When people regale each other with why Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of the most dynamic titans of acting in the past 35 years, his comedic prowess isn't usually brought up. We tend to think of him more for his bellowing fury and repressed sorrow, his endearing shlubbiness and elusive sense of decorum. He was one of the few actors who could conceivably be in almost any kind of film or role, ranging from the brash comic relief in Twister to the paragon of compromised principle in his Oscar-winning title performance as Truman Capote in Capote. He may have had a clear preference for high drama, but he consistently peppered his career with broadly comedic roles in films like Flawless and Charlie Wilson's War, but his greatest comedic turn was in Along Came Polly, stealing the whole film from the likes of Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston.

Featuring famed directors such as Argentina’s Ariel Rotter and Spain’s Benito Zambrano, who have not only played but won at Berlin and San Sebastian respectively, Malaga’s 19-pic out of competition strand is a testament to the buyer-driven pulling power of Malaga , thanks to its significant market.
Multiple other name auteurs pack out the selection, which also includes a far stronger line is broad audience comedies than most festivals would risk.
This is certainly territory for discoveries and breakouts – a healthy Málaga tradition.
A brief drill down on titles:

“La Bandera,” produced by Álamo Producciones Audiovisuales and Idesia Films, humorously unfolds a family’s inheritance dispute, in the sense that sons, Aitor Luna and Miquel Fernández, aren’t getting what they expected from their father played by Spanish veteran actor Imanol Arias.

The Fall trilogy aims to expand on the original and deliver a hair-raising, pulse-pounding experience to global audiences.
Last year’s well-received survival thriller, Fall, becomes the latest franchise as not one, but two sequels have now been given the greenlight. Released in August last year, the first Fall follows two friends who decide to climb a 2,000-foot-tall tower in the middle of nowhere...and suddenly find themselves stranded at the top. According to THR, the sequels will “will bring back original characters from the first film, while also leaving room for new ones to be introduced.”

Barcelona-based indie studio Filmax has nabbed international sales rights to Joaquín Mazón’s “The Night My Dad Saved Christmas,” starring Spain’s king of comedy Santiago Segura (”Father There Is Only One”) and Ernesto Sevilla (“I Can Quit Whenever I Want”).
A Spain-Mexico co-production, the film teams Spain’s tax incentive structure La Navidad en Sus Manos Aie with three of Spain’s most successful film production companies: Nadie Es Perfecto, Esto También Pasará Producciones and Bowfinger International Pictures.
The family comedy, scripted by Francisco Arnal and Daniel Monedero, is set in the days leading up to Christmas, when Santa – played by Segura – has an accident on his sleigh, right in the middle of Madrid, and ends up in hospital, where he will have to stay until after Christmas.
Fortunately, Salva, the guy he’s sharing a room with at the hospital, is willing to step in and take on his all important Christmas work.

Luc Besson’s Dogman had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday night, scoring a nearly six-minute standing ovation from the crowd inside the Palazzo del Cinema.
Caleb Landry Jones stars in the Bessonian action thriller, which already has gotten a rave review from Deadline. He was in attendance along with co-star Jojo T. Gibbs.
The film marked Besson’s comeback movie of sorts, coming after a past few years that included the disappointment of his 2017 tentpole Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the demise of his French studio EuropaCorp and a long-running legal entanglement relating to a rape allegation, of which he was recently cleared.

Once upon a time, in a world not so far away, if you wanted to make a phone call, you would have to find a claustrophobic box that housed the invention of Antonio Meucci, Elisha Gray and the one who actually owns the patent on the invention: Alexander Graham Bell: We’re talking of course about the Telephone. For many of you the idea that you couldn’t just reach into your pocket and grab your own personal device that allows you to communicate with anyone and everyone on this big blue planet is unfathomable, yet as recently as just twenty years ago, the sight of someone walking on a street talking to themselves was actually quite the peculiar spectacle. It is with that bit of knowledge that an idea thought up in the 60’s was given a modern day twist to focus on the last remaining telephone kiosk...

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and filmmakers and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we pay our respects to Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22, 2020. A costume designer-turned-director, Schumacher made a name for himself with St. Elmo’s Fire and The Lost Boys in the mid-to-late 1980s. As demonstrated in those hit films, the filmmaker had an unparalleled eye for young talent. We examine four of lesser-remembered pictures: Cousins, Dying Young, Flawless, and Veronica Guerin.
There’s plenty of tangents here, as Schumacher was quite an outspoken sort. There are many interviews to reference and admire. We discuss his championing of young star Julia Roberts during her tumultuous rise to fame, the deep love he reveals for his characters (as evidenced in Cousins especially), the passionate failure of Flawless,...

