Sarah Wheatley is a young woman from a small Oregon town. The last thing she wants to do is go back, but she winds up there anyway with her boyfriend and his two friends, who have been robbing convenience stores across the country.

The adopted son of a sheriff and his wife is kidnapped, but the motive goes beyond ransom. One day Charlie is expecting to be picked up from school, but when nobody shows, he decides to walk home. As he walks, a brown van pulls up beside him and before he knows it, he's in the van and it's speeding off. Who now has him, and why? Will he be rescued--or has he just been rescued?
