After his acclaimed performances in films such as LA Confidential, The Proposition, Memento, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Animal Kingdom and The Hurt Locker, you may be surprised that Guy Pearce has just been nominated for an Oscar for the first time: for his turn as the sociopathic industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren in The Brutalist. Or maybe you haven’t noticed Pearce’s Oscars campaign because he keeps rubbishing his own career: he was “shit” in Memento (“I’m bad in a good movie. Fuck!”), worse in Neighbours (“I played the same thing and it fucking drove me nuts”) and has cheerfully owned up to acting in “a bunch...

Kevin Spacey has responded to Guy Pearce’s claims that he had been “targeted” by Spacey while they were filming the 1997 thriller LA Confidential. Spacey has been accused by numerous actors of sexual harassment.
Pearce told The Hollywood Reporter, “I did that thing that you do where you brush it off and go, ‘Ah, that’s nothing. Ah, no, that’s nothing.’ And I did that for five months.”
He continued, “And, really, I was sort of scared of Kevin because he’s quite an aggressive man. He’s extremely charming and brilliant at what he does – really impressive etc. …He holds a room remarkably. But I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question.”
Pearce recounted how he “broke down and sobbed” when he learned about the sexual assault accusations against Spacey amid the #Metoo movement. “I think it really dawned on me the impact that had...

‘I’ve got nothing to hide’ says Spacey, after the Australian actor said he is attempting to be more candid about his former co-star’s alleged behaviour
Kevin Spacey has responded to Guy Pearce’s allegation that the actor “targeted him” during the filming of LA Confidential, telling Pearce to “grow up” and “you are not a victim”.
On Monday, Pearce expanded further on his alleged experiences with Spacey, having previously called him “a handsy guy” in 2018. Spacey, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct, has conceded he made some “clumsy” approaches to men in the past, but never anything illegal.

Guy Pearce is one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation, and he’s currently an Academy Award nominee for his work in The Brutalist.
But his pre-Oscar press tour took a dark turn this week, when Pearce revealed that he was “targeted” by co-star Kevin Spacey on the set of the 1997 film LA Confidential.
In recent years, numerous former colleagues have accused Spacey of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to full-blown assault.

Now, Pearce is detailing prior claims that he made about Spacey being “a handsy guy” during filming.

Pearce first alluded to Spacey’s on-set conduct during a 2018 interview with Australian talk show host Andrew Denton.
“I very much understand that it’s too sensitive a topic to be brushed off.

The Oscar-nominated actor has said he is attempting to be more candid about his former co-star’s alleged behaviour
Guy Pearce, the actor Oscar-nominated for his role in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, has opened up about his experiences when working with Kevin Spacey on 1997 film LA Confidential.
Pearce had previously been oblique about his time with Spacey, who has been dogged by accusations of sexual misconduct, which Spacey has always denied, calling him “a handsy guy” in 2018. But speaking on Hollywood Reporter’s podcast Awards Chatter, the actor said he was now attempting to be franker about his co-star’s alleged behaviour.

Leonard Shelby can try to remember Sammy Jankis all he wants, but Guy Pearce would truly like to forget Memento. Despite Christopher Nolan’s film being a breakout for both the star and its director, Pearce insists he gives an absolutely terrible performance in it, even too bad to forget.
Speaking with The Times, Guy Pearce — who earned his share of acclaim for Memento, although most went to Nolan’s screenplay – admitted that his performance as the tattooed amnesiac is one he genuinely despises and it stands as the chief reason why he hasn’t worked with the director since. “…I’m having an existential crisis. I watched Memento the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m sh*t in that movie. Actors are typically known to be a little hard on themselves, with many avoiding watching their final, cut-together performances at all, but Academy Award nominee Guy Pearce is happy to engage with a little self-evaluation. Well… not exactly happy.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, the Australian actor reflected on his work in Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending crime thriller “Memento” and the “existential crisis” that was brought on from revisiting it in a recent viewing.
“I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m shit in that movie,” Pearce said. “I’d never thought that before, but I did this Q&a of ‘Memento’ earlier this month and decided to actually watch the film again. But while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again?...

It might be one of the most popular films of the early aughts, but “Memento” star Guy Pearce has recently realized he can’t stand his role in the movie. “I watched ‘Memento’ the other day and I’m still depressed. I’m s–t in that movie,” the actor told The Telegraph in an interview published Saturday.
The actor rewatched the movie ahead of a planned Q&a event, he added, and “while it was playing I realized I hate what I did. And so all this stuff about an exec at Warners being why I’ve not worked with Chris again? It came crashing down. I know why I didn’t work with Chris again — it’s because I’m no good in ‘Memento.'”
The comment followed a question about why Pearce was not cast in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film that shortly followed “Memento.” Pearce had...

