Did Rekha and Kajol challenge Bollywood standards with a photoshoot? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Kajol, along with Rekha, carve out a significant space for themselves in India’s film industry with their larger-than-life personalities and film careers. However, in 1996, the two leading ladies found themselves smack in the midst of a controversy when they featured in a sultry photoshoot that divided the industry and fans alike.
Rekha was an established superstar at the time and Kajol was basking in the glory of the 1993 blockbuster Baazigar. While both of these divas did not get the chance to act together, they eventually did join hands for a daring photoshoot for a leading entertainment magazine.
The photoshoot had the Kajol and Rekha sharing a single oversized off-shoulder sweater which was used to cover both their upper bodies. Today, that image can be considered tame, however it was bold and unconventional for its time in...

In this special feature for Valentine’s Day Subhash K Jha reveals who he thinks are the 10 most romantic on-screen couples of all time.
1. Raj Kapoor-Nargis: They did a number of notable films together, the most celebrated among them being Awara. The sizzling chemistry between them set the screen on fire. While later in the history of Bollywood coupling, real-life jodis got bland and boring, Raj-Nargis continued to enthrall audiences until the bitter end…Their bitter end when they called off their relationship. Nargis’s last shot with Raj Kapoor was in Jagte Raho, where in the song ‘Jaago mohan pyare’, she poured water into the parched Kapoor’s mouth.
2. Dilip Kumar-Madhubala: Their real-life chemistry spilled into Mughal-e-Azam, creating the most amazing chemistry. Though they did other films together, including the very thought-provoking Amar, their togetherness continues to be celebrated through this all-time classic.

Has Aditya Chopra made a single great film in his career so far? Even Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, is it deserving of the popularity it has wrangled? We haven’t seen Aditya Chopra direct a truly outstanding film since forever. Mohabbatein had come five years after Ddlj. And Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which this writer considers Adi Chopra’s finest, came eight years after Mohabbatein.
At 3 hours 36 minutes and with two intervals for much-needed respite, Mohabbatein is a slog. There is no other way to describe this overblown exhausting and pointless campus confectionary . Set in an imaginary boarding school named Gurukul (how kul is that!) Mohabbatein had Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan crossing swords over Aishwarya Rai who was so fatigued by the blistering bickering between the two men in her life, that she simply jumped off the nearest balcony, only to return as a ghost singing Lataji...

Indian marriages go beyond individual assertions of love to include the jostling familial structures of acceptance and refusal. Then there’s the pervasive influence of Bollywood. Bollywood and Indian culture are so enmeshed the two invariably cast themselves against identity and what celebration of oneself may resemble. The yarn of resistance to private desire gets scrambled furthermore once queerness enters the fold. Roshan Sethi’s new film, “A Nice Indian Boy,” unravels this twine, weaving between the modest and spectacular.
Naveen has almost reclined into accepting he, being gay, may never get to have his own big, fat Indian wedding. He’s lonely, terribly tongue-tied at the slightest sight of any probable romantic connection. He has built all these guardrails around him, nervous to admit his desire. As reserved as he is about expressing his feelings, a photographer who instantly captures his heart, Jay is unabashed in his declarations. The...

Stalking has been treated as a normal part of romance since before movies were even a thing. Even though Sholay is a classic, the basis of Veeru and Basanti’s romantic subplot is stalking, which borders on sexual harassment. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is considered a classic, with many idolizing Raj and Simran’s relationship as the epitome of romance, but the couple got together because of Raj’s not-so-subtle art of stalking. Bachna Ae Haseeno repurposed this trope and tried to improve on things by making this new-age Raj apologize for his sins. Tere Naam and Kabir Singh upended any progress that Hindi cinema could’ve made by treating stalking and physical abuse as the cornerstones of romance. Then there were atrocities like Saawariya, Raanjhanaa, R… Rajkumar, and Love Aaj Kal (2020) that went on to define what glorification of problematic stereotypes actually means. Now, I assumed that Bollywood had...

Indian movies, especially after the ‘90s, have been lambasted and celebrated for setting unrealistic expectations when it comes to romance while distorting the very definition of love. Yes, Shah Rukh Khan is lauded for his romantic films, but one of his most popular ventures to date, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, glorified stalking and set a really bad precedent. Thalapathy Vijay’s hugely popular Kushi was chock-full of problematic stuff like navel-gazing and blatant sexism. Allu Arjun’s Aarya normalized the treatment of girls like they are trophies who are supposed to be won by men. After that, stuff like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Raja Rani, Arjun Reddy, and Animal gained popularity, and heterosexual romance sort of went into the gutter and has yet to see a positive resurgence. While I was here thinking that things were bad in terms of romantic dramas in India, South Africa came...

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
With all due respect to my colleagues, I feel crazy talking about movie musicals at work.
Every year since I’ve been a full time entertainment reporter, Disney has released an underwhelming live-action version of one of its delightful animated musicals. I witnessed the hype and joy surrounding Jon M. Chu’s “In the Heights” and tepid reception for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” and continue to live in uncertainty about whether or not there will be a third “Mamma Mia!” film (please!). These days, it seems like every movie musical is anticipated with more than a healthy dose of fear, in case it struggles to recapture the magic of on-screen song-and-dance that was once so easy for this industry.

