Hugh Hudson, director of the Oscar-winning classic "Chariots of Fire," has passed away at the age of 86. According to a statement released by his family, Hudson "died at Charing Cross hospital on 10 February after a short illness. He is survived by his wife, Maryam, his son, Thomas, and his first wife, Sue."
Hudson's fact-based drama about British runners Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and Eric Liddell (Ian Charleston) was a surprise critical and commercial smash in 1981, earning four Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and out-grossing splashy studio releases like "For Your Eyes Only" and "Clash of the Titans." The film became a pop cultural phenomenon due in part to Vangelis' main theme, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in 1982 and inspired parodies in films like "Mr. Mom" and "National Lampoon's Vacation." The Oscar-nominated British filmmaker Hugh Hudson has passed away. Famous for his documentary and advertising work, Hudson shot Chariots of Fire, one of the most celebrated films in British history, and Best Picture winner at the 1981 Oscars ceremony. Hudson was 86 when he passed away on Friday at Charing Cross hospital in London after a brief illness.
Hudson directed seven films throughout his career, including Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), Revolution, Lost Angels, and more. Hailed as a maker of lasting cinema, Hudson’s Revolution, starring Al Pacino, was a box office bomb, earning roughly 350,000 against a reported 29 million budget. The backlash left a lasting impression on Hudson and compelled Pacino to exit the acting scene for roughly four years.

Susan Lacy felt it was “logical” to divide her Jane Fonda documentary into the titular five acts. Reading the Oscar-winning actress’s autobiography “My Life So Far,” Lacy zeroed in on a line she wrote about how “she wanted to understand her first two acts … in order to understand how to live her third.” Yet the documentarian knew that three acts weren’t enough. “She was dividing her life into thirds,” Lacy explains, “and it was very obvious from her book that the four men in her life … had influenced who she was.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Lacy above.

“Jane Fonda in Five Acts” could easily have been a 10-hour miniseries; it would take at least two hours merely to go through each of her 50 or so film performances. As a second-generation star, an outspoken activist, an entrepreneur and feminist icon, Fonda almost seems like a living metaphor for the uneasy and constantly changing post-wwii era.
If she didn’t actually exist, Jane Wagner and Lily Tomlin would have had to make her up as a character in “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe.” But she does exist, and she’s still here, and documentarian Susan Lacy (“Spielberg”) digs deep into Fonda’s life to create a film (for HBO) that’s an audio-visual supplement to the actress’ fascinating 2005 memoir (“My Life So Far”), a frank examination of Fonda’s personal evolution, and a celebration of her role in popular culture.

Actress Jane Fonda has always been candid about her complicated relationship with her dad, Henry Fonda. But in a revealing new interview, the 80-year-old star opened up about her mom Frances Ford Seymour's tragic 1950 suicide when Jane was just 12 years old. "If you have a parent who is not capable of showing up, not capable of reflecting you back through eyes of love, it has a big impact on your sense of self," Jane recently told Jess Cagle for PeopleTV of her mother's battle with bipolar disorder before her death. "As a child, you always think it was your fault… because the child can’t blame the adult, because they depend on the adult for survival. It takes a long time to get over the guilt," she continued. “I never felt he really got the recognition for being what I call a personal filmmaker,” reveals “Spielberg” director Susan Lacy. As a documentarian, Lacy has always been fascinated by “that connection between the life and the work,” so in crafting this biographical look at Steven Spielberg‘s career, she “wanted to find Steven in those films that he’s made.” Now the HBO film has received an Emmy nomination for Best Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Near the beginning of Jane Fonda in Five Acts, Fonda and Lily Tomlin indulge in a bit of kitchen-table kibitzing about Hollywood hierarchy as perceived by Vanity Fair. The moment stands out in Susan Lacy's compelling, fluidly constructed documentary, not just for its off-the-cuff irreverence but because of its banter. Otherwise, notwithstanding the talking-head commentary of friends, colleagues and exes, this is very much a first-person story, taking its narrative cues from Fonda's self-searching 2005 autobiography.

Sometimes, all it takes is something housed in a cave to stir up some serious controversy. The first trailer for the Antonio Banderas-led Finding Altamira has arrived, following an archaeologist (Banderas) in 1879 who stumbles upon paintings with his daughter in a cave in northern Spain that brings to question the current conceptions of faith and being.
These revelations — and the questions they bring with them — threaten to tear apart his familial life, as well as the world at large, as the understanding of wall paintings over 10,000 years old strike at the hearts and minds of the faithful. The film is directed by Hugh Hudson (Chariots of Fire), and also stars Rupert Everett, Irene Escolar, Tábata Cerezo, Javivi, and About Elly and Paterson‘s Golshifteh Farahani.

