On paper, the heist movie “Reindeer Games” should have been a slam-dunk. It had action master John Frankenheimer at the helm, a buzzy cast of rising stars and reliable character actors chewing the scenery, and a clever premise in which a crew dressed as Santa Clauses robs a casino at Christmastime.
Yet “Reindeer Games” landed with a thud 25 years ago — critics mostly hated it, and it flailed at the box office, opening at number three behind the kids’ movie “Snow Day” and the Bruce Willis vehicle “The Whole Nine Yards” before disappearing from theaters entirely just a few weeks later. Was it really that bad, or just a victim of bad timing? And was there a better film to be found in the footage Frankenheimer shot before test screenings led to months of reshoots and editing-room meddling by financiers Harvey and Bob Weinstein?
These questions can largely be answered via...

Plenty of games were announced during The Game Awards 2024, ranging from cozy simulators to Rpgs, but one of the night's most interesting spotlights was the previously revealed Squid Game: Unleashed. A free-to-play title for both subscribers and non-subscribers, Squid Game: Unleashed is a 32-player battle royale featuring plenty of the games seen in the Netflix show that it's based on. The game ups the overall mayhem, but it remains loyal to the core concepts of some of the games included.
In addition to games from the show, Squid Game: Unleashed also features some new challenges that just fit perfectly in a battle royale. It takes a similar approach to fellow battle royale Fall Guys with a fair share of similar obstacle courses, theming them around the school game concept of the show. Not all of these challenges are created equally, however, and some stand out above others by managing to...

It’s safe to say Richard Curtis wasn’t a huge fan of Love Actually postproduction.
The writer-director of the beloved 2003 holiday rom-com recently told IndieWire that it was a “catastrophe” editing the film starring Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy, Martine McCutcheon, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Rowan Atkinson.
“The strange thing about Love Actually is, when we finished the movie, it was a catastrophe,” Curtis said of putting together multiple storylines and character arcs. “It took six months to re-edit it and learn all these lessons about how to do a multi-thread story.”
The film follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during December, leading up to Christmas in London.

Richard Curtis has written many holiday films, from Blackadder's Christmas Carol to the 2023 Peacock film Genie. His most famous holiday film is the 2003 romantic-comedy Love Actually, which he wrote and directed. However, just because the film is famous does not mean it's beloved by all.
Richard Curtis helped with Netflix's new animated holiday film That Christmas. Knowing that he was involved with the project, the animators teased Curtis with a joke about Love Actually without Curtis knowing. The reference proposes that Love Actually is not be remembered so fondly as Richard Curtis might think.

Richard Curtis may be a rom-com staple auteur, but that doesn’t mean the writer/director thinks all his films belong on the nice list. Curtis, who makes his animated film debut with “That Christmas,” told IndieWire that another of his anthology Christmas films actually set the stage for his Netflix children’s feature: “Love Actually.”
While Curtis co-adapted “That Christmas” with Peter Souter from his own bestselling book series, it’s Simon Otto (“How to Train Your Dragon”) who directs (“I’m very much not number one here”); for “Love Actually,” Curtis pulled double duty back in 2003. Both films center on an ensemble cast with holiday-centric stories intersecting between characters. As Curtis told IndieWire, it was the “catastrophe” of editing “Love Actually” that helped bring “That Christmas” to the screen.

Given the low bar for most contemporary Christmas movies – does someone wear a plaid shirt? That’ll do – and the desperate need for material that isn’t totally hackneyed, one can see the appeal of adapting some children’s books by Richard ‘Love Actually’ Curtis. The resulting British animation is a little disjointed and meandering at times, but it’s also genuinely touching and, thank Santa, better than all those formulaic romcoms.
The material is drawn from three storybooks Curtis wrote with illustrator Rebecca Cobb: ‘That Christmas’, ‘The Empty Stocking’ and ‘Snow Day’. We open with Brian Cox’s Santa Claus struggling to deliver presents through inclement weather, before flashing back to a few days earlier when things started to get difficult. There’s unrequited love at a school play, absent parents stuck in the snow, one good twin concerned that her naughty twin sister won’t get any presents,...

