When you think of songs written specifically for movies, you probably think of one of two things. First, songs from borderline-or-full-blown musicals that then became huge in their own right, like “Shallow” from A Star Is Born or “The One That I Want” from Grease. The other is god-awful songs about whatever’s happening in some terrible movie that are usually a lowlight of an artist’s catalogue, like Eminem’s “Venom.”
Occasionally, though, a song that was meant to serve as a complement to a movie becomes an unmitigated success in its own right, sometimes even eclipsing the lasting power of the movie itself.
Here are 11 legitimate hit songs you might not realize were written for a movie…

"Cowboy Bebop" is a masterpiece, lightning in a bottle, one of a kind, and every other superlative compliment you can throw its way. The series, produced by anime studio Sunrise as a spaceship toy cash grab and elevated by its creative team (from director Shinichirō Watanabe to composer Yoko Kanno), earns all the fond memories it has created.
The most talked about strengths of the series include Kanno's jazzy musical score, the heartbreaking loneliness of its characters, the impeccable title sequence "Tank!" and the way different episodes dance across different genres. ("Cowboy Bebop" is a title that evokes the series' vibe.) The many American "Cowboy Bebop" fans also fondly recall the show's English dub, which set a new bar for international anime dubbing.
The quiet moments of "Cowboy Bebop" are often the most effective. (The 2021 live-action version from Netflix failed to realize that dialogue is not the show's engine or beating heart.

Personally and professionally, Sam Peckinpah was running on fumes by the time he made 1973’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Years of substance abuse left the director in such fragile health that he spent some days on the production’s Mexico locations filming from a hospital bed, and his dilapidated condition only exacerbated his notoriously combative personality and contributed to the film’s budget and schedule overruns. Infuriated by the escalating expense of the production and set on an arbitrary runtime ceiling, MGM took over editing before Peckinpah could finish the job and released a hastily assembled 106-minute version that hit theaters to indifferent reviews and middling returns. Only in 1988, four years after the director’s death, did the film gain stature as one of his finest works thanks to the release of a rough, never-finalized preview cut prepared by Peckinpah.

"Hunger" by Ross Copperman captures the emotional farewell moment between Elena and Damon in season 6, making it unforgettable. "Daualogn" by Sigur Rs intensifies the emotional drowning scene involving Elena and Matt, creating a hauntingly powerful moment. Kai's karaoke rendition of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan adds a comedic touch to an iconic Vampire Diaries music moment.
One of the reasons The Vampire Diaries remains a beloved show is that the music made for a fantastic Vampire Diaries soundtrack. Inspired by the novels by L.J. Earlier this month, a handful of lucky Bob Dylan fans in Europe stumbled upon a new release entitled 50th Anniversary Collection 1973 in record stores scattered across the continent. The 28-track collection consists of nothing but studio outtakes from the 1973 Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid soundtrack sessions, but it’s sent the Dylan collecting community into a frenzy. Bids are surging past the $500 mark for the few copies available on Ebay — and fans are combing the shelves of European stores in the hopes of finding one.

The historic Power Trip festival kicked off on Friday night (October 6th) in Indio, California. The three-day event features six of the biggest hard rock and heavy metal acts in the world, with two bands performing each night.
Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the Empire Polo Club, the same site where Coachella is held every year. They were greeted by a giant devil-horn-shaped cactus, letting them know that they were in for a weekend of legendary rock music.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden had the honor of playing the first night, with Maiden taking the stage first at 6:55 p.m., about 10 minutes later than the advertised 6:45 set time.
Instead of playing a “greatest hits” set, as could have been expected at an event such as Power Trip, Maiden stuck with their current “Future Past World Tour” setlist, which features the band playing songs predominantly from their latest album,...

The big movie studios opted out of San Diego Comic-Con 2023, meaning the event didn't have all the air sucked up by the next big Marvel Cinematic Universe news for once. One of the most exciting announcements was "Lazarus," a new sci-fi thriller anime from Shinichirō Watanabe and Studio Mappa.
The announcement came with a teaser trailer; Watanabe's animes always have a musical theme and it looks like "Lazarus" will have the same jazzy score as "Bebop" (this time performed by saxophonist Kamasi Washington). Rather than a U.S. import like most anime, "Lazarus" will premiere on Toonami (the production team is aiming to be finished by the end of 2024). The American influence doesn't stop there, for the action scenes will be designed by "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski. Watanabe crafts animated action with unrivaled fluidity, so him and Stahelski working together is a dream team.

