The world of Ghostbusters continues to expand, but now with an animated movie, and this new project can be the spiritual successor to one of the best animated shows of the 1980s. Back in 1984, the world met a group of parapsychologists investigating and eliminating ghosts in New York City in the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters. Directed by Ivan Reitman and created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters followed the title team, formed by Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Aykroyd), Spengler (Ramis), and Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), on their ghost-hunting adventures.
The huge success of Ghostbusters made way for a franchise with a direct sequel, a failed reboot in 2016, and a second reboot with two movies, along with two animated TV shows, video games, and lots of merch. While a third movie in the current reboot timeline is in development, the Ghostbusters franchise is now also preparing another movie, but this one will be animated.

Sony is developing another new Ghostbusters movie, but this one will be a little different from the recent live-action films. The studio is once again set on expanding the franchise, this time with an animated Ghostbusters movie from Sony Animation – and Netflix. There's gotta be a joke in there about crossing streams. See if you can figure it out.
According to Deadline, Sony is currently developing an animated Ghostbusters movie for Netflix. The project, which doesn't have a title just yet, is reportedly in early development with director Kris Hearn and is said to be separate from Netflix's upcoming Ghostbusters animated series. Hearn is a longtime animator who served as a storyboard artist on Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs before making his directorial debut with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. He also directed the animated filmThe Willoughbys, which Netflix released in 2020.

Ernie Hudson has played many roles, but one stands out the most: the one of Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters franchise. The actor played the character in all the films but didn't voice him in any of the two animated series.
Speaking to Brittany Frederick of Cbr to promote his new project, Angry Birds: Mystery Island, Hudson also addressed one of his most recognizable roles: Winston. The actor, who voices Marlon in the new animated series' Episode 4, "A-squawk-alypse Now," noted he would love to do more voice work in the future. That also applies to his Ghostbusters character, whom he played in all four films, but not the animated series, and he would like the chance in the future.

Ernie Hudson is known worldwide for his movie and TV roles, but most fans don't know that he's also a fantastic voice actor. Angry Birds: Mystery Island features Hudson in the scene-stealing role of Marlon, who surprises the main characters with his giant personality. And while it's just the latest of many voice acting roles the Ghostbusters star has had over his career, Hudson spoke to Cbr about how he's long wanted to spend more time in the animated space.
In this interview, Hudson talked about portraying Marlon in Angry Birds: Mystery Island Season 1, Episode 4, "A-squawk-alypse Now," and why the role was so much fun for him. He also looked back on his previous voice acting parts -- and the ones he didn't get, like not voicing Winston Zeddemore in animated follow-ups The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. Find out why voice acting is a passion for one of the most beloved actors working today.

Netflix announced a Ghostbusters animated series back in 2022, but the development of the series has been quiet until now. 1984's Ghostbusters became such a hit with children around the world that before a sequel arrived in 1989, the franchise spun off into a popular animated series titled The Real Ghostbusters, which ran for seven seasons. A follow-up, Extreme Ghostbusters, aired in 1997 for one season. For nearly three decades, there have been attempts to get a new Ghostbusters series off the ground, but with little success.
According to Variety, Netflix has finally given the green light to a new 3D-animated Ghostbusters series. Originally announced two years ago, a brand new “Ghostbusters” animated series has been officially given the green light over at Netflix this week, Variety reports tonight.
The website notes in their report tonight, “In addition, Variety has learned that Elliott Kalan has boarded the project as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.”
Elliot Kalan served as the head writer for Netflix’s version of the classic series “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” and he was also formerly a writer for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
“Exact plot details are still under wraps, but sources say the 3D animated series will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films,” Variety also previews.
Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) will produce for Sony Pictures Animation.
The Ghostbusters franchise has of course made a mark on the world of animation in the past, with “The Real Ghostbusters” in the 1980s and “Extreme Ghostbusters” in the 1990s.

