Being partly responsible for turning George Clooney into a movie star, Steven Soderbergh knows a thing or two about spotting a hitmaker. Sure, Clooney had the looks, the charm, and a juicy part on the hit medical drama “E.R.” that gave him the opportunity to hone his craft, but in casting him to lead “Out of Sight,” and their most successful collaboration, “Ocean’s Eleven,” Soderbergh gave him a leg up few stars manage to receive today. Nowadays, it seems acting is a talent you have to be born with, and no one knows this better than recent Oscar-nominee Timothée Chalamet.
“It would appear Timothée Chalamet is a movie star,” said Soderbergh in a recent interview with Men’s Health. “Like, this guy can make movies hits, and they’re a wide range of movies. So, everybody’s chasing him. I don’t know him, but he seems to be making interesting choices.

There have been multiple takes on the life of British Intelligence Officers. While the James Bond franchise is considered by many to be the epitome of the genre, Kingsman provided a fresh take for many. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was another film about the life of British Intelligence Officers that turned the world on its head.
Fans can now add another name to this illustrious list—Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. The Michael Fassbender starrer, which hit the theatres in the US on 14 March 2025, has already carved its place in fans’ (and critics’) hearts.

We have some sad news to share today, as the official Wings Hauser page on social media has revealed that the prolific character actor passed away over the weekend at the age of 77. As the post reads, “Movie icon Wings Hauser took flight in the arms of his film & music partner, Cali Lili Hauser at their studio this weekend.“
Known for having one of the coolest names in cinema history, Wings Hauser was actually born Gerald Dwight Hauser on December 12, 1947. “Wings” was part of a stage name (Wings Livinryte) he used for a 1975 folk music album called Your Love Keeps Me Off the Streets, and he was credited as Wings Livinryte when he appeared on an episode of the TV series Cannon that same year. After that, he moved on to calling himself Wings Hauser.
Hauser made his screen debut with an uncredited appearance in the 1967 film First to Fight.

[Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in August 2017. It has since been updated to include more of Soderbergh’s films, including “Black Bag.”]
Steven Soderbergh’s directing career started with “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” a massive breakout that not only launched his career — it changed the industry of independent filmmaking in America. While struggling to find his footing after becoming a household name at age 26, Soderbergh never let himself become frozen by his early success or some preconceived notion of what his career would be. Instead, he dogmatically followed any story that piqued his interest, regardless if it was building the slick “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise or an experimental film he shot in his hometown with friends (“Schizopolis”).
He has been careful to build a career that was commercially viable so as to maximize his ability to be constantly creating and experimenting with films that were sometimes aggressively uncommercial. Along the way, he has fought to be as efficient a filmmaker as possible — constantly trying different approaches and new technology to make...

Steven Soderbergh and David Koepp had a very offbeat idea for their next movie.
“David and I talked about what it would be like if George and Martha were spies,” Soderbergh says. “We wanted to make an espionage version of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.'”
The result is “Black Bag,” a sleek, sexy and frequently surprising thriller that opens in theaters on Friday. It may be the breeziest movie Soderbergh has made since he stuffed George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in the trunk of a car for “Out of Sight.” Only this time, it’s Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett providing the romantic sparks as George Woodhouse and Kathryn St. Jean, intelligence operatives whose marriage is threatened after he discovers that one of their colleagues is a traitor. The twist is Kathryn is a prime suspect.

Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is the kind of old-fashioned caper that the filmmaker can make in his sleep, and unfortunately in this case, it feels as if he did just that. Like the Ocean’s series, the film seeks to pay tribute to a bygone era of genre cool—to a brand of popular escapist cinema where beautiful people casually navigated high-stakes situations while trading blithe bon mots. That it ultimately comes to feel so inconsequential may be partly by design, but it’s hard not to wish that the newly prolific Soderbergh had woken up a bit to give the routine plot machinations in this London-set spy yarn the same spark that he’s brought to similar genre throwbacks in the past, among them 1998’s Out of Sight.

Exclusive: Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows) has been cast in the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie Street Smart.
The drama feature heralds Hardwicke’s return to her storytelling roots from such past work as Lords of Dogtown and Thirteen, while revisiting her exploration of found-family dynamics in Twilight. She co-wrote Street Smart with New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter Nic Sheff (13 Reasons Why).
Hardwicke and producers Natalie Marciano and Jamie R. Thompson began principal photography at the end of January in Los Angeles.
Street Smart offers a gripping look into the lives of a lively group of unhoused young adults in the iconic beach town of Venice, CA. They come together with humor and a bit of Robin Hood-style larceny, forging unbreakable bonds and redefining what it means to be a family.

