewart, now 24, grew up in L.A.—grew up on the film sets where her parents work behind the camera in Hollywood. As 'Joan Jett' in 'The Runaways' (2010), the translation from chill movie star to chill rock star is seamless and expectedly wonderful.

Into the Woods opened on Broadway in 1987, with the music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim and the book by James Lapine. It is Sondheim’s most performed musical and one of his best known works. The story combines familiar characters from childhood fairy tales such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and the ubiquitous Witch, and explores their journeys to get their wish, as well as the negative consequences of the small dishonesties committed by each character to get what they want. As the witch sings, “Told a little lie/Stole a little gold/Broke a little vow/Did you?/Had to get your prince/Had to get your cow/Had to get your wish/Doesn’t matter how.” As the story unfolds, the traditional dichotomies of good and evil, and our expectations of each character, are shaken.
