Julia Stiles has opened up about feeling "slimy" while filming a 2000's rom-com movie. She blamed Harvey Weinstein for ruining her experience with his changes to its original screenplay.
As reported by Variety, Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein's Films To Be Buried With podcast, and she talked about performing a dance scene in the romantic comedy Down to You, where starred opposite Freddie Prinze Jr.Stiles praised the film's original script and Prinze as a "lovely, wonderful actor" but didn't have such kind words for Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax who ordered extensive post-production changes to the director's original cut of the film.

"[The script was] very good," Stiles remarked. "Then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend… and it just became dumb." She was referring to the early 2000s teen romantic comedy boom, which led to her own rise to fame as well as Prinze's.

Julia Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein’s “Films to Be Buried With” podcast and remembered feeling “slimy” when she was forced to perform a dance scene in the 2000 rom-com “Down to You” after Harvey Weinstein took control of the production. Stiles said Weinstein ruined the movie.
“Down to You” paired Stiles with Freddie Prinze Jr. in the story of two college students who fall for each other and have an up-and-down romance. The movie was made during the teen rom-com boom, when both actors became icons of the year prior thanks to the hits “She’s All That” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” Stiles called Prinze a “lovely, wonderful actor” and said the “Down to You” script was “very good. For nine seasons spread across the course of almost a decade, 24 has ruled the screens and fans’ hearts with some of the most epic plotlines ever, with Kiefer Sutherland at the center of it as the leading protagonist Jack Bauer. Throughout its run, it picked up a lot of other actors and characters too, and Freddie Prinze Jr. was yet another one of them.

Playing a character among the lead cast, Prinze Jr. was a part of the smash-hit saga for one whole season—except that it all didn’t really pan out all too well for him: He openly confessed to hating working with Sutherland all the while trash-talking about his experience on the series. In fact, he hated it so much that he even claimed Vince McMahon was a better partner than Sutherland!

The promenade dance, commonly referred to as a prom, is a dance party that high school students attend and which is typically held near or at the end of the school year. The event may be for either junior or senior year students individually or act as a combined event that includes both demographics. A Prom King and Queen may be revealed as well, and the event is noteworthy for many of those who attend. Girls may spend months looking for the perfect gown to wear at prom, which may end up being quite pricey as well. Providing a corsage for a prom date is another important aspect of prom, one which is meant to signify generosity and consideration and which should complement the colors of the dress for a unified look.

Matthew Lawrence recently said on the “Magical Rewind” podcast that the only time he got into trouble on a film or television set was when Gabrielle Union allegedly reported him. According to Lawrence, the incident occurred after he declined Union’s offer to rehearse their lines together on the set of their 1999 TV movie “H-e Double Hockey Sticks.” Lawrence starred in the film as a hockey player who becomes the target of a young devil, played by podcast co-host Will Friedle.
“There was this one moment where — and, again, I’m oblivious, I had no idea — and [Gabrielle] wanted to rehearse. And I was like, ‘No, I’m good,'” Lawrence remembered (via Entertainment Weekly). “And she got angry and went and reported me to the director and the studio. Matthew Lillard, who played Stuart ‘Stu’ Macher in the first 1996 Scream movie, is returning to the franchise for Spyglass/Paramount’s Scream 7.
How is that possible? We will see. Does Stu have a twin? Doesn’t look like it from Lillard’s Instagram post. Last we saw the horror-movie obsessed Stu, he was chasing Neve Campbell’s Sidney down 29 years ago, attempting to kill her. However, she had the upper hand, dropping a TV on his head. Also, you’ll remember that Billy and Stu began stabbing each other to make themselves look like the victims — just moments before Sidney kicked their ass.
Scream launched Lillard’s career out of a cannon with the actor continuing on to star in the Scooby-Doo live-action franchise, She’s All That, The Descendants and even a key role in the Blumhouse/Universal hit Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Teen romance movies are a hallmark of the genre, as first love and coming-of-age are universal themes that all audiences can relate to. Even as viewers age, many audiences continuously revisit these young adult rom-coms because they're reminiscent of a tumultuous yet nostalgic period of life. Seamlessly blending love, drama, and comedy, these projects were all elevated by their charismatic casts, but that doesn't mean up-and-coming actors couldn't step into the roles and make them their own. Seeing new performers help revive the modern rom-com would be an exceptional way for viewers to reconnect with these stories.
The best teen and young adult movies of all time come from a variety of decades, and while some have aged well, there's no question that there are dated aspects that don't hold up. This doesn't mean we should forget these movies forever. However, it does create an exciting opportunity to take certain...