The prize catch of the title isn’t exactly who you might expect in “A Nice Indian Boy,” a romantic comedy that brings a welcome queer angle to that substantial subgenre of love stories tangled up in Indian social mores and cross-generational family politics. In many such films, Naveen (Karan Soni) would be the most desirable of matches for a female protagonist: good-looking, well-spoken and a working doctor. That he’s gay puts him in the less traditionally masculine role of the one seeking a suitor; that his “nice Indian boy” is in fact Jay (Jonathan Groff), a white man raised in Naveen’s culture, is the more complicating factor in director Roshan Sethi’s bright, big-hearted if overly tidy third feature.
Still, Sethi and screenwriters Eric Randall — adapting a stage play by Madhuri Shekar — aren’t out to subvert every trope and tradition in the book. From its meet-cute...

Jonathan Groff singing Bollywood tunes is the centerpiece of “A Nice Indian Boy,” a groundbreaking gay rom-com that’s heating up the BFI London Film Festival.
Director Roshan Sethi and stars Groff and Karan Soni (the “Deadpool” franchise) are challenging Hollywood norms with their cross-cultural love story, which debuted at SXSW. It aims to bring a fresh perspective to both LGBTQ+ and South Asian representation on screen.
The genesis of the project traces back to 2019, when Levantine Films optioned Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name and Eric Randall adapted it as a screenplay. Sethi came aboard in 2021 after the producers saw his previous film “7 Days.” He then approached his real-life partner Soni to co-star. Groff signed on after watching “7 Days.”

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, known for his charismatic screen presence and shedding his shirt for both action and romantic roles over his three-decade career, is opening up about his motivation, the occasional lack of it, and what sustains his passion for film.
Addressing what he describes as the “generational change” that has happened in Indian cinema, Khan said that the thrills that audiences get at the movies are now “not an adrenaline rush, but an emotional rush. It has to keep on happening.”
The iconic actor, who has starred in 65 films, recently received a career achievement award at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland and also delivered a masterclass at the festival. Khan’s breakout roles — the antagonist in “Darr” (1993) and the lead in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (1996), which catapulted him to superstardom — were both filmed in Switzerland, so the award marked a “full circle” moment for him.
Addressing what he describes as the “generational change” that has happened in Indian cinema, Khan said that the thrills that audiences get at the movies are now “not an adrenaline rush, but an emotional rush. It has to keep on happening.”

The first time Shah Rukh Khan worked with Yash Chopra in a Yrf movie was in 1993 for Darr. She was a part of the United Film Producers Talent Hunt, which she went on to win, where her co-finalist happened to be the first superstar of Hindi cinema, Rajesh Khanna.

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.
Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.
This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni) is the one planning to bring home a nice Indian boy, which is probably not what all those aunties were picturing. But “A Nice Indian Boy” delights in defying expectations,...

Fighter Box Office Updates After 32 Days ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
It was a fair fifth weekend for Fighter as 2 crores* more came in. While Cinema Lovers Day’s offer on Friday helped propel the collections to an extent, there was stability on Saturday, where the balancing factor came in between increased ticket prices and reduced footfalls. Further to that though, there was an expected jump in collections all over, as a result of which the overall weekend came to being decent.
The film now stands at 212 crores*, and in the process, it has crossed Bharat’s lifetime of 211.07 crores. The next in line is Dunki, which was the last big grosser, and the Shah Rukh Khan starrer had collected 219 crores. Fighter may find itself a few crores short, but the fact still remains that the film has been acknowledged for what it stands for. This one did deserve to enter the 300 Crore Club and,...

Shah Rukh Khan – Kajol Box Office Battle With Ajay Devgn & Kajol’s Box Office Has Surprising Result! ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Bollywood fans and their affection towards certain on-screen pairs has been phenomenal. Be it the greatest pair of all time – Raj Kapoor & Nargis or Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. Or be it the greatest pair of the 90s, Shah Rukh Khan & Kajol, or the one film wonder – Salman Khan & Aishwarya Rai. Be it today’s best, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, or Varun Dhawan & Alia Bhatt. Be it the unconventional pair of Ajay Devgn & Tabu or the short-lived pair of Hrithik Roshan & Kareena Kapoor Khan. All of them are usually compared with their real-life couples, and the ones who have borne the brunt of this unfair comparison throughout their careers have been Ajay Devgn & Kajol.
The on-screen turned off-screen couple and their chemistry have always been pitted against Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Box Office – Fighter tops 2 crores mark on Sunday, its 25th day in theatres(Photo Credit –Facebook)
Fighter has completed 25 days at the box office, and on its 25th day, it managed to top the 2 crores mark all over again. The film still has some steam left in it, and hence, footfalls are being generated at some properties.
The showcasing is just apt for the film. While it’s surrounded by countless romantic films now, courtesy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya as well as a re-release of quite a few romantic films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Jab We Met, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil Toh Paagal Hai, Mohabbatein and more, it’s the only action film playing.
On Sunday, the film brought in 2 crores*, which is good since it is double of what it had brought in on Friday. When a trend like this takes place, weekdays are assured to be stable as well.
