If you were alive and paying attention in the early 2000s, chances are you remember Tim Burton’s Big Fish. Or maybe you don’t. That’s kind of the problem. Here we are, over twenty years later, and Big Fish remains a cinematic anomaly—loved by those who saw it but often forgotten in broader conversations about Burton’s filmography. How did one of the director’s most ambitious, heartfelt, and visually stunning films fade into relative obscurity? And why does it deserve to be remembered as his second-best film, right behind Ed Wood? Let’s dive into this weird, wonderful, and sadly overlooked masterpiece to figure out just what the fuck happened to Big Fish.
Released in 2003, Big Fish hit theaters when Tim Burton’s career was at a crossroads. He was still riding high from his ‘90s dominance—where he cranked out Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, and...

Many actors have reflected on the big roles they lost, whether due to scheduling or different reasons. Kate Hudson is the latest one to jump with her own story for a film she would've been perfect for.
The Oscar-nominated actress has had a series of iconic roles, but proved she was one of the most beloved rom-com actresses thanks to roles in 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 2011's A Little Bit Like Heaven, Something Borrowed, and many others. Her impressive rom-com resume could've been even more impressive with one cult classic. In a new appearance on the Capital Breakfast radio show (via Entertainment Weekly), Hudson opened up about losing the lead character role in 2006's The Devil Wears Prada.

Alex Garland's latest feature film, Civil War, has captivated audiences nationwide on its way to setting numerous box office records for A24. Civil War became A24's highest-grossing Thursday night preview release and the company's highest-grossing opening weekend release. The movie also became A24's first film to finish a weekend at the top spot of the domestic box office list.
A civil war is any armed conflict between organized groups within the same state or country. Many in the United States are familiar with films about the American Civil War, such as Gone with the Wind, Glory, and Gettysburg. However, other civil wars such as the Irish Civil War and the Sengoku period in Japanese history have been brilliantly depicted in cinema through movies such as The Wind That Shakes the Barley and Ugetsu. Civil war films account for some of the greatest war movies ever made.

In their golden age, Miramax was a company that had no trouble getting their films to be met with major accolades. Films like Amelie, Chicago, and The Aviator were some of the best examples of the Miramax touch in action: auteur-driven dramas with huge casts and broad emotionality that garnered numerous award nominations and burrowed their way into the pop culture zeitgeist. In the midst of this high point was Cold Mountain, a romantic Civil War epic from Anthony Minghella that sought to recapture the rapture of his previous Miramax masterpiece, The English Patient. To a certain degree, it worked—the film got general critical acclaim, made $173 million, and snagged seven Oscar nominations, and yet it feels like a film that's been long forgotten. So what happened?...

Emily Deschanel is by far most famous for her starring role as forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan on the hit police procedural, Bones, which is how she amassed most of her impressive net worth. Deschanel played the beloved and unique Dr. Bones for 12 seasons. She also has several film credits to her name including Cold Mountain and Boogeyman, and Deschanel even had a cameo in Spider-Man 2. However, most fans will agree that Bones is by far Deschanel's best role, especially thanks to her chemistry with co-lead David Boreanaz.
Despite their on-screen spark, Deschanel and Boreanaz were never romantically involved behind the scenes. But Deschanel found love with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor and writer David Hornsby. The couple married in 2010 and together they have two sons, born in 2011 and 2015. Deschanel is also the older sister of New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, and their parents are cinematographer Caleb and actress Mary Jo Deschanel.

Star of late 90s and early 2000s classics like Jerry Maguire and Bridget Jones's Diary, Renée Zellweger has now revealed why she felt she had to quit acting for six years. The Katy, Texas-born actress paused her film career after making My Own Love Song in 2010 and came back in 2016 for the latest entry in the Jones-verse, Bridget Jones Baby. When asked about why she took a break after working consistently since the mid 90s, Zellweger said (via British Vogue):
"Because I needed to. I was sick of the sound of my own voice. When I was working, I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, listen to you. Are you sad again, Renée? Oh, is this your mad voice?’ It was a regurgitation of the same emotional experiences.”

Zellweger told Grant that from 2010 to 2016, she became unhappy with her southern twang, in an interview with British Vogue, and decided to pursue other interests.