Prior to a couple of months ago, Bob Dylan had only played covered four Grateful Dead songs (“Friend of the Devil,” “West L.A. He added two more into the mix (“Truckin'” and “Brokedown Palace”) during a Japanese leg of the Never Ending Tour in April, and during a stop in Barcelona, Spain on Friday night he broke out a beautiful rendition of “Stella Blue” from the Dead’s 1973 LP Wake of the Flood:

It's been over a year since Netflix's live-action adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop" began then ended, but it was clear the project was a misfire long before now. The series was canceled three weeks after premiere, lightning speed even by Netflix standards. It turns out that one of those disappointed was the anime's primary creator, animation director Shinichirō Watanabe (he and his team are collectively credited as the creator "Hajime Yatate").
Before Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" premiered, Watanabe revealed he'd been asked for his input: "I read the initial concept and provided my opinions, but I'm not sure if they will be reflected in the final product." He added that his suggestions being ignored would "leave a bad taste in [his] mouth," but to avoid making the crew's jobs tougher, he would simply hope it "turn[ed] out good." His hopes weren't met.

The Flaming Lips have shared a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay” from the upcoming compilation, Dylan Revisited, which will be released alongside the June issue of the British magazine Uncut.
The Flaming Lips’ cover of “Lay Lady Lay” is at once reverent to the original Nashville Skyline track and willing to take it to characteristically strange places. Though anchored by a simple acoustic strum, frontman Wayne Coyne slathers his vocals in reverb, adding a psychedelic edge to the tune which the Lips continue to toy with throughout the track.

Bob Dylan, whose music career has stretched from the early-1960s folk scene to a critically acclaimed album released earlier this year, has sold his entire song catalog to Universal Music Publishing Group.
The landmark deal covers more than 600 copyrighted works stretching from “Blowin’ In The Wind” to this year’s “Murder Most Foul” from his latest album, Rough and Rowdy Ways.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but multiple press reports pegged the valuation at $300 million. The transaction follows deals for work by Stevie Nicks and a number of other artists in recent months. As streaming continues to transform the music business, song rights for established artists have risen in value and the publishing sector has seen its overall worth approach $4 billion in annual revenue.

“You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone,” Billy Joe Shaver sang in his signature anthem “Live Forever.” The Texas songwriter died October 28th at 81 after suffering a stroke, immediately casting that lyric into stark reality. Just a few days prior, Jerry Jeff Walker died at 78 after a long bout with cancer. Both men were influential songwriters and personalities of the outlaw country movement and their deaths hit especially hard with those they influenced — including Ryan Bingham.

The panel of “The Masked Singer” finally got something right when they guessed rock icon and Poison front man Bret Michaels was hiding inside the Banana costume. On Wednesday night’s episode, the Banana lost in a face-off to the Rhino and was eliminated after the Kitty beat him in the final smackdown. Watch Michaels’ performance of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” by Bob Dylan above.
Within seconds of hearing him sing, guest panelist Sharon Osbourne was certain Michaels was beneath the mask. The talk show host has been friends with the rocker for nearly 35 years and had zero doubt about the Banana’s identity. Regular panelists Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger agreed. Ken Jeong was once again skunked as the only hold out, guessing country singer Brad Paisley was behind the mask.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 3, episode 13 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired April 22 on Fox.
Talk about timing. Rocker Bret Michaels was the latest celebrity to be revealed on “The Masked Singer” — and it happened to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Poison frontman’s brain hemorrhage that left him in intensive care for nearly two weeks.
Michaels, who performed as the Banana on “Masked Singer,” marveled at what he called “the irony, not knowing that these two dates would ever line up on any level, but here it is April 22, and the song selection I chose came down to two songs, and I went with ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’ to sing tonight… Exactly as this show aired is when I was in emergency room, in the operating room, they were operating on my brain. And I’m singing that song.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of “The Masked Singer.”)
The Banana was unpeeled on Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer” to reveal Poison frontman Bret Michaels was the celeb behind the mask. And though the episode aired tonight, it was shot months ago and Michaels, of course, had no way of knowing that it would be his last turn on the Fox singing competition — or that there would be a special, unintended significance behind his final song choice, “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
“This is the irony of my life, are you ready? Tonight, when that airs, will be the 10th anniversary of the survival of my brain hemorrhage,” Michaels told TheWrap Wednesday. “Me having no clue when these shows would air. And literally, 10 years ago, tonight, they were operating on my brain while this show airs.”