Netflix has greenlit the animated “Ghostbusters” series first announced in 2022, Variety has learned exclusively from sources. In addition, Variety has learned that Elliott Kalan has boarded the project as writer and executive producer.
The show was first reported to be in development at the streamer back in June 2022. Exact plot details are still under wraps, but sources say the 3D animated series will be tonally in line with the recent “Ghostbusters” films.
As previously reported, the series hails from Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action features “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” with Reitman directing the former and Kenan directing the latter. Production on the series will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.

The Ghostbusters are back to spook the Netflix movie chart as Frozen Empire debuted on the platform in the U.S. and immediately took the top spot away from Land of Bad. It is probably not news that will come as a shock to anyone who has paid attention to the streaming giants movie chart, which frequently sees new releases get at least a little time as their most streamed film.

Recent Ghostbusters films set a low bar, leaving doubt about the success of the new animated series on Netflix. The Real Ghostbusters is a tough act to follow as one of the most successful cartoons of the '80s and '90s. Animation offers endless storytelling possibilities and an incredible visual spectrum for the Ghostbusters franchise.
The newly-announced Netflix animated Ghostbusters series may be facing a major problem it can't avoid. The 40-year-old franchise has had its ups and downs over the decades, with the original being known as one of the best comedies of all time and the most recent film, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire receiving dismal reviews across the board. Ghost Corps, the production house behind 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife, is teaming up with Netflix to release an animated series. Jason Reitman, director of Afterlife and son of the original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, will produce the series along with writer Gil Kenan.

Extreme Ghostbusters sets itself apart by embracing a darker tone and new characters, avoiding reliance on nostalgia. Extreme Ghostbusters tackled serious themes and featured diversity, but low ratings and bad scheduling hurt its longevity. Despite being forgotten, Extreme Ghostbusters showcased a potential direction for the franchise that was unique and successful.
The Ghostbusters franchise is still going, with the most recent entry being the movie Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. This is a continuation of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which was itself a sequel to the first two films. While there might be a respectable path to success with this nostalgic formula, the franchise completely ignored another potential direction that was showcased in an underrated cartoon.

It's official: "Ghostbusters" is now a $1 billion franchise. Just shy of 40 years after the classic horror/comedy originally arrived in theaters back in 1984, the films have hit a major milestone at the box office thanks to the latest entry, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Thanks to the new film's opening weekend haul, the series has now ascended the ranks to become one of the relatively few franchises in cinema history that can claim to have made ten figures or more in ticket sales.
Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" opened to $45 million over the weekend domestically, putting it on top of the charts in its debut. The Sony Pictures release also pulled in $16 million internationally, giving the film a $61 million start to its theatrical run. Looking at the bigger picture, that was enough to push the franchise past the $1 billion mark. The films have collectively grossed $1.005 billion through the years across four decades and five films.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife revives the original timeline with a new story, setting up sequels, including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
The first Ghostbusters movie kicked off a cultural phenomenon in 1984, and the franchise is alive and well 40 years later. Ghostbusters is a multi-billion dollar multimedia franchise created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and it includes five movies and two animated television shows, all of which can be viewed in two different orders — by release date or chronologically. However, not all films and series must be watched to understand what happens in the other movies and shows. Although several important events from certain films and series are referenced in other projects, some can stand alone.

The Real Ghostbusters had only concluded six years before its direct sequel premiered in 1997. And, as with many things geared toward children at the time, there was this trend of overselling the product to bring in both eyes and money. Hence the title of Extreme Ghostbusters (hereinafter referred to as Xgb). The revival never quite lived up to the marketing hype, however, this cartoon was also no lightweight. It proved to be a worthy successor that was neither afraid of no ghost nor afraid to push the envelope in ways its predecessor could not.
After a few blissful years of zero paranormal activity in Xgb, the supernatural has returned in full force to haunt New York City and the rest of America. So who you gonna call to handle this new flux of specters, ghouls and other uncanny creatures? Well, not the Ghostbusters. The original team understandably disbanded after fulfilling their mission.

