Dark Star Pictures has acquired Us rights to the darkly comedic Iceland-set thriller Spell, the first film production from Crush Pictures and an international sales title on the Visit Films slate.

Music video director Brendan Walter, who has worked with the likes of Green Day, Panic! At the Disco, and Weezer, made his feature directorial debut on the film, which shot in Iceland and follows an American illustrator running out of medication and grieving the death of his fiancée who wanders the Icelandic countryside unsure whether he is experiencing magic.

Amazon is continuing to expand its Ya slate with a series order for the drama “The Wilds.”

The series follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds after an airplane crash strands them on a deserted island. The series hails from writer and executive producer Sarah Streicher, whose past credits include working as a staff writer on the Marvel-Netflix series “Daredevil.” She is repped by Verve, Circle of Confusion, and attorney Erik Hyman.

“The Wilds” is a co-production between Amazon Studios and ABC Signature Studios, with Streicher being under an overall deal at ABC Studios. Amy B. Harris will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Panic, a games company with 20 years experience, is bringing its own pocket-sized console to market...

Here's an unexpected slice of gaming news: there is a new handheld games console coming to market, and it has a black-and-white screen and a working hand crank. It's called Playdate and it comes to us from Panic, a studio that's been developing games for over 20 years (mostly for Mac and iOS) and recently started publishing (with titles like Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game).

The Playdate console was announced with a new website, featuring the following description: "It’s yellow. It fits in your pocket. It’s got a beautiful black and white screen. It’s not super cheap, but not super expensive. It includes brand new games from some amazing creators. Plus it has a crank."

Here’s some very unexpected casting news: Rocker Marilyn Manson has joined The New Pope, HBO’s follow-up to 2017 miniseries The Young Pope, our sister site Variety reports. Also appearing in the new installment is film star Sharon Stone.

Although no character details are available, the network did release photos of both Manson and Stone on set.

As previously reported, the cast also features returning star Jude Law (aka the titular young Pope Pius Xiii) and new addition John Malkovich. (Get a first look at the duo here.)

Amazon Studios has greenlit “Panic,” marking the studio’s first foray into young adult dramas. Based on the The New York Times best-selling novel by Lauren Oliver, “Panic” takes place in a small American town where every year, the graduating seniors engage in a competition they believe is their one chance to escape. But this year, the rules have changed–and they must decide how much they are willing to risk in order to get out.

This is Oliver’s first television credit. She will serve as creator, executive producer, and will also write each episode. Besides “Panic,” she’s known for other Ya novels including “Before I Fall,” which was adapted into a 2017 feature film starring Zoey Deutch, and “Delirium.”

Amazon Studios announced Thursday that it has greenlit its first young adult drama, “Panic,” based on the 2014 novel by Lauren Oliver. The series will premiere globally on Amazon Prime Video.

One of the upcoming horror movies I'm most interested in checking out as soon as possible is 20th Century Fox's three-film adaptation of Goosebumps author R.L. Stine's teen horror series Fear Street. Yeah, you read that right - three-film adaptation. This is like The Lord of the Rings meets a PG-13 horror-thriller such as Blumhouse's Truth or Dare. The movies are all set to begin filming this month in Atlanta with Honeymoon helmer Leigh Janiak directing the first and third films, while Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry will helm the second motion picture. I loved the books of R.L. Stine growing up. I spent most of the first half of my middle school years reading his kid-horror series Goosebumps and then I spent most of the second half reading his scarier teen-horror series Fear Street. In fact, I still own several Fear Street books. Needless to say then that I'm excited about Fox and writer-director Leigh Janiak's upcoming three-film adaptation of Stine's Fear Sreet. The band performed a faithful rendition of the tune, with frontman Brendon Urie’s acoustic strumming creating a foundation for guitarist Kenneth Harris to recreate – with a few clever tweaks – the song’s tumbling riff and solos. While Panic! At the Disco didn’t inject the “Say It Ain’t So” chorus with its quintessential distorted crunch, Urie’s massive vocals gave the performance a potent extra kick.

The Jennifer Salke-run studio announced Thursday it has greenlit three pilots in the young adult genre: “Panic,” from writer Lauren Oliver based on her The New York Times best-selling book, “The Wilds” from Sarah Streicher (“Daredevil”), and drama “College” from creator Marja-Lewis Ryan (“6 Balloons”).

