Oh yeah, you better believe it's morphin' time again. Almost every Millennial of a certain age likely has fond memories of watching endless "Power Rangers" cartoons on TV during casual Saturday mornings, which is probably why Hollywood has tried its hardest to make this franchise happen again and again over the years. The last theatrical attempt in live-action came with 2017's "Power Rangers," which unfortunately didn't perform quite well enough at the box office to earn a widely-demanded sequel. Well, fans can now look forward to another go at this punchy golden goose -- this time, in the form of a live-action Disney+ series.
The Wrap has the scoop on this exciting "Power Rangers" project, which is being spearheaded by the same creative team behind the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" Disney+ series that debuted in 2023. Film history is built on cult classics as much as is it on blockbusters. These are movies that, while they didn't necessarily make a huge impact upon their initial release, gained appreciation in later years and left fans wondering why we didn't see more of what was originally presented. Somehow, a "Power Rangers" film falls into that category.
Directed by Dean Israelite, 2017's "Power Rangers" reinvented the story about a group of teenagers with attitude being recruited by the ancient warrior Zordon (Bryan Cranston) to fight bad guys in color-coded super suits. By jazzing up the origins of Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Billy (Rj Cyler), and the rest of the team, Israelite and his collaborators created a fun film that should have paved the way for sequels. That was the plan, anyway.
Before the film was even released, Lionsgate announced plans to make as many as seven "Power Rangers" movies, assuming...

From world-changing snaps to jaw-dropping debuts, the Marvel Cinematic Universe delivers magical moments. The storylines aside, none of it would matter without the characters -- the heroes and rogues -- but woof, the worst MCU villains don't do the franchise any favors. In fact, they only add credence to accusations from the likes of Martin Scorsese that superhero movies aren't real cinema. Like a skunk in a perfume store, these antagonists stink up the joint and bring down the value of everything else around them.
Sure, not every swing results in a home run, but these villains are the worst of the worst. Think of Tim Blake Nelson's Samuel Sterns from "Captain America: Brave New World" -- he doesn't come across as the scary Leader from "The Incredible Hulk" comics, but more like Ivan Ooze's long-lasting cousin from "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie." Tommy Oliver is the Power Rangers character with the most forms in the TV show, having used four different colors and five different sets of powers. Introduced as the evil Green Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Tommy was freed from Rita Repulsa’s mind control spell and joined the heroes. Despite the massive popularity of the Green Ranger, “Green With Evil” was only the beginning of an impressive story that would continue for decades. As a result, Tommy was always getting upgrades and new costumes.
One of the reasons why Tommy was part of so many different Power Rangers teams is that, for most of the 1990s, the show tried to keep as many original cast members as possible. Tommy, Kat, and Adam were all in Mighty Morphin, Zeo, and Turbo, meaning they all got multiple forms in a short period. That said, Tommy was special in a lot of ways,...

It's a sad fact of Power Rangers that male Rangers always outnumber their female counterparts and that they typically receive more screen time and relevance to the story as well. Unsurprisingly, characters who are exceptions to the latter are often hailed as some of the best in the franchise. Jen Scotts and Taylor Earhardt are adored for being the awesome original leaders of their teams, Karone has a stunning arc across multiple seasons, Lauren Shiba made a massive impact in only five episodes, Shelby Watkins was always front and center, and Kimberly Ann Hart remains the most beloved female Ranger ever.
For all that some of them receive their proper due, other incredible female Power Rangers too often go overlooked by fans. These heroines may not have all been central to the stories of their seasons, but they're all still memorable and important in their own ways. Fans may like these Rangers,...

Whenever the next Power Rangers movie happens, it should borrow from one of the coolest Green Ranger stories in the franchise to finally correct a 30-year-old mistake. Power Rangers’ most recent movie, the 2017 reboot, bombed at the box office and killed any chances of it getting sequels. While seeing a Power Rangers cinematic universe following the 2017 reboot would have been exciting, the franchise has long moved from that iteration. Power Rangers has since continued to release TV shows and specials, and it now remains to be seen what is next for the brand.
With Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s ending bringing some sort of closure to the show, now is arguably the perfect time for another Power Rangers reboot. Be it on the big screen or with a new TV show, the franchise can use this hiatus to reimagine itself and start fresh, even if it means moving away from the current Power Rangers chronology.

