For decades, Brad Pitt has been a Hollywood legend whose lineup of dramatic, romantic, comedic, and unique characters has become iconic and memorable. His early career films allowed him to be more quiet and pensive in his performances, showcasing his acting chops from the start.
Usually, Brad Pitt is in films with a defined genre, from heist capers and epic dramas to romances and action. Yet one particular film was an incredible and unlikely blend of genres that Hollywood hadn't seen yet. Although the silver screen has had its incredible plethora of Westerns and World War films, seeing them in one film is a hard thing to pin down due to the period and culture of cowboys being ships passing in the night.

Quick Links Why Meet Joe Black Failed to Make a Deathly Impression Death Takes a Holiday Was the Original Meets Joe Black Meet Joe Black Wasn't Gothic Enough to Surpass This Classic
Movie remakes aren't exactly a new concept, especially when it comes to supernatural and horror movies. The latter genre typically evokes images of slasher films and similar fare, but Gothic fantasy was once tied quite a bit with the genre. The 1930s saw many films released in this vein, and one of these classics was actually remade into a film with a completely different title.
Meet Joe Black is a notable film featuring Brad Pitt as the actor was truly building himself up as one of Hollywood's biggest names, and it had all the ingredients to become a classic. Contemplating the concept of death amid a torrid romance, the film sadly didn't make as big of an impact as it could have.

Jason Statham is no stranger to working with some seriously talented people, but perhaps the most impressive cast he's ever featured in bizarrely came in his worst-ever movie. With a track record in action franchises like The Fast and the Furious and The Expendables, Statham has arguably forged his reputation by augmenting ensembles. And yet, while these movies have become some of Statham's best-known releases, one oft-forgotten film still reigns supreme as the pinnacle of Jason Statham's screen collaborations.
It speaks to Statham's strengths as a performer that he is capable of shining both as a solo lead and a supporting player in a sprawling cast. Even his early career before he became an action superstar was defined by performances in projects like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch: both movies that rely on extensive personnel and surprise cameos to succeed. After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.
Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

Fans of supernatural romance and Brad Pitt are in for a treat this September. Prime Video is welcoming the two-time Oscar winner's fantastical 1998 film Meet Joe Black, which also stars the legendary Sir Anthony Hopkins, to the platform at the beginning of the month. Pitt takes a devilish turn as the embodiment of death itself who offers a deal to Hopkins's aging media mogul that he can't refuse, bending the rules of the afterlife to give the grim reaper a chance to experience what it means to be human. Although far from a critical darling at a 46% Rotten Tomatoes score and a box office disappointment, it has since become a cult classic for the story it constructs around that initial premise.

2024 has seen the long-awaited revival of Eddie Murphy's role as Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise through Netflix. One of the things viewers were keen to see was the return of the original film's stars. When the movie's trailer dropped, they were elated to see appearances by John Ashton and Judge Reinhold as Taggart and Rosewood. In the case of one of these stars, they also featured in one of the most iconic bounty hunter movies of all time.
Beverly Hills Cop was a true pop culture sensation when it was released back in 1984. From director Martin Brest (Scent of a Woman & Meet Joe Black), the film pulled together a slew of great actors of the comedy genre, with Eddie Murphy leading the cast. Telling the story of a Detroit street cop clashing with the luxurious and snobby culture of upscale Los Angeles, it was a great fish-out-of-water detective story.

Perhaps no film ever was met with the overwhelming anticipation that faced Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in 1999. In fact, reports in 1998 of theater screenings of films such as The Waterboy and Meet Joe Black claimed that patrons purchased tickets to these respective movies to merely watch a preview of The Phantom Menace. So when George Lucas' return to the Star Wars franchise failed to reach the audience's lofty expectations in terms of quality, a sense of disturbance in the force was felt by all fans. On top of that, the sequels only poured salt into the wound, sending the rabid fanbase into flux as a result of a prequel trilogy that not only paled in comparison to the original trilogy, but also undermined the power of the films of the '70s and '80s for some. As it goes with most art, time has been kind...