The trio of orders boasts a roster of big-name executive producers, including Channing Tatum, “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway, Jamie Tarses and Lauren Oliver.

Are you ready to return to Shadyside, Ohio? A film trilogy based on R.L. Stine's Fear Street books is in the works.

Goosebumps made you want to keep the nightlight on into the wee hours of the night. However, R.L. Stine’s other book series, Fear Street, was pure evil. Teenagers devoured it. The Prom Queen, The Cheater, The Best Friend. Fear Street could be any Main Street U.S.A, and that's what helped the book series become a best-selling sensation. With the popularity of the 2015 Goosebumps movie, it was only a matter of time before the Hollywood Machine, the big bad thing that goes bump in the night, scooped it up Stine's other popular series for a big screen adaptation.

I named Ernest & Celestine as the Best Animated Film of 2013 in my 2013 RopeofSilicon Awards and yet it hasn't even hit theaters here in the States yet outside of an Oscar-qualifying run late last year. Yesterday,Lionsgate dropped another,new,movie clip (below) for their upcoming action/drama flick "Hunger Games," and it features main character Katniss,appearing to be quite emotional and panicked as she has just volunteered to take part in the deadly Hunger Games challenge to replace her little sister Primrose. It looks pretty intense as she hugs character Gale Hawthorne goodbye. The movie stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Amandla Stenberg, Stanley Tucci,and Donald Sutherland. In the film, Katniss replaces her little sister in the deadly Hunger Games,which is a nationally televised,twisted,event that requires participants to fight each other until only one person is left alive. It hits theaters this Friday,March 23rd.

The sick and twisted minds behind the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have launched a brand new horror and sci-fi themed fest: Bloodfest Fantastique! Australia gets a lot more blood-soaked on June 10-18, nine nights of some of the most gruesome, terrifying and far-out films, past and present, from around the world.

While Muff has never been shy about screening genre films, Richard Wolstencroft — founder and director of both fests — is planning for his newest endeavor to simply be a celebration of his two favorite genres of filmmaking, without all the politicking hooha-ery that surrounds Muff.

So, there’s still a very underground-esque flavor to Bloodfest. The newer flicks in the festival have a scrappy, inventive, degenerate quality, from slice and dice em’s like Chris Sun’s Come and Get Me, Chad Ferrin’s Someone’s Knocking at the Door and Geoff Klein Bikini Girls on Ice; to monster flicks...

Michael York dashes onto the cinematic scene as the blundering but very enthusiastic D'Artagnan in Richard Lester's hugely enjoyable period comic romp. The late great Roy Kinnear is the long-suffering vassal of aristocratic swordsmen Oliver Reed, Richard Chamberlain and Frank Finlay, whilst Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway shine as heroine and villainess, respectively. Producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind filmed the following year's sequel back-to-back with this more successful first part, which approach they would revisit shortly for Superman and Superman II. Dumas with wit, energy and integrity.

With 2009 at an end the time has come to look back over things with my personal picks for my favorite films of the year, the biggest disappointments, and a list of promising young directors to watch out for going forward. Please bear in mind that my bottom list is not necessarily what I consider to be bad films (though most of them certainly are) but the films that I was most disappointed by. And among this year's selection are some highly anticipated blood-baths from horror masters, Oscar winners and martial arts masters. The 34th Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff 09), which runs September 10 to 19, 2009, has announced its complete Midnight Madness lineup, and once again we're left to wonder why the hell we don't live in Canada. This year's Midnight Madness offerings include crazed animation, chick fights, zombies, vampires, a possessed cheerleader, exhilarating martial arts, and more!

Colin Geddes, Tiff programmer, calls it "a showcase of some of the most highly anticipated thrillers and chillers of the year and adds, "Bloody proms and zombies seem to pop up as main themes, but I've made sure to inject some truly bizarre action into the mix with animated plastic toys from Belgium and Russ Meyer inspired fighting femme fatales."

‘Jennifer’s Body,’ the Diablo Cody-written, Megan Fox-starring, horror flick will make its premiere at the upcoming Toronto Internationl Film Festival. The film, along with other, major premiers like ‘[Rec] 2,’ ‘Daybreakers,’ and ‘Survival of the Dead,’ will play as part of the Midnight Madness series.‘Survival of the Dead,’ whose title also comes as part of this announcement, is the sixth in George A. Romero’s zombie series.
