David Duchovny may not be gracing television screens every week like he did in his “X-Files” heyday, but he’s still putting in the work. His second directorial feature film, “Reverse the Curse” — which he also adapted from his novel “Bucky F*cking Dent” — was released in select theaters this past Friday, and his podcast “Fail Better” received headlines for interviews with Bette Midler and Sarah Silverman when it debuted in May. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Duchovny expressed his desire to keep moving at this stage in his career and not get hung up on what people think of him or his work.
“I was once talking to an agent,” Duchovny said. “She’s no longer my agent — and not because of the story — but I was not getting the roles that I wanted. I felt stuck. She was like, ‘Well, do you want me to tell you the truth?...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Chicago – The truth is out there for David Duchovny, and he is definitely a seeker. The actor, best known for the TV series “The X Files” and “Californication,” has a new film in theaters opening February 14th, in which he portrays a father figure to the title character in “Adam the First.”
Duchovny is James, who is raising Adam (Oakes Fegley). When the boy is old enough to understand, James tells him he’s not his biological father. As Adam gets to be a teenager, his education is mostly about survival, as James keeps him off the grid in trailer in the woods. When the past catches up with them, Adam has to make his escape, but not before learning that three men named Jacob could possibly be his real father. The young teen must strike out on his own to find his roots, encountering the possibilities along the journey.

Meg Ryan and David Duchovny swung by “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Friday to talk all things rom-coms — including their new one together, “What Happens Later.”
Kelly Clarkson was shocked to find herself needing to remind Duchovny of a movie he starred in over 20 years ago, because it happened to be one of her favorites of the genre: “What!”
“So I have to say, you’re both in rom-coms that are so massively popular that people love and adore,” Clarkson began before getting cut off by the actor.
“But I’m not, she is,” Duchovny said, pointing to Ryan.
“You are!” Ryan responded, assuringly.
“‘Return to Me’ is like, one of my favorite… what?” Clarkson said in visible disbelief.
“Ok!” Duchovny said, conceding that he had, in fact, starred in a romantic comedy.

Meg Ryan not only dazzles before the camera in “What Happens Later,” but behind it as well, as director and co-writer. Through the prism of one former couple’s relationship woes, this effervescent, enlightened romantic comedy explores our innate need for reconciliation within ourselves and with each other. It’s a delight to welcome Ryan back to the silver screen after an extended hiatus, and in the genre she helped rejuvenate alongside filmmakers like Rob Reiner and Nora Ephron (to whom this film is touchingly dedicated).
Adapting Steven Dietz’s play “Shooting Stars” with Dietz and Kirk Lynn, Ryan delivers her own assured spin on the formula, subverting it while highlighting the characters’ witty repartee and poignant sorrow. Perhaps she learned a thing or two from Reiner and Ephron through creative osmosis.

The 2000s were all about recovering from Y2K, wearing low-rise jeans and cargo pants, and listening to mixed CDs, though those eventually got loaded onto the new iPod. On television, reality TV got its beginning with the premiere of Survivor on May 31, 2000, and film franchises like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and Pirates of the Caribbean ruled the box office.
Movies in the 2000s also had some not-so-great trends, like torture horror (Hostel), raunchy frat boy comedies (Road Trip), and fat suits (The Nutty Professor), but the decade also came with some of the most beloved films of the last 30 years, including The Dark Knight (2008), Mean Girls (2004), and Iron Man (2008), which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With all the incredible films released between 2000 and 2009, there are bound to be some that audiences have missed, and now is the perfect time to catch up.

Garth Craven, the British-born sound and film editor and second-unit director whose credits included six Sam Peckinpah features, as well as Turner and Hooch, My Best Friend’s Wedding and Legally Blonde, has died. He was 84.
A resident of Malibu, Craven died May 20 after he suffered a medical emergency while flying back to Los Angeles from a safari in Namibia, his daughter, Willow Kalatchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Craven collaborated with the maverick director Peckinpah on Straw Dogs (1971), The Getaway (1972), Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974), The Killer Elite (1975) and Convoy (1978).

HBO and HBO Max will be home to new original films, highly anticipated streaming debuts of new releases, and the finales of three popular series throughout February. Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything new on HBO and HBO Max in February 2022, and it includes a new thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Zoe Kravitz called “Kimi.” The original feature takes place in a Covid-19 pandemic Seattle and follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers violent crimes have occurred in a data stream. The Max Original film premieres on Feb. 10.
Also coming in February is the “Raised by Wolves” Season 2 premiere on Feb. 3, with new episodes released weekly, as well as the season premiere of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on Feb. 20. And coming to a close in February are the original series “Euphoria,” “And Just Like That…” and “Peacemaker,” which all air finales this month.

