When a Hollywood actor is big and making lots of movies, it kind of feels like they'll stick around forever. There are plenty who do, but so often a familiar face will enjoy a hot streak before vanishing from the limelight. Back in the '90s we had a number of such actors. Alicia Silverstone, Meg Ryan, and Bridget Fonda all hit their peak during the decade and became household names thanks to their hits. And then they were gone, either suffering from a string of poor choices (Silverstone), taking a break from acting (Ryan), or retiring altogether (Fonda). Another Hollywood star who enjoyed her heyday in the '90s before vacating our multiplexes was Rene Russo. But why exactly did she disappear from Hollywood?
Russo was one of several models who crossed over into acting during the '90s. Some made a big splash in their breakthrough roles, like...

When it comes to renowned director Doug Liman, no one can question his bold choices and visionary take on filmmaking. Even when he ventured into the dark side of American patriotism with the Tom Cruise-led American Made (2017), Liman surprisingly managed to justify his opinion behind the narrative that many dubbed as “anti-Top Gun”.

Despite highlighting the questionable ethics of U.S. foreign policy during the 1980s and how the CIA dealt with things, Doug Liman called his movie extremely patriotic and quite American in its essence. Further, challenging the conventional notions of American heroism, Liman admitted that this movie was deeply personal on many levels.

Leah Remini has broken her silence around the death of Mike Rinder, a Scientology whistleblower who earned an Emmy for exposing the secret organization, and recently died.
“On Sunday, we lost a giant, and I lost a man who was more than a friend—he was family,” Remini said in an Instagram post on Tuesday. Remini and Rinder co-hosted the A&e docuseries Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath and the podcast Scientology: Fair Game as they exposed the organization.
The actress called Rinder her “trusted partner” in Scientology, to whom she turned when she herself left the secretive group in 2013.
“Mike saved my life and the life of my daughter and he stood by me through battles that felt insurmountable. I haven’t come to terms with the reality that I can’t call him and hear his voice anymore. I am shattered in ways I never thought possible. I...

Picture the mid-80s. The United States are halfway through the Reagan era and Sylvester Stallone has just set his sights on Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Beverly Hills Cop. Hellbent on starring in a crime thriller, the Rambo and Rocky veteran goes so far as to rewrite the script in order to replace most of the humor with even more extravagant action scenes. Rather unsurprisingly, Paramount ends up rejecting Stallone’s costly version of the film – a decision that would ripple throughout time and lead to the production of one of the most infamous B-movies ever made.
Often referred to as the dumb man’s Dirty Harry, 1986’s Cobra is mostly remembered as a humorous misstep in Stallone’s vast filmography. However, with modern cinema’s disappointing (albeit understandable) lack of over-the-top crime thrillers that pit rogue cops against sensationalized threats pulled directly rom the headlines, I think this is the...

Death Walks on High Heels (1971)
Directed by Luciano Ercoli.
For fans, July is dedicated to gialli. And one giallo that doesn’t come up too often in discussions is Death Walks on High Heels (La morte cammina con i tacchi alti in Italian). After Nieves Navarro‘s character’s father — a jewel thief — is murdered, the masked assailant comes after the daughter. The protagonist flees to England, however, her pursuer won’t stop until he gets what he seeks.

Sean Penn is giving his take on straight actors playing roles of gay men, saying in a recent interview that he would not play Harvey Milk today.
Penn portrayed the openly gay politician in 2008’s Milk and earned his second Oscar for the film.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” Penn told The New York Times. “Milk was the last time I had a good time.”
He continued, “It could not happen in a time like this. It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”
After starring in the film directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Dustin Lance Black, Penn went on to star in films like Fair Game (2010), The Tree of Life (2011), This Must Be the Place (2011), Gangster Squad (2013), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), The Gunman (2015), The Professor and the Madman (2019), Licorice Pizza (2021), and many more.

