With Christmas now in our rearview mirror, practicing Christians look ahead to the more somber annual holidays of Lent and Holy Week. Following in the steps of hit shows like The Chosen and the recently-revealed Angel Studios production, The King of Kings, Pinnacle Peak Pictures will take audiences on a journey back through time to walk alongside Jesus Christ on his way to the cross. Today, Collider is thrilled to debut the trailer and first-look images for The Last Supper, the latest Jesus-centered production to announce its arrival. Rising into cinemas shortly after the beginning of Lent, the movie is set for a theatrical debut on March 14, giving followers a different way to observe the solemn season.

Donald Trump Jr. ridiculed the Morning Joe co-hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, for visiting Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week after they compared him to Adolf Hitler.
On Thursday, Don Jr. mocked the co-hosts during an interview with Newsmax host Rob Finnerty.
“So Joe and Mika – Morning Joe – flew down to Mar-a-Lago to meet with your father,” Finnerty told the president-elect’s son. “I’m wondering. The Jesus Christ origin story-series “The Chosen” will finally make it to The Last Supper in Season 5; on Monday, creator Dallas Jenkins gave fans a first look at how the series interpreted what his 5&2 Studios called “the most pivotal week in history.” Hard to argue with that.
“The Chosen: Last Supper (Season 5)” as it is officially titled will premiere in movie theaters via Fathom Events (in the U.S.) on March 27, 2025; Easter Sunday is April 2-, 2025. Trafalgar Releasing is the international distributor.

Lots of folks trace the origins of cinema to Eadweard Muybridge’s timed sequence photography or William Kennedy Dickson’s kinetoscope, but Ken Burns makes a convincing case that the true spirit of filmmaking starts with Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
Burns and co-directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon broke out every tool in their documentary belt in order to demonstrate how Da Vinci brought emotion and intention to his painting in “Leonardo Da Vinci.” And the filmmaking in this two-part PBS series really does feel akin to the dynamism of Da Vinci’s work, within a documentary framework.
Split screens between the usual archival material and modern photography of bodies, animals, and objects in motion act as visual proof of the lateral connections Da Vinci saw between everything. “There’s a huge explosion of technique here. But the process is the same as every film I’ve ever worked on,...

More than 500 years after his death, the works of Leonardo da Vinci have never been more ubiquitous. “Mona Lisa” just got her own Lego set, and recently played a central role in Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” A controversial allusion to his famed “The Last Supper” during this summer’s Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony reacquainted the masses with the iconic image’s origins, and his “Vitruvian Man” is still a staple on the walls of anatomy classrooms across the globe.
The Italian Renaissance painter and intellectual, who produced only around 20 paintings in his lifetime, was the epitome of a man ahead of his time. He also happens to be exactly the kind of posthumously appreciated figure about which Ken Burns has spent his career making seminal documentary films. Yet, more so than any of his previous subjects, the Emmy-winning filmmaker thinks da Vinci could have mastered the modern day.

PBS’ new two-part, four-hour Leonardo da Vinci probably won’t redefine the identity of Ken Burns, renowned as a documentary chronicler of all things Americana.
But it does find the director, working with frequent collaborators Sarah Burns and David McMahon, in markedly different terrain, both historically and culturally. More than that, Leonardo da Vinci (we’ll see how many times I write Leonardo DiCaprio as the title here) finds the team working with a very different visual and rhetorical approach, making a project that isn’t really enlightening about da Vinci as a person, but explores the polymath’s intellectual and artistic processes in a way that’s effectively cumulative and often fascinating.
It remains my consistent feeling that Burns and company are better the more primary source interview subjects they have. It’s why I love Baseball, why I think The Dust Bowl is underrated and why I prefer...

Ken Burns’ latest documentary masterwork, a pioneering two-part series that transforms our understanding of one of history’s most astonishing polymaths, brings Leonardo da Vinci’s art and science to vivid life. Burns, along with his daughter Sarah and son-in-law David McMahon, creates an immersive investigation of a genius centuries ahead of his time.
This four-hour documentary deeply explores Leonardo’s incredible life, nuancedly portraying a man who flawlessly combined art, science, and imagination. The series focuses on fewer than ten completed paintings while revealing hundreds of notebook pages overflowing with revolutionary ideas, revealing Leonardo’s restless intellectual drive.
Burns and his team have produced something more than a typical biographical documentary. They created a dynamic visual narrative that captures Leonardo’s distinct viewpoint with split screens, historical footage, and imaginative cinematography. Keith David narrates the documentary and features an intriguing musical composition by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, bringing Leonardo’s world to life.

