Perhaps it makes sense that Alex Parkinson’s feature debut would simply be a flip of the dimensions of his usual fare. The documentarian has long made a career out of the kind of nature documentary that is more about the people said nature affects than the nature itself. As in his 2024 Living With Leopards, Parkinson employs a curious conglomerate of archival and surveillance footage, first-hand accounts, interviews and, most pertinently, re-enactments, in apparent attempt to dramatize how the natural world can inspire community, chosen family and unusually strong bonds.
So went his 2019 documentary Last Breath, co-directed with Richard Da Costa, which chronicled the strange survival story of Chris Lemons, a saturation diver who somehow lived through nearly 40 minutes of oxygen deprivation in the North Sea, off the coast of Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The 2025 Last Breath is its Hollywood mirror: a slightly fictionalized account of the same incident made with a documentary feel.

During the depths of the pandemic, Las Vegas’ blindingly bustling main boulevard jerked to a grinding halt that highlighted the unconventional traits of the world’s biggest entertainment mecca — like how the grand doors to Sin City’s extravagant resorts are never closed nor unstaffed.
“They had to board up billion-dollar facilities with plywood because the doors don’t even have locks,” recalls Vegas host, philanthropist and actor Mark Shunock. “We take for granted how you can walk into a building on The Strip any time of day, seven days a week, and somebody’s there to greet you with a smile and ask, ‘What can I get you?’ But when was the last time somebody walked in and asked a server, ‘Are you Ok? What can I get you?’

You guys really seem to be digging on Michael Crichton huh? Well let’s look at what almost stopped his adaptations from happening. After a heck of a run from his adaptations both good and mediocre, Sphere would be a big enough bomb that it would follow with two straight sub-par adaptations before a quiet death of his worked being put on the big screen. The movie should have been a no doubt success with stars like Dustin Hoffman, Sam Jackson, Sharon Stone and a more than capable, Oscar winning, director in Barry Levinson. What we would end up with is one of the biggest bombs of the late 90s and a movie that is derided or outright forgotten from the annals of 90s cinema. Was it the cast, the story, or the general public being over Chricton things that didn’t have dinosaurs in it that was the culprit.

Putting a dystopian future on the big screen was nothing new in the early 2000s, especially when set in the realm of science-fiction. But making it work also within the action genre is a monumental ask. Really, how often did an all-out action flick want to make its viewers think…especially when the plot revolves around thinking be illegal.
But Kurt Wimmer gave it a go with Equilibrium, which wondered what the world might look like under a totalitarian rule…if there was a lot of gunplay involved. Brushed aside by the studio, critics and moviegoers, Equilibrium has gone on to become a minor cult favorite (including here on JoBlo), something Wimmer could have never seen coming…Just don’t go comparing it to The Matrix in front of him…
So, take off your thinking cap and load up your pistols as we find out: Wtf Happened to This Movie?...

The 90s were the salad days for sci-fi horror popcorn flicks. It was a time when wild B-movies got A-movie budgets and brought the visuals and campy excess of Roger Corman to the mainstream. One of the divisive films of that time is Species - a serviceable and sometimes maligned creature feature - currently #4 on Tubi's charts. The cheesy exploitation film is not without its flaws, but audiences are finding a lot to enjoy, as the once deep cable mainstay finds new life on streaming.
Species begins with a fun premise - a decoded alien message from space gives a team of unscrupulous scientists instructions on how to splice human and alien DNA. Because all scientists in movies have maxed out stats in ingenuity but zero foresight, they give life to Sil, an alien-human hybrid that is hellbent on reproducing and escapes her laboratory prison. The result is a...

Sharon Stone, the Hollywood legend that starred in films like Basic Instinct and Casino, has called out Sam Raimi, her director in 1995’s The Quick and the Dead, for being disloyal to her after she reportedly gave so much to him: “He didn’t thank me, he didn’t hire me again, he didn’t acknowledge the relationship.”
Stone appeared at the Torino Film Festival, where she spoke about Raimi, and what followed after they worked together in The Quick and the Dead. Also a producer on the film, Stone was involved in making some very important decisions, as she recounted:
“I had my great Italian cinematographer Dante Spinotti, and I was very blessed to produce and to have the opportunity to cast this film. The director Sam Raimi, who I had an opportunity to bring from B movies to A movies, and then he directed Spider-Man and became a very big A movie director.

