When Johanne, at 17, writes a memoir about her passion for teacher Johanna, the precocious result rattles three generations
Here is the third in a playful trilogy from Norwegian novelist and film-maker Dag Johan Haugerud. This one is a sly, garrulous, mischievous piece with something of Lukas Moodysson’s early film Show Me Love; it saunters lightly and entertainingly along, breaking all the screenplay-seminar rules against voiceovers (of which it has lengthy stretches but it never feels oppressive). I can imagine two different sorts of US English-language remake: one which ramps up the wry indie comedy, and another which transfers the emphasis to a dead-serious generational family drama. Neither would have this insouciant flavour.
The setting is Oslo and Ella Øverbye plays Johanne, a 17-year-old at high school who is dissatisfied with her life; she lives with single mum Kristin (Ane Dahl Torp) and is also close to her grandmother Karin...

Local Choir’s Version Of ‘Music’ Gets Tick Of Approval From Madonna, Sharing It With 19.8M Followers
Madonna has made a country choir’s dreams come true, sharing their video performing one of her hits with her 19.8 million followers on Instagram.
The choir from Northampton in the middle of the UK had sung their own version of Madonna’s 2000 hit Music and shared it on social media – where the BBC reports it was spotted by the pop superstar and re-posted it on her own Instagram Stories.
The Northants Sings Out choir had previously appeared on the UK’s Britain’s Got Talent, but the choirmaster Gareth Fuller told the BBC receiving this tick of approval from Madonna was “just unreal.”
Their version of Music was part of a montage which included the hymn All is Well and also Show Me Love by Robin S. So far, the BBC reports that 280,000 viewers have watched the clip on YouTube, but this number will no doubt rocket as a result of Madonna’s endorsement.

In my opinion, the two greatest directors to emerge from the nexus of international cinema in the 1990s were both Scandinavian. One of them, Lars von Trier, became quite famous, for reasons both good and bad. The other director I’m speaking of never got famous, and his movies, even during his brief heyday, didn’t become art-house sensations. Yet for a time, Sweden’s Lukas Moodysson burned with an intoxicating flame.
He made three films of astonishing organic craft and humanistic purity: “Show Me Love” (1998), a shockingly lyrical love story about two high-school girls who fall for each other in a small town that didn’t look very tolerantly upon them; “Together” (2000), an ensemble comedy set in a sharehome commune in Stockholm in 1975 that is one of the only films that totally gets the counterculture; and “Lilya 4-ever” (2002), a haunting tragedy about a wayward girl in the former Soviet...

From trans lives to celebrations of drag, queer film pulled no punches as it hit screens in the 90s with a DIY bravura that transformed the movie industry
Queer film exploded like a glitter cannon in the 1990s, sending sparkling product raining down in every direction. Trans lives hit the screen in Orlando and Boys Don’t Cry, alongside dynamic bulletins from the Black queer experience. We had jubilant celebrations of drag with Paris Is Burning and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, provocations from New Queer Cinema in the shape of Poison, Swoon and Edward II; there were auteurist masterpieces and timeless coming-out stories. The Wachowski sisters, Lisa Cholodenko, François Ozon and Bruce Labruce all made their debuts; Pedro Almodóvar and Gus Van Sant went stratospheric. Benefiting from a surge in the fortunes of independent cinema, and a defined focus for anger brought about by Aids activism, queer...

Sweden's Guldbagge Award, designed by Karl Axel Pehrson, looks like something out of a Cronenberg movie and we respect that. It doesn't look much like any other golden film award. It's chased in copper and enameled before the gold enters the picture. The Guidbagges were first handed out in 1964 when the late Ingmar Bergman, still Sweden's most famous auteur, took home Best Film and Best Director for The Silence. Other Swedish classics that have won the top prize include other Bergman masterpieces like Persona, Fanny & Alexander, and Cries and Whispers, arthouse auteur pics like You the Living and Border, Oscar darlings like The Emigrants, Pelle the Conquerer, and My Life as a Dog, and LGBTQ favourites like the teen lesbian drama Show Me Love and gay dance drama And Then We Danced.
This year's big winner was Oscar-nominated satire Triangle of Sadness which took home six prizes.

Beyoncé just made history when she took home the Grammy for best dance/electronic music album for "Renaissance," netting her 32nd Grammy - the most of any artist ever. From the start, Beyoncé's "Renaissance" era has been a celebration of house music, beginning with its lead single, "Break My Soul," which was released in June 2022.
"Break My Soul" features a sample of Robin S.'s house hit "Show Me Love." Before she was sampled on the song, Robin S. was a major hitmaker in the house-music world. Confrontational, provocative, outrageous, heartbreaking, hilarious – all can be applied to director Lukas Moodysson, who has been hailed internationally as one of Sweden’s greatest filmmaking talents, delighting and confounding audiences in equal measure. Drawing his inspiration from an eclectic and startling array of subjects, including commune living, teenage angst, punk rock, reality TV and graphic novels, Moodysson’s extraordinary filmography is keenly observed and deeply felt. Later this month, on the essential, alternative streaming service Arrow, you can see all of his films together for the first time (and the collection is released on a Limited Edition Blu-ray boxset on January 30th by Arrow Video). Here’s a look at each film and what to expect from this unique talent.

