Neil Young has announced four of his classic albums are receiving vinyl reissues. Freedom, Ragged Glory – Smell the Horse, Weld, and Arc will all be back in print on October 4th.

Notably, 1989’s Freedom includes “Rockin’ in the Free World,” which was played with Young’s permission while vice presidential nominee Tim Walz took the stage at DNC 2024 earlier this week. Ragged Glory was released the following year and has been expanded with four rare tracks for this reissue.

In 1991, Young put out Weld as a live album containing recordings of performances from his tour in support of Ragged Glory. Finally, Arc is a companion album to Weld featuring feedback, improvisation, guitar solos, and vocal fragments recorded during live shows.

These albums were first remastered for vinyl when they were collected together for Young’s Official Release Series Volume 5 box set (available for purchase here) last summer.

Qatar’s Doha Film Institute (Dfi) kicks off the 10th edition of its Qumra project and talent incubator event meeting this Friday.

Running from March 1 to 6 in downtown Doha and the lofty surroundings of the city’s I. M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art, the event will welcome the filmmakers and producers of 40 projects across all formats for six days of masterclasses, workshops and one-on-one mentoring sessions.

The Australian actress and producer joins the Qumra Masters programme, through which she will take part in a conversation about her career for the audience of 200 Qumra attendees.

Bouli Lanners, the Belgian actor-director of “The Giants” and “Eldorado,” is teaming with “Peaky Blinders” helmer Tim Mielants to direct “Wise Blood,” an English-language film that will star “Game of Thrones” actor Michelle Fairley and Julian Glover.

“Wise Blood” is a Belgian-Scottish-French co-production between Versus Production, Barry Crerar, and Playtime, which will handle international sales on the film. The project was first reported in Le Film Français.

On top of writing and co-directing “Wise Blood,” Lanners will star as Phil, a robust middle-aged man living in a Presbyterian community on the Isle of Lewis, in northern Scotland. One night, Phil suffers a stroke, causing him to lose his memory. Millie, a fellow Presbyterian who takes care of him, tells him falsely that they were secretly in love before his accident. As the pair “rekindle” their love affair, Millie fears Phil will one day recover his memory and discover her lie.

The 30th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff) announced this year’s juried award winners at a luncheon at the Riviera Palm Springs on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Japanese flick “Shoplifters” took the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Best Foreign Language Film of the Year prize, when the jury award winners were announced at a luncheon at the Riviera Palm Springs on Saturday.

Among the other honorees were Marcello Fonte (“Dogman”) and Joanna Kulig (“Cold War”), who both won Fipresci Prize for Best Actor and Actress in a Foreign Language Film, respectively; “Sofia” (France/Qatar), which received the New Voices New Visions Award; “Ghost Fleet” (USA) which won the John Schlesinger Award; “Carmen & Lola” (Spain) which took the CV Cine Award; “Dead Pigs” (China) which earned the Ricky Jay Magic of Cinema Award; and “Eldorado” (Switzerland) the winner of the GoE Bridging The Borders Award. The Youth Jury Award went to “What Will People Say” (Norway/Germany/Sweden).

The Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced its juried award-winners, with the Fipresci prizes going to “Shoplifters,” “Italy,” and “Cold War.” The three films — all of which premiered at Cannes and won major prizes there — have proven a mainstay of awards season, especially Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme d’Or winner. It and “Cold War” both made the Academy Awards shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film, while “Dogman” was left out.

Once upon a time, the quintessential foreign-language film submission was a sweeping epic or something to do with WWII. No longer. More challenging and topical pictures have been entered and ultimately rewarded. Think of last year’s Chilean winner, “A Fantastic Woman,” centered on a transgender character.

Among this year’s submissions from 87 countries are at least a baker’s dozen that address the current zeitgeist. There are films about refugees and immigrants, sexuality and gender, single fatherhood, the plight of the urban poor, protecting the environment, anti-Semitism, female sex workers, sexual harassment and civilians caught in current wars.

As the rights of transgender individuals become a politically fraught issue in the U.S., Belgium’s “Girl,” directed by Lukas Dhont, offers a sympathetic,

naturalistically drawn portrait of a still-transitioning 15-year-old who is working toward her dream of becoming a professional ballerina.

Notable titles up for the gold include “Rbg,” “Three Identical Strangers,” “Free Solo” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” — which have performed strongly at the box office. Fred Rogers documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” has grossed $22.6 million domestically.

Nine of the 10 titles named as finalists for the International Documentary Association’s top feature are on the list, including “Crime + Punishment,” “Dark Money,” “Free Solo,” “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” “Minding the Gap,” “Of Fathers and Sons,” “The Silence of Others,” “United Skates” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.
