As HBO prepares to cast a spell over audiences with its Harry Potter series, discourse about who should play iconic characters in the episodic presentation is alive and well. While some believe the series should remain faithful to the novels, others feel another version of J.K. Rowling’s story needs new magic. While speaking with Variety recently, Jason Isaacs, who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter film series, revealed who he wants to play the malevolent character for the upcoming series. Without hesitation, Isaacs said he wants legendary actress Meryl Streep to try Lucius Malfoy’s cape and cane on for size.
“Meryl Streep. She can do anything, that woman. There’s literally no limit to what she can do,” Isaacs told Variety.
Casting Meryl Streep as Lucius Malfoy, the father of Harry Potter villain Draco Malfoy in the books and films, could prove challenging. The casting involves a gender swap for the character,...

The star-studded cast of Guy Ritchie’s crime drama MobLand is adding another notable name.
Janet McTeer will be part of the Paramount+ series, which is set to premiere March 30. The Emmy and two-time Oscar nominee joins an ensemble led be Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren.
MobLand centers on a London-based Irish crime family headed by Brosnan’s Conrad Harrigan, that’s fighting for power within a global syndicate. Mirren plays his wife, Maeve — “the brains behind the charm,” as Brosnan’s character describes her in the series trailer — and Hardy plays Harry Da Souza, the family’s fixer.
McTeer (The Old Man, The Menu) will play a character named Kat, who is “as charming as she is violent,” according to the character’s description. “Crime bosses from London to Beijing are anxious never to cross swords with her.”

With HBO’s Harry Potter series set to hit production later this year, reports regarding the casting have been flooding in. Although HBO has been mostly tight-lipped about the castings given the massive standard that was set by its predecessor, as of now, John Lithgow is the lone star that has been confirmed to replace a major character from the movies.

HBO's Harry Potter TV series gears up to start shooting later this year. A huge cast reveal has to be somewhere on the horizon and, in the meantime, casting rumours for the cable network's take on author J.K. Rowling's beloved series of novels keep coming in thick and fast.
The 8-movie franchise grossed over $7.7 billion at the worldwide box office and there's plenty of interest in seeing a new approach to the books that expands on characters and moments there simply wasn't time for in a two-hour movie.
As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, scooper @MyTimeToShineH brings word today that, "Janet McTeer has been offered the role of Professor McGonagall in the upcoming Harry Potter series."
Deadline has also confirmed that McTeer is in talks and that Paapa Essiedu is pretty much a lock for Professor Severus Snape.

Exclusive: HBO is closing in on two more main cast members for its high-profile series adaptation of the hugely popular Harry Potter fantasy books. Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actress Janet McTeer is in negotiations to play Professor Minerva McGonagall, sources tell Deadline. Additionally, Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, one of the first actors identified for the series, is closing his deal to portray Professor Severus Snape, I hear. They are poised to join John Lithgow, who, as Deadline reported exclusively, will be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore.
HBO declined comment. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series is probably the most anticipated television event currently. And while the project has been pushed back, fans are eagerly waiting for news and even rumors, as everyone is interested to see what the series will look like and how different it will be from the movies.
We have been promised a very faithful adaptation of Rowling’s books, as well as a series that will run for a decade and add a lot of material that was omitted from the popular film series. Still, there’s very little official information, but we have a new rumor for you!
We know that John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore in the series, but aside from that, nothing has been confirmed yet. We’ve heard rumors about Snape, Quirrell, and even Voldemort, and now a new report claims that the producers have their eyes set on Maggie Smith...

There are many longstanding traditions in this entertainment industry of ours, and one of them — not necessarily the greatest, but certainly one of them — is the Sundance Road Trip Movie. Independent films about families and/or mismatched associates on a lengthy trek around the country or the world, in which a series of adventures and/or misadventures usually prove that the journey was just as important as the destination. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad, but always it screams “Sundance.”
Not every Sundance has a Sundance Road Trip Movie, but the festival just wouldn’t be the same without films like “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Paris, Texas,” “Y tu mamá también,” “Smoke Signals,” “Tumbleweeds,” “The Motorcycle Diaries,” “A Real Pain,” “The Puffy Chair,” “Wristcutters: A Love Story,” “The End of the Tour,” “Will & Harper” or “The Brave Little Toaster.” And now, joining that legacy is Cole Webley’s “Omaha,...

The cast of the Harry Potter series currently being developed by Warner Bros. and HBO just keeps getting bigger. Recently, Gangs of London actor Paapa Essiedu was reported to be in talks to play Severus Snape, taking over the role from the late Alan Rickman. Now, Feature First reports that Oscar-nominated actress Janet McTeer is also in talks for an important role, as Professor Minerva McGonagall, who plays an integral part in all seven books by author J.K. Rowling.