Since announcing her first solo album of new material in more than five years, Beyoncé has yet again taken over the cultural conversation. As always, the legendary musician didn’t disappoint. From the instant hit “Break My Soul” to her photo shoot for British Vogue and making physical copies available for pre-order on her website (sorry, they’re currently sold out), the release of Reniassance has been one of the more refreshing, and exciting, rollouts of the past year. Even an unexpected leak two days before the July 29 release date sparked controversy,...

Charli Xcx embraces transformation in the new music video for her Crash track, “Used to Know.”

Legacy artists need exit strategies. These days, with pandemic disruptions closing off lucrative live-performance opportunities, a lot of the biggest names in rock and pop history have taken headline-grabbing catalog buyouts of their sizable discographies for eight- to nine-figure sums. But departing the entertainment industry isn’t solely about cashing out; it’s also about leaving one’s fans on the best possible terms, ensuring that those who supported you all those years aren’t left unsatisfied. So over this past weekend, when Daddy Yankee formally announced his retirement from music,...

It’s kind of been a minute since we heard from Swedish writer/director Lukas Moodysson, at least in the world of film. Known for his often tender, heartfelt, and yet uncompromising works generally centered around children or coming of age tales, Moodysson made his name with films like “Show Me Love” and “Lilya 4-ever.” His last film, however, was 2013’s exuberant teen/punk coming of age film “We Are the Best!” and it’s been mostly silence since—even for his career as a novelist (his last book is 2012).

Avoiding the trappings of other melodramas about the short lives of terminally ill teens, Asia is a restrained and nuanced exploration of the relationship between a mother and daughter. Anchored by two knockout performances, Shira Haas (currently starring in Netflix’s Unorthodox) plays the 17-year-old Vika and Alena Yiv is Asia, her 35-year-old single mother who is a nurse working the night shift at a local hospital. Asia immigrated to Israel from Russia, taking her daughter away from an absentee father and, in doing so for reasons that become clear later in the picture, keeps her close to her side.
Asia spends her nights away from Vika working and later we discover picking up on where she may have left off as a young woman: going to bars and having sex with a regular acquaintance on his car on the top of a wooded hill. Vika also experiments with drinking down at a skatepark,...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Directed by Art Johnson and Keys’ brother Cole Cook, the visual was filmed at Los Angeles’ World on Wheels. The singer stars as a daydreaming rink worker, who skates and sings along to her upbeat tune alongside her friends. At the end of the clip, Keys is caught lost in her own thoughts as Whack brings her back to reality.

Miguel has released a new single, “Funeral,” a terse, electro-driven number about death and sex, which makes the first release from his upcoming Ep of the same name. The song, which clocks in at just over two minutes, sees Miguel singing over a bed of dramatic, surging synth beats.
“Send my regards to the mother and father,” he intones on the track, which was produced by Miguel, Deion Gill, Alekaei Savchenko and Arutiun Tamamian. “‘Cause somebody’s daughter I just fucking slayed/Blood on the carpet, it came from my heart/Once I start,...

Alicia Keys is a master of many genres. Proof of that recently came in the form of an unexpected Post Malone cover she performed at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. In the video, shown below, Keys sings her recently released "Show Me Love" before transitioning into the rapper's 2016 hit "Congratulations."

"I just want to vibe on this song right here," Keys said as she walked toward the piano. Following the fun interlude, she seamlessly went back to singing her own song like the pro she is. In her caption, Keys suggested she was down to collaborate with Malone, an idea we are certainly not opposed to.

Alicia Keys took over the stage at Barclays Center in New York City to perform her song “Show Me Love” as part of Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s Brooklyn special.

Alicia Keys and Miguel float through a rain-soaked room in the video for the former’s new song, “Show Me Love.” The clip also features actors Michael B. Jordan and Zoë Saldana, along with Saldana’s artist husband, Marco Perego Saldana.

