Military fiction might not be the most common anime genre, but it is a prevalent one. Some of these are just as outlandish as other anime works, while others are far more grounded. Using tactics and wartime aspects, these anime recreate the most brutal aspects of war, and some of its most neglected elements.
Many military anime are part of major subgenres such as mecha and even the popular isekai anime genre, while others are firmly in more realistic settings and explore concepts from a Japanese perspective. Best of all, most of these can easily be streamed and may even be part of continuing franchises.

Mobile Suit Gundam has been entertaining and enthralling fans of anime and plastic model enthusiasts for over forty-five years, but not all Gundam shows have had the same level of accessibility as its greatest hits. Thanks to GundamInfo's YouTube channel, though, curious newcomers and aficionados for the franchise can check out 1994's Mobile Fighter G Gundam and 1996's Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th Ms Team once more. While the release is currently announced as US-only, with viewers in Canada able to access as well, it's still a great opportunity to check out sixty excellent Gundam installments for free.
Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th Ms Team are considered among the best Gundam anime of all time. Each presents idiosyncratic twists to the usual spacefaring combat found in the rest of the metaseries. With each widely available to stream as of November 1, 2024, on YouTube, now's a...

Mecha anime franchises were once a dime a dozen, though the genre has certainly lost a lot of its former ubiquity. One recent anime that came out in 2021 from the legendary studio Sunrise was the mecha series was Amaim Warrior at the Borderline. Despite the caliber of the production house behind the show, it was far from a hit and actually attracted a fair bit of notoriety. Nevertheless, it's now primed to receive a follow-up anime.
Kyokkō no Sōki is a six-episode mecha series set in the world of Amaim that's set to premiere in Summer 2023. This revelation is likely shocking to some mecha fans, especially since its predecessor failed to make much of a splash. In the end, the reasoning behind the second chance may be the same thing that saved the Gundam franchise: model kits.

Legendary Pictures is teaming with Sunrise Inc. to produce the first live-action Gundam movie. And trust us, that's just communication.
It’s a Gundam! The screams of many a pilot were cut short while uttering those words in the vast Gundam universe and the cornucopia of alternate timelines it contains. Indeed, perhaps the most challenging bit about making an American, live-action Gundam movie will simply be picking which anime series to draw from. These are good problems to have. Just ask Legendary Pictures.
Hence why it broke last summer that Legendary Pictures obtained the rights to a live-action Gundam movie from Japan’s Sunrise Inc. The news came out of Los Angeles’ Anime Expo, where it was revealed Legendary Pictures, the production company with long ties to both Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., has partnered with Sunrise Inc. to adapt their longest lasting and most beloved intellectual property for the big screen.