One of the most celebrated comedies of 1999 is “Notting Hill,” starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Roger Michell, the film tells of a famous movie actress named Anna Scott who falls in love with a small-town England bookstore owner named William Thacker. Released 25 years ago in May 1999, “Notting Hill” was a major box office success, grossing $364 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. Read on for more about the “Notting Hill” 25th anniversary.
The nation’s critics gave mostly positive reviews to “Notting Hill,” unusual for a studio romantic comedy. Derek Elley in Variety wrote, “[The film] has buckets to spare of that rarest screen commodity — genuine, engaging charm — plus a cast and production values that fully deliver.” Wesley Morris in San Francisco Examiner said, “Director Michell isn’t content to rest on his stars’ slapstick laurels, mining instead the more sophisticated if subversive socio-romantic pratfalls in Curtis’ script.

Garfield wasn't meant to star in his own comic - Jon Arbuckle was the original focus until side-character Garfield took over the spotlight. Garfield's design changed because of a newsprint shortage - newspapers shrank comics to get more on the page, so Davis made Garfield more expressive to compensate. Jim Davis' early comic Gnorm Gnat didn't catch on, leading to Garfield becoming his most successful creation.
Despite being the world's most syndicated comic, pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars every year, Garfield was originally meant to be very different, even following a different character in Jim Davis' original vision. The cynical, always hungry tabby has appeared on endless merchandise, starred in various movies and TV shows, and is instantly recognizable by fans across the world - however, he wasn't supposed to be the focus of his own comic.

Amazon MGM Studios have landed rights to Benjamin Percy’s novella “American Criminal,” with Gavin O’Connor negotiating to direct.
The film, which Hidden Pictures and NeoText will produce, follows a professional thief who, after being apprehended by an FBI agent, is coaxed into infiltrating a violent Midwestern gang with the goal of dismantling them from the inside. However, what the FBI agent doesn’t know is that the thief is also orchestrating the largest – and last – heist of his life.
O’Connor has directed a number of popular and critically acclaimed works, including “Warrior” with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck, “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, and “Tumbleweeds,” which featured an Oscar-nominated turn from Janet McTeer. He most recently retimed with Affleck on 2020’s “The Way Back,” the story of an alcoholic basketball coach.

Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red had mixed reviews upon release but has gained new popularity since being added to Hulu's catalog in 2023. The miniseries allowed upcoming actors like Nancy Travis, Kimberly J. Brown, and Melanie Lynskey to showcase their abilities. Matt Keeslar played the role of Steve Rimbauer in Rose Red and has since had notable roles in films like Scream 3 and series like Dune.
Stephen King's underappreciated miniseries Rose Red includes a number of dynamic characters and a talented cast to bring them to life. In 2002, ABC released a three-part miniseries with a story by King. The show follows Dr. Joyce Reardon, a paranormal psychology professor who brings a group of psychics to the Rose Red mansion in hopes of finding scientific data that proves the existence of the paranormal. Once there, the team faces the evil spirits tethered to the house due to previous deaths.

Last month, Searchlight Pictures unveiled two posters for their darkly comedic psychological thriller The Menu, which is set to reach theatres on November 18th. Janet McTeer is the sort of interview subject that when you get them on the phone they are more interested in talking to you than the preassigned subject. That’s not to say McTeer isn’t proud of her work on “Ozark,” but she had a reputation as an ego-less interview for decades. And in a pandemic where many stars have let their hair or guard down for one reason or another, she’s the same charming Janet McTeer who won over awards season nine years ago when on the campaign trail for “Albert Nobbs.”

The coronavirus postponement of Bond film “No Time to Die” is the box-office story of the moment, one that could augur future blockbuster shifts. At a minimum, it wreaks a measure of havoc on the release calendar: Other films stayed away from its original date, and now it will open during the highly competitive Thanksgiving holiday period. The risks to studio and theater revenues show how a virus could upend an industry.
However, this weekend also brings a near certainty: Box office should easily fall short of $140 million, pushing the year-to-date number below 2019 for the first time. Last year, “Captain Marvel” accounted for about 75 percent of the business for a weekend total of $211 million. That makes keeping the release schedule steady even more important for theaters.
Meanwhile, this weekend’s top releases are proceeding as we head into spring break and Easter over the next few weeks. Few brands are as prime as Pixar,...

Our Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds currently have Julia Garner out front to win for “Ozark,” but her co-star Janet McTeer, who joined the gritty Netflix drama in its second season, is back in 14th place. While McTeer appears to be a longshot with 100/1 odds, here are four reasons why you shouldn’t underestimate her:
1. “Ozark’s” five Emmy nominations last year
Netflix released the first season of “Ozark” in July 2017, so nearly an entire year before the 2018 Emmys. Keeping that, and the stacked drama field, in mind, its five nominations were an impressive feat, especially if you consider where it ended up hitting: Jason Bateman not only crashed the Best Drama Actor lineup, but also managed to sneak into Best Drama Directing (“The Toll”) alongside co-director Daniel Sackheim (“Tonight We Improvise”). It also got nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.

