Angelina Jolie, the Oscar-winning megastar who is currently back in the awards conversation for her portrayal of opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s Maria (don’t miss THR‘s recent interview with Jolie and Larraín), has been tapped by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival to receive the fest’s highest honor: the Maltin Modern Master Award.

The honor, which is named after the revered film critic and historian Leonard Maltin and comes with a career-retrospective conversation moderated by him, will be presented to Jolie, 49, at Santa Barbara’s Arlington Theatre on Feb. 5, 2025.

Yamashiro and its surrounding 7.3 acre property are asking $100 million. Such films as Kill Bill, Gone in 60 Seconds, and Teahouse of the August Moon used the location, as have TV shows I Spy, Perry Mason, Route 66, and My Three Sons.

The Japanese restaurant is currently owned by producer and nightlife impresario Elie Samaha. 

The property is on National Register of Historic Places. As such, the 20,432-square-foot building will be protected, and the restaurant is likely to continue.

The site of Hollywood’s iconic Yamashiro restaurant and its surrounding 7.3 acre property, dubbed “Hollywood Mountain,” are being put on the market with a $100 million asking price.

The Japanese restaurant, owned by a company run by producers Elie Samaha and Steven Markoff, has appeared in dozens of movies including “Sayonara,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Kill Bill,” “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “Blind Date” and “Teahouse of the August Moon” as well as in numerous TV shows.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.

The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

There are plenty of iconic action movies that have shaped the genre, but many of them are actually remakes. Remakes happen for a variety of reasons: as a language remake to introduce popular movies to the global audience, to create a live-action version of an animated movie, which Disney in particular are keen on, or simply to recreate an old movie for new audiences to enjoy. Remakes can be a sore topic among audiences, especially when a beloved movie is butchered. Many view them as an easy cash-grab for productions, especially as audiences are intrigued by the remake - whether they approve or not.

However, remakes can be a great way to reinvent forgotten movies and plenty of iconic movies nowadays are remakes from the early 1900s. Even Disney’s live-action remakes perform surprisingly well at the box office, especially those of the older movies, because of the new audiences they introduce.

Tubi originals for April include “Dead Hot,” co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Gg Magree. They play witchcraft students who long to connect with the spirit world. But when a ghost hunt goes wrong, they head to Salem, Massachusetts, for a masterclass.

Kicking off the new millennium with a bang, Gone in 60 Seconds re-imagined the crime genre with a modern twist and had a star-studded cast to back up its action. Despite casting stars like Angelina Jolie and Nicolas Cage in lead roles, the movie wasn't particularly well-received by critics, but it was popular with audiences nevertheless. There’s sad news to report today, as it has been confirmed that NFL player turned actor Brad William Henke has passed away at the age of 56. A cause of death has not been revealed, but Deadline reports that Henke’s family said he died in his sleep on November 29th.

Born in Nebraska on April 10, 1966, Henke played football at the University of Arizona before being drafted by the New York Giants in 1989. He got cut during training camp, but was able to move over to the Denver Broncos, where he ended up facing off with the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl Xxiv. Following multiple injuries and six ankle surgeries, Henke retired from professional football in 1994 and got his acting career started the same year. After doing some work in commercials, he earned his first screen acting credit with the 1996 comedy Mr. Wrong. That same year he also appeared...

The Friday the 13th franchise is very important to me, so it always hits me hard when I hear that someone involved with the series has passed away… and last Friday night, the news broke that we have lost another Friday the 13th alumnus. Someone who played the hockey masked icon Jason Voorhees himself: stuntman Ted White. White had already been working in the entertainment industry as an actor and stuntman for thirty-five years by the time he was offered the chance to play Jason in 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (watch it Here). It’s not a job he was thrilled to do, he didn’t even want to be credited on the movie, but he accepted it because the pay was good. As years went by, White eventually realized that he had been involved in something special and started connecting with fans at conventions.

Stuntman and actor Ted White, who played Jason Voorhees in "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter" among other roles, has died at the age of 96. Convention owner Sean Clark confirmed the news on Facebook (via Bloody Disgusting), writing that White "passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home."

White's personal website notes that he was born on January 25, 1926, "in a small town in Texas." At the age of 17, he went into the U.S. Marine Corps, which saw him stationed in the Pacific on Iwo Jima during World War II. He attended the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship and was also a Golden Gloves boxer before moving to California, where he assembled an impressive list of stunt credits, including "Creature from the Black Lagoon," "Giant," "Rio Bravo," "Planet of the Apes," the 1976 "King Kong," "Escape from New York," "Road House," and the 2000 "Gone in 60 Seconds" remake.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” was already the most meta movie released this year, but one scene cut from the theatrical release took the concept much further. In director Tom Gormican’s comedy, star Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself wrestling with a rough patch in his career, while being badgered by the imaginary “Nicky,” an abrasive manifestation of Cage’s younger self who mocks the actor for failing to achieve the greatness of his early days. In the original cut of the movie, Cage finally confronts his inner self in an ambitious black-and-white homage to “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”

Cage has often cited the 1920 German Expressionist film as one of his favorites, and the opportunity to pay homage to its dream-like imagery was such a highlight of the experience that he continued to talk it up for the movie’s release, even though it didn’t make the final cut.

Exclusive: Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers) has signed on to star alongside Daisy Ridley, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Stephen Graham in Disney+’s upcoming film Young Woman and the Sea, from Kon-Tiki director Joachim Rønning, which is currently in production.

The film based on the book by Glenn Stout chronicles the daring journey of Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle (Ridley), who in 1926 became the first woman ever to swim across the English Channel. The daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan, Ederle was a competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics. She attempted to cross The Channel after first swimming 22 miles from Battery Park in New York to Sandy Hook, NJ, setting a record that stood for 81 years.

Jeff Nathanson adapted the screenplay for the drama, which Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are producing.

When Nicolas Cage agreed to play a rambunctious, self-absorbed version of himself in the Lionsgate comedy “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” the actor had plenty of opinions about his character should behave. However, none surprised director Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten more than when Cage suggested he make out with a younger version of himself.

“I wouldn’t even have thought to suggest it,” Gormican said in an interview, “but it’s exactly the sort of Nicolas Cage choice that led us to write this movie.”

Among the many meta elements that “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” offers as it explores Cage’s attempt to retake control of his life, the movie concocts a younger version of the actor — whom he dubs “Nicky” — that goads the older Cage into reclaiming his wilder days. And in a key moment as Cage bickers with this living inner monologue, the pair actually lock lips.

In “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” Nicolas Cage stars as himself. Or at least, a version of himself.

The film finds Cage at a rough spot in his acting career, where he can’t seem to book any big roles. Los Angeles’ ubiquitous smog, freeways, beaches and palm trees — as well as its place in moviedom — were all influential elements as filmmaker Pierre Perifel and production designer Luc Desmarchelier huddled over where to set DreamWorks’ latest animation, “The Bad Guys,” in theaters April 22.

Based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey about a group of animals — a wolf, a snake, a shark, a tarantula and a piranha — that are always portrayed as criminal types but are trying hard to reform here, Desmarchelier says the script didn’t define where the action would be taking place. So when conceiving ideas, he looked at Chicago and New York as potential settings for the gang’s last heist.

But the production designer says he and Perifel ultimately landed on a reimagined version of the City of Angels because inspirations from cop and heist movies and TV shows had a gravitational pull.
