Donzaleigh Abernathy (Sara Jackson, the wife of a civil rights activist) is the daughter of Reverend Ralph Abernathy, one of the key figures of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The SCLC was the keynote organization behind the Civil Rights movement.

On the first episode, there is a flashback that took place in 1962. Renee, played by Lorraine Toussaint, was supposed to be about 10 years old in the flashback. In real life, Lorraine Toussaint was only a 2 year old toddler in 1962, since she was born in 1960.