The Power Rangers universe was built on crossovers and cameos, many of which came out of nowhere and helped build a sense of continuity that made the show even better. When it comes to special appearances in Power Rangers, there is a difference between the usual crossover episodes between the current and the previous team, and cameos from legacy heroes. Almost every season had one team-up episode featuring the previous Power Rangers team, but not every season had cameos from other generations.
From 1993 to 1998, every Power Rangers show was part of the same overarching story that later became known as the Zordon Era. After Power Rangers in Space, the show started to have more standalone series, which made cameos and crossover episodes very special. From iconic Rangers showing up to help the younger generation to villains returning decades after their first appearance, Power Rangers knows how to do cameos.

Quick Links Power Rangers (2017) is One of My Favorite Superhero Movies Ever I Know Why Audiences Didn't Respond Well to Power Rangers (2017) Power Rangers (2017) Should Have Been the Start of a Franchise
I enjoy Power Rangers in virtually any medium it comes in. Naturally, I watch the television series like any other fan, but I also love the superb comic books; I'm among the few who truly appreciated the online tabletop RPG Power Ranger Hyperforce, and I've played and enjoyed plenty of the admittedly awful Power Rangers video games. When it comes to the movies, I grew up with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, but while nostalgic, neither of these films hold a handle to Power Rangers (2017).
While it was a box office and critical flop, the 2017 Power Rangers movie is a masterpiece and a more open mind from fans could have turned it into a franchise.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, Power Rangers’ newest game, is a nostalgic reminder of what made the original 1990s show so good. Whether Power Rangers should focus on Mighty Morphin or give other seasons their time in the spotlight is an old debate within the fanbase. On the one hand, standalone seasons have been the foundation of the Power Rangers TV show for decades. On the other hand, no Power Rangers season ever matched Mighty Morphin in terms of popularity.
While Mmpr is arguably not the best Power Rangers show, it remains the most iconic and culturally significant over 30 years later. Power Rangers is synonymous with Mighty Morphin for many, which is why the original five teenagers with attitude and their classic villains are always showing up in different projects. This includes Rita’s Rewind, a very fun game that celebrates the original series and offers lots of nostalgia.

Power Rangers (2017) cast Bryan Cranston as Zordon, but the Breaking Bad star, who already had a history with the franchise, ended up playing one of my favorite versions of a Red Ranger as well. Way before he played the hilarious Hal in Malcolm in the Middle and won dozens of awards for his portrayal of Walter White in Breaking Bad, Cranston had a couple of voice roles in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He played Snizzard in the monster’s first of multiple appearances and later voiced Twin Man, another monster of the week.
Given Cranston’s history with Power Rangers, plus how his career skyrocketed a few years after Mmpr and eventually led him to star in one of the greatest television shows of all time, the fact that he was cast as Zordon for the 2017 film made me incredibly excited for the reboot. Watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie on VHS is one of my favorite childhood memories, which is why learning that the film isnt canon was so heartbreaking. Power Rangers is more than Mighty Morphin, but we cant deny how big of an impact the original series had on pop culture. Over 30 years after the premiere of Mighty Morphin, characters like Jason, Kimberly, and Rita Repulsa remain pillars of the Power Rangers franchise across different media even though there have been dozens of other teams since then.

Tommy Oliver made his Power Rangers debut in 1993, but the best version of the original Green Ranger would only show up more than a decade later. The Power Rangers series has featured countless actors since its inception over 30 years ago, all of whom contributed to creating the franchise as we know it. The idea of legacy is very important in Power Rangers, especially when it comes to the original Mighty Morphin actors. That said, its difficult to argue against Tommy being the shows most iconic character.
As an evil Ranger with the coolest toys and his own theme song, the original Green Ranger effortlessly became Mighty Morphin Power Rangers most popular character and changed the trajectory of the show. Even when the Green Ranger was written out of the story to match Power Rangers Super Sentai counterpart, Tommy remained on the show and became even more important to the series as the White Ranger.