This British-Australian actor came into the limelight with Curtis Hanson crime-thriller L.A Confidential where he played Detective Sergeant Edmund “Ed” Exley, an intelligent, ruthless, and morally ambitious fellow. While he was brilliant in the role, he was quietly overshadowed by the likes of Kevin Spacey & Russell Crowe. But his most widely known is Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller Memento. Now a cult, Memento chronicled the life of Leonard who is vulnerable and confused because he cannot form new memories. After Memento, Pearce slowly subsided into the league of soul-less B-movies which didn’t do him any good. But after watching a few of his recent performances, I can ensure that Guy Pearce has still got it. He is one of the most underrated actors in the industry. Here are four movies of Guy Pearce that we recommend you watch right now.

Kevin Costner has had a long, fruitful career in Hollywood that spans more than four decades dating back to his early roles in films like "The Big Chill" and "Silverado." That career has included some wildly high highs, including his Best Picture winning Western epic "Dances With Wolves," which is still regarded as one of his best films. "Dances With Wolves" also started Costner's career as a director, kicking off his time behind the camera on a high note. Unfortunately, his follow-up -- which came in the form of 1997's "The Postman" -- didn't go nearly as well.

Russell Crowe has been an A-list actor since the 1990s. He started in minor roles before breaking big in 1997 with LA Confidential. While many of his movies are definitely worth checking out, some films are better than others. A truly outstanding Russell Crowe performance is slightly erratic, yet always captivating. He has the same unfiltered energy as Nicolas Cage and the same raw talent. Yet, for some reason, Crowe hasn't had the same amount of mainstream success.
As an actor, Russell Crowe is defined by a grizzled persona that seems as though it was transported from another time in history. He's often cast in period pieces for this reason, as well as in schlocky action films like Unhinged and fast-paced, hard-hitting blockbusters like Robin Hood or Zack Snyder's Justice League. Of course, Crowe isn't all brawn. As an actor, he can turn on a unique type of heartfelt earnestness...

Russell Crowe has starred in some of the most memorable and acclaimed films of the 90s and early 2000s. Films like Romper Stomper, L.A Confidential, and The Insider made Hollywood take great notice of the actor’s capabilities. After The Insider, Crowe would commit to his biggest movie up to that point with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.

Russell Crowe’s filmography may look a little odd to the average cinephile. From “L.A. Confidential” to “Thor: Love and Thunder,” from winning an Oscar for “Gladiator” to starring in not one but two exorcism films – Crowe seems to have done it all, from high to lowbrow.

“It came out great, but I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” Helgeland recently told Inverse about his spinoff. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead. Guy Pearce has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.
The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace, Tara Morice, Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).
“Inside” is being produced by Marian Macgowan for Macgowan Films and Kate Glover for Never Sleep Pictures, with Thomas M. Wright...

The organization is dedicated to preserving the wild horses of the U.S. and advocating for innovative environmental conservation practices. Nathanson will lead Ran’s rebranding and new initiatives.
In addition to championing horse rewilding and conservation awareness, Ran, formerly known as the Cana Foundation, promotes the inclusion of traditional knowledge through Native American culture. “I am honored and excited to join Rewilding America Now and lead their mission to protect and preserve America’s native landscape and wild horses,” said Nathanson. “This is one of those rare opportunities where we can apply our trade to something with a much higher calling, one that will make a difference.

Christopher Nolan is one of the great filmmakers of our time. Even if you’re not a full-on Nolan fanboy or girl, you have to admit his brand of mixing mind-bending narratives with a genuine reverence for the craft always yields compelling results: Be it historical drama, suspenseful mystery or colossal action-thriller, the man knows how to deliver a picture that gets the adrenaline and the brain working, and that’s a rare feat indeed nowadays.
But it all had to start somewhere, and while we’re not exactly going back to the very beginning, we’re going to highlight the movie that introduced Chris Nolan to the world and kickstarted his incredibly successful career. Don’t quite recall which movie we’re talking about? Don’t worry, we made a note of it – in fact, we’ve got plenty of notes scribbled down about it somewhere – so try your...