James McTeigue made an explosive directorial debut with the critically acclaimed V for Vendetta in 2005, and has since added five more movies to his resume. His last cinematic project was Breaking In, a home invasion thriller starring Gabrielle Union, released in 2018. Despite receiving mixed reviews initially, the movie managed to cultivate a modest fan following, thanks largely to Union’s powerful performance. Breaking In has recently become a free streaming hit, ranking #4 on Freevee.
Breaking In centers around Shaun Russell (Union), a mother who travels with her two children to her late father Isaac’s secluded mansion, with high-tech security features. She must make the final arrangements to sell the estate.
But their trip takes a dangerous turn when four criminals break into the house looking for $4 million that Isaac put in a safe. They also take the children hostage and lock Shaun outside the house. The twist on the...

Now that Kieran Culkin received high praise and recognition for his role as Roman Roy in HBO's Succession, it's a reminder that he has many excellent roles in film and television dating back to the beginning of his career. Though Culkin was not an enormous star before he was cast in Succession, he did make his name with several high-profile works, as well as projects that have become cult classics in the years since their release. Though not always cast in the leading role, Culkin easily steals scenes and makes himself a memorable part of the cast.
His performance of Roman may lead audiences to believe that Culkin has always been type-cast as the neurotic wise guy, but he has been known to explore deeply sensitive themes, especially in his early work. Teen comedies have been part of cinema since the 1980s. John Hughes elevated the genre with The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science. There was also a crop of fun teen movies in the '90s like She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Clueless. Audiences undeniably love these films because they're relatable and show a glorified version of high school, one where all the problems can be solved by the prom. Of course, not all teen movies are so wholesome and cookie-cutter.
Some teen movies go for broke with raunchy humor and nudity. R-rated teen comedies, which seemed to be the most popular in the 2000s, are arguably even funnier for certain viewers because they're not limited when it comes to sex and profanity. The best R-rated teen comedies offer self-aware commentary on what it means to be a teenager—and hold little back in the process.

Chris Evans is one of the most charming actors of his generation. He can seemingly do it all, from cult action like Snowpiercer to starring as a scene-stealing supporting cast member in movies like Knives Out and The Gray Man. These films are excellent and have their own dedicated fan bases, but without a doubt, Evans is best known for starring as Captain America in nine MCU movies to date.

When "10 Things I Hate About You" was released in 1999, it featured a cast of swoon-worthy young stars. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who wasn't sold on the movie at first), Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Larisa Oleynik were the film's core four, but the supporting cast was rounded out by actors like Gabrielle Union, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, and Allison Janney, and everyone delivers a fun performance. The contemporary movie is actually an adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic play "The Taming of the Shrew," setting the romantic comedy at a modern high school instead of the olden days. It's about a pretty girl named Bianca (Oleynik) who isn't allowed to date until her uptight older sister Kat (Stiles) is taken; as a result, Cameron (Gordon-Levitt) pays the rambunctious Patrick (Ledger) to woo Kat. Hijinks ensue.

Hallmark is nothing if not reliant on safe, predictable storytelling, and this tendency extends to the people they hire to act in their made-for-tv films -- once you've proven that you can provide a stable, likable presence in a lead role, they'll keep on booking you.
But while Hallmark male stars need to personify whatever romantic fantasy Hallmark is selling -- whether that's sensitive, or caring, or supporting, or rugged, or good at fighting fires -- their actresses have an altogether different responsibility. Since a large portion of the Hallmark viewership is made up of women, these actresses need to be aspirational and, above all else, relatable. We need to be able to see ourselves in them, which isn't as easy a task as it sounds. So when they find a performer who can do it well,...