The newest Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire posters play up the gags and reunion of Ghostbusters generations.
Released exclusively by Collider, the first poster pairs Phoebe and Trevor Spengler, their mother Callie, and teacher Gary Grooberson dressed in new Ghostbusters uniforms as they fire proton pack streams alongside the surviving Ghostbusters Peter Venkmen, Ray Stantz, and Winston Zedmore. Set against an icy New York City, the poster also features a backdrop of the New York Public Library's stone lion statue, a nod to the original Ghostbusters' opening scene. Other, more lighthearted posters include the returning ghost Slimer breaking through a sheet of ice, as well as a mini Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man accidentally getting its tongue stuck on an icicle.

After The Real Ghostbusters, a sequel series went into production. Extreme Ghostbusters introduced a new team before Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire While Ghostbusters found cinematic successors, Extreme Ghostbusters still lives on in other media.
As another team of paranormal proton packers suits up for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it raises the question of what happened to the "Extreme Ghostbusters." Before Phoebe Spengler assembled a new crew of supernatural successors to carry on the work of the original Ghostbusters and 2016’s reboot attempted to replace them, another group rose to the challenge of saving the world. As the Ghostbusters movies became stagnant, and it seemed as good as it got was Dan Aykroyd’s cameo in 1995’s Casper, a different kind of sequel rose to the occasion, and it was ready to get extreme.

This article contains light spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
We’ve got one! And by “one” I mean a female Ghostbuster that even jerks might like! Maybe!
The last time we got women as Ghostbusters, sexist buffoons making bad-faith arguments about the apparent sanctity of boy Ghostbusters drowned out all discussion of the 2016 reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, preventing both those who enjoyed the movie and those who disliked it for actual sane reasons from sharing their viewpoints.
That extreme response drove Sony to return to the franchise’s roots for its follow-up Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Although the movie took place in Oklahoma and took a decidedly dour, respectful tone, it focused on connections to the first team. It starred Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard as the daughter and grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). Together with their friends and their teacher Mr.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire brings back the original stars, including Annie Potts, who suits up as Janine to combat a new supernatural threat in New York City. Janine's transition from secretary to Ghostbuster is not unprecedented, as she has previously taken on this role in animated series. Fans will be delighted to see her in action in live-action. With a larger team than ever before, including familiar faces from Ghostbusters Afterlife, Frozen Empire offers a quick turn-around and could determine the future of the franchise.
The Ghostbusters franchise did not spend much time with the original stars of the 1984 hit comedy and its sequel when it returned in 2021 with Ghostbusters Afterlife. Now Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is putting the busting team of Venkman, Aykroyd and Zeddemore back into the heart of the story, and it seems that they have a new member suiting up to make them a foursome again.

Every original team member from the first Ghostbusters movie, including Janine, will be suiting up to combat a new threat in Frozen Empire. Janine's hands-on role as the fourth member of the team makes sense given her history as the Ghostbusters' secretary. The addition of Janine suiting up pays tribute to Harold Ramis' character and adds another layer of depth to the movie similar to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will see an original character from the first movie enter the field as a Ghostbuster, the actor revealing their thoughts on the change. The newest movie will see teams new and old trying to save New York City from the Death Chill, a new entity that could bring about another Ice Age. Because of how big the threat is, every team member from the original movie will be returning - including Janine Melnitz.

Not all of the Ghostbusters' greatest adversaries made it to the big screen, and thanks to their animated counterparts, they've confronted some of their most iconic villains. With the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire approaching and speculation swirling about the final product, fans can, for now, reflect on the source material and eagerly generate well-deserved hype.

In addition to various sequels and associated media, Ghostbusters inspired multiple Saturday Morning cartoons based on the classic movie. The "Ghostbusters" franchise may be small when compared to the likes of the "Star Wars" saga or the ongoing films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But because the original movie is one of the greatest films of all time, the name still resonates across generations, and the film series now spans decades.
Beginning back in 1984, the original "Ghostbusters" from director Ivan Reitman and writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd (who also star in the movie as the titular paranormal exterminators alongside Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson) follows a trio of scientists who have been trying to figure how to detect and capture ghosts. Banished by the school funding them, they head out into the private sector of New York City and become paranormal exterminators who suddenly find themselves dealing with an apocalyptic scenario in the middle of the Big Apple. After a so-so-sequel in 1989, the franchise came back to life...