Jordan struggles against a torrential downpour as he moves towards a woman, while Keys and Miguel find themselves on opposite sides of a room and “swim” to meet at a piano. After a six-year hiatus, Lukas Moodysson is back in the director’s chair with a 12-part TV series for HBO Europe. Any new work by Lukas Moodysson is going to be worth watching. His first television series, produced by HBO Europe, tackles many of the themes he has discussed in his seven narrative features, from 1998’s Fucking Åmål (aka Show Me Love) to his 2013 teen punk musical We Are the Best!, which played at the Venice Film Festival. The 12-part series Gösta is a comedy that mocks Swedish niceties, featuring stories about refugees, broken families, failed relationships and the desire to do good, with a particular focus on teen lives. Vilhelm Blomgren's character of Gösta is at the heart of each of the half-hour episodes. Gösta has just transferred to the small village of Småland, where he is starting his career as a psychiatrist. Gösta wants to be kind to.
New York-born singer Robin S. (real name Robin Stone) was only 30 years old when she shot to fame when her dance jam, "Show Me Love," hit the airwaves in 1993 and made the world move with its infectious groove. Robin S. also had success on Billboard's Dance Club Songs with the jams, "Luv for Luv" and "What I Do Best" ... also on her "Show Me Love" album on Big Beat and Atlantic records -- solidifying...

“Sometimes it’s necessary to not function,” says Robyn in the most functional, Scandinavian way possible: quiet and measured and with the soothing tone of some sort of woodland creature emerging after a long, restorative sleep from a cave of mystical wonders. In fact, it’s been four years since Robyn stopped touring for her beloved 2010 Body Talk trilogy, four long years in which her legend has lived on, out of step with her actual self. “When I was challenged before, I would go into this mode where I was...

Swedish pop star Robyn is making a comeback. The 39-year-old rose to fame in the late '90s with hit songs such as "Show Me Love" and "Do You Know (What It Takes)." Earlier this summer, Robyn released "Missing U," her first solo single in eight years. It is featured on her new album Honey, which is set for release in October. An unfinished version of its title track was featured on the final season of HBO's Girls in 2017. When asked in March where she's been all these years, Robyn told The New York Times, "Rebooting." In recent years, Robyn released collaborative EPs such as Trust Me and Do It Again. But she has yet...

Three schoolgirls are magically turned into boys in this ambiguous Swedish teen fantasy, which might remind you of Lukas Moodysson’s films
Teen-angst drama merges with trans identity parable in this pointed fantasy movie from suburban Sweden. It could remind you of Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In or Lukas Moodysson movies such as Show Me Love and We Are the Best!
Three teenage girls are getting bullied at school by misogynist, homophobes in their class, and their useless teacher stands by and lets it happen. They are Kim (Tuva Jagell), Bella (Wilma Holmén) and Momo (Louise Nyvall). Posters of David Bowie and Patti Smith in the bedroom hint at identity issues; the girls yearn for deliverance from the prison of gender. Then, in a coven-like defensive huddle, these three drink from the fermented juice of a strange fruit growing in a greenhouse in one of their gardens – and they turn into boys,...

After receiving some top notch remixes for their song “No Money” courtesy of Skrillex and Marshmello over the summer, Galantis are teasing some new material in the form of an upcoming collaboration with Australian producer Hook n Sling. The Swedish duo unveiled their latest creation during a performance over the weekend in Las Vegas, offering up the first taste of the new collaboration to the crowds at Life Is Beautiful.
The new song was debuted during a live stream from the Nevada based festival, meaning that the audio quality is somewhat wanting. However, the duo offer up a fairly lengthy preview that gives us a good idea of the direction they’ve taken.

Hardwell has unveiled a new remix over the weekend during the latest episode of his regular radio show Hardwell On Air, dropping a re-imagining of Steve Angello and Laidback Luke’s classic “Show Me Love” with Robin S.
Hardwell’s remix opens with the familiar organ melody and massive vocal hooks from the original version, but the Dutch producer crafts a high octane big room beat underneath to give the tune a more contemporary edge. The new rework opts for a restrained arrangement, allowing the percussion to gradually build up and repeat in a linear fashion. The original tune’s identity is maintained while the production is given a fresh revamp, making for a dancefloor ready update.
For long time fans, Hardwell’s new “Show Me Love” rework should come as no surprise, as a bootleg from 2009 served as the blueprint for what would go on to become a dance music classic.

On May 7th, Edm superstar Kaskade played to a packed crowd at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The sold out show saw about 20,000 people piling into the venue to hear the DJ and producer perform – and he didn’t disappoint. As a special treat to his fans, Kaskade has now uploaded a full recording of the show to Soundcloud, and it can be heard in the player above.
The live set opens with a brief introduction from the DJ himself, before a beautiful passage of ambient jazz fills the speakers. When we were at Coachella last weekend, we had the chance to catch up with Sam for an exclusive interview. Having just finished his set at the Sahara Tent, he was in a great mood and eager to chat about his experience playing the festival, what new music he has coming up, his experience working with Spinnin’ Records and more.