Netflix revealed the official That Christmas trailer, which comes from Locksmith Animation (Ron’s Gone Wrong) and director Simon Otto (How to Train Your Dragon trilogy). Debuting on December 4, the film has been rated PG for thematic elements, some language, and rude humor.
That Christmas is an adaptation of the beloved children’s book series written by acclaimed BAFTA Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated writer and director Richard Curtis.
That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys! A film of firsts, it marks Curtis’s first animation project and the directorial debut of animation veteran Otto.
The film stars Brian Cox as Santa, Fiona Shaw (Ms. Trapper), Jodie Whittaker (Mrs. Williams), and Bill Nighy (Bill) as the residents of a charming seaside town where things turn upside down one Christmas.

Leave it to rom-com staple Richard Curtis to transform Logan Roy into Santa Claus.
Curtis is turning to the world of animation with Netflix film “That Christmas,” which stars “Succession” alum Brian Cox as St. Nick. “Love Actually” and “About Time” writer/director Curtis adapted the script from his own bestselling children’s book series; Curtis and Peter Souter share screenplay credit. Veteran character animator and story artist Simon Otto (“How to Train Your Dragon”) makes his directorial debut with the film.

There are two kinds of people in the world: People who love “Love Actually” and people who want to give those other people such a pinch. Richard Curtis’ all-star Christmas classic (you can add quotes to “classic” if you want to) quickly became a perennial yuletide favorite for its treacly melodrama and/or its melodramatic treacle. Like many Christmas movies, it’s sappy to a laughable extreme. But also like many Christmas movies, that’s why people love it. Or hate it.
“Love Actually” is such a ubiquitous holiday staple now that even characters in Richard Curtis movies have to watch it. The new animated Netflix movie “That Christmas,” directed by Simon Otto, is based on three children’s books penned by Curtis — “That Christmas,” “Snow Day” and “The Empty Stocking” — which now take place at the same time, in the same town. I confess I had no idea that Richard Curtis — “Love Actually” and “About Time” filmmaker, “Bridget Jones” and “Notting Hill” screenwriter — had written a trio of quite charming kids’ books about Christmas. It shouldn’t have been a surprise: The man loves the holiday and he definitely loves glossy stories about human connection, and what better outlet for those impulses than some charmingly illustrated storybooks for the younger set? Leave it to Curtis (and Netflix) to cleverly one-up that idea: What better outlet for those impulses than a charmingly animated holiday film for the entire family?
For his first animated outing — directed by Simon Otto and co-written by Curtis and Peter Souter — the rom-com king has turned his trio of books into a single, delightful holiday feature that offers something for everyone, especially the people who get mushy about glossy stories about human connection. While Curtis’ books — “That Christmas,” “Snow Day,...

Richard Curtis returns to his festive roots in an endearingly saccharine animated movie. Here’s our That Christmas review.
The comparisons between Curtis’ latest festive flick and his first are too easy to draw – so I’m going to draw them. With an anthology-ish structure including multiple references to Love Actually, it’s not difficult to see where the inspiration to turn the national treasure’s three Christmas picture-books into a single film came from.
And why not? Curtis’ 2003 directorial outing might have since become the Christmas classic to rule all Christmas classics, but a 15-rating and a healthy smattering of rude bits hardly make it ideal family viewing. Why not launch a spiritual sequel onto Netflix, quickly becoming the home of the modern gooey Christmas movie?

All right, Virginia … Whereas so many Yuletide toons hinge on whether kids believe in Santa Claus, Netflix charmer “That Christmas” makes the case that it’s more important for kids to believe in themselves.
Adapted from a trio of picture books by “Love Actually” scribe Richard Curtis, the feel-good family film is chock-full of kids second-guessing their worth — and not just in the naughty-or-nice department either. A handful of key characters doubt whether they’re deserving of love, on account of absentee parents or pushback from authority figures. Leave it to Curtis (and co-writer Peter Souter) to deliver some affirmational proof that each of them matters — with an assist from old St. Nick, who pops in to deliver some strategically timed presents while most of the grown-ups are Awol.

One of the oldest models for creating a new movie or series with a built-in audience is book adaptations, because there's usually a devoted fanbase that has been eager to see one of their favorite stories brought to life. Netflix has dedicated itself to this structure, with many of its largest projects in recent years coming from existing IP.
There are many different ways to do a book adaptation. Most people expect a strict replication, with as many plot points and details preserved as possible. However, some adaptations find success from changing weak spots of the original books or using different strategies based on the strengths of film versus page. Others, like The Vampire Diaries, keep very little the same beyond character names and genre conventions.
Regardless of how the adaptation is done, however, it can be useful to read the book(s) before watching, to see what changes have been made and evaluate accordingly.