When Cameron Diaz was still in high school, she signed her first modeling contract and appeared in ads for Levi's and Calvin Klein. She became recognizable nationwide when she appeared on the cover of Seventeen Magazine in 1990. Fittingly enough, she was actually 17. Diaz continued to model for a few years and even appeared in a Coca-Cola campaign before successfully auditioning for the role of Tina in Chuck Russell's comedic superhero noir "The Mask" in 1994. The star of "The Mask" was Jim Carrey, then experiencing a massive career upswing, and Diaz was swept up with him, becoming a household name almost immediately.
Diaz almost instantly became a media sensation, and her acting career took off. In the years after "The Mask," Diaz appeared in notable indie dramas like "She's the One," "The Last Supper," and "Feeling Minnesota," all of them with notable co-stars. By 1997, she moved into Hollywood's top tier,...

Note: The following story contains spoilers from the “Grotesquerie” finale.
“Grotesquerie” may not yet officially have a Season 2 renewal, but that hasn’t stopped co-creator Ryan Murphy and star Niecy Nash-Betts from talking about the FX series’ future.
“We talked about a second season before we ever filmed the first page of dialogue,” Nash-Betts told TheWrap. “Ryan always has a plan. I’m privy to doing things, but you don’t want to give any spoilers.”
That’s especially true of this horror thriller, which stands as one of the most tense and winding series of the year. “Grotesquerie” started as a comparatively simple story at the beginning of Season 1, following Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) as she attempted to solve a series of increasingly disturbing murders in her small town. That premise was completely upended in “Unplugged,” an installment that revealed Lois was actually in a coma and all...

I think, at this point, Ryan Murphy is just playing a game of ping-pong with Lois’ mental health. [Spoiler Alert] Grotesquerie’s ending does make it clear that Lois isn’t in her right state of mind, which means she is not a reliable narrator, and yes, I brought up that possibility in my previous recaps as well. Even at the end of season 1, we are not sure if the Grotesquerie serial killer is real or just a specter of Lois’ troubled mind. In the closing shot of the final episode, we came across the second murder, which looked like a gory recreation of “The Last Supper,” but it didn’t resemble the visuals from Lois’ dream. In the real version (if you call it so), the body of Charlie Mayhew (the Holy Father) is hung on a cross at the center of the table. And you already know that the only...

Warning: the following contains mentions of violence, gore, and spoilers for Grotesquerie!
FX's Grotesquerie continues to make a splash with its unique look at a murder mystery format, adding a deeper layer with all the biblical references sprinkled throughout the show. The horror meets true-crime show by Ryan Murphy follows Detective Lois Tryon (Niecy Nash-Betts) as she investigates a series of gruesome murders staged after biblical scenes, and the case becomes increasingly personal. A local nun named Sister Megan Duval (Micaela Diamond) takes an interest in the case for her parish newspaper, and quickly forms a unique friendship with Detective Tryon.
The unlikely partnership between Grotesquerie characters Lois and Sister Megan serves as a guide to deciphering the show's most (literally) grotesque crimes. From the seven deadly sins to clues that reference specific biblical verses and tropes, the show offers a glimpse into what happens when religion is taken too literally.

After watching the first six episodes of Grotesquerie, I am certain that either Detective Lois Tryon is hallucinating about the titular serial killer or the murderer is none other than the shady priest, Charlie Mayhew. A third scenario could be that the series is executed so poorly that it makes most of the scenes look tacky, almost like everything is happening in a dream. Anyway, coming back to our weekly recap, the fifth episode picked up from where last week’s episode had ended. Lois and Sister Megan Duval gave a lift to a blood-soaked woman named Andrea, who requested they drop her off at a nearby motel where she was staying. Now, this motel in itself seemed quite strange. The episode failed to explain why so many unusual things were happening around this motel and how it was linked to the Grotesquerie killer, so maybe the creators aren’t...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first two episodes of FX’s Grotesquerie.
Niecy Nash-Betts leads Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie as a seasoned detective who, while battling her own addiction, must throw herself into perhaps the most disturbing case of her entire career.
The first two episodes of the FX series, which launched on September 25, establish Lois Tryon as a once-revered investigator whose alcoholism has begun to affect both her work and home life. But, when she begins investigating a series of gruesome killings with religious undertones, she’s determined to solve the case at all costs.
She enlists the help of a journalist nun named Sister Megan, who helps provide some context about the Biblical connections to each of the crime scenes — until the end of the second episode, when the police discover a scene that needs no explanation. The killer, who Lois is starting to feel is taunting her,...