This story about Janet McTeer first appeared in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Janet McTeer never thought she’d play a Marvel Comics character — but when the opportunity arose to be in the second season of “Jessica Jones,” she found it was perfect for her.
“I thought, ‘I’m not quite sure how to do that comic book world,'” said the British stage and film actress, who received Oscar nominations for “Tumbleweeds” and “Albert Nobbs.” “It’s not really what I do, and I’m not sure how I’d do it or if I’d be any good at it. But when I watched it, I realized it was more like people with superpowers having super problems. It was very dark and twisted and real.”
Photographed by Steven Gerlich for TheWrap
McTeer said she soon understood what creator Melissa Rosenberg and the writers wanted from the character.

This article marks Part 12 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Awards, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 1977, while Meryl Streep was making her big screen debut with a small role in Fred Zinnemann‘s Oscar-winning “Julia,” young filmmaker Wes Craven was scaring the pants off moviegoers with his X-rated horror flick “The Hills Have Eyes.”
Seven years later, in 1984, Streep already had two Oscars under her belt, yet was putting fans to sleep with the tedious Robert De Niro romance “Falling in Love.” Meanwhile, Craven was at last breaking down the door into mainstream cinema, with his “A Nightmare on Elm Street” proving a sleeper hit and making burnt serial killer Freddy Krueger a household name.

Over the course of her career, Annette Bening has been nominated for four Oscars. That, of course, shouldn’t come as a surprise because this is one extremely talented lady. What might shock you, though, is that Bening has taken home zero of those coveted statuettes — but this could all change with her latest work: 20th Century Women.
Mike Mills (Beginners, Thumbsucker) returns with another work he both directed and wrote the screenplay for — and it has the distinction of holding its world premiere on October 8 at the 54th New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece film this year.
The movie is a comedy based in Santa Barbara in the late 1970s and is the story of three women — Bening as single Dorothea Fields, a single mother to teenaged son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann); Greta Gerwig as Abbie,...

Following the massive success of Game Of Thrones, it was inevitable that actress Emilia Clarke (best known for portraying Daenerys Targaryen in the series) would begin making her rounds in Hollywood in a variety of genres. Unfortunately, Terminator: Genisys didn't really turn out too well, and the film's sequels have been put on hold until further notice. Though in addition to booking within the genre of action films, Clarke has also turned to making more low-key, emotional flicks like Me Before You.

Everyone involved with "Jane Got a Gun" seems hellbent for leather in making the movie actually work out as another cast member has joined the getting less-troubled Western.
Gavin O'Connor is making his sudden last-minute directing gig less stressful by surrounding himself with people he's worked with before, such as new recruit Noah Emmerich, according to Deadline. "Jane Got a Gun" marks the fifth collaboration between Emmerich and O'Connor, following "Tumbleweeds," "Miracle," "Pride and Glory" and "Warrior."
Emmerich has been cast as the husband of Jane (Natalie Portman), an outlaw who comes home one day chock full of bullet holes. Gavin O'Connor has officially replaced Lynne Ramsay as director on the troubled Western Jane Got a Gun.
Ramsay was a no show on the first day of production scheduled for earlier this week. Her abrupt departure left the shoot in a frantic search for a new director. She apparently fled without notice after a week of clashing with producer Scott Steindorff. It is not known what the fight was over.
When it was clear that Lynne Ramsay was not returning to work, producers Steindorff, Aleen Keshishian, Terry Dougas and Natalie Portman, who also stars in the film, hurried to find a replacement, which led them to Warrior and Tumbleweeds director Gavin O'Connor, who most recently directed The Americans: Pilot for FX.
This is the second averted disaster for the project in as many months. In late February, Michael Fassbender bailed at the last minute, but was quickly replaced by Joel Edgerton.

Okay, so "Jane" is no longer a calamity. One day after gifted Scottish director Lynne Ramsay shockingly pulled out of Natalie Portman-starring Western "Jane Got a Gun" on the very first day of shooting, her replacement has already been drafted: Gavin O'Connor, the sturdy multi-hyphenate whose films include "Tumbleweeds," "Pride and Glory" and, most recently, "Warrior." With O'Connor on board, shooting will get under way tomorrow. No time to waste. It's a smart choice, in my opinion. O'Connor is a solid, sensible craftsman who began in the independent realm and has since brought that sensibility to more mainstream projects. His 1999...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion.