The Masked Singer is really gonna keep trying to make “Battle of the Sixes” happen, eh? Ok then.
This week’s episode was the lead-up to next week’s Top 6 showdown, which meant that Banana, Kitty, Frog or Rhino was going to be sent packing at the end of the hour. When the evening was over, Masked Singer voters (if that’s even a thing) weren’t feeling the peel: Banana wound up getting sent home.

Heading into this week’s all-new episode of “The Masked Singer,” Banana was in danger of being peeled from the competition as he had the best odds of being eliminated. This country rocker took the stage alongside Frog, Kitty and Rhino for a pair of face-offs and an epic smackdown, but how did it all play out Wednesday night? And did panelists Robin Thicke, Nicole Scherzinger, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong or guest judge Sharon Osbourne correctly guess this week’s secret identity?

Over the decades, a diverse array of musicians sat in with the Grateful Dead — everyone from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to Ornette Coleman and Daryl Hall and John Oates found themselves on the same stage with the band, attempting to fit in as best they could. But even in light of that list, Clarence Clemons remains one of their more surprising jam pals.

The jukebox musical — or “catalog musical,” as some on Broadway prefer to call it — has been running rampant for more than a decade now, leaving both triumphs and travesties in its wake. But even after we’ve seen the lives of Cher, the Temptations, Carole King, and the Four Seasons transformed into musicals — or the songs of Johnny Cash, the Go-Go’s, and Alanis Morissette used as scores for fictional stories — nothing quite prepares you for Girl From the North Country. Not the first, but certainly the best, musical featuring...

From the beginning of her career, many of Dolly Parton’s musical collaborations have been nothing if not unique, from a 1999 duet with Boy George and Culture Club to the Grammy-winning 2016 remake of “Jolene” with a cappella group Pentatonix. They collaborated creatively through multiple decades, creating cinematic magic on the screen that still resonates with horror fans today. As far as one-two punches go when it comes to directors and composers, Lucio Fulci and Fabio Frizzi pack a huge wallop, and in the years since Fulci's passing in 1996, Frizzi has kept the spirit of Fulci's movies alive through his music, including recent live performances of his scores, two of which will take place on October 29th and the 30th at the New York City's Music Hall of Williamsburg. Ahead of the anticipated shows, I had the honor of catching up with Frizzi for our latest Q&A to talk about the joys of performing live, collaborating with Fulci, The Beyond Composer's Cut, and more.

Who, exactly, was clamoring for a biopic about the origins and backstory of Full House, the ABC sitcom that garnered huge ratings, spawned catchphrases, and introduced the world to the Olsen twins? It's entirely possible that the movie was greenlit in reaction to the news that Fuller House, a continuation of the series focusing on eldest daughter D.J. Tanner (Candace Camerone Bur), will premiere on Netflix in 2016. Or it's possible that, after the success of The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell Story, Lifetime sensed an opportunity to keep the nostalgia-fueled train going.

It's fitting that Clint Eastwood and John Wayne both have the same birthday week. (Wayne, who died in 1979, was born May 26, 1907, while Eastwood turns 85 on May 31). After all, these two all-American actors' careers span the history of that most American of movie genres, the western.
Both iconic actors were top box office draws for decades, both seldom stretched from their familiar personas, and both played macho, conservative cowboy heroes who let their firearms do most of the talking. Each represented one of two very different strains of western, the traditional and the revisionist.

Death was plentiful in the Reagans' cases on Friday's INov. 8) episode of CBS' "Blue Bloods," as signaled by the title of the story: "Drawing Dead," written by Ian Biederman, one of the show's executive producers.
Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Maria (Marisa Ramirez) looked into the murder of a "Wall Street guy" in Tribeca, with no struggle and no theft indicated. Subsequent interrogation revealed the victim had argued with his partners over wanting to bring in an art dealer, someone inexperienced in stockbroking.
Meanwhile, Jamie (Will Estes) and Eddie (Vanessa Ray) responded to a call of shots being fired, leading to a street pursuit of three suspects. As the cops captured two, Jamie heard another shot fired and ran to its location -- where he found Officer James Montero (Elliot Villar) kneeling over a wounded teen, with an angry mob yelling accusations on the order of, 'That cop shot him in the back!