Elle King told People magazine ahead of the release of her new single “High Road” that it wasn’t her intention to hurt her father, Rob Schneider, when she spoke out against his “anti-gay” views in August. The “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer went viral for her appearance on Bunnie Xo’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast, where she and eviscerated Schneider for recent anti-drag and anti-lgbtq comments he made. She spoke publicly about their toxic relationship growing up and said she was not currently interested in speaking to him.
“I never in a million years thought that that was going to go viral. I was just speaking about my childhood and about my truth,” King told People. “I was not trying to hurt him.”
“A lot of people said, ‘How could she say that about her family?’ and ‘Everything needs to be behind closed doors.’ No, it doesn’t,” she continued.

It takes, to use a precise technical term, chutzpah, for a filmmaker to adapt the same source material as Stanley Kubrick. Yet that’s exactly what director Florian Frerichs (The Last Supper) has done with Traumnovelle, his film based on Arthur Schnitzler’s classic 1926 novella that also inspired Kubrick’s final film, 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut. Frerichs offers a cinematic take on the story that’s more faithful than Kubrick’s, and also more erotic. (Kubrick, for all his brilliance, tended toward chilliness in his work, even when dealing with racy themes). Nonetheless, it’s hard to avoid making comparisons, which inevitably color your opinion of this film receiving its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival.
The story has been updated to modern-day Berlin, which allows the opportunity for such eyes-wide-opening touches as the one in the first scene, when two beautiful women come on to a man in...

It’s easy to take Home Improvement at face value. It’s a simple story about a Michigan family man named Tim Taylor, his wife Jill, his three sons and, of course, his next-door neighbor Wilson, who perpetually hides the lower portion of his face as if it were Austin Powers’ junk.

In retrospect, even though it regularly featured the raw sexual charisma of Richard Karn, Home Improvement was actually pretty dull. Thankfully, one viewer has come along with a wildly outlandish theory that makes the sitcom far more intriguing.
A fan on Reddit proposed an elaborate theory that Home Improvement is really biblical in nature, with Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor acting as a metaphorical “Christ figure.” Which may seem pretty tough to swallow, if not for the fact that Tim Allen does have some experience when it comes to playing bearded deities associated with Christmas.

Sometimes, an interview subject surprises you with something you didn’t see coming at all. “This film is one of the first films to incorporate a fully AI-generated sequence,” Florian Frerichs (The Last Supper), director and co-writer of Traumnovelle, a new adaptation of the Arthur Schnitzler novella that inspired Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, mentions during our Zoom chat.
Nikolai Kinski, the star of the film, about an upper middle-class couple that gets drawn into a secret world of erotic fantasy, which opens the 31st Oldenburg Film Festival on Wednesday, wasn’t fully prepared for the revelation either. “What do you mean?” he asks.
“I think it’s one of the first films that did it,” Frerichs explains, sharing that AI was used for a dream sequence in the movie when the protagonist Jakob, played by Kinski, finds out from his partner Amelia, portrayed by Laurine Price, about her dreams.

Season 14 of The Real Housewives of New Jersey has become a petty mess thanks to its long-running feuds. The glamorous yet rotten final attempt at reconciliation was dramatically named "The Last Supper," and in what was no surprise to anyone watching it, nothing got resolved. Broken glass and spilled drinks littered the floors as producers had to intervene to hold back Danielle Cabral from charging at Jennifer Aydin. Verbal insults were traded by Teresa Giudice and Melissa Gorga before they did a pose-off. The reshaped reunion show that followed up on this finale has suffered from these various feuds and then some. Not very demure nor very mindful.

Battlestar Galactica's "Last Supper" teaser hinted at the characters' fates in the finale. The image contained hidden clues about future events, reflecting character arcs. Religious overtones in the image reflect the central themes of faith and fate in the show.
Battlestar Galactica's fourth season teaser "The Last Supper" quietly set the stage for several character's fates in the show, and hinted at the full scope of the finale. Battlestar Galactica was a phenomenon when it debuted, helping solidify the sci-fi genre's evolution on television in the early era of prestige television. This thoughtful approach to big genre fare can be seen all over the series, but especially in the "Last Supper" promotional image that was created ahead of the show's fourth season.

James Franco's role in Alien: Covenant was meant to be more significant, but ended up as a brief cameo due to character restructuring. Franco played Captain Jake Branson, whose early death was meant to impact the story and the character of Christopher Oram. Despite additional scenes being shot, Franco's role was significantly reduced in the final cut of Alien: Covenant.
James Franco's Alien: Covenant role was barely noticeable in the finished movie, but the plan was for it to be more meaningful. Alien Covenant continued Ridley Scott's return to the Alien franchise following Prometheus, which was a prequel to his 1979 movie. While Prometheus shied away from the involvement of the iconic xenomorph monsters, Alien: Covenant served as a sequel that saw more involvement from these creatures. It also followed a new set of characters with some notable stars leading the cast.