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

This look at the ethics of transplantation, starring Grammer as a surgeon, doesn’t wind up as tough-minded as it first appears
There’s something about organ-transplant movies that encourages sentimentality and wishy-washy melodrama; looking back to movies such as Return to Me or Seven Pounds or My Sister’s Keeper. But this one promises a more hard-edged look at the ethics, the compromises and the difficult choices. “The heart is just a muscle,” grunts top surgeon Andre Boxer, played by Kelsey Grammer. Boxer is a gruff, cheerless workaholic who smokes like a chimney and often looks terrible. It’s a bravely unflattering and un-Frasier-like role, though somewhat improbably, Boxer is sleeping with a colleague played by Julia Stiles, a good 25 years his junior.
The crux of the story is an urgent debate over who should receive a heart that has unexpectedly become available. Alongside Grammer and Stiles on the transplant...

There is no doubt that Hollywood is the movie capital of the Western world. The streets and avenues may not be paved with dreams but there are stars, studios and stories essential to our movie history around every corner.
Capturing the American City on camera, even going so far as to include the city as a character in the films however pretentious that may sound, has long been a feature of urban cinema. You know how the Wham! holiday song goes, "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart"? Well, sleuths on the Internet are pretty convinced that we'll be getting actual organ donations in the buzzy Emma Thompson-penned holiday rom-com Last Christmas. In it, Emilia Clarke plays Kate, an aspiring London singer who at one point was sick and nearly died. She later meets the generous Tom, portrayed by Crazy Rich Asians' charming Henry Golding. Kate says, in the trailer, that he should get "saint" tattooed on his forehead. But what if he's a literal saint, dead when, well, he gave her his heart?
It's hard not to entertain this idea, no matter how wild it may sound. There are signs of the telltale heart twist. In the trailer, we don't really see Tom interacting with other characters; we only see him doling out his charm to Kate. Perhaps he's a figment...

In recent months, media accounts of sexual harassment scandals and eye-popping pay disparities have given way to stories about “tectonic” shifts in the film industry. The sheer volume and often contradictory nature of the coverage on the issue of women working in film have created the simultaneous feelings that everything has changed and nothing has changed.
An ad campaign for Rolex watches touts Kathryn Bigelow as one of the “masters of cinema,” yet she is the only woman to have ever won a director Oscar. A help line now exists for those who have been sexually harassed, yet the fate of many high-profile offenders remains undecided. Representatives of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — which has issued charges of gender discrimination against the big studios — continue to negotiate with executives, but there is no (public) word of a resolution.

Katell Quillévéré’s polished mosaic of interconnected lives is intelligently acted and visually arresting but its cardiac-transplant storyline is a little glib
Katell Quillévéré’s first two pictures, Love Like Poison and Suzanne, established her as a film-maker of delicacy and grace; this third feature is based on the novel by Maylis de Kerangal, adapted by the director with veteran screenwriter Gilles Taurand.
It is every bit as beautifully made and intelligently acted as you might expect, with some wonderful visual imagery at the very beginning. Yet I was disappointed. The organ donation storyline is a readymade trope, bringing together disparate life stories; it creates its own internal narrative economy of donor and recipient. But it’s a rather Hollywoodised high concept, reminiscent of Alejandro González Iñárittu’s 21 Grams or even, frankly, a slushy romantic weepie from 2000 starring Minnie Driver called Return to Me. Those films had the idea of infringing the donor anonymity rules,...

Now you can own Zootopia on Blu-ray thanks to Walt Disney Animation Studios!
Zootopia has broken records worldwide earning more than $900 million at the global box office to date. Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed the roster of voice talent tapped to help bring a voice, snort and a roar to the animal residents of the modern-day mammal metropolis of Zootopia, which opens in theaters March 4, 2016.
“We had so much fun casting this film,” said director Byron Howard. “‘Zootopia’ features such a large and diverse range of characters – one of our biggest casts ever for a Disney Animation film. We needed talented actors who could help bring these animals to life.”
Adds director Rich Moore, “Everyone in this incredible cast is bringing something special, something unexpected to their characters, which really takes our story to a whole new level.”

Joining Ginnifer Goodwin, who provides the voice of Zootopia’s first bunny officer Judy Hopps; Jason Bateman, who lends his voice to con-artist fox Nick Wilde; and Shakira, who voices international superstar Gazelle, are the following members of the “Zootopia” voice cast.