Ellen Burstyn returns as Chris MacNeil in The Exorcist: Believer after 50 years, reflecting on acting and ageism in a recent interview. Burstyn has had a successful career spanning nearly 70 years, and doesn't understand why ageism hasn't affected her. Burstyn is a Triple Crown Acting Winner, having won an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony throughout her career.
Ellen Burstyn returns as Chris MacNeil to battle the forces of evil in The Exorcist: Believer. The award-winning actress is stepping back into a role that she hasn’t played in 50 years, not since The Exorcist in 1973. A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Screen Rant is excited to present an exclusive clip from the new horror thriller Daughter. In Daughter, a young woman is abducted and held prisoner as she is inducted into a twisted and terrifying family unit, taking the place of a surrogate daughter. As she navigates through this horrifying circumstance, doing everything she can to survive, secrets are revealed that have even darker implications for her already bleak future.
Daughter features a smaller cast, making the captivity-based psychological thriller feel even more claustrophobic and terrifying. The movie stars Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Elyse Dinh (Spider-Man 2) as Mother, Vivien Ngô (Queen Sugar), and Ian Alexander (Star Trek: Discovery). Exclusive: Warner Bros. is really upping the stakes to its I Am Legend franchise to a stratospheric level and bringing back for the next chapter, not just original star Will Smith, but he’ll be joined by Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan in what will rep the duo’s first big movie together as stars and producers. Talk about two big stars getting together, between Smith and Jordan combined, their movies have grossed a massive $12.3 billion at the box office.
Plot details, of course, are being kept under wraps.
Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson 1954 novel, is also returning to pen the follow-up and producer as well.
All these deals are closed, I understand, and a director is not attached as of yet as the project is still being developed. Francis Lawrence directed the original 2007 movie.
Jordan and Elizabeth Raposo are producing via their Outlier Society banner.

Sean Penn defiantly swims against the Hollywood current with “Flag Day,” a labor of love that harkens back to another era of moviemaking. Jennifer Vogel’s memoir “Flim-Flam Man: A True Family History,” published in 2004, resisted film financing over 18 years, said producer William Horberg (“The Queen’s Gambit”) at the Cannes afterparty at the Martinez. Back at the start, producer Michael De Luca loved the project, and after many detours and obstacles, when the MGM studio head saw the nearly finished film, enthusiastically acquired it for release in 2021 (just as the studio was acquired by Amazon). Horberg was joyful at the film’s good fortune.
Like many other well-reviewed films at Cannes, a robust theatrical future is by no means assured for this old-fashioned ’70s-’80s father-daughter story, which marks Penn’s first time acting in his own film, after helming six features. Thanks to Matt Damon, Penn said at Sunday’s press conference,...

The 48-year-old model said that she discovered that she was not one of those people that loves playing a role in front of a camera.
Crawford added that failures were great gifts because knowing what you don't want gets you one step closer to what you do want. (Ani)...

Worried your sex life isn't like it looks on TV or in the movies? Don't be. Sex involving food, a piano or gunfire is never as fun as it sounds
When you've been brought up with pop culture as your unofficial guardian, it's easy to assume that you've been lumbered with the world's dullest sex life. You're forever comparing your experiences with those you see on screen, and you beat yourself up when you inevitably fall short.
For instance, not one single person has ever attempted to stab me to death with a pickaxe mid-coitus, like Sharon Stone did to that poor chump at the start of Basic Instinct. No union of mine has ever ended with my partner shooting a baddie in the chest on a moving train at the point of orgasm, like Cindy Crawford did in Fair Game. Nor, to my eternal annoyance, have I ever been...

Cindy Crawford is back in the buff -- modeling in nothing more than a strategically-placed blanket! The 47-year-old supermodel looks incredible in a new menswear shoot for V Magazine, showing off her ridiculous physique in various states of undress.Cindy, now a mother of two, tells the mag about some of her riskier career moves -- but it sounds like she doesn't have that many regrets."I’ll try MTV, that sounds cool. But my agents were telling me not to do it. They said I could make more money doing other jobs," she says. "But they were wrong, and 'House of Style' opened a lot of doors.""When I did Playboy, it was a big deal because I was also in Vogue," she continues. "I trusted [photographer] Herb Ritts, which is why I did it. So those things worked out in my favor, and it gave me the confidence to go and do other projects.