Continuing to prove that retirement is not just overrated but a real impediment to an artist’s best work, in “Black Bag,” Steven Soderbergh dashes off a sleek little genre exercise. It’s a doodle really, at a stage in his career when he’s clearly just having fun, yet it proves to be one of his smartest and sexiest films yet. Heading up an impeccable cast are Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, who play George Woodhouse and Kathryn St. Jean, a Nick and Nora-like pair of spies so deeply, foolishly in love that they find it inconceivable that the mole in the British intelligence agency for which they both work could well be their spouse.
Most successful marriages are built on trust. Once that much is established, then there’s room — if not a psychological need — for both parties to maintain a sort of secret garden where they can keep a few things private.

There is a brief mention of suicide.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers, the teenage chosen one given supernatural abilities to fight the forces of darkness. The cult phenomenon ran for seven seasons before it ended in 2003. Its spinoff, Angel, ran for another year after Buffy ended.
Buffy's big first love was Angel, the 240-year-old vampire with a soul. Buffy and Angel were star-crossed lovers. While the attraction was immediate, a vampire and the slayer dating was never going to be easy. They did their best to resist and deny their feelings for each other, but in the end, love won out. For a while, anyway.
Buffy and Angel Share Their First Kiss in Season One
When Angel first pops up in Buffy's path to warn her about the Harvest and the Master's plan, Buffy finds him to be "dark, gorgeous in an annoying sort of way.

Set your notifications. Cancel Wednesday night trivia. If you’re old like me, actually get out your red pen and mark your calendar. Seven movies are leaving Netflix this month, and you’ll want to be sure to watch them before they say farewell.
One of them is an Oscar-winning Best Picture. Another, in the eyes of many, should have been. One is a sheer guilty pleasure.
There’s cutting-edge satire, vitally important social commentary, and quite possibly the best film ever made in its particular sub-genre.
Seven movies to stream on Netflix before they leave in March
I will caution you about one thing: with a minor exception or two, these movies tend toward the violent, from the outright physical to the intensely emotional. There are some comic moments to be found and perhaps a tiny bit of offbeat romance, but these are generally high-octane, in-your-face adventures. However – and...

The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."
A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...

These days, major Hollywood stars split their time between the small and big screens pretty reliably; hell, it seems like Nicole Kidman has a new TV project every other week. Back in the 1990s and 2000s, though, television was regarded as a lesser medium, meaning that small-screen actors were constantly trying to become big movie stars and leave their TV roots firmly in the rearview mirror. That's precisely why, after five seasons as Dr. Doug Ross, George Clooney left "ER" for greener, more cinematic pastures.
It probably sounds like an oversimplification to say that Clooney stopped playing Doug Ross so that he could focus on his film career, but that's essentially ... exactly what happened! Though Clooney made movies like "Out of Sight" and his often-maligned Caped Crusader flick "Batman & Robin" while playing Doug Ross, filming a network TV show with 20-odd episodes a season is a huge time commitment.

Monster-in-Law, Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda's rom-com from 2005, is a streaming hit on Hulu, where it currently sits at number five on the streamer. The film follows Charlie (Lopez) who falls for a doctor named Kevin (Michael Vartan). After a period of dating, the couple become engaged, but that's when things take a turn for the worst. Kevin's mother, Viola (Fonda), will stop at nothing to do whatever she can to break the relationship up before they get married.
The film was a box office hit when it debuted on May 13, 2005, making over $155 million at the worldwide box office on a production budget of only $43 million. Monster-in-Law was also good counter-programming to Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which opened later that month. It has been 27 years since Condon redefined himself after premiering Gods and Monsters at Sundance, 32 years since Kiss of the Spider Woman opened on Broadway and won seven Tony Awards, and 40 years since the original Hector Babenco-directed film drew four Oscar nominations with the late William Hurt winning Best Actor. One of the best parts of covering the Sundance Film Festival is getting to know the filmmakers and casts, and hearing their stories of struggle to get films made, accepted and the chance to play on a big stage that has launched some of Hollywood’s great careers.
I would be hard pressed to find a group of filmmakers to root harder for than the ones who directed Didn’t Die, a modestly budgeted zombie film that will premiere Tuesday in the festival’s Midnight Madness lineup. Meera Menon directed a film in which a young podcast host clings to her ever-shrinking audience in a zombie apocalypse, with overriding themes that sprang from Covid and the double strikes, about how human nature and a sense of humor is sometimes all we as we try to overcome loss and carry on.
That context takes on extra meaning with the makers of Didn’t Die.