Brad Pitt is in talks to star in Quentin Tarantino’s 10th and supposedly final film The Movie Critic, even as one scene from the actor’s past continues to leave fans bewildered. The scene in question comes from the 1998 fantasy drama Meet Joe Black, in which Pitt’s character talks in patois in the hospital, fans have pointed out the “absurd” accent. Fans have derided the sequence as “absurd” for decades.
Did The 1998 Fantasy Flop Derail Brad Pitt’s Momentum? Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black
In Meet Joe Black, Brad Pitt plays a manifestation of Death experiencing life in a human form. But there is this scene where he speaks patois, the scene after almost 25 years is still considered as “one of the funniest, most absurd.” Here are a few fan reactions to the scene:
Watched Meet Joe Black the other night and absolutely lost it when Brad Pitt starts speaking patois.

Have you ever wanted to trade places with someone else, even just for an hour? Well, the old adage “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” has spurred an entire comedy movie sub-genre: the sometimes hilarious, plenty times not, body swap trope that sits right up there with buddy movies and road trip plots for recognizable narrative arcs.
The concept has been explored with plenty of non-comedy body swaps; it’s a staple in the horror genre thanks to possessions (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers”), Satanic rituals (“The Skeleton Key”), sacrifices gone wrong (“Jennifer’s Body”), and plain ol’ demons (“The Exorcist”). Then, there’s the surgical body swap that lacks the certain je n’ai sais quoi of mystical intervention that comedies such as the live-action “Scooby Doo” movie and “All of Me” offer.
And doe time travel count as body swapping? As much as we love “13 Going on 30,” “Big,...

Veteran screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard,” died Tuesday at the age of 90, his son-in-law, director Todd Field told The New York Times on Wednesday.
Goldman landed the job of adapting Ken Kesey’s book (along with Lawrence Hauben) after his script for “Shoot the Moon” impressed “Cuckoo’s Nest” director Miloš Forman.
Danny DeVito, who had a small role in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” told TheWrap, “Working with Bo was a dream. It was an honor knowing him.”
After winning a second Oscar for “Melvin and Howard,” he became one of the few screenwriters — along with Francis Ford Coppola and Billy Wilder — to take home Academy Awards for both original and adapted screenplay. He was nominated a third time for his script for Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman.”

Martin Brest directed Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Scent of a Woman, and Meet Joe Black, but his last movie was such a flop that it brought his career to a grinding halt — Of course, I’m talking about Gigli.
Gigli was a romantic comedy crime movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. As the pair were romantically involved at the time, the movie generated an enormous amount of interest but it wound up becoming a box-office bomb that some consider to be one of the worst movies ever made. Woof. The failure of Gigli affected Martin Brest so much that he told Variety he can’t even bring himself to say its name.

Gigli director Martin Brest reflects on the infamous bomb and the effect it had on his career. Released in 2003, the romantic crime comedy stars Ben Affleck as a bumbling low-ranking mobster and Jennifer Lopez as a tough, seductive female enforcer who are tasked with kidnaping the mentally challenged younger brother of a federal prosecutor. Gigli was heavily panned by critics, became one of the biggest box office bombs in history, and is now widely considered one of the worst movies ever made.
In a new interview with Variety two decades after its original release, Brest reflects on his infamous box office bomb Gigli. To this day, the subject remains a sore spot for the director, who still can't say the title and refers to it as "the G movie." Brest also opens up about all the studio interference in the film which made the final product unrecognizable to him, though...

Ascending the driveway of a sprawling home in the Hollywood Hills for a face-to-face interview with Martin Brest, the legendary — and legendarily reclusive — director of “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” it was tough not to immediately think of Xanadu, the protective enclave Charles Foster Kane retired to at the end of “Citizen Kane.” It seems like a fitting place for a former prince of the movie business to spend exile. Upon arrival, I quickly discover that the impeccably manicured property doesn’t, in fact, belong to Brest but to an artist friend, as does the lumbering, pitch-black Saint Bernard watching benevolently over our poolside conversation about the filmmaker’s career. By all accounts (most of all his own), that career came to a fiery end because of “Gigli,” but Brest soon explains how he made peace with the cataclysmic flop — even if he still can’t bear to mention it by name.

