Jaye Davidson was not a professional actor but a fashion designer in London when he was discovered at a party, which had led to his casting and Oscar-nominated performance in The Crying Game (1992). His dislike of the attention that he received after that movie made him reluctant to take the role of Ra in this film. He didn't want to just turn the offer down, so he made what he expected to be an unacceptable demand of $1 million. This was accepted, and he appeared, but he has virtually quit acting after this performance (save for one TV movie and a short film), and went back to being a fashion assistant.

Goofs
The crew is using a satellite receiver when on the other world. A receiver needs a satellite in orbit to relay a signal. They could not have sent up a satellite. And they could not have been communicating with earth.

a new classic

Stargate the movie :- superb atmosphreric music, great special effects, excellent cast, intriguing story but - not surprised it launched a successful TV series which has run and run. I cant believe there are so called sci fi fans out there who didn't like it - must be intellectuals!!! I still enjoy the film now 1o years later although disappointed they never made a sequel as it was set up for one. Never really liked the ending - should have included the return to earth. The TV series has moved the story along nicely - even changes to the cast have worked well and i particularly enjoy the dry humour of the TV series.