Renowned director Joel Schumacher passed away on Monday at the age of eighty, after a long battle against cancer. Schumacher, who has been behind many successful movies and franchises, was honored on social media by many of his collaborators. Jim Carrey, who played the villainous Riddler in Schumacher's Batman Forever and later reunited for The Number 23, took to Twitter to pay tribute to his late friend.
"Joel Schumacher has passed away. He saw deeper things in me than most and he lived a wonderfully creative and heroic life. I am grateful to have had him as a friend."
Batman Forever was the 1995 follow up to Tim Burton's iconic reimagining of the Dark Knight. Micheal Keaton was replaced in the role of Batman by Val Kilmer. After Robin Williams turned down the role of The Riddler, Jim Carrey came on board to breathe life into the character of the puzzles-loving supervillain,...

I’ll never forget the one time I got to talk to Joel Schumacher, the fluky, baroquely skilled, stylishly protean Hollywood filmmaker who died Monday at 80. It was June 1985, and I was one of the journalists attending the New York press junket for “St. Elmo’s Fire,” the post-teenage soap opera that already felt like a reunion of “The Breakfast Club.” The junket was buzzier than anyone had anticipated, because it coincided with the arrival of the latest issue of New York magazine, with its famous cover headline that christened the film’s stars “the Brat Pack.”
At the time, I was still in the demo for “St. Elmo’s Fire,” and had a real soft spot for it. In hindsight, it’s a quintessential Schumacher movie: a little smart, a little sappy, more than a little in love with its glamorously questing and angst-ridden twentysomething characters. In its glossy ’80s-youth-market way,...

Hollywood is mourning the loss of a genre breaking filmmaker. Joel Schumacher died peacefully at home this morning at the age of 80 after a year-long battle with cancer. He has left behind a number of Hollywood blockbusters and cult favorites, including The Lost Boys, St. Elmo's Fire, The Client, A Time to Kill, Flatliners, Falling Down, 8mm, and many more. He also helmed Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, which were huge at the box office upon their releases in 1995 and 1997, respectfully.
Joel Schumacher was also very honest about his work and his private life. He came out as gay and influenced many others to do the same. He spoke about how Hollywood treats its actors and vowed not to work that way. When asked about advice for young directors, he said, "Be bold, take risks, follow your own instincts, listen to other people only when you really believe in your gut that they're right.

Joel Schumacher, director of The Lost Boys, St Elmo's Fire, Falling Down and The Phantom Of The Opera, has died at the age of 80, according to his publicist. He had been living with cancer for a year.
The New York City-born costume designer who found his way into directing in 1974 with Virginia Hill was also known for his contributions to Dark Knight law with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, picking up the franchise after Tim Burton left it and approaching it in playful style. He worked with Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman on Flawless and with Susan Sarandon on John Grisham adaptation The Client. He made his final film, Tresspass, in 2011, but had more recently found his way back into television work.

Director Joel Schumacher has sadly passed away. The filmmaker directed tons of classic 80s and 90s movies like the Batman franchise entries, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, The Lost Boys, Flatliners, St. Elmo's Fire and DC Cab. The filmmaker was 80-years-old. Schumacher passed away after a year-long battle with cancer. He died in New York City.
Starting in the industry as a costume designer, Joel Schumacher began directing in 70s, getting a couple of TV movies under his belt. But it was in the 80s when he truly began to flourish, as he was behind the camera for several movies that have gone on to become true classics of the decade. The first of these was 1985's St. Elmo's Fire, which starred Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe. Schumacher followed that up with arguably his most beloved movie, 1987's vampire flick The Lost Boys. With a cast that includes Corey Feldman,...

Disney's new nature documentary Elephant has quite a bit of allure. There's beautiful footage of elephants (obviously), gorgeous landscape scenes, and, oh yes, Meghan Markle's narration. Now, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about one of Earth's most beautiful creatures, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also totally entranced by how soothing Markle's voice is.
The film - which Markle joined to help support Botswana-based conservation organization Elephants Without Borders - follows the annual journey of an elephant herd traveling across Africa's Kalahari Desert in search of water. It mostly focuses on three elephants: Gaia (the herd's matriarch), Shani (Gaia's sister), and Jomo (Shani's son). Markle's charm effortlessly shines through as she details the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of the expedition. A version of this story about Cicely Tyson first appeared in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy Magazine.
At 94 years old, Cicely Tyson finally has the ability to pick and choose any role she wants. “I’ve said this to a number of directors and writers recently, but I just would like to have fun,” Tyson said. “I want to do a role that’s funny, I want to do a foreign role. I just want to be an actress.”
That’s not a freedom Tyson has enjoyed throughout her career. That’s partially due to Hollywood’s historically limited offerings for African American actresses, but also because she came into the business with high standards for herself and an imposing sense of duty toward her community. At a press screening of her breakout film “Sounder” in 1972, Tyson recalled that a white man stood up after the...