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was essentially an extended episode of The Real Ghostbusters -- according to star Kumail Nanjiani.
On X, Nanjiani made his first comments post-actors' strike reacting to the recently released trailer for the upcoming Ghostbusters installment. Revealing that the original 1984 movie was the first favorite as a child, Nanjiani shared his love for the popular '80s animated series which influenced the latest story in the lives of the Spengler family. "I am a huge fan of The Real Ghostbusters (the animated series) and that show was a point of reference for this movie," Nanjiani said. "The filmmakers wanted to make a long episode of the animated series. So if you love that show as I do, be excited."

The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.
It was a little different from the film. For one thing, the title had to be tweaked due to a dispute with Filmation, who was making an animated version...

The confusing canon of the Ghostbusters Classification System has been scattered across multiple entries in the series. The Classification System helps to identify and document the various beings the Ghostbusters encounter. Identification helps to establish their role as scientists and serves as an invaluable tool.
In the world of Ghostbusters, New York's paranormal proton packers need to know what they're up against, and it all begins with classification. In both real-world scientific research and the fictional scenarios presented in the Ghostbusters series, one of the crucial skills for a researcher is the ability to describe and classify their observations. When it comes to the supernatural, there's a reason why when there's something strange in a neighborhood, people call the Ghostbusters. It's because they're more than just paranormal exterminators; they're scientists who can recognize and confront the supernatural while the world comes to grips with it.

While animated shows like Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and Netflix's Skull Island continue to expand the legacy of great horror movies, they're not the first nor weirdest of their kind. It's surprisingly common for horror movies to receive animated adaptations with younger audiences in mind. However, for better or worse, various horror-inspired cartoons were created for Saturday Morning and continue to be developed. Although some horror-inspired adaptations may have been odd, they served as an entry point for young enthusiasts and acted as a bridge connecting them with the larger horror fandom.
While horror is sometimes thought to be too frightening or questionable for children, it naturally appeals to all age groups. Some horror franchises, like Gremlins, successfully cater to younger audiences by adapting their source material to be more palatable. However, some cartoons based on horror movies are too bizarre to be believed.

A new “Ghostbusters” animated series is in development at Netflix, Variety has learned exclusively. The series hails from Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action feature “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” with Reitman also directing.
Exact plot details on the new animated series are currently being kept under wraps. No writer is attached at the time of this publishing. Production will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Should the project go to series, it would be the third animated “Ghostbusters” show in the franchise’s history. Previously, “The Real Ghostbusters” aired for 140 episodes, mostly on ABC and in syndication, from 1986-1991. It continued the adventures of the characters from the original film. Hello, readers! Right now, we’re dealing with a lot and I know for so many of you those concerns are compounded because you have little ones to keep safe and healthy (and even entertained) during this incredibly tense and scary time. Last week, I put together a list of light-hearted horror and sci-fi films that you can stream right now as you stay safely within the confines of your homes (you can read that list Here), and today, I’ve put together this massive streaming resource that I’ve cultivated with the younger genre fans out there in mind (especially if they’re not quite ready to make the leap to more “grown-up horror or sci-fi” just yet).
I tried to make sure to pull a sampling of shows and movies that would work for those of you who may have access to pay services like Netflix, Amazon Prime,...

New retro-style action figures based on The Real Ghostbusters are coming to Walmart this spring, and they're sure to excite any former '80s kid who has memories of playing with these guys as a child. Reminiscent of the original action figure line from Kenner, the new Real Ghostbusters figures come from Hasbro as a part of the company's Ghostbusters Kenner Classics line. The toys were revealed last weekend at New York Toy Fair 2020 and images of the figures have since made their way online.

