Remarkable that there is no comments here about this band's video. Where, as Led Zepplin's "The Song Remains the Same" has many comments, and they of course do deserve it, it astounds me that "Queen" has not really ever received the recognition, here in the US, they deserve.
In these videos, a set of three, we are given an interesting insight into one of the most intelligent, talented, and misunderstood bands in the music industry.
Most people may know that some of Queen met in college, yet not one of them received any formal training as musicians. Brian May(guitarist) studying astronomy, met Roger Taylor(drummer) who was studying biology and formed the band Smile. Later they met a rather flamboyant character Farokh Bulsara (Freddie Mercury) who convinced them to change the name to "Queen". In the "The Magic Years" we learn how Brian May at first was against the name change. John Deacon was the last addition and he studied Electronics, and though the Bassist, he wrote some of the most successful hits, such as "You're My Best Friend" and "Another One Bites the Dust."
There is some interesting scenes of the band in concert, backstage, in recording session, and at some of their legendary parties.
Fortunetly Queen has received deserved recognition in other countries for their incredible musicianship. And this video set was filmed before the untimely death of Freddie. But there is a odd sort of,unspoken, prophetic quality to this three part video documentary.
Also this video is produced in a very high quality fashion as it is a documentary produced for the BBC, and therefore more then just entertainment but quite informative.
One short coming is that, though they cover quite well the remarkable showmanship, production, and world-wide popularity, of Queen, the documentary does not enlighten anyone about the incredible, remarkable, innovative musicianship and vocal abilities of the band. They, more less, take it for granted that anyone who watches this will know that.
Having the honor of seeing Queen live five different times, I can say that it is nice to own this video set as a helpful reminder of the greatness of music's most under-rated act.