There’s been an unfortunately high number of movies throughout history where, no matter how impressive or popular the story is, its release has ultimately been overshadowed by the success of another project. This can happen for a number of different reasons: maybe the two films are too similar in themes and style, or maybe one has been building excitement for a little bit longer. Regardless, many of these movies sadly get lost in the popularity of their competitor and end up as box office failures.
Even when these less popular movies manage to survive the commercial hit, their reputation and legacy is rarely as strong as the movie that overshadowed them. Perhaps two great movies were released around the same time, but one was slightly more talked-about and goes on to sweep all the awards that could’ve feasibly gone to its competitor. Timing is absolutely everything when it comes to releasing movies,...

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey gets a thrill by preying on other men, a prosecutor told jurors during his sexual assault trial Friday in a London courtroom.
Spacey is “a man who does not respect personal boundaries or space, a man who it would seem delights in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable — a sexual bully,” Prosecutor Christine Agnew said in her opening statement. “His preferred method of assault is, it appears, to grab aggressively other men in the crotch.”
The four men who have accused Spacey of sexual assault did not know each other, but all “had the misfortune to attract” his attention, she said.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey walked into a London courtroom Wednesday to face trial on charges of sexually assaulting four men as long as two decades ago.
The actor was dressed in a dark blue suit, light blue shirt and pink tie as he was called by his full name and asked if he was Kevin Spacey Fowler.
“I am,” he said as he stood behind a window in the dock.
Spacey, 63, has pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges including sexual assault, indecent assault and causing a person to engage in sex activity without consent. He could face a prison sentence if convicted.
Spacey nodded and smiled at potential jurors as Justice Mark Wall told them that they may know Spacey by name or have seen his films.

LA Confidential author James Ellroy has ripped the acclaimed film adaptation to pieces.
The writer said he is now free to “disparage” the 1997 crime thriller following director Curtis Hanson’s death in 2016.
Ellroy acknowleged that the movie, which was a box office hit and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, is considered to be high quality by many, but he revealed he does not share these sentimenets.
In fact, he told Los Angeles Times he thinks “it’s turkey of the highest form”.
Ellroy also had harsh words for two of the film’s stars, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger, whose performances he called “impotent”.
Basinger won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film, which also won Best Screenplay for Hanson and Brian Helgeland.

Exclusive: Filming is to begin on May 8 in Toronto on David Cronenberg’s next movie, The Shrouds, which will star Vincent Cassel (La Haine), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and Guy Pearce (Memento).
Kruger has replaced Léa Seydoux on the project (as first noted by blog World Of Reel). Cassel, star of Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method, has been aboard since the project was first revealed last summer.
French icon Cassel will play Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife.

An online film enthusiast has pointed out a surprising link between two history-making Best Actress Oscar-winners.
Michelle Yeoh won her first Academy Award at Sunday night’s ceremony (12 March) for her performance in Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once – the evening’s top-scoring film.
In a historic moment, Yeoh’s success made her the first-ever Asian Best Actress winner.
You can find the full list of 2023 Oscars winners here.
Following Halle Berry’s Best Actress win in 2002 for Monster’s Ball, Yeoh is the second woman of colour to take home the trophy.
As well as sharing this feat, Yeoh and Berry also have another career feat in common – they’ve both been “Bond girls” in Pierce Brosnan Bond films.
Self-described “Oscars enthusiast” Brian Rowe tweeted images of the actors in character in the action franchise films, as well as them with their statuettes.

Guy Pearce has opened up about a “crash-and-burn” breakdown he suffered in 2001, and how a surprise phone call from Nick Cave helped him get his life back on track.
After his break-out role in Aussie soap Neighbours, which he starred in from 1986, Pearce was constantly in work throughout the Nineties, with roles in LA Confidential and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, to name a couple, before he made his most famous movie, 2000’s amnesia thriller Memento.
In a new interview inThe Times Magazine, Pearce discussed how, in 2001, he had a breakdown.
“A big crash and burn,” he said. “It was a confluence of things. The pressure I started to feel about working in America and the whole making hay while the sun shines philosophy. And of course, as an actor, you never usually work back-to-back unless, of course, you’re in a soap.

Film noir enjoyed a revival in the ‘90s, with a wave of films that looked to the cinema and books of the '30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s for inspiration. These included period pieces such as the Coen Brothers’ Miller’s Crossing and modern takes like Basic Instinct, which gave classic noir settings and characters an explicit twist. 1997’s LA Confidential is arguably the most successful of them all. Both a commercial and critical hit, it’s true to its period setting and style, whilst feeling fresher than many of the noir exercises from the decade. This is largely due to the excellent source novel by James Ellroy, although LA Confidential is far from a faithful adaptation. Rather, it plays fast and loose with Ellroy’s novel to great effect, managing to distill its themes into one of the most enjoyable thrillers of the decade.