The track record of supermodels making their way on to the big screen is not a particularly strong one. Cindy Crawford in "Fair Game?" Not so much. Gisele Bundchen in "Taxi?" No thank you. Heidi Klum in "Ella Enchanted?" Let's move on, please. Nevertheless, they keep trying, particularly so in the current generation. Lily Cole, for example, has actually had more success than most, with roles in films like "The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus" and the upcoming "Snow White And The Huntsman." And now, one of Cole's catwalk colleagues is dipping her toes into acting waters. Screen Daily report that model Daisy Lowe, who has been a magazine fixture since she was 17, will make her major acting debut in the British thriller "Confine," which begins filming next month. In the directorial debut of Tobias Tobbell, who produced the well-regarded 2010 indie "The Drummond Will," Lowe will take the lead role...

Models appearing in movies is nothing new – ask Cindy Crawford about "Fair Game" sometime – but it does appear to have become a bit of a trend this past year. Brooklyn Decker and Rosie Huntington-Whitley managed to hold their own against Adam Sandler and Baysplosions, and became fixtures on many a casting wishlist. Now, Victoria's Secret Marisa Miller is making the jump from the catwalk and the small screen to the big, as The Hollywood Reporter says she's joining the cast of "R.I.P.D." Damn models. They aren't already blessed with fantastic gigs and incredible physical features, but now they're all able to act too. Miller's role actually reveals a new angle of the film that we hadn't heard of previously, and one that I don't think exists in Peter Lenkov's original story. It seems that when Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges are doing police duty on The Other Side, they appear as themselves,...

The model-turned-actress — like the singer-turned-actor or singer-turned-actor-turned-back-to-singer-cause-the-acting-didn’t-work-out — is nothing new in Hollywood. In fact, it’s given the industry the likes of Cameron Diaz, Halle Berry and Charlize Theron.
While Brooke Shields certainly made a splash in 1980 with The Blue Lagoon, it would be hard to argue she became a full-fledged movie star (on television, however, most certainly). Because, as far as supermodels go, none have really been able to make that transition. Just watch Cindy Crawford in Fair Game. Better yet, don’t. That’s not to say, some models haven’t become successful actresses, because there are scads of those (Rebecca Romijn,...

When it was announced that Megan Fox wouldn't be returning for the third installment of the "Transformers" franchise, many wondered who would be appealing enough to keep the predominantly young male fan base drooling.
Enter Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the knockout Victoria's Secret model, who is not only stepping off the runway and onto the big screen for her acting debut, but is taking over as the female lead in the billion-dollar franchise, for "Transformers: Dark of the Moon." While we still don't know how her character Carly will stack up against Fox's Mikaela, Rosie has already joined the ranks of models who have made the transition to film.
As we anticipate the 24-year-old beauty's breakout role, we look back at five memorable model's performances on celluloid (hey, it's one of the few times we can actually use "model" and "celluloid" in the same sentence), the good, the bad, and the (coyote) ugly.

I saw Brad Miska from Bloody Disgusting today at the supermarket and we were talking about the last Saw movie and how much I hated it and how he liked it. We both agreed that the ending would have worked better had we found out if John Kramer himself, during his tenure as Jigsaw, was victim to a larger game being played by someone else. Would have worked better than the cheap cop out shit they pulled instead. Regardless, Saw 3D came in #1 with an estimated $22.5 million. Not a big Bo compared to Pa 2's $41 million a week before. Pa would have killed Saw had they gone head to head again this year. I'm glad the Saw series is over. That cow was milked dry four movies ago.Pa 2 did good busines its second week with $16.5 million. Word of mouth kept the profits coming in. It has made $87 million worldwide.

Photo: 20th Century Fox If you've been paying attention to my predictions along the way you pretty much already know I have a rather firm belief behind a certain number of films. Based on the films I've seen I am most certain the absolute locks for a Best Picture nomination are The King's Speech, The Social Network, 127 Hours, Black Swan, Toy Story 3 and Inception. This leaves four spots open and of those four spots I am banking on the Coen brothers' True Grit to be yet another lock (risky at this point in the game, but whatever). I'm basing this solely on the fact it's a Coen film and the reaction to the trailer from those that watched it online. This leaves me with three wild card choices.
The most prominent of those three is probably David O. Russell...