Lee Chang-dong set Cannes ablaze in 2018 with the uneasily beautiful “Burning,” a loose Haruki Murakami adaptation about the folie à troix between an alienated delivery man (Ah-in Yoo), the wily young woman (Jong-seo Jun) he covets, and the handsome charisma machine who blows them apart. The South Korean director’s sixth film made history as Korea’s first to make the International Feature Oscar shortlist (it wasn’t nominated) but is perhaps best remembered for two scenes: the woman, Haemi (Jun), dancing topless for them to the tune of Miles Davis’ “Elevator to the Gallows” soundtrack, and for its abruptly violent ending involving murder and arson in the nude. Then, there’s a missing cat that may have never existed — pure Murakami.
“Burning” remains a new classic of the 2010s, an elusive portrait of loneliness and desire that never spills on its narrative secrets. It grossed an impressive $718,000 at the U.

Children of the Sun is a pulpy fever dream developed by one man and published by Devolver Digital. If you took Suda 51’s Killer7, and combined it with Sniper Elite, SuperHot and Mandy, then you’d end up with something resembling René Rother’s Children of the Sun. It works beyond just being a dynamic piece of visual art too, containing some extremely satisfying gameplay that feels crunchy and tactile.
Children of the Sun is out now for PC.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is a productivity toolkit for gamified productivity sessions. It is an application aimed at individuals who want to enhance their productivity or who experience trouble focusing on work.
It offers various tools to make one’s work session more productive, such as LoFi beats with ambient sounds, work timers, To-Do lists, etc. These tools aren’t pathbreaking; most readers might have heard about them. However, the application’s Usp lies in allowing users to use all of these tools or just one of them. It made my work a lot more fun than it is otherwise.
Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has visuals that make it seem almost identical to the typical LoFi productivity videos broadcast on YouTube. However, it offers a lot more depth. But does it possess more substance and value than just coupling a LoFi playlist with a piece of paper?

There are few instances where these games know exactly who they are (with a few broken bits), and at some point, devs and designers manage to fix it. Unfortunately, that’s simply not the case with Ascendant Infinity, an online co-op title being developed by PlayFusion.
At its foundations, Ascendant Infinity is a competitive co-op title that mixes PvE elements with 3v3v3v3 gunplay. The developers have tried convincing players that the game has everything you’d need for an adrenaline-filled first-person shooter experience that doesn’t take itself seriously. Well, that’s unfortunate, because I hope the makers of this game take it seriously and fix its core problems.
At the time of writing, the Closed Beta version of the game is live between April 5 and 6.

The anxiety of something as adrenaline-inducing as Russian Roulette lies in its unpredictable circumstances. It’s almost ironic how a game of pure luck can grow increasingly thrilling even though nothing is truly in your control. Except, in the case of Buckshot Roulette, luck is merely an illusion. The game’s immaculate design and choice of themes fool you into believing you’re in control, yet gives you ample choice over how things go.
In my time playing through the indie table-top horror game that originally came from itch.io, I found myself at the edge of my seat, breaking my head over every possible ‘right’ decision I could take for my character. This may seem like a paradox because, at the start Buckshot Roulette, a shotgun and a couple of rounds in it decide my fate before I can make sense of why I’m even doing this to myself.

South Park: Snow Day! changes from RPG to arena fighter, but disappoints fans and critics with lackluster combat and comedy. A lack of small-town realism felt throughout the show's long run is one of the game's biggest disappointments. Players and critics alike find Snow Day short, repetitive, lacking exploration, and recommend waiting for a sale to purchase.
South Park: Snow Day! is the most recent entry in the rejuvenated South Park video game series, which began with 2014's The Stick of Truth and was followed by 2017's The Fractured But Whole. Unfortunately, whereas the previous titles were extremely well received upon their release, parodying the fantasy and superhero genres with the series' trademark sense of humor and 2D animation that made them feel like extended episodes of the show, South Park: Snow Day! has not had as much acclaim.