Brad Pitt is easily one of the most famous and well-regarded movie stars on the planet. He is known for his work in iconic movies like The Ocean's trilogy, Thelma and Louise, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Se7en, to name a few. He recently won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. His acting prowess, his star power to guarantee a box office hit, his engaging off-screen romances, and his irresistible looks earned him the People's Sexiest Man Alive title twice. Yet, while these factors are a discernible formula for Hollywood success, one thing that remains a topic of amusement, for some wonder, is the constant snacking by the characters he plays.
Update June 12, 2023: This article has been updated by Mona Bassil with even more details and analysis on why Brad Pitt is always snacking in movies.

With over 100 acting credits to his name, many of which are bonafide legendary performances, Anthony Hopkins has proven himself time and again as one of the best actors of his generation, and possibly of all time. After graduating from London's famed Royal Academy of Dramatic in 1963, Hopkins began his career on the stage, tackling the bard, as well as classic and modern plays at the Royal Court Theatre and The Old Vic. He also regularly appeared on British television, taking on episodic guest roles in shows like "The Man in Room 17" and "Department S."
In 1968's "The Lion in Winter, " Hopkins had his cinematic breakout role as Richard the Lionheart. Often remembered for the best actress tie between Katharine Hepburn (as Eleanor of Aquitaine) and Barbra Streisand (for "Funny Girl") at the Academy Awards, "The Lion in Winter" saw Hopkins more than hold his own against stalwarts Hepburn and Peter O'Toole.

In an alternate universe, the 1999 blockbuster The Mummy would have been fronted by Tom Cruise instead of Brendan Fraser - just how different would it have been? Cruise has become so closely linked with action movies and performing outrageous stunts, it's easy to forget he once jumped around many different genres. From Oscar-winning dramas (Rain Man) to harrowing biopics (Born On The Fourth Of July) or legal thrillers (The Firm), the actor packed a lot of variety into his filmography. Arguably the film that changed the course of Tom Cruise's career was 2000's Mission: Impossible II, which marked his transformation into a full-fledged action star.
A sliding doors moment for the actor was 1999's The Mummy, where he was approached to play dashing hero Rick O'Connell. It would have been fascinating to see Cruise step into an Indiana Jones-inspired hero, but his all-consuming schedule on Eyes Wide Shut -...

Alright everyone, we’ve got all the spookies of October out of our system. Time to turn our eye to Hulu’s list of new releases for November 2022 to celebrate a new fall tradition of…hunky male dancers?
That’s right, Hulu’s biggest original title for November 2022 is Welcome to Chippendales on Nov. 22. This limited series stars Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the real life founder of the original Chippendales club of exotic male dancers. After hits like The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, Hulu likely has high hopes for this one.
The other big original series of note this month is FX’s Fleishman is in Trouble on Nov. 17. This is based on a 2019 novel of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as the titular Toby Fleischman in crisis. Before that, Hulu is teaming up with ABC for some true crime docuseries like Where is Private Dulaney?...

In February of this year Hulu unleashed the true crime limited series “Pam & Tommy.” The Emmy-nominated series prompted audiences to look at the nature of celebrity culture, misogyny, and complicity in the wake of the infamous 1990s sex tape that shaped the internet. This month Robert Siegel, one-half of the creative team that brought “Pam & Tommy” to screens, returns with a similar true-life story: “Welcome to Chippendales.”
“Welcome to Chippendales” follows Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s (Kumail Nanjiani) rise and fall in the adult entertainment industry. Matt Shakman directs the series, with Nanjiani, his wife Emily V. Gordon, co-showrunner and writer Siegel, co-showrunner Jenni Konner, and writer Rajiv Joseph among the executive producers.
Per the official synopsis, the sprawling true crime saga “Welcome to Chippendales” tells the outrageous true story of Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire. The series...