Traumnovelle, a new adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s famed erotic short story that inspired Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, will open this year’s Oldenburg Film Festival, premiering on Sept. 11.
The drama, from German director Florian Frerichs (The Last Supper), stars Nikolai Kinski and Laurine Price as a respectable upper middle-class couple who get drawn into a secret world of erotic fantasy. Detlev Buck, Bruno Eyron, and Nora Islei co-star with cameos from Sharon Brauner and Sharon Kovacs. The producers are Warnuts Entertainment and Studio Babelsberg.
Originally published in 1926, Schnitzler’s Traumnovelle got its most-famous adaptation courtesy of Kubrik’s 1999 feature starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The production famously shot over a record-breaking 400 days. Shortly after finishing the film, and just six days after screening his cut for Kidman and Cruise, Kubrick died.

Rob Schneider is calling for forgiveness from his daughter, the singer Elle King, who recently appeared on Bunnie Xo’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast and eviscerated Schneider for his recent anti-drag and anti-lgbtq comments. She spoke publicly about their toxic relationship growing up and said she is not interested in speaking to him these days.
“It’s fun being a parent, isn’t it?” Schneider told Tucker Carlson in a new interview when asked to respond to King’s comments. “Well I just want to tell my daughter, Elle, I love you and I wish I was the father in my 20s that you needed. Well, that could have been an e-mail. Rather than a reunion, The Real Housewives of New Jersey opted to have the women gather in two rooms at Rails, the location of the infamous Last Supper, to watch the last episode. And well, viewers watched them watch and react. The end. Was it necessary? Not at all. Did it aid in resolving anything? Not at all. Sometimes its best to leave on a high note. The Last Supper was a monumental episode that truly ended an era and laid the foundation for the future. By having this fake reunion, it dampened the high by leaving on a meh. It truly didnt need to happen.

Four-time Grammy Nominee Elle King appeared recently on Bunnie XOs Dumb Blonde podcast, where she spoke about her relationship with her actor father, Rob Schneider. She took the opportunity to elaborate on the tumultuous relationship between the two, and how she disagrees with his outspoken views of drag and the LGBTQ+ community following the opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games.
Reported by Variety, King's comments followed Schneider's reaction to the Olympic opening ceremony. The ceremony featured an interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper", but instead of the usual image of Jesus and his disciples, the moment saw drag queens and colorful people taking their place in the tableau. In late July, Schneider spoke openly about his distaste for the imagery included in the French's show, remarking that he hoped these Olympics "get the same number of viewers as Cspan."

Even to the passive or occasional viewer, the 2024 Olympics proved one thing: We are, to borrow a phrase, so back.
The quadrennial event serves many functions — a celebration of sport, obviously; a chance for the host city to peacock before a global audience; a chance to check in (speaking of Peacock) on where broadcasting technology is at a given moment in time. But it’s also a vibe check of sorts, a moment to pause and reflect on the state of things, defined as broadly as possible. And after a Covid-delayed and then Covid-restrained Tokyo games, during which elite athletes performed to empty rooms and one of the world’s great cities sat cosseted and unable to show itself, Paris in 2024 gleamed with something Olympics fans had been yearning for last cycle: possibility.

The Paris Olympics set a high bar for itself after an opening ceremony that showcased Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and a scenic backdrop involving virtually every Parisian landmark along the Seine. But the closing ceremony — taking place on a blistering hot day in stark contrast to the pouring rain of its kickoff — also delivered a blockbuster show with a Hollywood twist.
As part of the glitzy handover to Los Angeles as it prepares to host 2028’s Summer Games, Tom Cruise wowed audiences with a few epic stunts while Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed and H.E.R. sang the U.S. national anthem. Films Boutique has acquired French and international rights to “Pigskin” (“Peau de cochon”), a 2004 film directed by Philippe Katerine, a French musician, actor and filmmaker who took part in the Olympics’ opening ceremony. Films Boutique will relaunch the film in the fall festivals for its 20th birthday.
Katerine stars in the film opposite French singer Dominique A, film critic Thierry Jousse and Helena Noguerra. Katerine won the Cesar for best actor in a supporting role in Gilles Lellouche’s box office hit “Le Grand Bain” in 2019. He’s also been celebrated as a musician and was crowned Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique, French equivalent to the Grammy awards in 2020. He previously performed “Moustache” on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.
More recently, Katerine played the Greek God Dionysus in the controversial scene which was interpreted by some as a satirical take on Leonardo da Vinci’s religious painting “The Last Supper.