South Park: Snow Day follows on from The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole, although that is not immediately obvious at first glance. This is because a pretty drastic design change has been implemented this time around, taking things from the 2D realm into 3D. It also places a multiplayer co-op mentality first and foremost across all of the game’s core mechanics, which again seems like a strange departure.
Fortunately, despite these arguably unwelcome changes, there is still fun to be had here. The question is; are there enough of these fun moments to smooth over the drastic departures from past games for fans to get on board?
South Park: Snow Day releases on March 26th for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
When it was announced that the next South Park game would employ a 3D visual aesthetic, it had me scratching my head.

Quick Links Snow Way To Say This Easier Taylor Swift and Toiler Paper Who This Is For Lackluster gameplay, floaty characters, and uninteresting powers plague South Park: Snow Day. The humor and writing in Snow Day fall flat, with weak comedy and inconsistent sound design. Snow Day is best suited for die-hard South Park fans looking for basic combat and co-op gameplay.

Much of the long-term success of the South Park series rests on the shoulders of its often crude humor and biting satire. That’s something that spilled over into the last two mainline South Park games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole. While they looked on the surface like South Park-skinned RPGs, both offered innovative gameplay alongside the satiric bite we’ve come to expect from South Park. Not so with South Park: Snow Day!, a repetitive 3D co-op beat ‘em up that brings nothing new to the genre.
It doesn’t help that Snow Day! seems aimed exclusively at franchise fans. Whereas The Stick of Truth re-introduced and built upon many of the fantasy alter-egos of the main cast introduced in episodes of South Park that parodied The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, Snow Day is mostly content to rehash familiar jokes tied to,...

South Park: Snow Day! is a departure from previous games, focusing on replayability and real-time updates from the show. With a shift to 3D graphics, the game offers more flexibility in creating the world of South Park for players to explore. Players can battle as the New Kid in a live-action role-playing game, choosing sides between Cartman's human alliance or Kyle's elves.
South Park: Snow Day! may be the latest game to chronicle the New Kid's journey in the titular town, but franchise co-creator Matt Stone explained that there's a good reason it's not a true sequel to The Fractured But Whole. The long-running animated series South Park stumbled on gold in 2014 with the turn-based RPG The Stick of Truth, which earned glowing reviews and sold well enough that the aforementioned follow-up arrived in 2017 to even more fanfare. Despite the success of these adaptations, the next game in the...

South Park's season 27 premiere may be delayed due to the release of its spinoff game, Snow Day, on March 26. The show's creators may choose to incorporate tie-in episodes related to the game, potentially pushing back the premiere. Fortunately, the production of South Park season 27 is not impacted by recent strikes, but delays may still occur due to the game release.
Although recent seasons have started relatively early in the year, South Park season 27 has a good excuse to postpone its premiere until a little later. South Park has been on the air since 1997, but the show's release schedule has changed a lot since the controversial animated satire series first debuted. In 2021, South Park co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker inked a historic deal with Paramount that promised the network 14 feature-length specials and six more seasons. Paramount+ opened the floodgates to purge content from its streaming platform last week when it removed Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game, Queens of the Universe, and Star Trek: Prodigy.
Deadline reported Monday that all five seasons of Inside Amy Schumer had been banished from the service, with no telling whether the show will return at another destination.
Also removed is Tell Me a Story, which was canceled after two seasons in 2020.
The anthology from Kevin Williamson had previously been leased to The CW to help shore up its schedule during the pandemic.
Blood & Treasure, which began its life as a CBS original before being placed on a multi-year hiatus to return on Paramount+ before being canceled, has also been removed.

Paramount+ has just removed even more series and movies from its service. The relatively young streaming platform originally debuted in 2014 as CBS All Access before rebranding as Paramount+ in 2021. When Oscar-winning animation director Mark Andrews (“Brave”) called his old Pixar pal Alex Mandel about his latest gig, “Super Giant Robot Brothers,” Mandel was 6,700 miles away in New Zealand managing projects for visual effects house Weta Digital.
Mandel, whose other creative side happens to be classically trained composer, dove into Andrews’ new project and created more than three hours of music for the series now airing on Netflix.
“Super Giant Robot Brothers” is a 3D animated action-comedy from Reel FX about massive metal robots destined to save the world from invading kaiju – giant monsters from space – while trying to overcome their own sibling rivalry. Andrews, a drummer who used to jam with guitarist Mandel at Pixar events, suggested the musical style: synthwave.
Synthwave combines heavy metal with ’80s synthpop, adding ’90s production elements for a retro-meets-modern approach that reminded Andrews of the Japanese animated series he watched as a kid.
