Donzaleigh Abernathy (Sara Jackson, the wife of a civil rights activist) is the daughter of Reverend Ralph Abernathy, one of the key figures of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was the keynote organization behind the Civil Rights movement.
Lorraine and Annie (characters Renee and Mary Elizabeth) went on to play mothers-in-law to the two lesbian moms on The Fosters!
On the first episode, there is a flashback that took place in 1962. Renee, played by Lorraine Toussaint, was supposed to be about 10 years old in the flashback. In real life, Lorraine Toussaint was only a 2 year old toddler in 1962, since she was born in 1960.
The Paid Our Dues Productions logo featured in the closing credits shows a bartender removing an empty mug from on top of a coaster that has the production company's logo on it. The drinker drops money onto the bar to pay for the drink: a quarter, one dime, two nickels, and two pennies for a total of forty-seven cents.
Annie Potts and Dan Byrd both also played in Young Sheldon.
