Some very sad news: the man behind Leatherface in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has died.
Gunnar Hansen, who originated the Leatherface role in the horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer at his home in Maine. The Icelandic-born actor was 68.
The news was announced by Hansen's agent, Mike Eisenstadt, who called Leatherface "one of the most iconic evil figures in the history of cinema."
The 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was directed and co-written by Tobe Hooper. To horror fans, Leatherface was the cannibalistic hero, protecting family from a group of trespassing teenagers with nothing but a chainsaw.
Hanson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. He moved to Maine with his family at the age of five. He worked as a computer operator after finishing school and began theatre work during college. Hanson studied English and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Texas.