Hollywood is a curious place—just ask Kieran Culkin. The actor—who has been acting since he was a wee child—recently recounted a story about his first professional acting job, and it does not paint the director in the best light. Unless you think teasing and bullying a kid on set is a totally fine and chill thing to do.

New Year’s Eve felt a bit different in 1999. Not simply because it was a different time but because of the pesky “year 2000 problem” that’s more commonly referred to as Y2K. It created a widespread panic that entailed people prepping for an actual apocalypse. Except, once the clock struck midnight, nothing happened. The computers adjusted just fine, everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and the world moved on in a blink.

When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."

After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.
The best film of this brief renaissance by far was Peyton Reed's "Bring It On," which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2020. Bridgerton‘s fourth season is officially in production at Netflix, and as the new lead, Yerin Ha joins the mix as Benedict’s (Luke Thompson) Lady in Silver, Sophie, but what can fans anticipate from the latest romance at the center of Shondaland’s hit? TV Insider caught up with Ha at the Dune: Prophecy premiere in New York City on October 3o. Ha plays Young Kasha in the series, and we couldn’t help but ask the star about possible pop culture influences on Benedict and Sophie’s love story. After all, Season 3 of Bridgerton was heavily influenced by rom-coms such as Pretty in Pink and She’s All That. Focus Features/courtesy Everett Collection Ha admits there aren’t a lot of direct influences or inspirations surrounding Benedict and Sophie’s romance, outside of the Cinderella story format plucked from Julia Quinn’s book, An Offer From a Gentleman.

An enduring trope is seen in bad boy and good girl movies that highlights one of the most intriguing romantic pairings. For audiences, there's always been something alluring about the bad boy. He's dangerous and unpredictable, but he has a softer side that makes it all the more effective when the audience sees him fall in love. By contrast, good girls sometimes live lives that are too sheltered and secure but offer a sweet and innocent personality. Together, these boys and girls offer each other romance and purpose.
That's the setup for many good-girl-bad-boy pairings in movies and television and has resulted in some memorable examples of the trope. While this kind of pairing is most prevalent in teen projects, it can also be found in some of the best Disney couples, and even in some of the adult pairings on modern television. Who cares about the possible destruction of the space-time continuum if you can go back to the 2000s and stop a murder, right? The teens in Netflix’s time-traveling slasher film Time Cut face that question and opt to give the past a makeover, just like in She’s All That.

As Trap surpasses the $80 million mark at the global box office, M. Night Shyamalan is getting to work on his next title.

The best rom-coms on Netflix showcase classics and provide new, originally produced content. The streaming service proves its love of the genre with a healthy dose of first-rate romantic comedies in its massive digital library. Netflix doesn't just bring in the best rom-coms from theatrical releases, but it also loves to dip its toes into the genre with its original movies, and the results have been successful. In the same way the horror genre was on its last legs in the early '90s, romantic comedies have been a mostly untapped resource over the past few years.
With Netflix stepping up to the plate with original content like the adaptation of Jenny Han's To All the Boys I've Loved Before and the workplace rom-com Set It Up, romantic comedies are edging their way back into the spotlight. However, there are a lot of movies and TV shows on Netflix,...

Chris Evans is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now. He rose to fame for playing comic book superheroes, like the Human Torch in The Fantastic Four duology. But it was Evans' iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that turned him into a household name. But this super stardom didn't happen overnight.
In a 2009 interview with The Boston Globe, before his career really took off, Evans said, "Luckily, my first couple of movies were really terrible" and then goes on to name a few. What were the movies on his list? And are these movies really as bad as Chris Evans claims?

In 2001, Paul Walker was on his way to superstardom. He'd had back-to-back supporting roles in 1999 hits Varsity Blues and She's All That, and the first Fast and the Furious movie had just been released, with Walker and co-star Vin Diesel receiving the majority of the film's praise. But it wasn't the blockbuster franchise that we know and love today yet, so Walker was still starring in smaller projects, too. One such title put him back behind the wheel just a few months after the release of The Fast and the Furious, but it's a totally different kind of thrill ride.