Disney's upcoming animated film Zootopia looks like it's going to a ridiculously funny and entertaining film. I got to see some footage from it at D23 this past summer, and I thought the stuff that the studio shared was great.
The voice cast for the film originally included Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Shakira. Now, thanks to USA Today, we have some information on the rest of the voice cast and the characters that they will be playing. We even have images and information for each of those characters. But first, here's the synopsis:
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. Bollywood has long eyed up Hollywood for inspiration: since the millennium, it’s remade everything from The Godfather (2008’s Sarkar Raj) tothe David Duchovny heart transplant saga Return to Me (2004’s Dil Ne Jise Apne Kahaa). Fox’s high-profile Brothers forms an interesting case study, reworking material that flopped the first time around: Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior, that 2011 mix of mythology and mixed martial arts that sought to provide rock ’em-sock ’em entertainment to crowds whose credit had been crunched. (Sadly, they couldn’t afford the ticket.) That film was very specifically tied to an America reeling from rounds of foreclosures and lay-offs; removed of that context, the story can’t pack the same punch.

Practice doesn't always make perfect! The pressure is always on when it comes time to sing the National Anthem in front of a massive crowd—say, at a Los Angeles Dodgers game—and it looks like Minnie Driver let it get to her. While singing "The Star Spangled Banner" Saturday night, the Return to Me actress flubbed the lyrics twice in the minute-long rendition. She started out strong, but as the song went on she botched the line, "O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming." If you listen closely, Driver chose a different word than "watched." Shortly thereafter, she turned "Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave," into "Oh, say can that...

Jason Bateman may be currently filming the long-awaited and highly-anticipated new season of Arrested Development (the brilliant first set photos from which we saw earlier this week), but we can’t forget that he’s got a number of brilliant films lined up alongside his return to the small screen, and one of them, Disconnect, has just been added to this year’s Tiff line-up.
Starring alongside Bateman will be an impressive cast, headed up by Alexander Skarsgård, Paula Patton, Hope Davis, Andrea Riseborough, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist, and younger stars Haley Ramm and Max Thieriot, and following this afternoon’s Tiff announcement, we’ve got our first look at two images from the film.

While an Oscar nomination tends to be the bright light in an actor's career, the recognition landed Minnie Driver in a dark place. During the height of her "Good Will Hunting" fame -- for which she earned a 1997 Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination -- Driver sank to new lows.
"I definitely went a bit bonkers in my early 20s, when I got famous quickly," Driver told the U.K.'s Stylist magazine (via Daily Mail). "Bonkers in a way where I didn't eat enough, I drank too much, smoked too many cigarettes, cried a lot and was very emotional."
Driver revealed that she dropped to 98 pounds at the height of her emotionally fragile state, before her sister urged her to seek help. Though Driver credits family for pulling her out of the darkness, she blames Hollywood for putting her there.

They light up the small screen, but have seen relatively little exposure in the movies. Here’s James’ of TV stars we’d love to see on the big screen…
Straddling the fine line between success and failure in Hollywood is like walking a tightrope of future career persecution and retrospective judgement.
Success on the TV screen is not always amply rewarded with a success on the big screen. There are a few ways to make the cut – reinvent your career through TV (Keifer Sutherland style), take the path less trodden with a series of slow-burning support roles (Jk Simmons) or have a huge hit on TV simply too large to ignore (Ricky Gervais).
Hollywood is a bit like an elitist private members club – once you’re in, you’re in, but cracking it has proven far too difficult for this list of talented actors in the past. We, the people,...

There are probably no two busier people right now in Hollywood than Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde--except for maybe Bryan Cranston--but we like 'em both so no complaints from us, though their choice of upcoming projects does give us pause. First off, Bateman will join Alexander Skarsgård, Frank Grillo, Andrea Riseborough (now confirmed since the last update), Colin Ford and Michael Nyqvist in "Disconnect," the new film from "Murderball" director Henry-Alex Rubin. Written by Andrew Stern, (”Return To Me”) the film will follow a wide variety of characters as they struggle with how technology has impacted their lives. Skarsgård will…...

The "True Blood" hunk hits the information superhighway as he joins the cast of "Disconnect," an indie drama about the many dangers of the Internet, according to Variety.
"Disconnect" sounds like a variation on "Crash" (the one that was nominated for a lot of Oscars, not the one that was actually good) as it follows a group of interconnected characters who are affected -- and in some cases destroyed -- by the Internet and other forms of modern communication.

Ah, the Internet. Scourge of tabloid newspapers, enemy of productivity and primary delivery system for gigabytes of naked people doing things to each other. It’s an endlessly fascinating subject for filmmakers and one that Murderball director Henry-Alex Rubin is turning to for his first feature since the documentary, hiring Michael Nyqvist, Alexander Skarsgard, Frank Grillo and Colin Ford to star in indie drama Disconnected. Written by Return to Me’s Andrew Stern, the film will follow a group of characters whose lives are variously impacted by the Magical Interwebs and other forms of communication so prevalent in today’s high-tech society. So probably not smoke signals, then.Skarsgard (yes, him again – he’s a busy bloke) is on as a former Marine whose marriage is crumbling due to financial and emotional pressures and who is driven to seek out an affair. Original Dragon Tattoo star Nyqvist’s tale is linked to his,...