In the early 2000s, Renée Zellweger was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. Her roles in Bridget Jones’s Diary, Chicago, and Cold Mountain (the latter of which won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress) made her a household name. However, by the end of the decade, she decided to step away from the world of acting for six years.
While speaking with Hugh Grant for British Vogue, Zellweger explained why she took her six-year hiatus. “Because I needed to. Renée Zellweger is reflecting on why she temporarily stepped away from acting 15 years ago.
The star told British Vogue that her acting hiatus from 2010, after filming the movie “My Own Love Song,” to 2016 was an effort to get “healthy” in all parts of her life. Zellweger would return to the screen with the third “Bridget Jones” film, “Bridget Jones’s Baby.” She later went on to win her second Oscar for “Judy” in 2020.

Renée Zellweger said in an interview with her longtime “Bridget Jones” co-star Hugh Grant for British Vogue that it was the sound of her voice that led her to stop acting for more than half a decade in the 2010s. At that point in her career, Zellweger was already a three-time Oscar nominee and a best supporting actress winner for “Cold Mountain.” She was one of the highest-paid female actors in Hollywood in the late 2000s, but none of that success could make Zellweger stand her own voice.
When asked by Grant why she took a six-year acting break from 2010 to 2016, Zellweger answered: “Because I needed to. I was sick of the sound of my own voice. When I was working, I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh, listen to you. Are you sad again, Renée? Oh, is this your mad voice?’ It was a regurgitation of the same emotional experiences.

Charlie Hunnam has certainly had an interesting route to stardom; although he would become widely recognized when he took on the role of Jax Teller in the critically acclaimed drama series Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam had been met with some disappointments early on in his career, despite his praised work in the Charles Dickens adaptation Nicholas Nickleby and his supporting role in the Civil War epic Cold Mountain. Hunnam had expressed a desire to work with filmmakers he respected and was very savvy in choosing roles that aligned with his career goals. Despite having a conversation with Zack Snyder that went “scene-by-scene, shot-by-shot, what 300 was going to be,” Hunnam chose to take on a supporting role in Alfonso Cuarón’s science fiction thriller Children of Men.

To all those who are guilty of pretending and lying to get a situation under control (basically all of us), Kelly Kapoor’s antics on The Office might feel a bit too relatable. Played by Mindy Kaling in the American adaptation of the show, one of the most jaw-dropping lies that Kelly took support of, was her pregnancy announcement to B.J. Novak’s character Ryan Howard.

Now, while audiences were reeling at Kelly’s audacity and how easily she lied through her teeth to manipulate Ryan, Mindy Kaling’s real-life anecdote might just leave fans shell-shocked. Yes, B.J. Novak opened up about her purposeless lies and pranks on set and admitted to being playfully bullied by the actress. It seems that Kaling somehow channeled her onscreen character through her real-life personality.

When thinking about why he wanted to star in a film like “The Order” during this time in history, Jude Law reflects that the idea of division through hatred is something that’s been around forever but also highlighted a story that he felt needed to be amplified. “It shone light on the early forming of hate groups and extremist groups in the States and by going back, telling a story that somehow has these uncomfortable relevances to today is a great way of talking and having a conversation starter,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He adds, “By concentrating on getting that authentic, it seemed to be effective as a piece that’s commenting on where we are now.”

Jude Law reflected on an impressive career of acclaimed films and performances. This is highlighted early on by The Talented Mr. Ripley, where he played the eccentric multimillionaire Dickie Greenleaf.
The Talented Mr. Ripley was a milestone in Jude Law's career, then already established by 1997's Gattaca and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. He appeared in a handful of other films at that point, but he saw his craft as a privilege while playing Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf. Law's performance earned him an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor; this confirmed he had lead actor potential, which led to a Best Actor nomination for Cold Mountain in 2003. In an interview with Collider, Law looked back at an impressive run, asserting The Talented Mr. Ripley is the one film he would love to revisit.

Jude Law has been killing a wide range of roles since he broke out in Anthony Minghella’s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” in 1999. Twenty-five years later, Law’s latest performance as grizzled FBI agent Terry Husk in hardboiled ’80s actioner “The Order” is a departure: The actor not only masters an American accent, but he’s embodying a gun-wielding Western masculine archetype: rugged, angry, laconic, righteous. Think Clint Eastwood, although Law told me that he channeled Gene Hackman and Paul Newman in our video interview (above).

Amidst all the hype surrounding his new Disney+ series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Jude Law is speaking out about how Hollywood is no longer making the mid-budget films he started doing early in his career.
Per Deadline, Law, a two-time Oscar nominee, told the Associated Press he was “lucky” that when he began his career the entertainment industry was focusing more on mid-budget films. Law said there’s currently a “gaping hole” in Hollywood that needs to be filled by mid-budget movies.

