Last movie from Claude Sautet, before his death in 2000. He was reportedly so happy by the public and critical reception of the movie that he didn't feel the need to make another one.
The line by Béart "You forgot you bag!" was ad-libbed.
The plot comes from a scene witnessed in a cafe 25 years before the movie was made: director Claude Sautet saw an old man writing a check to a young woman who didn't seem related to the man. It inspired him to write the script, originally titled "The Young Woman and the Old Man".
Michel Serrault wore prosthetic hair for the part, which made him look quite a lot like the director, Claude Sautet.
At the 21st César Awards, the film was nominated 13 times, for all the main categories, including two nominations for Best Supporting Actor. It won twice, for Best Actor (Michel Serrault) and for Best Director (Claude Sautet).