[1] Henry-Alex Rubin wowed critics and audiences back in 2005 with Murderball, a documentary about wheelchair rugby which he co-directed with Dana Adam Shapiro. The film earned a Best Documentary nomination at the Oscars and won the audience award at Sundance. Since then, however, Rubin's been laying low. Aside from a T-Mobile commercial and some work on an ABC Family show called Schooled, Rubin hasn't done much in the way of directorial work in the last six years. Now, however, Rubin will be returning to the director's chair for his first narrative feature -- a drama called Disconnect. Read more after the jump. Disconnect follows "the linked stories of a group of contemporary characters searching for human connection in a wired world" -- like Crash by way of The Social Network, I guess? The script is by Andrew Stern, who has even fewer IMDb credits to his name than Rubin does...

Despite his first major directing work, Murderball, being a critical hit and earning a Best Documentary nomination at the Academy Awards, Henry-Alex Rubin hasn’t directed anything substantial since that film’s release, which was nearly six years ago. In fact, the only directing credit listed on his IMDb page after that film is an episode of something called Schooled, which he did in 2007.
But he’ll be returning to filmmaking, and also making his debut in narrative directing. Deadline tells us that he’ll be helming Disconnect, a drama written by Andrew Stern, who also seems to have a small history in the industry, as his only film credit is the story for Return to Me. It’s described as telling “the linked stories of a group of contemporary characters searching for human connection in a wired world,” which makes the title a pun. Or something of that nature.

Though they've worked together before on the romance Return to Me, Variety reports David Duchovny and Minnie Driver are set to reunite for the indie comedy Goats, an adaptation of Mark Jude Poirier's novel of the same name. Joining them will be Vera Farmiga, Keri Russell and Will Arnett in the story of a teen (Graham Phillips) who transfers to the East Coast prep school where his father made his mark as a student. Duchovny plays the makeshift father figure known as Goat Man who's life isn't anything to swoon over, while Farmiga will play the teen's mother. Meanwhile Arnett will play the mother's boyfriend and Driver her best friend. Ty Burrell was already cast as the teen's father and Russell will be playing his new wife. Minnie Driver Launching Music Career
Return to Me (2000) actress Minnie Driver is launching a music career - she's working on tracks for a new album and planning to play some low-key gigs in Los Angeles. But Driver says she's unlikely to sell as many records as Jennifer Lopez - because she hasn't got such a shapely rear. Driver explains, "I'm putting an album together right now. I'm just doing it really small. I'll start playing some gigs in and around LA... But I can't go and do the Jennifer Lopez thing because I don't have the bum for it really. No offence - no I don't want to go and be a big pop star... I just want to go and play live and do a record and do it quietly. You probably won't even know about it!"...

Question Mark Over Whether Mulder Will Stay With X-Files
Hit sci-fi show THE X-FILES will return for an eighth season - but David Duchovny is locked in last minute talks to decide whether he will be a part of it. Duchovny's co-star Gillian Anderson has signed on the dotted line to return with the programme, but the Return to Me (2000) actor is seeking more money and a less gruelling work schedule. His demands are also being complicated by a lawsuit he has filed against 20TH CENTURY FOX. The suit claims Duchovny was underpaid after the program syndication was undercut. Duchovny says, "I definitely could do another year, but I really don't know if it will happen. I've made my terms clear." Series creator Chris Carter says, "My contract connects me to the show for another season, I've agreed to do it either way with or without Duchovny." Sunday will see the airing of the finale for the seventh season - allegedly they have shot two episodes. Which one is shown will be based on Duchovny's decision to return. The first shows Mulder being lost in space, while the other keeps him safe on the ground.

Bonnie Hunt's $25 Million Home Video
Bonnie Hunt's latest film Return to Me (2000) was such a family affair - the end result is like a home video. The JERRY McGUIRE star, who co-wrote, directed and starred in the movie which also stars Minnie Driver and David Duchovny, gave bit-parts to several of her relations so that four 'Hunts' appear on the cast list. And Hunt, who shot the movie in her home town of Chicago, says the nepotism was so obvious - even her own family commented on it. She says, "My brother said, 'Isn't it nice. You have a $25 million home movie' and I think he kind of has a point." But Hunt says working with all her relations in her home town definitely had its advantages. She says, "I did it in my own neighbourhood in Chicago so I didn't want for anything... The police were like, 'what do you need Bonnie? You want us to block the street? We'll do anything.'"...

He explains, "I just couldn't stop eating on the set of this movie. "I got fat in Chicago, I ate everything in Chicago. Beef sandwiches, pizza and hot dogs, I went to a Cubs' game, went to Italian places, the only problem with the place is that you eat a lot... When he did we went to this bar and he asked me if my sister was dating anyone. It was my date from hell."