Barbara Butch is a self-proclaimed “love activist.” This, she says, is why her feelings weren’t hurt when her appearance in the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony unleashed an avalanche of death threats, abuse and harassment.
The French DJ was the centerpiece of a tableau during the four-hour event on July 26. Drag queens and dancers struck poses along a long table with Butch on the decks in the middle. Singer Philippe Katerine, painted in sparkly blue and semi-naked, sang while resting on a dinner platter in front.
Social media users were quick to claim the image resembled Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, the portrait of Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles before he was crucified. Suddenly, Butch was caught at the center of mass backlash.
Archbishop Charles Scicluna, the highest-ranking Catholic official in Malta and Vatican official for its doctrinal office, said he contacted France’s ambassador to Valletta to complain about the “gratuitous insult.

Donald Trump Jr. criticized the “satanic” imagery conveyed in the drag queens’ performance during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
Don Jr. interpreted the scene performed as a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” which depicts Jesus Christ’s meal with his apostles before his crucifixion.
“As a kid we would be excited for weeks leading up to the games,” he wrote on X.

“It’s such a shame that event that used to create so much national pride now creates, at best, indifference,” he stated. “Using the games to push woke ideology has zero to do with anything the games stands for.

The comedian opened this weekend’s episode of Last Week Tonight with a clip of the Republican candidate’s “disastrous appearance” before the National Association of Black Journalists, where he made unintelligible statements about Vice President Kamala Harris‘ ethnicity.

Updated: Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics, has filed a second complaint on Aug. 3, along with two organizers of the event, Alexandre Billard and Thierry Reboul, alleging death threats, swiftly prompting the crime unit (Brdp) to launch a new investigation, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
According to national newspaper Le Parisien, some of the death threats cited verses of the Quran, saying that the “Allah’s punishment will fall down on the organizers in Saint Denis.” The closing ceremony will take place at the Stade de France, located in Saint Denis, on the outskirts of Paris. Billard is the joint managing director of the event planner agency Ubi Bene, while Reboul is the executive director of the Olympic ceremonies.
Jolly previously filed a complaint on July 30, the same day that the DJ of the ceremony, known as Barbara Butch, also filed a complaint for cyber harassment.

In stark contrast to Kangana’s actions, Vikramaditya Singh, despite losing the election, has been praised for his on-ground efforts during the Himachal floods. This comparison has fueled discussions about the responsibilities and expected conduct of politicians.

French celebrity drag queen and tv presenter Nicky Doll is suing Laurence Fox for defamation over pedophile comments he made about drag artists appearing in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
The action comes just three months after UK actor Fox, who is now better known as a controversial political activist and TV presenter, was ordered to pay £180,000 in damages to former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant Crystal (Colin Seymour) and charity trustee Simon Blake, after he called them “pedophiles” on social media.
Nicky Doll, whose birth name is Karl Sanchez, was among a group of drag artists appearing in a scene entitled ‘Festivity’, celebrating inclusion and diversity. It was among 12 tableaux celebrating the French spirit woven into the Olympics opening ceremony on July 26.
Fox responded to the tableau with a clip and caption which read: “No point in getting wound up when the child f**kers want to wind you up.

Emmanuel Macron is praising the 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony amid the attacks and death threats organizers received.
A portion of the opening ceremony featuring drag queens came under fire after it was believed to be mocking Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Religious groups and high-profile conservative voices like Fuller House star Candace Cameron Bure called the interpretation “disgusting.”
However, the opening ceremony recreated the feast of the Gods, and Macron recently praised the organizers’ “audacity”.
“I am scandalized and sad about what he’s been through,” Macron told reporters, according to Reuters. “The French and the whole world were very proud of this opening ceremony, it made us very proud. His audacity did a lot of good to a lot of people.”
Macron continued, “It showed France’s audacity, and it all happened with the suitable artistic freedom. Nothing justifies threats to an artist.”

Paris Prosecutors Investigating Death Threats Sent to Artistic Director of Olympics Opening Ceremony
Prosecutors in Paris are investigating death threats and harassment directed at Thomas Jolly, the artistic director behind the opening ceremony at the 2024 Olympics, according to The Associated Press.
The investigation was launched, the Paris prosecutor’s office said, after Jolly filed a police complaint on Tuesday, July 30 (the opening ceremony took place a few days prior, on July 26). Jolly said he’d been subjected to death threats, “public insults,” and “defamation” and has been “the target of threatening messages and insults on social networks criticizing his sexual orientation and his wrongly-assumed Israeli roots.