Paranormal Activity 2 broke the box office opening day record for a supernatural horror movie with $20.1 million bucks, earning $41.5 estimated dollars for the weekend. Big numbers and don't be surprised if a third isn't announced very soon. I enjoyed Pa 2 for what it was. It helped fill in story details from the first movie and the scares were effective. Can't really ask for much more than that from a ghost story sequel.AssJacked 3D made...oops, was looking at the wrong movie...Jackass 3D came in 2nd with $21.6 million. Is a 4th Jackass coming? We shall see.The only other new release was Clint Eastwood's Hereafter with Matt Damon, but it tanked with $12 million. People would rather watch pissed off ghosts than happy ones during Halloween. Rest of the movies yadda yadda yadda. I'm watching football and you know how to read a box office report.Next week Megamind,...

The Odds: Steve Pond gathers reactions from members of the National Association of Theater Owners to the 10 upcoming films that were screened for the group during last week’s ShowEast conference in Orlando, and concludes that “the news is good for ‘The Fighter,’ ‘Tangled,’ and ‘Morning Glory,’ but not so much for ‘Due Date’ and ‘Fair Game.’” (The event “marked one of the first times anyone outside of Paramount” had seen “The Fighter,” and Pond’s sources reiterated what Scott has been indicating for weeks on his projection charts: the film’s strongest awards prospects are Christian Bale for best supporting actor and Melissa Leo for best supporting actress.)

Hollywoodnews.com: HollywoodNews.com’s Awards Season Roundup collects insights from around the Internet on films that are running in the Oscar race.
By 2012, the Academy would like to host the Oscars in late January or early February. Great idea.
Peter Weir’s “The Way Back,” which earned raves at this year’s Telluride festival, will receive an Oscar qualifying run in December, followed by a rollout in January.
About the race … Dave Karger at EW runs down the top categories.
CinemaBlend still sees “The Social Network” as the frontrunner, dismisses “Fair Game,” and starts banging the drum for Hailee Steinfeld of “True Grit” (based on the trailers).
Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest” gets its first trailer.

Veteran actor Ellen Burstyn believes young actors are misguided in believing an agent is a panacea. "I hear it all the time, 'How do I get an agent?' " she comments in the soft, almost breathy, voice that's become her vocal signature. "They feel the most important thing is to get an agent. It's not. The most important thing is to become a really good actor and to keep on studying, and if you do that and you have talent, people will start talking about it, and you'll find your way to an agent and work."Identified for more than 45 years with the iconic Actors Studio as a member, and now its co-president along with Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino, Burstyn is an impassioned advocate of ongoing training. "Talent only takes you so far," she says; that's a view she says is shared by current members, who are committed to...

As far as we can tell, there are precisely zero supermodels in Sean Penn and Naomi Watts’ new spy thriller (out Nov. 5) — which, depending on your personal taste, makes it more or less appealing than the 1995 movie of the same name (which starred Cindy Crawford’s mole as the mole of a super hot lawyer on the run from the Kgb). Instead, this one is based on the tell-all memoir of ex-cia operative Valerie Plame, (played by Naomi Watts) who was publicly exposed after her husband (Sean Penn) ruffled feathers in Washington by accusing the Bush administration of bending the...

A couple of months ago, it was announced that supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would be replacing Megan Fox in Transformers 3. Far be it for me to judge what comes between Michael Bay and his casting couch -- maybe Huntington-Whiteley is a talented actress (fat chance) -- but the history has not been favorable to supermodels in film. And yet, just this week, Peter Berg -- who I used to have considerable respect for -- decided to cast another model in his latest, Battleship. Her name is Brooklyn Decker. I'm sure she's a brilliant actress. Here's a sampling of her "acting" talents.
Indeed, if the past is any indication, there's next to no reason to believe that supermodels can become serious actors. Or even credible. Or even not completely embarrassing. What the hell is Peter Berg thinking? Maybe the next time a dumbass director decides it's a good idea to hire...