Actor Jude Law is raising concerns about a disturbing trend in modern filmmaking: eliminating mid-budget films that stress storytelling above spectacle. As he prepares for his new Disney+ Star Wars series, Law has openly criticized the current film industry, which promotes big-budget franchises and streaming entertainment.
In recent interviews with the Associated Press and British GQ, the two-time Oscar contender discussed the changing landscape of film production. He cited his earlier works, such as “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999) and “Cold Mountain” (2003), as examples of subtle storytelling, which he believes is becoming increasingly rare.
“Giving the correct budget and time and patience to stories like that is absolutely at the heart of filmmaking,” Law pointed out. “Right now, there’s a gaping hole in the type of films being made.”
Law’s condemnation is not directed at big-budget productions. Instead, he emphasizes the distinct worth of mid-range films, which enable richer...

John Seale, the Australian-born cinematographer who won an Oscar for “The English Patient” and has four other nominations for “Witness,” “Rain Man,” “Cold Mountain” and 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” was one of the highest-profile international guests at the ongoing International Film Festival of India.
In a Saturday masterclass, he examined multiple angles of cinematography and the wider film industry. Topics ranged from working with actors, his preference for being a lighting-cameraman, through to the use of multiple cameras and making sure that he approaches every film as a new and different challenge.
His descriptions of an early career in television, working on low-budgets and the breakout 1980s successes of Australian filmmakers were both a happy trip down memory lane and instructive for those people working outside the comfort zone of the Hollywood system.
“In the early 1960s, the Australian film industry was zilch. There was no feature film industry to speak of at all.

Jude Law is an accomplished actor with a BAFTA win along with two Academy Award nominations, but there's one movie he stars in that he's really not proud of. Two decades after its release, Law has opened up about the regrets he feels for starring in the 2004 movie Alfie.
Alfie, which was inspired by the stage play and previous film adaptation starring Michael Caine, featured Law in the lead role of Alfie Elkins Jr., a womanizer who attempts to give monogamy a try. Marisa Tomei, Omar Epps, Nia Long, Sienna Miller, and Jane Krakowski also starred. The romantic dramedy was a dud, earning $35 million against a budget of $60 million. Its critical reception was mixed, with the film holding a rotten score of 48% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. Looking back at the movie's lack of success 20 years later, Law admitted to GQ it was the wrong move to star in Alfie,...

When we think of John Krasinski, it’s relatively easy to picture him as the charming, slightly awkward Jim Halpert from The Office. But in real life, that is something he’s not quite. He’s married to Emily Blunt—the dream team couple that makes Hollywood feel just a bit warmer and wholesome. These two, who’ve been married for over a decade and share two daughters, Hazel, 10, and Violet, 8, still seem utterly smitten with each other.

Despite having a conversation with Zack Snyder that went scene-by-scene, shot-by-shot, what 300 was going to be, Hunnam chose to take on a supporting role in Alfonso Cuarns science fiction thriller Children of Men.

Despite his many memorable leading man performances over the years, Jude Law has at least one regret in his filmography.
The 2x Oscar nominee recently reflected on director Charles Shyer’s 2004 remake of Alfie as a “bad move” for his career following Academy Award-nominated performances in Cold Mountain (2003) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999).
“I was in a really strong position [at that time] because I’d just had another [Oscar] nomination on the back of Cold Mountain, and for Alfie to be the film I chose to do quite soon after that, I think was a bad move,” Law told British GQ.
After Michael Caine portrayed the titular playboy in the original 1966 film, followed by Alan Price in the 1975 sequel Alfie Darling, Law was left underwhelmed by an early screening of his own rendition.
“I just felt it hadn’t elevated [the material] and felt a little light, a little too cheesy,” he admitted. “I think...