Welcome back to the Supporting Actress Smackdown.
In this monthly series we pick an Oscar vintage to explore through the lens of actressing at the edges. This episode takes us back 25 years to the landmark year of 1997 when Titanic and "Matt & Ben" were all rage.
The Nominees
Aside from an encore showing for comedic genius Joan Cusack, a surprise nominee in 1988 for Working Girl, the Academy went with all first-timers for 1997's Supporting Actress roster. Not that the actresses were "new" to the scene. There were two "comeback" narratives: Kim Basinger had been a leading lady for over a decade before LA Confidential but she'd taken a three year break from the movies (amidst multiple financial and legal troubles). Meanwhile Gloria Stuart who began in the early days of sound cinema was being celebrated in a way she hadn't been since 1932. The "breakthrough" nominations, were also two-fold. One went to Minnie Driver.
In this monthly series we pick an Oscar vintage to explore through the lens of actressing at the edges. This episode takes us back 25 years to the landmark year of 1997 when Titanic and "Matt & Ben" were all rage.

We're revisiting the 1997 film year in the lead up to the next Supporting Actress Smackdown. Here's Ben Miller on L.A Confidential
For my money, Curtis Hanson's L.A. Confidential is a bonafide masterpiece. Despite nine Oscar nominations and a Best Supporting Actress victory for Kim Basinger, the ample group of fine male actors missed any sort of accolades. It doesn't mean some of them didn't deserve it.
Here are my picks for the 10 best male performances from that film...

June didn't work out exactly as we planned but we delivered most of what we promised (sorry Eleanor Parker -- we'll try to make up for it in July) and it sure ended on a high note with Baz Luhrmann's Elvis.
Here are a dozen of the highlights in case you missed 'em...
• Halfway Mark the best performances and films of the year thus far
• Almost There Emily Blunt - she's a perennial at "almost" snagging an Oscar nod so Cláudio talked The Devil Wears Prada
• Judy Garland @ 100 we covered nine movies from ending with her final film I Could Go On Singing
• Best Shot Fire Island this one was fun to really look at... and not just for thirst reasons
• Ranking International Feature Oscar winners - Juan Carlos has seen them all
• Emma Thompson in Good Luck To You Leo Grande - what a performance!
• Jurassic World Dominion...

The USC Scripter Award, now in its 33rd year, honors films adapted from novels, short stories, comic books, journalism, and other screenplays with both the source material and the adapted screenplay feted. This year’s nominees include three of our five leading contenders for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars — “Nomadland,” “One Night in Miami,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom — as well as seventh-ranked “First Cow” and the telefilm “Bad Education.”
The biggest snubs were “The Father” by Christopher Hampton, which ranks fourth by our odds, and “News of the World” by Paul Greengrass and Luke Davies, which ranks fifth.
The Scripter has forecast 14 of the eventual Oscar winners for Best Adapted Screenplay. Eight of those were in the past decade: “Call Me By Your Name” (2017) “Moonlight” (2016), “The Big Short” (2015), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “Argo” (2012), “The Descendants” (2011), and “The Social Network” (2010).
The other repeat winners were “Slumdog Millionaire...

“Minyan,” an acclaimed tale of sexual and spiritual identity directed by Eric Steel, has sold to Strand Releasing in North America.
The film, starring stage breakout Samuel H. Levine of Broadway and the West End’s “The Inheritance,” played in the official selection at last year’s Berlin International Film Festival and went on to win Outfest’s grand jury prize for U.S. narrative feature.
In Judaism, a minyan refers to the minimum amount of celebrants required for certain religious traditions. Set in 1980s Brighton Beach, the film follows a young Russian Jewish immigrant who is caught up in the tight constraints of his community. He develops a close friendship with his grandfather’s new neighbors — two elderly closeted gay men who open his imagination to the possibilities of love and the realities of loss. In the East Village, he finds a world teeming with the energy of youth,...

The Full Monty’s SAG Awards upset for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture at the 1998 ceremony — beating a murderers’ row that included Good Will Hunting, Titanic, Boogie Nights and L.A. Confidential — capped an unlikely journey from low-budget British comedy to one of the most beloved properties of the 1990s.
1997’s Monty launched a Broadway musical and a hit play that ran in London’s West End from 2014 until the novel coronavirus pandemic forced its theater to shutter last year. It all began when Italian producer Uberto Pasolini approached screenwriter Simon Beaufoy with an idea. “...