This article contains spoilers for the "Toy Story" movies.
When John Lasseter's "Toy Story" was released in 1995, it was a coup for the industry. CGI had been used in films for a decade and there were myriad computer-animated short films, but the first theatrically released, fully-computer-animated feature changed the landscape. It certainly helped that "Toy Story" was a massive success, raking in over $365 million on a mere $30 million budget. The film was also highly acclaimed, sporting a novel concept (your toys are alive when you aren't looking), an excellent screenplay, and a first-rate cast.
After "Toy Story," it felt like the floodgates opened, and a shift from traditionally animated features to fully computer-animated features occurred within the next five years. One might even recall when Disney announced that it would be shuttering its traditional animation studio and only make computer-animated features going forward. This was slightly before its 2004 film "Home on the Range" flopped.

Pretty much every popular movie and TV franchise from the ‘90s, no matter how goofy, seems to be pretty much immortal these days — from Full House, to The Mummy, to the existentially-distressing reboot of Barney we’re reportedly getting one day soon. Also, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are still very much a thing.
Even though it clearly just began as a way to recycle Japanese TV footage for unsuspecting, toy-hungry ‘90s kids, the Power Rangers-verse has continued into the 21st century in the form of comic books, TV specials and the 2017 feature-length film reboot, which doubled as an overlong Krispy Kreme commercial.
Last year, Netflix released Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, which brought back several cast members from the TV series for a nostalgia-heavy hour-long special to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary, and make everyone who watched it as a kid feel old as hell.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 is the most widely recognized installment in the entire franchise. While many other Power Rangers seasons have eclipsed it in quality, its relevance in pop culture continues to be far beyond any of its successors. An eight-year comic run primarily based on Mighty Morphin has just recently concluded, and the 2017 Power Rangers movie is also based around this nostalgic era.
While not the high point for the franchise its reputation would suggest, the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is filled with all-time classic episodes. Its standalone episodes define the series' formula moving forward and introduce some of the most classic monsters, while its two-parters display the show's growing ambition. The season also has one of the greatest Power Rangers stories of all time, with the Green with Evil five-parter.

The Power Rangers villains featured in the main television series are as powerful as any found in the franchise's films or comics. Season after season, teams of Rangers have defeated monsters, aliens, demons, and artificial intelligence that no one else could have. The strongest Power Rangers villains pose threats to the entire universe, either through their power or through the strength of their armies.
Most commonly, the main villain of a Power Rangers season is the strongest antagonist in it. These villains don't typically get into many fights, so determining their levels of power comes down to the hype the series builds around them, the scope of what they're able to accomplish, and, of course, how they fare when they do combat the Rangers. Some of these villains are intergalactic conquerors, while others are embodiments of pure evil.

Not counting movies or specials, there are 973 episodes of Power Rangers. With the entire cast typically swapped out between seasons, the majority of Rangers only appear in a small fraction of the overall franchise. However, the nature of how the series originally operated allowed its earliest cast members to be exceptions to this rule.
Power Rangers from the classic Mighty Morphin' era appeared in more episodes than any others. Between Season 1 of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers being 60 episodes, making it the longest season in the series, and its characters appearing in more seasons beyond it, several Rangers from this era have appeared in hundreds of episodes. Power Rangers was a risky idea, but adapting Super Sentai footage surprisingly worked. Most episodes of Mighty Morphin followed a formula and lacked high stakes. The Green Ranger was iconic and stole the show, but he wasn't around for that long compared to Tommy's entire journey.

It surged to unmitigated popularity in the decade's early years, with the TV series, books and toys being found in almost every household at the time. It was the obvious choice, then, for Saban Entertainment to fast-track a live-action film simply titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. While the movie was released between Seasons 2 and 3 of the TV series, it actually took place in a different continuity. While it was true to the endearingly cheesy tone of the original TV series, the film is one example of a bigger, more polished production actually working against it.

Dino Fury was a standout Power Rangers season. Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury featured a great team with well-developed characters. Cosmic Fury surpassed Dino Fury, offering an even better Power Rangers show.
I have been a Power Rangers fan for most of my life, but it was thanks to the shows newest team that I fell in love with the Super Sentai-based superheroes again after a series of disappointing seasons. Starting with Mighty Morphin in 1993, Power Rangers has built a massive legacy that includes 30 seasons of television, three theatrical movies, multiple specials, dozens of games, and hundreds of comic book issues. Watching Power Rangers in chronological order can be difficult, though, as the show has had highs and lows across three decades.