In the late '90s and early 2000s, Jude Law was at the top of his game. Films like Gattaca and Existenz helped propel him into the limelight, and hed follow them up with The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. Those two movies earned him the only Academy Award nominations of his career thus far, and while most actors would choose their roles carefully after receiving such a prestigious honor, Law says he regrets the "cheesy" film he decided to do next: Alfie.
Released in 2004, Law starred in the romantic comedy as Alfie Elkins Jr., a womanizing limo driver who exploits his job to sleep with countless beauties, only to cause harm to those around him, such as his single-mom girlfriend (Marisa Tomei), and best friend (Omar Epps). Jude Law admitted in an interview with GQ Magazine UK that it was a “bad move” to sign on to star in 2004’s “Alfie” after earning his second Oscar nomination. Law earned raves for “Cold Mountain” and competed for best actor at the Academy Awards. Then came “Alfie,” a remake of the 1966 film starring Michael Caine. The movie flopped at the box office and was mostly panned by critics.
“I was in a really strong position [at that time] because I’d just had another [Oscar] nomination on the back of ‘Cold Mountain,'” Law said, “and for ‘Alfie’ to be the film I chose to do quite soon after that, I think was a bad move. Bridget Jones is back.
On Tuesday, Peacock released the first trailer for “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the fourth film in the long-running romantic comedy series and the first since “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016.
Things are different this time for Jones, and not just because this is the first film in the franchise that will bypass theaters entirely. As revealed in the “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” trailer, Jones’s husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), has died, leaving Jones a widowed mother of two young children. Things move apace from there, with several of her friends – including former flame Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) – suggesting Jones get back out there to reconnect with other potential mates, including a young man played by Leo Woodall (“The White Lotus”) and a more age-appropriate match in the form of a science teacher played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Fantastic Beasts cast reunited for The Secrets of Dumbledore, bringing the story of magizoologist Newt Scamander more in line with the story of Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. The franchise seemed headed toward the legendary battle between the great wizards, which people spoke about in awe decades later. The Fantastic Beasts franchise is set in the 1920s and tells the story of Newt and his friends as they encounter great danger during an era where Grindelwald attempted a widespread attack on the Muggle world.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore picks up after the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Leta Lestrange is dead, sacrificing herself to save the Scamander brothers, and Queenie changes her allegiance to work alongside Grindelwald. Charlie Hunnam, one of the most popular leading men on the big and small screens, has enjoyed a career that spans multiple decades and genres. A man who's best known for playing hypermasculine heroes, Hunnam has had quite a diverse career. After rising to fame on the groundbreaking queer British TV show Queer as Folk (recently rebooted). Hunnam jumped to America soon after that for little-watched Whatever Happened to Harold Smith? and short-lived Dawson's Creek spinoff Young Americans, but it's megahit Sons of Anarchy that most people know Hunnam for.
Comfortable both as lead and as a scene-stealing character actor, Charlie Hunnam has played memorable parts in major films like Cold Mountain and Alfonso Cuarn cult classic Children of Men in addition to his famous roles as lead in Sons of Anarchy, The Gentlemen and Pacific Rim. The Hunnam filmography encompasses everything...

This article mentions sensitive topics such as death and suicide.
Sometimes, it's a mistake to delete a movie scene. The scene could add context to another later scene or add to character development. But other times, it's actually a good thing that a scene is deleted. It may not vibe with the movie as a whole, or, in some cases, it's just too upsetting for audiences and can completely change their enjoyment of the film.
And occasionally, an entire ending for a film has to be reworked when it turns out it's just too saddening. Audiences rarely go to films to get upset, after all; they want to feel uplifted. So it is, on the whole, a good thing these scenes didn't appear in their finished movies.

Netflix has added Judy, a 2019 biopic starring Rene Zellweger, and any fan of classic Hollywood should definitely move it to their watch list. Rene Zellweger got her start in the 1990s with supporting roles in projects like Dazed and Confused and Empire Records. Just a few years later, Zellweger starred in some of her most notable movies, including starring roles in Jerry Maguire and Nurse Betty. However, it was Bridget Jones's Diary that elevated her to the level of fame that she has been enjoying ever since.
Over the course of Rene Zellweger's acclaimed career, the actor has played various types of characters. In Bridget Jones's Diary, she is an awkward and creative woman hopelessly in love with her boss. In the movie musical Chicago she plays Roxie Hart, a far more sinister and conniving woman. In Judy, Zellweger plays a much different kind of character. The actress takes on a role that is dynamic,...

The extraordinary career of Rene Zellweger has been filled with underrated performances that quietly made her one of Hollywoods most enduring stars. While viewers will readily associate Zellweger with her acclaimed role in Cold Mountain or her bombastic performance in Chicago, shes had plenty more movies that havent fully gotten their due, whether from critics, audiences, or at the box office. With two Oscar wins under her belt, its no surprise that Zellweger has consistently given highly committed performances, even in movies that havent gained the same cultural relevance as something like Bridget Jones.
The best Rene Zellweger movies showed off her immense talent for portraying emotionally complex and nuanced characters. With the incredible ability to seamlessly blend comedy and drama, Zellweger has become a household name yet still has many underrated movies in her vast and varied back catalog. As a performer always willing to take risks and put herself out there,...