Sitting down for Tuesday's episode of "The Voice" was like seeing a significant other for the first time after a really bad date. We were hesitant, but it's not time to break up yet. Luckily, the coadges changed their tune and chose some people who could actually sing.
There was a business school dropout, a high schooler, a teen mom, a mom mom, a former race car driver and sob stories were actually warranted. It was a shockingly balanced and logical evening on "The Voice." Plus, we learned Cee Lo's feet don't reach the ground in his spinny chair, which was less surprising, but equally entertaining.
And no, onto the audtionees ...

They're out ta get Axl Rose on Twitter. Maybe he pissed off fans one too many times after bailing on last weekend's induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the Guns N' Roses frontman has now found himself the target of a pesky death hoax that's currently spreading like wildfire on the microblogging site. Knockin' on heaven's door he's not! While the hashtag #RIPAxlRose began trending on Twitter late last night (in particular among Brazilian followers, for some strange reason), per Gossip Cop, the ever-reclusive Rose is doing just fine and the rumor of his premature demise is absolutely false. No doubt, that'll be a relief to those still holding out...

Round One
Dartmouth Aires - "Club Can't Handle Me" - While the Aires traditionally do rock songs, they struggled with the lack of chords. The group let Henry rap, which really sounded awkward. As they actually performed, while they started off fun and interesting, the tempo was odd. It was as if there was a train that kept gathering steam and ended off faster than it began. The bridge and ending was strong, but I'm not sure how much that balanced the weaker opening. My Grade: B+
Afro-Blue - "Killing Me Softly" - Staying with the Howard University alum Roberta Flack, they tried to keep elements of the classic instead of the Fugees version. I liked the buildup of the song and the...

In honor of Nevermind's 20th anniversary, we shine the spotlight on some of 1991's other truly great albums.
By James Montgomery

On September 24, Nirvana's Nevermind album turns 20, a milestone that seems rather inconceivable to anyone who actually lived and breathed during the alt-rock era. Still, its birthday will surely be celebrated all over the world, and justifiably so. After all, it's the album that changed everything and, as such, deserves to be mythologized.
Of course, in doing so, most overlook the fact that there was no shortage of other classic albums released in the shadow of Nevermind, from mega-platinum rock blockbusters to quiet-as-it's-kept indie gems, and just about everything in between. In 1991, rock truly rocked, so, in celebration of that fact, we've asked some of today's biggest bands to discuss their favorite albums from that rather amazing year.
We've already paid tribute to classics like Dinosaur Jr.

Some musicians have a distinct advantage when it comes to launching an acting career, bringing celebrity and a fan base to the bargaining table that can add crucial appeal to their early prospects. However, musicians (and we use the term loosely), rappers and singers must also struggle with the preconceived notion that comes with them, to the ruin of many who cannot break free of their tabloid typecasting. But this can also be their greatest asset -- there is nothing audiences love more than watching someone defy expectation, other than perhaps a star, defying expectation. Many have tried, most have failed. Everyone from Michael Jackson to Mos Def, Method Man to Mick Jagger, have dabbled in acting with varying degrees of success. Most recently, Justin Timberlake has come out strong in "The Social Network," but we decided to focus on the early role, the first real performance of some of...

Guns N' Roses' rocker Axl Rose was left red-faced during a recent concert in Bogota, Colombia - after he slipped and fell on stage during the band's show. The group was performing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" at the city's Parque Jaime Duque venue on March 30 when the frontman lost his footing and took a tumble while attempting to run across the stage.
But Rose didn't let the embarrassing accident stop the show - he laughed off the mishap and got back on his feet to complete the performance.
His concert mishap aside, Axl Rose was recently sued by the bosses of a personal management company. He faces $1.8 million lawsuit after reportedly failing to pay 15 per cent of all money Guns N' Roses made during a 2008 world tour. Front Line Management executives, who have filed legal paper at Los Angeles County Superior Court, claimed that Axl Rose hired them to be his personal management team.

The centre of Dublin came to a standstill on Christmas Eve when a group of buskers took to the streets to raise money for charity. For this busking group included pop superstar and U2 frontman Bono. Bono joined Glen Hansard, Damien Rice, Mundy, Liam O'Maonlai and others on Grafton Street to raise money for the Dublin Simon Community, a group that works to prevent homelessness and aid the homeless. Bono sang along to Stand By Me, One, and Knockin' On Heaven's Door, before slipping away while the others carried on. One fan told the local paper The Hot Press: 'That was incredible.