The Green Ranger's introduction in "Green With Evil" was a game-changer. Tommy Oliver's evolution from extra Ranger to leader of the team defined Power Rangers' 1990s era. Tommy's legacy shined in crossovers like "Forever Red" and "Dimensions in Danger," which highlighted his importance and impact.
Tommy Oliver, the original Green Ranger, had some incredible and unforgettable moments throughout his Power Rangers history. Most Power Rangers characters were only on the show for just one season, but Tommy was front and center in multiple series. The character was part of the Mighty Morphin, Zeo, Turbo, and Dino Thunder teams, not to mention his appearances in crossover episodes. As such, it can be difficult to pick Tommy Olivers greatest moments in Power Rangers.
Tommys Power Rangers story begins in 1993 during the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Despite being known by many as the original Green Ranger, Tommy wore other colors on the show.

Ivan Ooze only appeared in the 1995 movie, not in the TV show or comics. Ivan Ooze's design and humor perfectly suited the Power Rangers universe. Power Rangers: The Movie remains a standalone classic, non-canon but nostalgic.
One of the most iconic Power Rangers villains of all time never actually appeared on the TV show and has only one appearance in the franchise. More than 30 years after the premiere of Mighty Morphin, the Power Rangers universe has seen countless villains between major antagonists and monsters-of-the-week. Most of them originated from Super Sentai shows, but characters like Lord Zedd or Astronema were created for Power Rangers. Even though Power Rangers continues to release new series and comic book runs, the nostalgia over the original show has shaped the franchise for years.

Tanner Buchanan is a popular Green Ranger fancast inspired by his role in Cobra Kai. Buchanan's martial arts background would suit Tommy Oliver perfectly. Recasting Tommy for a potential Power Rangers reboot would be difficult due to his iconic status.
The most popular Green Ranger fancast for a potential Power Rangers reboot would recreate one of the reasons why Tommy Oliver was such a great character. Played by the late Jason David Frank, Tommy first appeared in Mighty Morphin season 1, episode 17, Green With Evil: Part I. Power Rangers (2017) had a promising cast that portrayed nuanced and vulnerable versions of the iconic characters. Unfortunately, they never got the chance to reprise their roles. The actors from Power Rangers (2017) have gone on to have successful careers in film, television, and music, showing the potential the reboot had. A sequel to Power Rangers (2017) will not happen, but the Power Rangers franchise could soon reinvent itself following the closing chapter that was Cosmic Fury.
Power Rangers (2017) was a box office disappointment and never got a sequel, which is unfortunate considering one great thing the movie featured. Ten years after Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, the franchise returned to the big screen with 2017’s Power Rangers. Rather than an extension of the TV show like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) or a canon story like Turbo, Power Rangers (2017) was a reboot that reimagined the original series as a modern story.

Power Rangers (2017) is the only Mighty Morphin Green Ranger theatrical appearance, featuring a new version of the character in which Rita was once the Green Ranger. The 2017 Power Rangers movie reimagined the TV show's characters and mythology, giving them different backstories and motivations. There are currently no announced plans for another Power Rangers movie, making it unlikely that Tommy's Green Ranger form will appear in a live-action movie project in the near future.
Power Rangers (2017) tried to reinvent the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in a more grounded, serious universe, and it holds an interesting Green Ranger record that might never be broken. There are only three theatrical Power Rangers movies – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995), Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997), and the 2017 reboot. Power Rangers has seen a wide range of releases, including movies, TV specials, and TV shows, with some being better than others. Some Power Rangers movies, such as Clash of the Red Rangers and The Legendary Battle: Extended Edition, are actually TV specials combined into one release. While so many superhero movies have post-credit scenes, there are just as many non-superhero movie post-credits scenes that went absolutely nowhere. While post-credits scenes have been a thing for decades, superhero movies got the most use out of them starting in the 2000s, as studios saw them as a way to set up new characters or a sequel. The McU's success is literally built on post-credits scenes, whereas post-credits scenes in Dcu movies often lead nowhere, with the most notable example being Black Adam's post-credits scene, which sees the return of Henry Cavill's Superman.
Regardless of what a post-credits scene promises, if the movie isn't successful, a sequel most likely won't ever be green-lit or the IP will be rebooted years later. Either way, fans of the movie don't ever get to see what the post-credits scene set up, and there are some prime examples outside of the superhero genre.