If the on-and-off-and-[big pause!]-on-again love story of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck were a dramatic television series, the fact that it has now been relaunched with the two of them getting married over the weekend in Las Vegas is simply beyond perfect. It’s like the new season of some paparazzi-movie-star version of “And Just Like That” kicking off in that overly on-the-nose way that is part of what makes that show such delectable comfort food. But then, who would expect anything less from Ben and J.Lo, the first brand-name celebrity couple to be fused, by us, into one name? Ah, Bennifer! The very sound of it can provoke a swoon of nostalgia for the early 2000s, when these two ruled the tabloids as no one had before. Overnight, they became the Liz and Dick of the new over-the-top, all-voyeurism-all-the-time, amusing-ourselves-to-death 21st-century gossip culture.
And once we, led by them,...

The 94th Oscars will be held March 27, with an in-person ceremony at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre that will air live on ABC. Last month, the Academy announced that Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes would be hosting the big night.
In Tuesday’s image, Hall, Schumer and Sykes are seen sitting in a movie theater with their hands held high. The words “Movie lovers unite” sit above the Oscars’ logo.
In addition to the Oscars hosts, previously announced awards presenters include Simu Liu, Rami Malek, Zoë Kravitz, Lily James, Lady Gaga, Youn Yuh-jung, Rosie Perez and Chris Rock.
The films leading Oscar nominations are “The Power of the Dog” and “Dune,” with 12 and 10 nods, respectively. “Belfast” and “West Side Story” each received seven nominations.

Legendary actor Sir Anthony Hopkins is celebrating 45 years of sobriety with a New Year's video message posted for his fans online. On Tuesday, the 82-year-old took to Instagram to mark the occasion, looking back at his road to recovery nearly five decades later. In the hope that his story may help inspire others who've struggled with addiction, Hopkins explains in the video how he came to stop drinking and how he found a new lease on life.
"Hello everyone. Good morning. Well, New Year is coming. It's been a tough year, full of grief and sadness for many, many, many people. But 45 years ago today, I had a wakeup call. I was heading toward disaster, drinking myself to death. I'm not preaching, but, I got a message. A little thought that said, 'Do you want to live or die?' I said, 'I want to live.' And suddenly, the relief came,...

Exclusive: Cameras are rolling again on Sky’s Ancient Rome series Domina, marking the broadcaster’s largest-scale production to get back underway to date.
Cast and crew have returned to set at historic studios Cinecitta in Italian capital Rome following several weeks of pre-production work after the country’s lockdown was eased. The show is led by Kasia Smutniak (Dolittle), Liam Cunningham (Game Of Thrones) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).
The production is employing a variety of virus preventative measures including distancing on set, making sure everyone completes safety training prior to accessing the site, and creating dedicated pools of crew and actors, with closed sets when possible. Sky Studios CEO Gary Davey recently said the company was also working with producers to create virus-related contingency in the event of further lockdowns.
As Deadline reported last month, Sky is edging closer to being back underway on a number of big-ticket shows.

Ronald Schwary, who won an Oscar as the producer of Ordinary People and whose other major film successes include A Soldier’s Story, Absence of Malice, Scent of a Woman and Tootsie, has died. He was 76. He passed away Thursday in West Hollywood, according to his sons.
No cause of death was provided, but reports indicate Schwary had struggled with a rare neurological autonomic disorder.
Schwary was the producer on six Sydney Pollack-directed films: The Electric Horseman (1979) and Havana (1990), with Robert Redford; Absence of Malice (1981), starring Paul Newman; Best Picture nominee Tootsie (1982), with Dustin Hoffman; Sabrina (1995), featuring Harrison Ford, and Random Hearts (1999), also starring Ford.
Even though the films were nominated for Best Picture, Schwary did not receive a nomination for either Tootsie or Scent of a Woman or because he was not credited as “Producer.”
On Tootsie, there was a dispute between Columbia and the production regarding the number of credited producers.