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

After underwhelming critics and the box office with Tim Burton’s “Dumbo,” Disney has two more chances to impress audiences with live-action remakes this summer with the upcoming releases of Guy Ritchie’s “Aladdin” and Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” The latter is expected to be one of the biggest earners of the summer movie season. Not only did the first “Lion King” set a viewing record for Disney, but the footage the studio has shown so far has earned rave reviews.
If any criticism has been lobbied at “The Lion King” thus far, it’s that the movie’s trailers have made it appear the movie is a shot-for-shot remake of Disney’s 1994 animated classic. For the 2019 remake, Favreau relied on the same VFX technology he used on Oscar winner “The Jungle Book” to create photorealistic animals that are not necessarily live-action, but come pretty close to the real thing.

Before you add any other superlative to her name, Beyoncé is, first and foremost, a performer. She spent her childhood being trained not just to be a great singer but to become the type of athletic vocalist who could sing while in constant, rapid, muscle-and-bone defying movement on a stage for hours. She would get the chance to show that off early with Destiny’s Child, and by the time she launched her solo career, her live abilities were otherworldly.

Netflix has released Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, which presents an intimate look at her historic 2018 Coachella performance that paid homage to America’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Interspersed with candid footage and interviews detailing the preparation and powerful intent behind her vision, Homecoming gives a peek into the process and emotional physical sacrifices it took to conceptualize and execute a performance of that magnitude that became a cultural movement. This stand-alone Netflix original is now available globally on Netflix.
As the first black woman to headline Coachella, Homecoming recognizes the African American visionaries who inspired Beyoncé, including Hbcu alums Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, activist Marian Wright Edelman, and scholar W.E.B. Du Bois, in addition to cultural luminaries such as Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Audre Lorde. Beyoncé’s personal knowledge of the relevance and celebration of HBCUs started with her father, Mathew Knowles, an alumnus of Fisk University.

“Shrill” has received acclaim for an episode featuring a body-positive pool party, but one person is taking exception with it: author Virgie Tovar, who has accused the Hulu dramedy of lifting the scene from her book “Flawless” and a Tedx Talk she gave on the same subject. In response, Ijeoma Oluo — a friend of Sam Irby, who wrote the episode in question — has pointed out that the episode was filmed the same month that the book came out (August 2018) and any similarities are a coincidence stemming from the fact that such parties have been common for decades.
Tovar, who took her accusations to Instagram, wrote that she was “worried about speaking out both because I didn’t want to sully an important moment in fat representation for anyone (fat people have so little meaningful representation. I know how much this show means to people.) and in fear of being labeled...

German-Israeli film “The Cakemaker” won best picture at Israel’s Ophir Awards on Thursday evening, an accolade that automatically makes it the country’s submission to the foreign-language film category at the Oscars.
The film was written and directed by Ofir Raul Graizer, an Israeli who lives in Berlin. Released last year, “The Cakemaker” focuses on a young German baker named Thomas who falls in love with Oren, a married Israeli man visiting Berlin. After Oren dies in a car crash, Thomas travels to Jerusalem to find closure – and answers – concealing his identity and insinuating himself into the life of Oren’s widow, Anat, by working as a cake-maker in her cafe.
The film first premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival last year, where it won the Ecumenical Jury prize.

It's a collab made in pop culture heaven! Famed plastic surgeon Dr. Miami is the man behind some of the hottest bodies on reality TV — but he's not just a doctor, he's a rapper too! Dr. Miami (real name: Michael Salzhauer) just released his new track with Adam Barta, Reina, and Love & Hip Hop: New York star Mariahlynn called "Peep Me Tonight." In a statement provided to Ok Magazine, Dr. Miami revealed that he wanted to work with Adam again after their previous collaboration ended up with their successful hit "Flawless." He wanted to followup his debut single — which peaked at No. 24 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart — with another banger, so he decided to ask his pal and hip hop star Mariahlynn to do a spot on the track. "I met Mariahlynn from Lhhny and she mentioned that she was considering plastic surgery," Dr. Miami told Ok.