While the Power Rangers are known for their flashy and effective martial arts skills, some Power Rangers actors were trained martial artists long before earning their roles. These actors not only played a Power Ranger at some point in time, but also became proficient in some form of martial arts before stepping into the franchise. In this way, they are martial artists both on-screen and beyond it as well.
The Power Rangers franchise first began in 1993 with the premiere of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The series revolves around a group of powerful teenagers who are taken in and mentored by the wizard Zordon. Through training and the use of assault machines called Zords, the teens are able to morph into the Power Rangers. Their main enemy was Rita Repulsa. Since then, the Power Rangers have appeared in various additional television series and feature films that are still being created today.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) is not canon to the Power Rangers TV show, which can be surprising considering just how popular the film is. While Mighty Morphin Power Rangers aired 145 episodes across three seasons, the original Power Rangers movie is also responsible for the 1990s’ Power Rangers mania. Power Rangers: The Movie made $66,4 million at the box office on a $15 million budget.
The first Power Rangers movie saw White Ranger Tommy Oliver leading his team of Power Rangers against Ivan Ooze, an intergalactic villain who wanted revenge on Zordon. Even though the Power Rangers movie repeated some classic Power Rangers tropes, it felt bigger and bolder than anything the series had done. Still, in terms of canon, Power Rangers: The Movie and the Power Rangers TV show are two separate things.

The Power Rangers costumes are part of the franchise's charm, and they often get some incredible redesigns in the shows and movies. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers costumes are arguably the most recognizable suits in the Power Rangers universe. However, some of the best Power Rangers costume changes are not from the Zordon Era.
Battle Modes, Battlizer Modes, and special shields are just a few examples of how Power Rangers' suits can change during a show. The Power Rangers movies, namely the 1995 Mighty Morphin film and the 2017 reboot, also offered some unique Power Rangers suits. Here are the 10 most awesome Power Rangers costume redesigns and why they happened.

The Power Rangers series has almost always used footage from its parent series, Super Sentai, to adapt the latter show, and it’s unlikely that this will not happen in the future. As an adaptation from Japanese media to North American television, it’s remarkable that this aspect of culture and entertainment can be shared across an international audience, even with elements changed to suit some cultural differences. However, with every single season of Power Rangers since 1993 adapting a series of Super Sentai, it’s reasonable to wonder whether the Power Rangers will ever blaze their own trail.

Actor Jason David Frank, who originated the role of the Green Ranger in the original “Power Rangers” TV series and became a staple of the franchise, has died at the age of 49, his representative confirmed to TheWrap.
A cause of death was not immediately made public.
Frank played Tommy Oliver in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” when it debuted on Fox Kids in 1993, inhabiting the role of the Green Ranger. While Oliver was only supposed to appear in a limited number of episodes, the character was so popular that Frank returned as the White Ranger and would be a fan-favorite for decades to come.
Frank and the cast would reprise their roles on the big screen in the 1995 film “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” as well as the 1997 sequel “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.”
Frank left the TV series in 1997 but reprised the role in one-off cameos in further spinoffs and continuations later on.

The Red Ranger in Power Rangers is usually the leader of the team, the one who gets the most prominent focus on the team and the most action figures! But which one is the best? We tried to settle that by ranking all the Red Rangers from the TV show and movies. Sorry, Supersonic Red Ranger from the Boom Comics. You died beautifully. Sorry to Hyperforce Red as well, you deserve a burrito.
44. Nick Russell (Firass Dirani)
Power Rangers Mystic Force
Nick is not great. Mystic Force was squarely focused on him and that red blanket of his. He had few redeeming qualities besides driving his bike into the face of a monster. He turned to evil in the finale for no discernible reason!
He was so ready to give up when faced with adversity, his entire team had to rally him to keep going. What kind of leader is he?...