Dedicated chairman of Granada who championed high-quality popular TV
Sir Denis Forman, who has died aged 95, was a driving force in Granada TV, one of the leaders in the first batch of independent regional commercial television companies, from its beginnings in the mid-1950s through to his lengthy spell as chairman (1974-87). Though scarcely ever named as producer, he was directly responsible for many programmes and ran his favourite series as personal fiefdoms. His greatest achievement in this capacity was The Jewel in the Crown (1984), based upon the Raj Quartet novels by Paul Scott.
Forman threw himself headlong into many other enthusiasms, including atheism, battle drill, Mozart and Scottish country dancing. A large man in every sense, he was affable, eloquent and determined. At Granada's Manchester studios in the early days, the shortest path to lunchtime refreshment was barred by a waist-high wall. Forman would lead the way and, despite...

Jane Fonda Makes Her Peace

Over her more than fifty years on the screen and in the public eye, Jane Fonda has worn more hats than any performer of her generation: daughter of Hollywood royalty (Henry Fonda), Oscar-winning actress, polarizing activist, fitness guru, best-selling author, Broadway star, mother, grandmother and wife, to three of their respective generation’s most influential men (director Roger Vadim, activist/politician Tom Hayden, media titan Ted Turner). Now in her 74th year (she turns 75 in December), Jane Fonda graces the screen again in director Bruce Beresford’s “Peace, Love and Misunderstanding,” a generation gap comedy-drama about an uptight career woman (Catherine Keener) who, after leaving her husband, brings her two kids (Elizabeth Olsen and Nat Wolff) to Woodstock, New York where her estranged mother (Fonda), a former and current hippie, lives on a sprawling farm. We couldn’t stop gawping at Jane Fonda in Harper’s Bazaar. She’s “73 and a half” years old, guys, and looks better than most people a good five decades younger. And if that dress looks familiar, it’s the same dotty Stella McCartney number Kate Winslet wore to the Mildred Pierce premiere a while ago. And even though we love us some Kate, we think that Jane is working it way better than she is. The sideboob isn’t putting us off either, and sideboob almost always puts us off.
She gives a great interview too especially about her personal life (she’s dating music producer Richard Perry), saying, “When I was researching myself, I wondered, is there a ‘there’ there? Or am I just a hollow person who gets filled up by whatever man I’m with? I’m fine with women. My problem is always with men — you know,...

Fonda, 73, was set to discuss her recently-published book “Prime Time” on QVC this Saturday, but she says that the network uninvited her after customers called to complain.
QVC reportedly said in a statement that it had canceled Fonda’s appearance but did not say why.

Colin Firth and Natalie Portman will be respectively presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award for Actor and Actress at the 22nd annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Awards Gala will kick off the 2011 awards season on Saturday, January 8 at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
This award is very fitting for both actors. Firth is receiving major Oscar buzz for his performance as King George VI in "The King's Speech," and Portman for Darren Aronofsky's "The Black Swan."
I'm excited for these two actors, and I'm excited for the Film fest. I'm a Palm Springs resident so this is good news! Here's the complete press release:

Absolut tries for an inspiring new viral ad...and promptly gets called out for aping a design master
Just a couple days ago, Absolut revealed its newest series of ads by Tbwa/Chiat/Day with the tagline "Doing something differently leads to something exceptional." Watch the spot, and it's kind of heartwarming--as Absolut is happy to write on its YouTube page, "A group of artists come together in locations around the world to create art pieces that spell out the philosophy of Absolut Vodka." Awww! But not so fast: Commentary about the ads--which are being flogged in a Facebook-based campaign, among other places--immediately pointed out the eerie similarity with a long-running project, "This I Have Learned in My Life So Far," by massively influential graphic designer Stegan Sagmeister:
But it doesn't quite end there: As a commenter on that video notes, the idea of bending unusual materials into the service...

Jane Fonda says the internet has changed her life. The 71-year-old actress had barely used a computer before starting an online diary on her website, janefonda.com, but feels closer to her fans after giving them regular updates about her new Broadway play "33 Variations."
She said: "I thought it would be interesting to bring people through the process with me. I was a complete Luddite before. I only Googled for the first time this past summer."
"But this is a gratifying experience and I hear from all sorts of people, many of whom say they have left the theatre inspired by this play."
As well as embracing new technology, Jane is also reaching out to her fans by penning a follow-up to her 2005 autobiography 'My Life So Far'.

Paris -- The 19th Dinard Festival of British Film will open with the 1999 movie "My Life So Far," as part of a tribute to director Hugh Hudson.
Hudson is due in the Brittany beach resort to introduce a retrospective of his films including the multiple Oscar-winning Olympic tale "Chariots of Fire" and the Tarzan adaptation "Greystoke." There also will be a retrospective on the films based on Daphne Du Maurier's work, including Alfred Hitchcock's "Rebecca" and "The Birds" and Nicolas Roeg's "Don't Look Now."
Six independent British films will compete for Dinard's Golden Hitchcock Trophy. The Anglo-French jury this year is presided over by Gallic actor Lambert Wilson.
Other French premiere screenings scheduled include "The Duchess," directed by Saul Dibb and starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes; Steve McQueen's hard-hitting Bobby Sands prison drama, "Hunger"; and Terence Davies' poetic ode to Liverpool, "Of Time and the City.