You might as well call the 2000s the decade of the parodies. You had hilariously funny parodies such as the Scary movie series, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie and Tropic Thunder all come out during this time period. And we can't forget about one of the most memorable parodies of them all, Not Another Teen Movie. This film is currently streaming on Netflix, and we can't wait to rewatch it!

Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

When it comes to the golden age of horror films—hell, the golden age of films in general, I will die on the hill arguing that it is the late 1990s into the early 2000s. Sure, you might have incredibly valid reasons to argue against that, but this was a time of peak cinema when it comes to my personal media consumption. I consider it a source of pride that my strongest trivia category, were I to encounter it, would easily be Teen Movies of the late ‘90s into the early ‘00s. You see, I was at the perfect age for those movies to make an impact—a nerdy preteen with no siblings who was often glued to the TV. While everyone can easily recall gems like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Bring it On, and Mean Girls, there are an equally large amount of teen...

The American Pie franchise has had a lasting impact due to its cast, originality, and memorable moments, making it the quintessential teen comedy. The best way to watch all the American Pie movies is either by release date or chronological order, simplifying the decision-making process. American Pie and American Pie 2 are the most successful entries in terms of box office gross, while American Wedding had the lowest earnings and weakest group dynamic.
Whether in chronological order or by release date, all nine American Pie movies in the franchise are sure to give viewers a good laugh. While the teen comedy genre has faded, American Pie left a strong impression on audiences mainly because of its cast, originality, and ridiculously memorable moments. Even though other teen comedies, like Not Another Teen Movie, She's All That, and Get Over It, have their supporters, American Pie reigns supreme as the quintessential teen comedy franchise.

The Western is a genre that's mostly gone by the wayside in recent decades, as portraits of straight-shooting American heroes and uncomplicated "bad guys" have become less digestible to the public. While popular neo-Westerns (like "Justified" or the works of Taylor Sheridan) and perspective-changing genre breakdowns have made a splash in recent yers, the genre has mostly died out. Of the relics that remain, few are as prolific and familiar as "Bonanza," a Western series that ran for an impressive 14 seasons on NBC in the '60s and '70s.
As a long-running TV series, "Bonanza" was able to chart the change — or stubborn lack thereof — within the genre and the country, frankly addressing topics like racism and bigotry while also delivering regular laughs and a dash of melodrama to loyal viewers. The series starred Lorne Green as widower Ben Cartwright and Dan Blocker, Pernell Roberts, and Michael Landon as Ben's three sons.

Matthew Lillard has been voicing Shaggy in Scooby-Doo movies and TV series since the first live-action theatrical film in 2002. After replacing original voice actor Casey Kasem, Lillard has lent his voice to Shaggy in every Scooby-Doo animated TV series since 2010, except in the 2023 HBO spinoff Velma. Warner Bros. produced 25 direct-to-video animated Scooby-Doo movies from 2010-2023, all featuring Lillard as Shaggy.

When Cruel Intentions came out in 1999, it was riding a wave of teenage movies. Now turning 25 years old, Roger Kumble’s iconic teen drama was following in the footsteps of other hits of its time, such as Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, and She’s All That, adapting a markedly non-kid-oriented literary classic into a film aimed at audiences around the age of 16. The work that Kumble, who acts as the film’s director and screenwriter, picked was Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 game-changing novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, probably best known by moviegoers from the 1988 Stephen Frears picture Dangerous Liaisons, starring Glenn Close and John Malkovich.

There’s something uniquely cinematic about romantic comedies — something that makes them a natural fit for the movies and vice-versa. There’s an intoxicating alchemy that allows us to believe in the magic of meet-cutes, happily-ever-afters, and all the agonizing contrivances that tend to pop up between the two. Love it seems gives storytellers permission to transpose the stuff of operas and fables into the fabric of real (or at least overly glossed but still recognizable) life.
On paper, a film like “Pretty Woman” might be a retrograde fairy tale about a sex worker with a heart of gold and the rich businessman who can afford it, but the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere is so explosive that you surrender to the sentiment of it all. Literally nothing in Richard Curtis’ “Love Actually” makes sense if you stop and think about it for even a few seconds. The...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.