Jennifer Lopez does not have the best reputation in the film industry. Several of her acting performances have been considered abysmal, as she has been a part of some really bad films. Most infamously this includes Gigli, a 2003 Ben Affleck movie that achieved a mere 6% on Rotten Tomatoes. Other Lopez films, such as The Boy Next Door, Feel the Noise, Jack, and The Wedding Planner have also managed to get Tomatometers that are under 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. In critics' eyes, Lopez has had a very rotten streak.
This is not true of every Lopez movie, however, as she has been in some projects that were critical darlings. Her music documentaries are generally fairly well-received, including The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. The 1998 crime drama Out of Sight got a universally positive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lopez's performance in Hustlers was also praised back in 2019, and it got an 88% Tomatometer.

No one can say that Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh delivers the same movie time after time. In an eclectic three-decade career, he has directed crowd-pleasing all-star vehicles, action comedies, political dramas, micro-mini experimental works, true-life story (“Erin Brockovich”) and even a film starring porn actress Sasha Grey (“The Girlfriend Experience”).
In addition to his Oscar success, Soderbergh has also found success bringing his singular vision to the small screen, winning an Emmy for directing and editing the TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” (which isn’t included on this list of big screen outings). He’s also been nominated twice as a director on “The Knick,” as a cinematographer on “Behind the Candelabra” and as a producer on “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” “His Way” and “Godless.”

Director Steven Soderbergh released his annual "Seen, Read" list of all the movies, TV shows, plays, books, and more he consumed in 2024. The famous helmer of Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Ocean's Eleven consumed a massive amount of content. But you'd be surprised to learn that the man who was once nominated for two movies for Best Director in one year watched the prequest Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (twice), Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Soderbergh is known to be one of the busiest directors / producers / cinematographers in Hollywood, oftentimes directing and releasing multiple films per year. As an example, in 2023 alone, he directed Magic Mike's Last Dance and multiple episodes of TV shows, Command Z and Full Circle. Yet he also finds the time to watch and read dozens of films, shows, and books.

One of the reasons that Den of Thieves felt like such a breath of fresh air is that it was one of the few gritty heist films in quite some time. Although there was a generation in which modern classics like Out of Sight and Heat were coming out at a more frequent pace, heist films have begun to decline in recent years; in fact, the few that have stood out have had to settle for being part of a larger franchise, such as Ant-Man and Fast Five. Den of Thieves made no apologies about being old-fashioned, but showed a remarkable attention-to-detail in how it put together its robbery scenes and gathered an impressive ensemble cast. Although its success heightened the expectations for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, those who appreciate gritty heist thrillers need to check out the underrated crime film Triple 9.

Jennifer Lopez keeps having to remind Judy Robles that she deserves all the attention she’s been getting as the pair promote “Unstoppable.” The inspirational sports drama has been earning awards buzz, and at screenings, Robles has been greeted with standing ovations. Audiences are clearly impressed by how successfully this single mom raised her son, Anthony, despite having to endure financial hardships and an abusive relationship.
“I tell her all the time, ‘You need to own who you are and what you’ve done,’” Lopez says. “You’re inspiring every mother who has ever struggled. You really have triumphed. You’ve raised a son who has become a leader, and you deserve credit.’ But she’s very humble.”
Anthony, as “Unstoppable” watchers know, became a college wrestling champ, an improbable accomplishment given that he was born with only one leg. Judy was there on the sidelines, unexpectedly learning the same...

Did Batman & Robin teach George Clooney an important lesson? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Yes, the infamous 1997 superhero flick that tanked both critically and commercially wasn’t just a low point for fans but also for George Clooney himself. And yet, the Caped Crusader’s stumble became the ultimate turning point. Clooney didn’t just reflect on the flop—he flipped the script on his career.
“It’s really easy to pick: Batman & Robin. That’s not a joke,” he admitted. “Up until that moment, I was an actor only concerned with finding work. After the failure of that film creatively, I understood that I needed to take control of the films I made, not just the role.”
What followed was nothing short of a Hollywood masterclass. Clooney traded bat-nipples for brilliance, delivering knockout performances in Out of Sight, Three Kings, and O Brother, Where Art Thou?. These weren’t...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Reflecting on the past year in film, I find myself at an interesting crossroads where my alignment with the consensus is back off the axis. After 2022 left me feeling a bit out in the weeds regarding cinema culture, last year I was more in tune with the overall vibes––several favorites picked up Academy Awards, including Best Picture. This year is similar to 2022 for me, in that I won’t be surprised if not a single one of my top ten even gets a nomination.
But that doesn’t mean it was a poor year in my eyes; quite the contrary. From massive big swings by long-dormant auteurs or those recently bursting on the scene, to quiet dramas with volumes to say, to a bevy of formally...