Can you stream The Real Ghostbusters cartoon on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or anywhere else? The hit animated series is one of the most beloved of the 1980s and early 1990s, so it should be available just about anywhere. With Ghostbusters: Afterlife on the horizon, one would think that the studio would want the franchise in as many households as possible to get old and new fans excited about the long-awaited sequel. For some fans, The Real Ghostbusters took an even more interesting direction than Ghostbusters 2 did on the big screen.
Netflix had The Real Ghostbusters available to stream from 2017 to late 2019. It is unclear why the streaming giant took the series down, though it was more than likely over licensing expirations. This could mean that the Columbia Pictures Television and Dic Enterprises show could be moving to Amazon Prime or even Hulu. With Ghostbusters: Afterlife on the way, the...

A brief shot from the new Ghostbusters trailer ties into a threat that's been looming over the team since the first movie.
When it comes to Ghostbusters lore, if you were to ask about their biggest villains, the list would begin with the likes of Stay Puft/Gozer, Slimer, and Vigo the Carpathian. Then maybe some of the more memorable monsters from the cartoon or someone might bring up that incel guy from the reboot. But then there’s Ivo Shandor, a footnote of the franchise who has gradually transformed from a deep cut to being the puppet master of everything ecto.
The trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit recently and while it’s established as a sequel to the original two movies, they’re fairly light on the actual references so far. There’s a ghost trap, there’s old footage of the original team in the '80s,...

Unlike so many sports drinks and snack foods in the late-90s, Extreme Ghostbusters earned its extremity. The younger, decidedly hipper team never went after the troubled spirit of a BMX biker or unnecessarily wore sunglasses. Extreme Ghostbusters wasn’t completely blameless – the grunge-caked cover of the theme song does it no favors and the advertising […]...

For those of you who grew up loving it as much as I did, you’ll be pleased to know that The Real Ghostbusters animated series is now streaming on Netflix. The Real Ghostbusters began its run in 1986, two years after the release of the first film, and aired until 1991, with 140 episodes in total airing over the course of seven seasons. With five long years between films, this series was a godsend to rabid Ghostbusters fans and became an immediate hit.
Compared to other cartoons produced at that time, the look of The Real Ghostbusters had distinct anime touches and boasted a variety of awesomely creepy ghost designs and atmospheric painted backgrounds. The show also featured writing talent like J. Michael Straczynski, whose wildly imaginative and ambitious storylines made this series arguably better than Ghostbusters II, and, in some ways, indirectly affected elements of the sequel, as the appearance of...

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

Five years after the Ghostbusters saved New York from a ghost apocalypse, everyone thinks they’re frauds in “Ghostbusters II.” The new Honest Trailer takes a look at the 1989 sequel that actually already tarnished the franchise, according to Screen Junkies.
“Before you see the reboot that the Internet thinks will be an unfunny attempt to cash in on your nostalgia for the original ‘Ghostbusters,’ revisit the unfunny attempt at a sequel that kinda already took care of that,” says the voiceover.

The video pokes fun at the supernatural film by stating that the plot “is exactly the same as the first movie, but bad.” While it’s fun to see the original cast together again, it points out that this follow-up flick ruined the franchise by “doubling down on lame kid stuff” and taking all the fun grown-up comedy out of it.

Low on nightmare fuel? Fill up your tank by reliving your scariest memories from The Real Ghostbusters, a truly twisted 80s cartoon...
The Real Ghostbusters was a pretty messed-up cartoon sometimes. I think that’s one of life’s universal truths. I’m not quite sure why the world needed an unholy amalgam of anime, cheesy 80s synth music, and mind-bending eldritch horror with a chiselled version of Bill Murray on top. But it did, and it still feels so right to this day.

Ah, Dic Enterprises. What would my childhood have been without you? Well, for starters, I suppose I wouldn't have been terrified of the cartoon demons you dreamt up in your Real Ghostbusters cartoon, you sadistic monsters!
Ahem. Sorry, I didn’t mean to snap. It’s just… Rgb (as the hardcore fans...