Double Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has music projects in every corner of the world. But none is bigger than his long-term plan to build a better India through culture.
Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”) lifted the veil on his nation-building exercise and some of his immediate projects at a masterclass at the Internation Film Festival of India, in Goa, where he was interviewed by Variety’s Naman Ramachandran and introduced by filmmaker and festival director Shekhar Kapur.
The session was ostensibly held to honor the late playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, who died in 2022. But the scene for a wider-ranging session was set when the “Elizabeth” director said that for all his musical genius Rahman is also “an entrepreneur, a technologist and a spiritualist.”
The session got under way with a clip from “Headhunting to Beatboxing,” a documentary film that Rahman produced set in and about Nagaland, a part of India once considered to be wild frontier territory.

The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

On Sept. 14, the $2.3 billion Sphere in Las Vegas will see its 160,000-square-foot curved LED screen teleport the 20,000 or so guests to different “worlds,” with the mixed martial arts giant UFC set to take over the venue for what will be the Sphere’s first ever live sporting event.

Although Michael Crichton is best known as the author of Jurassic Park, the writer was actually responsible for another 90s thriller called Sphere. The sci-fi adventure follows a team of scientific experts who find themselves on a mission to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, where theyre supposed to locate and examine a crashed spaceship. Just like Jurassic Park, the film plays with humanitys innate fear of the unknown and the dangers of scientific ambition. While its far from Barry Levinsons best movie, Sphere deserves a little more credit for its inventive storytelling.
Sphere does a great job of creating tension and keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, but unfortunately, the movie never reached the same levels of success as Jurassic Park did. You know how the worst part about watching a movie is that you can see the whole screen? Well, luckily, the Las Vegas Sphere is reportedly gearing up to fix film’s biggest problem by spending $80 million to turn The Wizard of Oz into a Sphere-ized experience.
According to The New York Post, the venue is in talks with Warner Bros. Discovery to adapt the 1939 classic into a format that could be screened within the state-of-the-art, all-encompassing, LED-covered arena. In addition to expanding the visuals, the process would cut the film’s runtime from 102 minutes to 80. The whole production would likely cost around $80 million.

The main attraction at Sphere in Las Vegas is usually what happens inside the cutting edge venue, but on the Fourth of July there will be plenty to see and hear on the outside.

It may not be too much of an exaggeration to say that Jim Henson came up with the concept for an immersive video dome long before Sphere bubbled up in Las Vegas.
In the mid-1960s he developed an idea for a nightclub he called Cyclia – “the entertainment experience of the future” – that would feature crystal panels throughout the ceiling, floor and walls onto which films would be projected.
“Once an hour, a woman in a white leotard would rise from a pedestal in the center of the floor to have film projected on her body as she danced,” writes author Brian Jay Jones in Jim Henson: A Biography.
For better or worse, the psychedelia-inspired concept never became a reality. But it’s an example of the restless imagination that propelled Henson throughout his life. The incredible range of Henson’s creative urges come into focus in Ron Howard’s documentary Jim Henson Idea Man,...

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

Drew Carey isn’t the same man he was before he attended his first Phish concert. Any alternative comedy fan knows that Adult Swim’s April Fool’s Day programming is must-see television. The unabashedly weird late night network has turned messing with viewers into an annual tradition, often dropping buzzy new premieres in unexpected ways (like airing the entire “Aqua Teen Hunger Force” movie in a deliberately unwatchable picture-in-picture format) or replacing its existing programming with nonsensical content (like a 2021 stunt in which it satirically rebranded itself as a pre-school channel known as Adult Swim Jr.). Fans have come to expect a lot of Adult Swim on the internet’s least favorite holiday, and 2024 saw the network deliver one of its most viral triumphs to date.
One of the most anticipated shows on Adult Swim’s upcoming slate is Season 2 of “Smiling Friends,” Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack’s animated series about two mid-level employees at a company that promises to cheer up any sad...

I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. U2 wrapped the inaugural residency at Las Vegas’ $2.3 billion technical and visual marvel Sphere this weekend, closing out a 40-show run that started in September. Fittingly, the legendary band did so by bringing things full circle.
The shows commemorated one of U2’s most successful records, the chart-topping 1991 release Achtung Baby, played in its entirety with selected tracks from other U2 efforts over the years. To further honor the album, U2 bandmates Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Bram van den Berg (sitting in during the residency for an ailing Larry Mullen Jr.) welcomed Achtung Baby producer Daniel Lanois to the stage Saturday night to play guitar and sing backup on the track “One.”
“There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois,” Bono said in welcoming him up the back stairs with a request to the audience. “Show him your light,” and they did by holding up smartphone flashbulbs in a beautiful scene.