The enemies-to-lovers trope is extremely popular with rom-com fans, but some movies do it better than others. Rom-coms have existed in Hollywood for almost as long as movies, with the first two – Sherlock Jr. and Girl Shy – coming out as silent films in 1924. The movies are popular with audiences due to their balanced combination of romance, drama, and comedy. However, the large amount of variation in tropes makes the movies appealing as well.
One of the most popular tropes in rom-com movies is enemies-to-lovers. Enemies-to-lovers rom-coms are the perfect pick to watch after a long week. Movies with this trope include zippier dialogue, sexual tension, and relatable conflicts. These stories function on the premise that there's a thin line between love and hate. Moreover, the scripts typically have compelling character development before the couple gets together, making it easier to emotionally invest in them. Ultimately, some of the best rom-coms...

George Clooney might seem like a fun-loving sort, but he is a man who takes his movie stardom seriously. Yes, he's a notorious practical joker who once affixed a frame to Brad Pitt's license plate that read "F*** Cops," but, really, when he's not trying to get his "Ocean's Eleven" co-star arrested, he cares deeply about his craft. If you doubt this, you should perhaps read the book "George Clooney: Anatomy of an Actor," which examines ten of his most significant film performances in some detail — and, yes, I am just recommending this book because I wrote it.
Though Clooney does come from a long line of entertainers, most prominent among them his aunt Rosemary Clooney, he's more than earned his A-list stature. After struggling throughout the 1980s by appearing in past-their-prime sitcoms ("The Facts of Life") and literally...

Some movie formulas are eternal and cannot be trifled with. It's a proven fact now that no matter how many times Hollywood pumps out a Hallmark Christmas movie or a big city rom-com, niche audiences will be there to gobble it up. The target audiences for these movies are generally easy to please, which causes filmmakers to lose their eye for meticulous detail and resort to recycling and replicating. Tropes become tropes for a reason, after all. Some subgenres, however, rely so heavily on fresh originality that they cannot be endlessly recycled for profit. This is the problem that the Heist thriller genre faces.
Audiences are fed up with some recent heist thriller releases, citing laziness and unoriginality. Fans have every reason to have high standards.

James Gunn is once again uniting a team of super-powered misfits in the new animated DC series, “Creature Commandos.” The “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad” filmmaker — and co-head of the new DC Universe — unites a cast full of familiar faces, including some you’ll recognize from “The Suicide Squad,” as a roster of less familiar superheroes, including Rick Flagg Sr., GI Robot and The Bride.

Contrary to the "Eleven" in its title, only 10 of the main ensemble actors involved in "Ocean's Eleven" were credited for the movie. Indeed, despite being a major player, then-future Marvel Cinematic Universe star Don Cheadle's name doesn't appear at all in the film's credits.
Cheadle's absence from the credits has confused fans of the Steven Soderbergh heist movie since its release in 2001. The actor was already a known quantity in Hollywood by the time the movie came out, and his character, the questionably Cockney-accented explosives expert Basher Tarr, gets plenty of screen time in the movie. Yet, if you pop over to IMDb, Cheadle is currently the 77th person on the cast credits page for "Ocean's Eleven," under the "uncredited" section after characters with names like "Dog Track Gambler" and "Woman in Casino." What gives? Cheadle himself seems to have rarely spoken about the issue on the record, although...

Beyond Marvel and DC's cinematic universes, legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has also built one of his own. From the moment Reservoir Dogs first hit the big screen, it's been readily apparent that Tarantino wears his cinematic influences on his sleeve. Ever since, fans have scoured his films for references and Easter Eggs to other classic or contemporary movies, but hiding in plain sight was something even more interesting: a shared cinematic universe.
Anyone who's ever looked close enough at a Quentin Tarantino film has stumbled upon the secret he's been hiding in plain sight. Each of his movies is connected in some way, shape, or form, ranging from the in-universe TV show Fox Force Five to the Vega Brothers, who appear in iconic films like Pulp Fiction and the aforementioned Reservoir Dogs.

