Tommy Lee Jones is known to audiences for his authoritative roles in movies during the 1990s. The actor later gained commercial success and fame with his role in the Men in Black franchise. Jones also nabbed an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Fugitive, starring Harrison Ford.

Despite proving himself to be the definition of versatility, Jones has loved a particular type of cinema, which is a recurring element in his lengthy filmography. Although Jones initially refused to call these movies Westerns, he has since warmed up to the idea. As a result, Jones must join the modern renaissance of the genre brought about by Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

Matt Damon's diverse career includes impressive Western movie performances showcasing his range and talent. Damon's lesser-known roles in TV and film paved the way for his success, such as The Good Old Boys. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron highlighted Damon's voice acting skills in this animated Western classic.
The career of Matt Damon has been categorized by acclaimed roles across a variety of genres and has included some fantastic performances in Western movies. While Damon first became known for his breakout success as the co-writer and star of Good Will Hunting, hes also portrayed cowboys and Western lawmen on more than one occasion. These enjoyable performances showcased how well Damon was suited to genre movies as he fully embodied the free-roaming ideals and individualist nature of the Wild West.
With many incredible performances under his belt, Damon has made a name for himself through his long-running and Academy Award-winning collaboration with Ben Affleck.

Hollywood's most high-falutin' varmint must be Tommy Lee Jones. As difficult and humorless as he's perceived to be (and sometimes said to actually be), he's gone and built a career on imbuing a certain curmudgeonly ease into whatever films he appears in, from Coal Miner's Daughter to Captain America, from Men in Black to Lincoln. This was somehow true even in his younger days, before he started racking up Oscar nominations and securing the occasional director gig. The Homesman is Jones' fourth directorial effort, if you count his two made for TV movies, The Sunset Limited (2011) and The Good Old Boys (1995). Although I can't vouch for those two, his previous theatrical helmer, 2005's The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, stands as one of the...

What more is there for Tommy Lee Jones to do with a Westernc We have seen him in a cowboy hat on screen so much it is almost part of his head. To my surprise, Jones has not made a film as a director set in the Old West since the 1995 TV movie The Good Old Boys, which I have not seen. I have seen his last two films, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and HBO's The Sunset Limited, and I have come to the conclusion Jones is a very underrated director. He knows how to expertly pace a scene to bring about the maximum amount of tension. This is particularly evident in The Sunset Limited, where he and Samuel L. Jackson talk for ninety minutes, and every second of it is riveting. For his latest film, The Homesman, Jones tries to make a traditional, epic Western centered on a strong woman.

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up, one of the starrier entries in the lineup: Tommy Lee Jones' "The Homesman." The director: Tommy Lee Jones (American, 67 years old). Well, you know -- it's Tommy Lee Jones. The Texas-born, Harvard-educated actor began his acting career on Broadway, and landed his first film role in the 1970 smash "Love Story" before beginning a five-year stint on the soap opera "One Life to Live." His big-screen breakthrough came in the 1980 Oscar winner "Coal Miner's Daughter"; he picked up an Emmy for one of several TV movies he made in the decade, and his first Oscar nod in 1992 for "JFK.

While recent clips for the upcoming sequel “Men In Black III” continue to lead us to believe it was nothing but a giant payday for all involved, actor Tommy Lee Jones is always reliable, even with the treacle-filled trailer for his co-starring role with Meryl Streep in “Hope Springs” showing he’s willing to step outside his comfort zone so late in his career to bring some laughs.
Well, Variety is reporting that Jones is now lining up his next directorial outing in the form of “The Homesman,” the pioneer-era tale of a woman who joins a outlawed man (Jones) in an attempt to usher three mentally unstable women from Nebraska to Iowa, on an odyssey that well have them braving the elements every step of the way. After helming the 1995 TV movie The Good Old Boys, Tommy Lee Jones took a decade off from behind-the-camera duty, before returning to the director’s chair for the well-received The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. Since then, Jones has been mostly defined by his soulful on-screen work in both In the Valley of Elah and No Country for Old Men, but it looks as if the directing bug has caught fire once again — after overseeing HBO Films’ recent The Sunset Limited, the actor is lining up The Homesman, a road-picture period piece. [ShowBlitz]
Jones‘s duties, furthermore, will extend far beyond the realm of directing — not only is the film based on his screenplay, but he’s also signed on to produce and star in the film as well. The story will track “a pioneer woman and a claim-jumping rascal of a man (Jones) who usher three insane women on an odyssey from Nebraska to Iowa.