Comcast and NBCUniversal are pushing Peacock out of the nest starting Wednesday, April 15, promising to unfurl a rich plume of 15,000-plus hours of streaming content, first for the cable giant’s own TV and internet customers.
Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.
So what’s on the menu? Peacock will include live and on-demand content across current and past TV shows, movies, news, and late night programming, with some live sports once they resume post-pandemic. Most of...

March sees the beginning of one of TV's more interesting experiment in 2020. Hulu's new releases for March 2020 are highlighted by the launch of the torturously-named "FX on Hulu" in which certain FX shows will premiere exclusively on Hulu.
Yes, when Disney set out up the entertainment industry, it gained more brands than it knew what to do with. And that's how you get stuff like FX on Hulu. The streaming/cable hybrid begins in earnest in March with two series, Alex Garland's sci-fi Devs and the weird Lil Dickey comedy Dave. More FX on Hulu is set to arrive in April as well.
Hulu's only $5.99/month now, grab the deal here!

Hulu is providing some action-packed options next month for those looking for a switch-up on holiday cheer.
The streaming service will debut “Reprisal,” a hyper-noir story that follows a relentless femme fatale (Abigail Spencer) who, after being left for dead, sets out to take revenge against her brother and his bombastic gang of gearheads. It also launches Season 3 of “Marvel’s Runaways” on Dec. 13. If that wasn’t enough, several movies from the “Fast & Furious” franchise are hitting Hulu, plus both “Kill Bill: Volume 1” and “Kill Bill: Volume 2.”
Those dedicated to consuming holiday-only content can watch NBC’s “Holidays With the Houghs” with Julianne and Derek Hough, a song-and-dance performance show featuring special guest artist performances. Ellen DeGeneres will also be giving gifts with the help of celebrity friends on her “Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways” special.

Exclusive: Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) and Iain Glen (Game Of Thrones) have joined Mackenzie Foy (Interstellar) and Oscar-winner Kate Winslet in Constantin and Jb Pictures’ movie Black Beauty.
Ashley Avis (Adolescence) has written the screenplay and will direct the contemporary adaptation of English author Anna Sewell’s classic 19th century novel. Cameras roll this week in and around Cape Town, South Africa.
Mister Smith Entertainment is handling international sales on the modern-day reimagining of the story in which Black Beauty (voiced by Winslet) is a wild horse born free in the American west. As she is rounded up and taken away from her family, her story intertwines with that of a teenager, ‘Jo Green’ (Foy), similarly grieving over the loss of her parents. Brad Pitt appears to have added a new tattoo to his collection — and it’s located near other very meaningful ink.
On Tuesday, the actor, 55, was photographed arriving in Italy ahead of the Venice International Film Festival. Keeping things casual, Pitt wore a T-shirt, jacket and newsboy cap.
Beneath his T-shirt’s sleeve, Pitt debuted his new inner bicep tattoo of a man’s silhouette standing over his shadow.
The new mysterious design is positioned next to a quote from a poem by Rumi that reads, “There exists a field, beyond all notions of right and wrong. I will meet...

Martin Brest’s 1998 drama “Meet Joe Black” was a box office bomb in the U.S. with a $44 million gross on a $90 million production budget, but 21 years later it’s officially become a viral sensation. A clip from the movie resurfaced on Twitter this week featuring the film’s most ludicrous moment, a car accident scene in which Brad Pitt’s character gets bounced in the air between two moving vehicles, and it’s currently earned over 23,000 shares and nearly 90,000 likes. Only in the age of social media would “Meet Joe Black” find relevancy over two decades after its release.
“Meet Joe Black” was distributed by Universal Pictures and was loosely based on the 1934 classic “Death Takes a Holiday.” The scene in question occurs after the first encounter between Claire Forlani’s Dr. Susan Parrish and Pitt’s unnamed man. The two characters meet in a coffee shop and have instant chemistry,...