When it comes to Hollywood’s handsome hunks, no one can beat George Clooney. Think of charm, sophistication, and that dazzling smile that graced red carpets and screens for decades. But behind that aura lies a career that’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially when it comes to the box office.
Sure, Clooney’s Hollywood royalty, but his journey in the film industry has had its fair share of big wins and surprising stumbles. Take Gravity for instance, a cinematic masterpiece that grossed a hefty box office success and cemented Clooney’s place as a bankable star. But besides floating in space with Sandra Bullock, Clooney went through challenges before hitting another jackpot.

War Machine himself, Don Cheadle, is set to star in the crime thriller Canyon for Alcon Entertainment, taking on the role of a jazz-playing killer. Deadline reports that veteran music video director Colin Tilley, who made his feature directorial debut with Halsey’s concept horror film If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, will be taking of the helm of Canyon, working from a screenplay by John Wick and Nobody writer Derek Kolstad.
The story Kolstad has crafted for this one takes place over the course of one scorching night. Canyon — a part-time jazz musician and full-time killer — finds himself the unlikely protector of a young siren pulled into a turf war between feuding crime families. When you mix crime, murder, and jazz, I immediately think of the 1992 John Woo classic Hard Boiled – which would be a great film for the makers of this movie to draw inspiration from.

Ocean's 14 looks like it's finally going to happen - just don't expect it to have that title if George Clooney gets his way. After Clooney broke through with his role in ER, it took him a few years to ascend to movie stardom. After some notable fires like Batman & Robin, he found his stride with movies like Out of Sight and Three Kings. It was the Ocean's movie franchise that cemented his A-list status, with Clooney's Danny Ocean leading an all-star ensemble through three movies.
Steven Soderbergh helmed the Clooney era, with all three films being slick, stylish, and breezy pieces of entertainment. Clooney seemingly retired from Danny Ocean with Ocean's 13 and skipped out on 2018's Ocean's 8, where Danny's younger sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock) took over heisting duties. The series has both a prequel and sequel in development, and while Soderbergh almost certainly won't be returning for the latter,...

Escape at Dannemora feels like a cross between The Shawshank Redemption and Out of Sight. However, this Showtime original turned Netflix offering is about a lot more than two men breaking out of prison. The crime drama based on a true story is headlined by Benicio del Toro, Paul Dano, and Rosanna Arquette -- the latter of whom won Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film at the Golden Globes for her truly understated performance. But they're not the only big names working on the seven-episode series.

Quentin Tarantino became a household name after Pulp Fiction, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. And while that film is getting a 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition, Blu-ray.com has announced the 4K release of Tarantino’s follow-up — Jackie Brown. The movie is an adaptation of the Elmore Leonard book, Rum Punch, and the 1997 film stars starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, and Michael Keaton. This release is expected to hit retailers in the second half of January.
The description reads,
“When flight attendant Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) is busted smuggling money for her arms dealer boss, Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson), agent Ray Nicolette (Michael Keaton) and detective Mark Dargus (Michael Bowen) want her help to bring down Robbie. Facing jail time for her silence or death for her cooperation, Brown decides instead to double-cross both parties and make off with the smuggled money.

Before it was commonplace in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the idea of a shared universe across movies was a delight for audiences. It was exciting that the characters in Chasing Amy, Clerks, and Mallrats all seemed to know each other, in part through Jay and Silent Bob. Michael Keaton reprising his role as Ray Nicolette from Jackie Brown in Stephen Soderbergh's Out of Sight was a fun surprise for people who read the Elmore Leonard novels which inspired the two movies. Quentin Tarantino was especially obsessed with this idea, with characters sharing connections across movies like Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but even his faux brand of Red Apple cigarettes being advertised by Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) in Once Upon a Time... Outside of established IP, there are few sure things in Hollywood filmmaking. There was a time when John Wayne astride a horse was a license to print money, ditto Clint Eastwood (who also packed 'em in whilst brandishing a shield and a hand cannon). And there was that remarkable decade-long run where Rob Reiner standing behind the camera meant guaranteed critical, if not full-on commercial success.
Hot streaks don't just happen like this, so when it looks like a shooter is heating up, studios line up to place the heaviest of bets on their next roll. Such was the case with the team of star Will Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld after the blockbuster breakthrough of 1997's "Men in Black." This was Smith's first smash outside of an ensemble (one he almost turned down), and Sonnenfeld's fourth box office hit after "The Addams Family,...