It’s all about who you know in Hollywood. A series of connections has teamed up Matt Damon with Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant for a “Capraesque” film Damon co-wrote with “The Office” star John Krasinski.
Formerly titled Gold Mist, the untitled drama is about a sales executive (Damon) “who arrives in a small town only to have his whole life called into question,” (Deadline). Krasinski will play a rival executive who provokes that epiphany, plus a role for Frances McDormand, who worked with Damon in 1995’s The Good Old Boys. However, with few details thus far, the focus has been on the personal pieces coming together behind the scenes for a possible April 2012 start date.
Originally, Damon had lined this up as his long-awaited directorial debut. He has been talking up the opportunity, even discussing the October 2010 announcement for this month’s issue of GQ. Until, according to Vulture,...

Since breaking out with Good Will Hunting, Matt Damon has gone from huge franchises (Bourne, Ocean’s films) to smaller independent projects (Margaret, Gerry) to prestige films (The Departed, Syriana) to bigger gambles like this year’s The Adjustment Bureau, all while having some fun (Stuck On You, Dogma). He will now be taking his career to the next level (as his pal Ben Affleck has done with success in The Town and Gone Baby Gone), by directing his first feature.

Summary: If watching two old men contemplate the existence of God in a shabby apartment for 90 minutes is your thing, by all means, dig in.
How does one compose a slightly negative review of an HBO film of a Cormac McCarthy play starring Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones? The collective pedigree of these individuals is mountainous. And yet, this is none of their best work, which isn't to say it's entirely worthless.
McCarthy has adapted his second play, originally produced by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in 2006, under the supervision of Jones, who also directs. This is Jones' third directorial attempt, following the well-received neo-Western The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada and a 1995 TV movie called The Good Old Boys, although considering this is a one room, two-man (one of whom is Jones) production, I can hardly imagine there was much directing to do.

To get Get Low off the ground, the filmmakers knew they would need a highly skillful and creative actor in the lead role of Felix – someone capable of making a character who seems right out of a backwoods fable feel palpably real and alive. They found that quality in Robert Duvall, one of America’s most diverse and respected actors, and winner of the Academy Award for his performance as a broken-down country singer trying to turn his life around in Bruce Beresford’s Tender Mercies.
Sissy Spacek, an Oscar winner for her incisive portrait of Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter and whose work has been a staple of modern American filmmaking, was another important casting choice for the role of the strong, independent widow, Maddie, the old flame who thinks she is the only person on earth to have ever loved Felix, only to discover the terrible...

Jones digs in for 'Burial' as director, star
Tommy Lee Jones will direct and star in The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, an indie feature written by 21 Grams scribe Guillermo Arriaga. Jones also will produce the film along with Michael Fitzgerald. The story follows ranch hand Pete Perkins (Jones), who attempts to keep a promise to a recently deceased friend by making sure that he is buried in his hometown in Mexico. Production begins in mid-September in Texas with two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges serving as cinematographer. Luc Besson's Europa Corp. is financing and executive producing. It is Jones' first feature directorial assignment. In 1995, he helmed the made-for-television film The Good Old Boys, which he adapted from Elmer Kelton's book of the same name. Jones, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for 1993's The Fugitive, will be seen next in Revolution Studios' Cheer Up. He is repped by Michael Black of MBM and Bill Jacobson of Browning Jacobson & Klein. UTA-repped Arriaga wrote Amores Perros as well as an installment of BMW's The Hire, a series of short Internet films.
